Principles in the Declaration Of Independence

On June 11th 1776, a five men committee consisting of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman was appointed to write a draft of the Declaration by the Continental Congress. Thomas Jefferson was given the honor of writing, due to the fact that he was the most eloquent writer, the first draft and after the approval of the five men committee it was submitted to the Continental Congress. On July 4th 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved and signed by fifty-six men, to whom they agreed to "mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor"; these men represented the thirteen North American colonies that were proclaiming their separation from Great Britain, founding the United States of America. In order to understand why these founding fathers would go to such lengths to separate themselves from Britain, after all they were committing treason by creating this Declaration, we have to go back in tim

The Nutritional Values of Pasteurized Milk

Millions and millions of people drink cow's milk every day. Milk has become an apparent necessity in an abundance of peoples' lives. Many people use milk for breakfast such as on cereal, putting in their coffee or simply as a glass of milk with toast. At most grocery stores, the choices are fat free, one percent, two percent, and whole milk. It is believed that milk as a source of calcium leads to strong bones, but this belief has its detractors and has become controversial. Advertisements such as "Got Milk" have brainwashed us into thinking that we "need" it. But most of the time this cow's milk is contaminated with growth hormones and pesticides. In addition, pasteurization destroys almost all the nutritional value in cow's milk. The disadvantages to drinking cow's milk far outweigh the advantages. Drinking milk causes increasing health problems, and may even lead to an over-intake of calcium which can be just as problematic as not enough. In the late 19th century, a growing number

Concepts of Treasure in Beowulf

In the epic poem, "Beowulf," the word 'treasure', serves as an epitome of cultural values. The characters in Beowulf, and its original audience, want glory, the perpetuation of fame, and to remain alive in human memory across time and space. Glory in Beowulf is usually connected with heroism in battle and with generosity. Treasure is the outward manifestation of glory. While treasure is usually used to refer to material possessions and valuable items, it can also represent a significant ideal that each person holds. In Beowulf, it appears that Heorot, the mead-hall, is the most prestigious treasure of the Danish people. Under the Danish king, Hrothgar, the hall is a place of community and gatherings, where traditions are preserved, loyalty is rewarded, and, perhaps most importantly, where stories are told and reputations are spread. The Danish come to the hall frequently to gather around, indulge in mead and reminisce about the great time they have together. Throughout the tale of Be

Financial Analysis of Best Buy

Best Buy is the largest dealer of consumer electronics in North America. It is expanding its reach with future stores in Canada and Mexico as well as continued growth in US based Best Buy stores. It has come a long way from its first home in Minnesota where its original name was Sound of Music, which opened in 1966. Richard M. Schulze was one of the founders of Sound of Music with two other partners. Some reasons for Schulze's success were his understanding of the market place and how consumers during the time wanted to buy. He arranged his store with the display and boxes of the displayed item underneath the display. This made it easier for the customer to pick up the item they wanted to buy and purchase it in a swift manner. What was common during that time was commissioned sales representatives selling items to customers. Sound of Music would buy in bulk and have noncommissioned sales representatives. In 1983 Schulze changed the name of Sound of Music, and started Best Buy,

Violence and Video Games

Violent video games are being played by children all over the world. Do these games contribute to violent behavior in youth? The answer is yes. These games can definitely have an effect on children today. Modern video games target children and teens, revealing suggestive themes that promote aggression and negative behavioral changes in users. Other forms of media violence may be connected to violent behavior in children too. There are children whose futures may be in danger, just because their parents didn't monitor the violent media they were watching. I did not realize how serious media violence was until I did some research and it saddens me that children have such easy access to this inappropriate nonsense. Violent video games can have an effect on children but it does not mean that they are going to be killers. Research states that a child's personality may be a bigger factor of a negative behavioral change than the video game. Violent video games are definitely not a good optio

Descartes, Hume and the Existence of God

Descartes Existence of God Rene Descartes lived from 1596-1650; he was a rationalist who wrote a book named, Meditations on First Philosophy. Descartes challenges the idea of certainty. Descartes presents the idea of an Evil Genius. The Evil Genius is a being that implants what we think, our perceptions, our ideas, and our thoughts in our mind that distract us from what is really the truth. The Evil Genius is incapable of love or goodness, which makes the Evil Genius imperfect. Since the Evil Genius is in control of what we think, Descartes is left questioning what is certain. Descartes explains that nothing is certain because the Evil Genius could just implant anything we think that is true or any idea that we have into us; this makes absolute truth impossible. By setting this idea up, Descartes broke everything down that is certain. Then, Descartes built everything back up by there being a certainty of God. He was able to establish that there was a certainty of God by laying a fou

Joe, however, finds his way out of jail by framing Steve and claiming innocence on the whole incident. This

The Reader Response Theory

Reader Response Criticism a wide-ranging, interesting, and evolving literature study that focuses on understanding the reading processes of readers and how they relate to specific elements in the text they read, their life experiences, and the scholarly community they are apart of. This study centers on readers' responses to literary texts, and how crucial they are the creator of meaning (Tyson 169; Harker 29). The reading process is very important, so in order for a reader to get the most out of it, he must approach it the right way. The reader-response theory implores readers' to recognize reading as a meaningful, social, and truly personal act (Sheridan 805). Reader-response criticism consists of different theories and concepts formulated by several literary critics. These theories, along with the literary theorists behind them, are imperative to understand and recognize for their role as the foundation of this modern literary study. Symptoms and Treatment of Pink Eye

Pinkeye (also called conjunctivitis) is redness and swelling of the conjunctiva, the mucous membrane that lines the eyelid and eye surface. The lining of the eye is usually clear. If irritation or infection occurs, the lining becomes red and swollen" (Web MD). According to Gary Heiting, basicallanyone can get pink eye, but it is most common in young school children, the teachers of those children, daycare workers, and college students. There are three types of conjunctivitis: viral, bacterial, allergic. Viral conjunctivitis is caused by a virus, like a common cold. This type of conjunctivitis is extremely contagious. Although contagious, it can usually clear up on its own in several days without medical treatment. Bacterial conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria and can be the source of severe damage to the eye if left untreated. Lastly, allergic conjunctivitis is caused by eye aggravations such as pollen, dust, and animal hair among those predisposed individuals. This kind of pin

Globalization and Drug Trafficking

Introduction Opium grown in the fields of Afghanistan often ends up as heroin, sold in cities and towns around the world. The following statement indicates the underlying fact of an underground market; drug trafficking. Drug trafficking is a global black market system dedicated to the cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, and sale of drugs. Trafficking occurs in terms of transnational trade, which involves the movement of illegal commodities across borders. The UN estimates that the international drug trade alone is about eight percent of all international trade, about $400 billion annually and around 200 million people use drugs. Globalization is arguably one of the most influential phenomena of our times, yet critics opine that globalization has resulted in a competitive global market, and unethical practices in business. States have been interconnected globally through a free market system, however it also provoked the emergence of criminal organizations. Globalization exploits

The Hip-Hop Culture

A prominent culture I belong to is hip-hop, which is not simply a genre of music but a world-known culture. Hip-hop was created as a way of life, to be an outlet for expression, to uplift self-esteem, and give voice amongst a generation in this country. Hip-hop culture was developed in New York City in the 1970's mainly by African Americans, first emerging from The Bronx; the lifestyle of Hip-hop culture has now spread to urban and suburban communities worldwide. In hip-hop there is a unique style of how one speaks dresses, carries themselves, and many more that go along with the expression in the culture. The four historic elements of Hip-Hop are emceeing, DJ'ing, graffiti, and break dancing. The elements, unique style, and expression all are responsible for hip-hop's evolution and its strong cultural influence to the world. I think hip-hop has broken down ethnic barriers and has built bridges between them. It has enormously become a fine unification for diverse populations of ra

Black and White in Shakespeare's Othello

In Shakespeare's "Othello," a central theme focuses on the contrast between the colors black and white, literally and metaphorically. Both colors (shades) associates itself with a character and their specific personality traits. Black is generally considered more sinister and dirty whereas white represents innocence and purity. Shakespeare isn't afraid to hold back and exploit the complexity of the terms black and white within Othello. Racial overtones are explicitly made throughout the novel. The complex and confusing values of black and white are used to reinforce the clash between horrible tribal-like behavior and angelic lawfulness. The proverbial black sheep, the black and burning pit of hell, and black devils serve to designate black as morally foul. There is this assumption that the dark color goes hand in hand with grime and filth and the darkening of one's compassion. Shakespeare further stresses the evil and corruptive nature that is associated with black by writing that "Even now, now, very now an old black ram / Is tupping your white ewe" (Othello 1.1.89-90). Growing Up in a Single Parent Home

Children growing up in a single parent family have always been viewed as "different." Being raised by only one pare nt seems impossible to many yet over the decades it has become more prevalent. In today's society many children have grown up to become emotionally stable and successful whether they had one or two parents to show them the rocky path that life bestows upon all human beings. The problem lies in the difference of children raised by single parent is versus children raised by both a mother and a father. Does a child need both parents? Does a young boy need a father figure present? Does the government provide help for single parents? What role do step-parents and step-siblings play? With much speculation, this topic has become a very intriguing argument. What people must understand is that properly raising a child does not rely on the structure of a family but should be more focused on the process or values that are taught to these children as they learn to mature. The Trials of Harriet Jacobs

The lives of slaves in the Antebellum south were full of suffering. Slave owners had managed to control nearly every aspects of their slave's existence. When reading Harriet Jacobs' "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," we are told of the tactics performed by many slave owners in order to maintain their power over their slaves - their "property." The use of the word property is commonly found in texts of the day relating to slaves, and is also found quite often in Harriets own writings. This word, when describing a human being, coupled with Harriets writings give us a lens in which to view how oppressive and deceptive white slave owners where in their attempts to manipulate every facet of slaves lives. As mentioned before, Harriet eventually was able to reach freedom in the south. However, this was not the case for most slaves in the pre war south. One way in which slave owners where able to maintain dominance over slaves was through the use of literacy as a weapon. By de

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2002)

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act was named after senator Paul Sarbanes from Maryland and senator Michael Oxley from Ohio who were the co-sponsors of the act. This act, also known as the "Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act," was enacted because of some of the major corporate and accounting scandals. The government wanted to find a way to reduce these types of scandals from happening because it cost the investors billions of dollars. Through enacting this law the government is hoping that less scandals will appear because of the tight guidelines and strict punishment, which is presented in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The Act was widely accepted by congress and passed Senate with a 99 to 1 vote and House of Representatives with 423 in favor. Something had to be done because to many people were losing money and companies were producing fraudulent numbers, which were misleading. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has eleven sections which state differen

Cary Grant - Handsome and Hilarious

Considered to be one of the most comedic actors of his time, Cary Grant made his film debut in 1931, in a short film called "Singapore Sue," after being signed by Paramount Studios. His first feature film was released in 1932; the romantic comedy,"This Is the Night," in which he played the agile husband of Thelma Todd (Sherrod). For the next few years, Grant was restrained to roles - both leading and supporting - that relied more on his charisma and attractiveness than on his actual performance abilities. In 1937, Grant broke his contract with Paramount Studios to become an independent or "free" agent, which turned out to be a brilliant career move. Cary Grants popularity skyrocketed as he accepted roles that took advantage of his uncanny ability to play the suave, stylish men who endure comedic assaults on their pride. He created one of his most notable hits in "The Awful Truth" in 1937, which debuted his precision at being able to play both the romantic lead as well as

Concert Report - Xavier University

On Thursday, January 21, 2010, I attended a concert that was held at Xavier University's Music Building in their recital hall. The concert featured tenor vocalist Chauncey Packer, soprano Dara Rahming, and pianist Dr. Wilfred Delphin who accompanied him throughout the performance. The first two songs Mr. Packer sung, were "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz" and "La vie en rose." These were songs that were sung in German and in Italian. Their tempos were moderately paced. His next song "Granada" was more of an andante tempo. You can hear where phrases began and end and dynamics were sung from piano to forte. His range was from the middle to the lower registers and the song had mostly consonance in it with a hint of dissonance. After "Granada" were three pieces cal

Mestopotamian Mythology and the Epic of Gilgamesh

The search for immortality is mankind's attempt to take control over the inevitability of death. This is a theme commonly found in Mesopotamian mythology, and a good example of this is the "Epic of Gilgamesh," in which, the protagonist, Gilgamesh, a demigod, is on a quest to attain immortality after the death of his friend Enkidu. Gilgamesh and Enkidu slay Humbuba and take over the Pine Forest. Furthermore, Gilgamesh and Enkidu are made to wrestle the Bull of Heaven due to Gilgamesh's actions of spurning Ishtar when she confesses her love for him. The two friends fight and overcome the Bull, which causes commotion causing the Gods to decide that one of the two friends must be punished for their wrongdoing. Enkidu suffers immensely from illness and eventually dies. After Enkidu's demise, Gilgamesh's fear of death drives him to search for the power of immortality. Enkidu was formed from clay and saliva from Aruru, the goddess of creation, to tame Giglamesh and rid him of his arrogance

Jealousy or Motivation to Succeed

It was a cool, brisk afternoon on the Oregon coast. The beach was surprisingly vacant; only two men present on the sand. On man, perhaps thirty five years old, comes here to dig for clams day after day after day. The other, much older man, also comes to the ocean for clamming - but his visits are less frequent. On this particular day, as the sun began to set, the two men - strangers to each other - packed their supplies. As they began their trek off the beach, the young man, with a long look on his face, peered into the other man's clam basket. It seemed that his own efforts had produced little, while the older man carried a heavy basket, full of fresh clams. The young man, hoping to be given a portion of his competitors haul, said, "How many clams did you find? Many?" It was evident that the younger man had caught less than usual. The older gentleman stopped walking, looked down at his basket, raised his gaze toward the face of the other man and flatly said, "Looking in my basket isn't going to do you any good." This story is an example of one man being envious of what anothe

Constutional Amendments

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States The first amendment was written by Thomas Jefferson, and effected on Dec 15, 1791, it is also known as Freedom of Speech, Press, Religion and Petition. The Man of Mode by Sir George Etherege

As in many restoration comedy plays, class and elitism play a key role in the plot and development of the play, especially when it comes to the treatment of women. In Sir George Etherege's play, "The Man of Mode," the main characters portray a social system in which power is everything. All of the protagonists in the play are characterized as being idle rich, meaning that they come from old money and are able to maintain their fortune without working. Etherege uses humor, wit, and satire to criticize the foolishness of women in his play. The play takes place in a restoration society where women are seen as mere assets in an elitist society, thus preventing them from rising in it. In order to properly depict this theory, Etherege examines the mannerism and behavior of many women in the play, especially Mrs. Loveit, whom ruthlessly pursues the admiration of Dorimant, Bellinda, whom Dorimant easily manipulates, and Harriet, a women who is able to win the admiration of many through her w

Methods of Resistance During Political Oppression

There are arguments for both violent and non-violent forms of resistance. In a recent study on civil resistance, Chenoweth and Stephan (2008) concluded that non-violent resistance campaigns have had a success of 53% compared with a 26% favorable result for violent campaigns (ibid). However I would argue that the specifics of these terms are far too broad. Instead there should be a scale of resistance, as what in many political ideologies could be deemed as violence may not be to others. Of course there are basic rudimentary definitions of political and institutional violence that shall be discussed in this essay, but it is how people associate themselves to that violence that is of most importance. The majority of people in developed countries will look toward state violence and deem it as either in the name of national security or they will speak out against it in the name of brutality or an excessive use of force. A state will only use excessive force when it knows it has lost all ot

Church in the Medieval and Renaissance Periods

The role of religion and church was very influential during The Middle Ages and the Renaissance. They possessed a great deal of power that couldn't be taken away by any ruler. In fact, the church was a counter to kings who wanted absolute power. Any king who wished to rule must have the church on his side. Opposing the church would lead to excommunication. Today this doesn't sound like much, but at the time, excommunication translated to the downfall of one's kingdom. The Middle Ages were a time in which everything was controlled by oaths. So for a king to oppose to the church meant that he was breaking the oath of allegiance he had with God. This resulted on the pope excommunicating the king. Now, everyone from the king's subjects to his enemies could be freed from those oa

Exhibition - Rhode Island School of Design

When you step off the elevator into the first room of the exhibit "Making it in America" (located at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum), you are greeted by large, distinguished portraits standing tall and proud. There is an elegant mahogany and pine side chair cushioned with blue floral fabric, a dark brown dresser, a silver teapot and cup, shiny shoe buckles and various other objects from the 18th century. At first glance, the room seems to be a bit scarce of artwork. However, you have yet to venture into the second room. The lighting is slightly dim, but it sets the tone of the 18th and 19th century, and it is certainly bright enough to see the paintings and objects clearly. Some of spotlights that are shining on the paintings give off a glare but if you find the right spot to stand in it disappears. The portraits are framed in grand golden frames, carved with lovely designs. They are mounted on patterned walls that are colors such as deep maroon, mint g
