History of the American Firefighter

"You go, we go" is a famous phrase often used by firefighters that shows their brotherhood and loyalty to one another. Being a firefighter to the public eye is about being there during a disaster or at anytime anyone is in need since they have the ability to save a life. Although firefighters save people's lives' daily that is not the only thing they do throughout the day. Being a firefighter is physically and mentally demanding. But, to get where the fire department has gotten today has taken a lot of sacrifices from firefighters themselves and to the public. We are able to trace firefighting all the way back to the Roman days, all the way back to understanding the start of basic firefighting, and how African American males were able to join the fire department. Also with the struggles of women who wanted to become firefighters, what they had to go through and how it changed the dimension of the job. Then we see all the tools that have been and are still being used, and how

Hamlet, Getrude and Ophelia

In the play "Hamlet," Gertrude and Ophelia offer similitudes and they are additionally differentiating characters. Gertrude, the mother of Hamlet, is a cherishing, fair, defensive mom. Ophelia, Hamlet's woman, is youthful, absurd, and belittled. One of the primary positions, to which they both difference, is their affection for Hamlet. Gertrude and Ophelia both show affection towards Hamlet, they adore him in distinctive ways though. Gertrude, his mom, adores Hamlet in a protective manner, setting his honor under her current spouse Claudius, he happens to be Hamlet's uncle, & the sibling of Gertrude's dead spouse and Hamlet's dead dad. Hamlet thinks about his mom as a slut on the grounds that she wedded Claudius after her spouse's passing. Gertrude is not a slut. she thought she was making the best choice by cherishing her child and living her life. Ophelia, his mystery love, adores the young prince Hamlet, yet is induced against her fascination by her dad, Polonius, and her sibling

Maps in the Study of Geography

Maps are very important sources of geographical knowledge. Today without map use, it is impossible to acquire and understand the knowledge of events such as; the earth sciences; the place of our state in relation to others and, the socio-economic processes taking place or having taken place at a particular location. The aim of this assignment is to describe the various types of maps and also state their significance in the study of Geography, showing why it is important that we learn and study them in Geography. There are several types of maps and though it is not an easy task to list them all, there are major ones that stand out in the study of Geography. To begin, Demiralp (2007; 93) defines maps as imply being "language and communication tools in transferring knowledge of an area in the science of geography which studies space." They are tools that transfer or represent knowledge about a given land or area or space, helping us to better understand that area. For example a

The Graduate and Genesis 1-3

Genesis 1-3 provides an interesting read from beginning to end. It shows us scenes of what occurs at the beginning of mankind's dealings on this earth in chronological order. "In the beginning" is so powerful that it moves the reader to become embellished in God's plan for the world. The entire story of Adam and Eve can be seen as a metaphor, scattered with symbolism. Two people make a choice, without any regard of the warning given to them by God. Thus, everything they know is taken away from them. This coming of age experience helped Adam and Eve to gain something that would help them through tough times: knowledge. In the case of The Graduate, two people who are in love. However, they too have taken the initiative to make a choice for a better life. The decision to disobey the will of those above them, in pursuit of love may lead to rough times. The director Mike Nichols reveals symbolism and silent imagery in his film to shed some light on the plot, as well as the characters. Has

Reality in A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings

"A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" is a story that combines the reality of everyday life with fantasy. The magic realism used in the literature illustrates many meanings in society. The old man with wings and the girl who turned into a spider are two examples of unreal events used to tell a story that is too strange to believe. Within this story, the author exposes the lack of compassion that people tend to have for people who are different. In the beginning of the story, author Gabriel Marquez describes a gloomy environment in which he states, "The world had been sad since Tuesday" (Marquez 356). The rain has caused an infestation of crabs inside the house. The son of Elisenda and Pelayo was also extremely sick. One day after throwing away more crabs, Pelayo stumbled upon the old man lying face down in the mud. Instead of helping the man in need, Pelayo ran to get his wife Elisenda. Speechless and in shock they stared at the old man before helping him. The couple's conclusion was that the man is a "lonely castaway from some foreign ship" (357).

Progression of Future Energy

Nuclear power has been a significant source of energy in many parts of the world since the 1950's but it seems that many people still have this ideology that nuclear power will never be safe and worth its weight on the environment. In fact, Nuclear power is one of the only human "created" innovation that has the potential to power the human race and Earth for millennium to come, possibly to even power our expansion off of Earth. In terms of fission and fusion, fission is what most power plants use as the reactant. Fusion is the hardest to manipulate because nuclear fusion is difficult and hard to contain. Scientists must overcome these problems before nuclear fusion can be used as a routine energy source. Nuclear Plants hold many different advantages. In

Suicide in Literature

The movie "Splendor in the Grass," and the essays "The Crack-Up" and "The Doomed in Their Sinking," are about being in a confused state of mind. Deane Loomis in the movie hopes to marry Bud Stamper, her one and only love. F. Scott Fitzgerald in "The Crack-Up" describes his hopes of playing football in college and going overseas during the war. William Gass mentions his mother and how she "committed suicide" without an explanation, in his essay "The Doomed in Their Sinking". At the ending of Splendor in the Grass, Deanie comes back from the mental institution after trying to commit suicide at the waterfall because Bud cheated on her. Deanie visits Bud, who is married to Angelina and has a child with her. Deanie asks Bud if he is happy, and he replies that he doesn't ask himsel

The Theory of Knowledge

Knowledge has the power to not only deepen our understanding of the world but also to solve problems. As people inquire more, think more, develop more, ask more, problems began to rise. These problems may be long term, short term, or hold significance for only a second. In order to solve these problems, one must breakdown the components of these problems, like the givens and the goals. The given is the facts or information laid out and the goal is the end state of the problem. In the natural sciences and mathematics, one uses logic and reasoning to answer key questions of human existence and existing theories. Because art is seen as subjective, many disregard its quality and necessity. Within all areas of knowledge, there is a guided methodology behind each process and ideology toward solving a problem. Within the natural sciences, scientists are able and expected to solve problems. Scientists can reason through different premises by applying their previous knowledge of science and fa

Banning Violent Video Games

Minors playing violent video games that are not age-appropriate could result in a generation that impacts society negatively. Not only do violent video games affect children's behavior, the underage people playing the games do not learn important skills, leading them to be violent in real life. Children mimic and learn behavior from graphic media, especially interactive video games, and may not recognize appropriate problem-solving skills or consequences. Violent video games are linked to real-life violence and problems. These graphic games and media have many negative impacts on children, and may haunt them for the rest of their lives. Banning the sale to and use of violent video games by minors would solve many problems regarding children being aggressive, real life violence, and proper problem solving skills in minors. Children and youth mimic behavior that they observe from media, as well as people. If minors continue to play violent video games, their behavior may become more re

Amir's Perspective - The Kite Runner

26 years later, from the winter of 1975. 26 years earlier since I should have done this. But of course, I was too late. So there I was, sitting with Rahim Khan inside his little torn up house. J asked him whether Hassan was still at the house or not, Baba's house. He showed me a Polaroid picture of Hassan and his first and only son Sohrab. With that was a couple of letters that were addressed to me. The Kabul that Hassan and I knew and loved was gone. At least that's what Hassan was trying to tell me throughout these letters. He complained about the Taliban abusing their power and attacking his wife Farzana for speaking a little too loudly to a potentially deaf vendor at a market. Hassan had named his son after a character from our favourite story, from when we were children. He took Sohrab to our old pomegranate tree where he read to his son. He was waiting for me to come home and he was still faithful to me. I had felt a spark of hope that I would be able to see Hassan again, finally

The Most Effective Parenting Style

Everyone is raised into a different family by different parents in different ways. Parenting has often been separated into styles of permissive, authoritative, and authoritarian. Although parents should avoid being lackadaisical with their kids, parents who are overly strict and leave no decisions to their children are more harmful to minors than beneficial. These parenting styles cause emotional problems, as well as cause the child to rebel at some point in their life. Authoritarian parenting is defined as "strict, demanding but unresponsive, don't give children choices or options, and [parents] utilize punishments with little or no explanation" (1). This type of parenting causes various mental issues with children. In an essay by Dr. Laura Markham, she states that "kids raised with punitive discipline have tendencies toward anger and depression. That's because authoritarian child raising makes it clear to kids that a part of them is not acceptable..." In many cases, t

The Philippines a Century Hence

Through Rizal's "The Philippines a Century Hence," a desire to understand and deconstruct the legacy of occupation is utilized to try to formulate what a future might look like in the Philippines. In this legacy, it can be said that a varied set of responses to occupation, perpetuated both by the Spanish and the colonized people themselves, contributed to the stagnation of any progress towards independence. The driving force would be a clash of political, ideological, and even racial identities amongst many newly formed group in the Philippines, who maintained different attitudes towards colonialism from each other and from pure natives. Spanish blood became diluted throughout many generations in the Philippines, making its way into native blood, blurring the line between conquered and conqueror. Eventually, even some Filipinos themselves helped maintain the rule of the Spanish through roles in the military and local government. This ambiguity of identity and response to th

Asian Music in American Culture

Theme For this concert, I want to focus on Asian music in American culture. Many people consider Asian music as something that is not included in American music or something that will never be put into any mainstream America music genre. This stereotype may result from the fact that Asian Americans were not a major ethic group present in the United States during the early years of this country; as a result, elements from Asian culture are isolated. Currently, it is really hard to find successful Asian artists presented in main genres such as jazz, rock, hip-hop, etc. Asian artists are often overlooked when it comes to representing 'American music'. The reason I want to present this concert is because that, since America is nation built by immigrants and premised upon the tenet that it can be a home for anyone who wants to live in a free, democratic country, plus the fact that the Asian population in the U.S. is growing rapidly, when considering American music, we should not c

Search, Seizure and the Fourth Amendment

Introduction According to The Fourth Amendment that a person has the right "to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, (Del Carmen, R., 2014)." The issue is does this apply to an object in plain view or an open field search and if the fourth amendment offers protection. In regards to United States v. Oliver, and California v. Greenwood that deals with the matter if an individual has a reasonable expectancy of privacy in regards to an object in plain view or an open field as stated in the fourth amendment. The Purpose of a Search and Seizure Evidence search serves the objective of identifying the existence and place of evidence; searches consist of checking the location with the purpose of discovering criminal evidence. The purpose of an evidence seizure is to collect evidence to use in the criminal prosecution of a defendant, which is a method of taking in to custody the crimes evidence. The nature of a search c

Christmas in the Sandbox

On Christmas day of 2009 during a return convoy from Bagram, Afghanistan the communications rang out "Oh s---! I just hit a guy, we need a medic! We need a medic!" That statement was the start of a very emotional day for many everyone involved in the event. The vivid picture of the surroundings that is fired into an individual's brain after an event like that has just taken place will remain with everyone involved on that beautiful day in December. It all started out as a routine that took place prior to any convoy that rolled outside the gate on a mission; breakfast, convoy brief, checking gear, and arming our weapons. "Alright everyone lets round up and roll out." stated SFC Collier after all the checks were accomplished. As we exited the gate heading back to Camp Eggers I had a weird feeling in the pit of my stomach and couldn't pinpoint why. As the convoy was progressing on the planned route, we had already passed thru a few villages with no issues s

My Journey as an Immigrant

What is immigration? Who is considered an immigrant? Where do immigrants come from? Why do they decide to come to the United States of America? Immigration is a hot topic today it is all over the news most of the time. There are congressmen trying to decide on an immigration reform and they have been talking about such a reform for years now. My name is Nancy Cortes, I was considered an illegal immigrant at one point in time. I was born in the state of Zacatecas in the country of Mexico. There, I grew up in a place where freedom was the thing that we all had in common. Money was scares, we did not have many new clothes or plenty to eat, but love was always around us and family was the most important thing that we had. Even though there were harsh moments in my childhood I was happy to live in Mexico. Immigration is the act of coming into a new country as a permanent resident (Schaefer, 2012, p. 18). The Department of Homeland Security estimates that, "there are 11.4 million un

Suicide by Emile Durkheim

In his 1897 work, "Suicide," Durkheim conducted an empirical analysis of sociological methods on a concrete social problem. He asserted that suicide was a social phenomenon, jointly determined by the amount of two social factors; social integration and moral regulation. This paper will address how Durkheim's epistemological thoughts influenced his analysis of the social element of suicide and will attempt to point out inconsistencies in his typology of suicide. Emile Durkheim Emile Durkheim (1858- 1917) was a French scholar and one of the first social theorists to describe his works and ideas as "sociology" (Giddens, 1978). He was also a social psychologist and a philosopher. Unlike the other influential social theorists of the time (Karl Marx and Max Weber) Emile Durkheim's theories were essentially methodological collectivistic, in that he was largely interested in the workings and organs of society that generated social solidarity. After reading his works one can make

Diversity in the Workplace

Generally, people will relate or define diversity as all characteristics that will differ one from another. This is very important concept especially now in the 21st century when people from different geographical and cultural origins interact. However, independently of what circumstances diversity is referred as, many fail to understand that diversity encompasses everyone at any level not just the minority. Consequently, many successful multinational organizations aim to encourage and develop diversity in the workplace for the benefit of both the company and employees. Kaiser Permanente - Kaiser Permanente (Kaiser Permanente, 2015) is a community inclusive company that provides affordable healthcare plans. They have been in this industry for over 60 years and always kept their will to provide the excellent service. The True Story of Christopher Columbus

The Truth Behind The Columbus Story In order for the human race to progress from a savage nation into a civilization Christopher Columbus' actions were not necessary, but he was not a rapacious man either. For Columbus to achieve his goals he needed the Arawak natives help. How he got their help may seem brutal or savage like, but he used the methods that were known to him. Therefore, Morison is right for burying the story of genocide inside a more important story of human progress. When telling a story it is better to omit certain facts in order for a more important story to thrive. Throughout Columbus story there is a sense of hero worshipping, which contributes to the idea of American Mythology. The idea of American Mythology creates a feeling of nationalism and of patriotic pride. Moreover hiding genocide and all other atrocities should be viewed as a positive and not a negative. Conclusively throughout the "1492" Poem Christopher Columbus' savagery is omitted to

Media and Negative Body Image

Media is a boundless form of communication that is delivering content that is shaping our society, values, and our children's brains, emotions, and lives. Everywhere we look, we are being exposed to sexualized images and behavior, shown to us on the covers of magazines, reality shows, commercials, Facebook ads, video games, song lyrics, books, and movies. In America, statistics show the average teenager spends per week about 31 hours watching television (Hinckley, 2012), 17 hours listening to music, 3 hours watching movies, 4 hours a week reading magazines, and 10 hours online; which is 10 hours and 45 minutes of media consumption per day (MissRepresentation.) While media isn't essentially good or bad and does have a few positive effects; however, majority of media involves sex for advertising and a balance of exposure is needed for our children, teenagers, and even adults. When being constantly exposed to sex in the media with very little moderation and censorship, there are detriment

Document-Based Question - The Renaissance

Although the Renaissance was a relatively short time period, it generated change in many ways. The Renaissance began around the year 1400, at the end of the Middle Ages, which lasted from the fall of Rome in 500 to about 1350, and ended around 1700. The Middle Ages gave rise to various agricultural developments and an increase in education, causing people to question what the church taught them. This brought on the humanist movement. The Renaissance completely changed how man viewed himself, which is apparent in the artwork, literature and scientific advances of the time. A major difference between Renaissance art and artwork from the Middle Ages was that man paid little to no attention to man as an individual, whereas Renaissance artists showed a greater appreciation for beauty and man in general. During the Middle Ages, artists focused solely on God, sin and everything related, and did not worry about making their paintings realistic. This trend did not

The Benefits of Organ Donation

Audience The audience for my essay is people on the fence about becoming an organ donor. Preferably older than 18 years old because that is the age at which one has the right to become an organ donor. People that fit into this category would also have to have healthy bodies. People reading this essay would be of either gender or race. Organ donation is permitted in almost all major religions so a person of any faith would be able to read this essay. People against organ donation would be a main reader of this essay. Studies show that more than 100,000 people are on the waiting list for a major organ and roughly 4,000 are added to this list every day. Also more than 6,500 people a year or about 18 people a day die before an organ ever becomes available to them. Due to not getting the organs people need; a person dies every 15 hours. More people should become an organ donor because it is possible to donate while still being healthy, a donor's body is never disfigured, and it can save ma
