History of the Brazilian Acai BerryThe mysterious berry that was stumbled upon by Brazilians natives now thrives as one of the most sought out super fruits in the all the world. The Acai berry is said to have an earthy flavor profile and tastes like unsweetened chocolate and raspberries mixed into one. They resemble blueberries but were hard as a rock. And when you scratch it underneath the dark purple skin is the yellow pulp. The rest is the fibrous brown stone called the pit. It grows in a weed like form across thousands of acres along the Amazon River delta. It was recorded that the acai berry has been a staple in the native's diets since before recorded history. The ribeirnhos harvest and prepare the acai palm the same way for centuries. They brought down the fruit soak it in water to soften the berry and then rub the skin the flesh down to the core. They would then eat the resulting liquid on fish or game and just by itself. "Acai was virtually unknown outside Brazil until ten years ago, when Ryan and Jeremy Black, |

The Equine Encephalitis VirusEastern, Western, and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis Virus is an illness that is contractible between all equine animals (horses, donkeys, and zebras) and humans. Horses can spread this virus to humans. Humans, however, cannot spread this virus to animals; therefore, it is a direct zoonosis. Depending on whether the virus is Eastern, Western, or Venezuelan, it can be abbreviated as EEEV, WEEV, or VEEV. Another name for this virus is encephalomyelitis (VEE). This virus is classified as Togaviridae Alphavirus, and is a viral agent. Emus, ostriches, and swine can also contract this virus. The infection usually appears as hepatitis and or a gastro intestinal tract infection. This virus can also be contracted by hamsters, apes, monkeys, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Bats and birds serve as the reservoir host for EEEV |

Assistive TechonologyEvery day, students with physical, sensory or cognitive disabilities face learning barriers. The phrase "assistive technology"" as described in IDEA, states that IEP teams must consider if the students with the disabilities need assistive technology and services in order to benefit. I believe that Assistive technology is not a luxury, that it is a right. An assistive technology device is any item that is used to assist or improve the functioning of an individual with a disability. The goal of assistive technology is to help the disabled gain a form of independence in their lives. There are two forms of assistive technology high tech, and low tech devices, which improve educational and everyday life for disabled individuals. Low tech based tools utilize little or no technology to assist with a disability. High tech based tools utilize a large amount of technology to assist with a disability. Three specific forms of assistive technology devices are head pointers, personal FM units, and Dynamic display devices. Head Pointers provide an alternative use for individuals who are unable to use their fingers, hands or arms. They are designed for use by peo |

The Effects of Violent PornographyMargaret Atwood, in her essay "Pornography," published in 1988, describes the issue of violent pornography in the United States and its growing popularity. Atwood's purpose is to inform readers and help them develop opinions about the gruesome topic. She begins by describing the violent side of pornography, "the death, messy, explicit, and highly sadistic" kind (30). She neutrally discusses the "pro-porners" and "those in favor of censorship," describing each sides beliefs (31)." Atwood transitions into describing the speculated reasons for pornography. This multibillion dollar industry is thriving off of males seeking entertainment, backlashing the women's movement, and trying to have power over female sexuality. Atwood argues that pornography ruins relationships, decreases sex education, glorifies rape, and causes severe addiction problems. Although Atwood presents many factual statements about the addictiveness of porn, she is bias towards males and I believe is incorrect in stating that porn is making sex education a thing of the past. Atwood uses an effective technique in comparing porn to al |

The Importance of Xenia in The OdysseyOdysseus's adventure in Homer's epic, "The Odyssey," follows him on a journey where he meets an array of new people while traveling to new land. As he meets these new characters, he experiences the different forms of lack of hospitality. Homer uses Xenia, the Greek practice of hospitality to strangers, to characterize mortals, gods, and monsters as "good" or "bad" according to Greek values. These values include hospitality and generosity. Telemachus is an example of a character who demonstrates good Xenia, while Cyclops (Polyphemus) fails. Respect is a value inherent in the act of Xenia and one Greek character who displays respect is Telemachus. Telemachus shows respect through his hospitality towards Athena when he, "took her right hand" and brought her into his home (I. 28). By doing this he illustrated the second step of Xenia which is to bring the stranger into ones |

Why Victims of Domestic Violence StayIt seems most people have an instant negative reaction when they see people stay or return to an abusive relationship; even if they don't say it out loud. Isn't the answer to the problem simple? Can't the victim just pack up and leave the abuser. This was the same opinion I held regarding domestic violence until enrolling in this class and learning the presented material. The facts and statistics provided during class totally changed my perspective on this complex social issue. Victims of intimate partner violence are challenged with many social and criminal justice obstacles when trying to end an abusive relationship. One article I examined to support my claim focuses on four decision determinants including: financial independence, witness of parental abuse, the mental health of the victim and the amount of time it took police officers to arrive on the scene of the crime. According to the article, the first three factors mentioned are common with prior conducted research. In this |

Ancient China and ConfucianismAccording to historical references, Confucius was born in the state of Lu to the noble Kong clan. His father, a commander of a district in Lu, died three years shortly after Confucius was born, leaving the family constrained by poverty. Nevertheless, Confucius received a fine education. He became married at the young age of 19, unfortunately his life of poverty had followed him into his married life (Riegel, Jeffrey, pg 1). Later he was compelled to become a servant for the chief of the district in which he lived. His mother died in 527 BC, and after a period of mourning he began his career as a teacher, usually traveling about and instructing the small body of disciples that had gathered around him. Becoming known as a man of learning and character with his passion for Chinese ideals and customs that soon spread through the principality of Lu. Although Confucius himself believed he was only a transmitter of old knowledge, in my opinion Confucius was an innovator of a new style of livi |

The Influence of Genes and EnvironmentThe nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The debate revolves around the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and environmental factors to human development. Some philosophers or writers suggest that certain things are in-born or simply occur naturally regardless of environmental influences. Other well-known philosophers and psychologist believe in what is known as tabula rasa; which means that the mind begins as a blank slate. In other words, everything that we are and all of our knowledge is determined by our experiences. Social skills is a very important skill to have, and personally, I think it becomes more important every day. This is something heavily effected by one's environment. The most extreme case is represented by feral children. A feral child is a human child who has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age, and the child has no or little experience of human care and loving or social behavior. Feral children lack |

Positive Behavior Intervention SupportFor years, society has turned to punishment as a method to change a person's negative behaviors. Our prisons and juvenile detention facilities are practically overflowing due to our determination to continue with the ideology of punishment = improved behavior. However, research is conclusive that punishment does not change negative behaviors for most people. In fact, the individuals for whom punishment works are those who were unlikely to commit the offense in the first place; and they may have benefitted by an array of consequences, not necessarily negative ones. There is, as is typical of any ideology, some criticism of the effects and consequences of Positive Behavior Intervention Support. For instance, there is concern about providing material reinforcements to students for behaving in a manner that should just be expected. Furthermore, there are questions asked about the idea of rewarding someone for appropriate behavior, because that may not |

Bach's Unconventional Use of Baroque Concerto GrossoBach's Unconventional Use of Baroque Concerto Grosso Form in His 'Brandenberg Concerto no.5' Compared to Corelli's model in 'Concerto Grosso in F major op.6, no.2' J.S Bach is considered as a late Baroque composer because he adapted forms, styles and characteristics of the Baroque era in his compositions. He was considered old-fashioned at the time because he was known for using old styles in his works. However, he does not only use the conventional form but also combines the 'new' style and this makes his music more complex and experimental than previous Baroque composers. His Brandenburg concertos are one of the most representing examples of his extended use of instrumentation and form that lays outside the convention. Bach's Brandenburg concertos are concerti grossi, but some of them do not seem to follow the model of the Baroque concerto grosso. It seems that Bach's instrumentation in these concerti grossi is not similar to what is usually found in Corell |

Tacitus - Agricola and GermaniaTacitus demonstrated and presented couple examples of ethnographies in his work on Agricola and Germania. With his work on both pieces, Tacitus lures his audience through his observation of different ethnic groups and there diverse customs from one another. Tacitus work on Germania focused on the various Germanic groups; while Agricola concentrated its attention on Tacitus father in-law Julius Agricola who through him saw ethnography on the various people of the ancient Britain. In both of his work Tacitus depicted the cultures, practices, and institutions of various ethnic groups. Tacitus uses all of these given points and subject topics, to demonstrate and prove a moral/ political point. The use of ethnography by Tacitus was not only a way of comparing and contrasting the different ethnic groups but to expose the unethical political practices; by attempting to use a moral approach. This paper will discuss and analyze the difference between Romans and Germanic ethnic groups. It wo |

The Music of the Mande, Ewe, and Yoruba TribesMusical cultures in the Sub Saharan African region consists of so much more than just music. Music encompasses life itself to members of these tribes. Dealing with entertainment, religion, birth, manhood, etc, music serves as a central piece to learning how each tribe can be so similar but so different. The tribes of the Mande, Ewe, and Yoruba share many similarities that involve the traditional, historical aspects of African music, but they have each specialized to become unique in there own ways. Starting off lets discuss the instruments played in each of the tribes. The Ewe and the Yoruba tribes are primarily drum-based cultures, relying on that style of music to perform the unique tasks of each tribe. The Mande on the other hand, focuses more on stringed instruments to express emotions. The most important of the string instruments in the Mande tribe include the Kora, which is like the harp, the Kontingo, a plucked lute, and the Balo, which is i |

Main Policies of the Federal ReserveWithout any doubt, the Federal Reserve is considered the most important entity in terms of undertaking the task of a comprehensive regulation of the monetary and financial workings of the economy. Since the time it was first created, its role as well as regulations have expanded. Today, there are four main roles that often fall within the workings of the Federal Reserve (The Federal Reserve Board, chapter 1). The first of these relates to ensuring that the monetary policies are set by taking into account the level of credit that is available and how changes to the monetary system might have an impact on employment figures and regulation of price. The second task relates to a comprehensive supervision of the country's banks and also regulating them to ensure that banks don't default. In case a bank does seem to find itself in financial problems, the Federal Reserve would step in to provide financial support in one way or the other. The third key role is to ensure that the overall fin |

The Growth of Short's Brewing CompanyBusiness Description In 2002, Joe Short stumbled on an opportunity to open one of Michigan's leading craft brewing companies. At the young age of 22 and with very few years experience in the industry, Short registered Short's Brewing Company's as a new business in the state of Michigan. It wasn't until January 2003 that he found the perfect location for his brewery - a 120 year old hardware store in downtown Bellaire, Michigan. After 18 long months and many setbacks, Joe and his friends finally completed the renovation of the building and on April 26, 2004 Joe opened the doors to his very own brewery. Over the next couple years important staff was added to the Short's team to help them keep growing. Joe's wife Leah took on the deli and food menu and Scott Newman-Bale (aka "The Magician") joined as the Chief Financial Officer. With Scott's help, Joe was able to create the Imperial Beer Series. This series included 13 beers, made with "untraditional and unusual ingredie |

Venezuela and Political OilVenezuela is one of the top five oil exporters in the world. Almost 100 billion dollars of oil was exported from Venezuela in 2010. Venezuela is the country in the western hemisphere with the largest reserves of light and crude oil. Prior to the Spanish conquest of Venezuela, Venezuelan natives used oil that seeped through the ground for medicine, fire source and caulking for canoes. Using techniques taught to them by the natives, the Spanish conquistadors were making use of the oil. At first, they found that their ships could benefit from the caulking techniques used by natives. Then the Spaniards discovered they could use the oil to help maintain their weapons. The first documented shipment of oil from Venezuela was in the year 1539, when the colonial government sent a single barrel of oil to Spain in an attempt to cure kind Charles V of his illness. We also begin to see the increase of the Venezuelan oil industry in the years between 1908 and 1940. Even though Venezuela has had oil |

Academics and Preparing for CollegeEvery year, thousands of students enrolling in community colleges and universities find out they lack the needed reading, writing or math skills to take even basic courses. "That means taking remedial courses, for which the students pay regular tuition but don't earn credits. The classes delay students' progress toward degrees and cause financial aid to run out faster, or force the students to borrow more" (MacMillan). Public Act 12-40 (Also known as Bill SB-40 (Morse)) was a law put into effect in the year 2012 to stop remedial classes in Connecticut Community Colleges; and I feel it is an absolute positive concept for students today. "Public Act 12-40 has three major components; to redefine the delivery of remedial education by placing students in one of three tiers of course work at the community college and state university level. These levels are described as college-level, college-level with embedded support, and Intensive College Readiness Program (or, alternat |

The Scopes Trial and Teaching EvolutionIn the 1920's, the theory of evolution was not taught in schools as preliminary measure to avoid children being exposed to more risky behavior than they already had at this time. The 1920's were a time of sex, drinking and partying; however the small town school of Dayton Tennessee had been worried about the loss of Christianity in the students present in that small classroom, and educators have to be sure to keep in mind that all evidence they present to their students have a strong basis in fact and should steer clear from any statements that suggest a religious affiliation. As a result, if the Scope Trial had managed to make it to trial in present day, they would not have much of a case seeing as the evidence includes a lack of separation between education and religion and fringes a disregard to the Fifth Amendment. During the 1920's much of the laws regarding the separation of state and church were not as fined tuned as they are today due to the lack of cases regarding |

Ohm's Law - The Rules of CircuitryOhm's Law it's a very basic rule for circuits but indeed it's very essential to calculate voltage, resistance, and current in a circuit. When circuit gets more and more complex later we also notice that when we calculate voltage, resistance and current we are still using Ohm's Law. This is the main reason I wanted to mention what I learned about the Ohm's Law in the class. Ohm's Law has begins from one equation that is effect = cause opposition, every conversion of energy from one form to another can be related to this equation (p. 101). In electric circuits, the effect we are trying to establish is the flow of charge, or current (p.102). Current is a reaction for applied voltage but not a motion but it's not a factor to get system in motion. Voltage is amount of potential energy between two points on a circuit; one point has more charge than another. One good example is that water = charge, pressure = voltage, and flow = current. Resistance determine how much charge will flow in a c |

Toy Cars vs. the Real DealA few weeks ago, we went outside to do a Hot Wheels and Real Car project. It was a very fun project. It was the first time we went outside to do math work and I liked how it was very interactive. We got to work in groups to make the work quicker and everyone had a great time doing this. I hope we can do another project like this before the year is over because I am much better at projects like this than just sitting in class doing book work or studying. I like doing hands on projects rather than in class work. With all that being said here is what we did in this little experiment/project. The purpose of the project was to see if the matchbox or hot wheels cars were similar to the actual vehicle or if the hot wheels or matchbox cars were off and was not the actual fraction of the size that the original car/truck was. To start the experiment, we started by going outside to measure all of the vehicles. Each student was put into a group of three or four. Each group was given three ve |

Emotional Well-Being in LiteratureIsolation, loneliness and alienation; these are three important themes in the short stories, "The Story of an Hour", "Eveline" and "A Rose for Emily. Each story draws you in and provides examples of these three things in very different ways. In discussing these three stories I shall provide examples of how each of the main characters from the aforementioned short stories share the same characteristics of loneliness and isolation; each trapped in their own particular set of circumstances. While each of their stories varies greatly in content, their struggles remain akin and very comparable. In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, the author portrays how someone can be trapped in an unproductive and unsatisfying reality because of other's thoughtlessness, exploitation, and domination. When combined with the modern society's belief, presumably the later half of the 19th century, a further understanding of Chopin's thoughts and feelings can be realized |

The Enlightenment and the Great AwakeningESSAY 1: When coming to the new world, the colonists brought religion from their homeland. But like many other institutions, religion was changed upon arrival to the new world. It took on different forms and different sects were formed. For example the Puritans of New England broke up into Congregationalists and Presbyterians. With this break came loss of piety. While people physically moved further and further away from their churches, so too did they spiritually move further and further away. The fathers of the Churches realized this problem as a significant one. They realized that if this trend continued, the center religion would be non-existent. They tried all different sorts of things to bring people back to religion and piety. They formed halfway covenants. The members of the churches were not fully Christian in the eyes of the Church rather descendants of former members of that sect. But after time this failed and the distinction between "official" Christian memb |

Francisco Costa and Calvin KleinA more perfect union could not have been than that of Francisco Costa and the fashion mega house, named after it's eponymous creator, Calvin Klein. After Calvin Klein left his namesake label in 2002, Francisco Costa took over as Creative Director, bringing with him a new, hyper edgy take on the already racy, scandalous/minimalist aesthetic that Calvin built over his 30+ year reign at his label. After Francisco's effortless delivery of the first two collections, which picked up very positive reviews as a duo of homages to Calvin Klein himself, passion ensued, motivating Francisco to new lengths and covering ground he never thought he would want to pursue. The House of Calvin Klein is known in the present day for not only what Calvin Klein created in the 80's and 90 's (with the racy advertising and anti-maximalist aesthetic) but also for what Francisco Costa has broug |

Ethics in Hiring Undocumented ImmigrantsImmigration is one of the most controversial issues that arise every time we approach an election. Despite being quite broad in nature, many potential candidates attempt to address the aspects that are relevant to their campaign; usually centering around how it is either hurting or helping the economy as a whole and how we must strengthen our borders. There is little focus, however, on topics such as the exploitation of illegal immigrant workers or how the undocumented work force might actually be helping our economy grow. To this end, I decided to explore some of the larger ethical issues at play in the judgment of whether hiring unauthorized workers is moral or immoral. Using three different ethical schools of thought, distributive justice, deontology and utilitarianism, I will analyze several points. First, I will talk about the effect of NAFTA on the increase in the undocumented population here in the United States as well as country's obligations, if any, towards this undergroun |
