Teacher's Instructions for WWII Research Paper

Teacher's Instruction Your final writing assignment of the semester will be a 10-page research paper, due on Saturday, December 7, at 5:00 PM. This paper can either be a historiographical paper (centering on an issue in the secondary literature) or an analysis of a primary source (say, a memoir); in either case, you are free to choose a topic of interest to you (although you need to clear the topic with me). You will also need to complete a series of shorter assignments connected with your larger research project. Whichever approach to the paper you choose, your goal should be to use the sources you find to present your reader with a clear, specific argument and to defend that argument with as much evidence as you can muster. Timetable Each of you should email me a paragraph-long proposal by Friday, October 18, at 3:00, discussing what you want to research and why. This proposal should also include a list of 3-5 sources you have consulted on your topic (listed in bibliographic formatting); I recommend that you speak to me about your topic before the proposal is due, or at least check in with me by email, before handing in the proposal. On Friday, November 8, b

The Positives and Negatives of Online Education

Every year, the internet provides us with more social, economic and educational options than the year prior. It's a gateway, enabling us to connect with people from all over the world. Millions of people, businesses and organizations take full advantage the endless possibilities that come with being part of the "global community"; and many colleges and universities are no exception. Institutions of higher learning are offering more and more opportunities for students to conveniently earn the degree of their choice. Online Statistically, the majority of students are enthusiastic about the many opportunities they're being given by taking online courses. courses are appealing for a variety reasons, including the ability to learn from the comfort of their own homes. Students attending an online school have difficulty receiving optimal advice from professors. In online courses, students and professors often communicate with each other through e-mail, which cannot actively perform and connect be

Democracy in Turkey's Political Parties

Table of Contents I. Introduction and Definition II. Factors Affecting the Intraparty Democracy a. Political Culture b. Electoral system c. System of Government d. Legislation e. Economic Structure f. Social Structure III. Importance of Intraparty Democracy I. Introduction and Definition According to William Wright, if we can say one party has an element of democracy, then upper class people in the party cannot block the ideas and decisions of the lower class people in the party. If the leaders of the political parties do not listen to the ideas, needs and decisions of the lower-class, we can mention there is a democracy inside the party. Parties which don't assimilate democracy inside of them, cannot encourage the democracy to the whole country. Therefore intraparty democracy is not a party's internal problem. Because democracy inside the party concerns people as well as governing primary source. The Turkish constitution regulates intraparty democracy in its 69th article and 1st paragraph. 'The

North, South and the Civil War

Soon after the election of Abraham Lincoln, the secession of the southern states, and the fall of Fort Sumter, the Union and the Confederate states were preparing to fight what would become the bloodiest war in American history. The northern and southern adversaries each possessed strengths - and weaknesses - economically, militarily, politically, socially and diplomatically. But the northern states had an impressive economic advantage, which gave them more capital to invest in the production of weapons and other supplies that would guarantee them a stronger military. The north also had stronger, more established manufacturing facilities, which were capable of producing large quantities of artillery and ammunition. Another northern state advantage was the massive number of immigrants who were ready, willing and able to accept jobs and receive training in factories; hubs of cranking out artillery, ammunition and everything required for travel, battles and a potentially long-term war. The southern states had many strengths as well; mainly consistent cotton production and the slaves r

Arrow's Impossibility Theorem

In his essay, "The Arrow Impossibility Theorem," Eric Maskin discusses an assertion put forth by his former teacher, Kenneth Arrow. Arrow's theorem centers on his statement that, "...there is no good election method." Well, I will make the case that this is too strong a conclusion to draw; it's overly negative" (1). Two popular voting methods used in the United States are then described by Maskin, the plurality rule and majority rule. Maskin describes plurality rule as a voting method in, "which the winner is the candidate who is more voters' favorite candidate (i.e., the candidate more voters rank first) than any other. Thus, if there are three candidates X, Y and Z, and 40% of the electorate like X best (i.e., 40% rank him first), 35% like Y best, and 25% like Z best, then X wins because 40% is bigger than 35% and 25% - even though it is short of an over-all majority (2). He then gives his explanation of majority rule, which is, "the candidate who is

Types of Family Violence - Destroying Lives

Family violence can be defined as one family member making violent, emotionally harmful or assaultive behaviors towards a "spouse, child or any other family member" (Besharov, 1990). Cases of family violence have been on the rise, as more husbands abuse their wives, mothers harm their children, one sibling assaults another, etc. A person who is physically. emotionally or sexually abused by a family member may suffer the consequences for the rest if their lives. Sexual abuse of children is usually evident when the heads in families, who are usually the male, use their position to victimize girls who are subordinate to them. The males victimize females and the older take advantage of the younger. Abuse of boys by males is not common and it is also very rare to find female family members abusing boys or girls. Men can also abuse their children sexually if they lose their jobs, fail financially or suffer certain setbacks leading them to release all their anger of failure on their childre

How Religious Cleavages Influence Presidential Elections

Abstract The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of religious attendance and other cultural variables had on the vote in the 2004 presidential election. I start by first introducing the study and some of the generally held public beliefs. Following this, I review and critique scholarly articles written about the major influences in the 2004 presidential election. I then go on to formulate my own hypotheses and analyze them with a data from the American National Election Studies in 2004. I find that many cultural issues played important roles in George W. Bush's victory. Ultimately, I discuss the implications of my findings on the 2004 presidential election as well as future elections. Introduction Following the Bush victory in 2004, many media outlets reported massive turnouts from religious blocks to have played a decisive role in the outcome. With this being a constant theme within the mainstream media, I have decided to explore just to what extent religious clea

English Language - The Process of Word Formation

In the English language, the word formation process creates new words and puts them in different grammatical categories, as well as creates new meanings to some words. Word formation has different stages/processes, working in conjunction with each other in order to form words. The purpose of this investigation is to study word formation examples, and to investigate how word formation influences English language in terms of its grammatical categories and words meanings which have been created through the formation of word formation, as well as explaining the process that took place. There are different processes of word formation in the English language: derivation, compounding, borrowing, coinage, affixation, blending, acronyms, clipping, back-formation, free and bound morphemes, and inflection). All these processes can show people the variations and changes in the word formation of languages. The processes will be explained throughout the essay. 1- Derivation: is the process of creat

Breaking Stereotypes -Sherman Alexie

In his book, "The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me," Sherman Alexie explains how he taught himself to read by perusing through a Superman comic book at the age of 3. He looked at the illustrations and imagined what words would accompany them. His early fascination with reading led him to read nearly anything he could get his hands on. He got his fascination of reading from his father who was, by all accounts, an avid reader. In Alexie's childhood home, piles of books waiting to to be read were common-place in his family home. His family read murder mysteries, gangster epics, basketball biographies and anything else they could get their hands on. According to "The Joy of Reading...," most Indians in that time were expected to be short, quiet and uncommunicative in-front of their non-Indian teachers, and did not want to speak up or seem smart in the classroom, especially at the young age Alexie was. Therefore they were comfortable around other Indians but came off as completely un-intelligent around non-Indians.

Aspects of Conformity in Stockett's The Help

Marriage was a priority in the 1960's. Young women were encouraged to be married and to start having families soon after graduating from high school. If a young lady did decide to attend college, they weren't expected to earn a degree; college was simply a middle-point between high school and marriage. Even women who earned a college degree were limited to the type of careers they could pursue, encouraged to enter female acceptable careers; nursing, teaching, and home education (Napikoski, web). In the novel, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett, Skeeter Phelan is a young lady who attends Ole Miss and obtains a degree. She returns home to her mother and friends who pressure her to get married and settle down. They are puzzled by the fact that she seems to desire something different for her life. Skeeter desires to become a journalist, a career path that was not always accessible to women. She finds employment as a domestic housekeeping columnist; she realizes that she is not an expert on th

Shooting an Elephant by George Orwell

"Shooting an Elephant," by George Orwell, is an essay about a British police officer in Burma who is called upon to shoot an elephant that has escaped from its owners cage. Running free, the large elephant is quite dangerous and is causing havoc in town. Throughout the story, Orwell allows the main character - as well as the reader - to contemplate things before the elephant is captured. With the elephant continuously running away from kept running away from the soldier. The soldiers morals were preventing him from shooting the animal, but the humongous crowd behind him made him feel as if he had to kill it. The soldier knows that it is only an animal, and that it had no intentions of hurting anyone. His first solution to the problem was to simply escort the animal b

Self-Determination, Incentives and the Crowding Out Effect

Abstract In economics and psychology, the crowding out effect is considered both as based on strong empirical evidence and as an artifact. We present the different ways economists and psychologists discuss the existence of this effect and propose an integrative solution based on the self-determination theory. Keywords: intrinsic motivation; incentives; crowding out effect; self-determination theory; complementarities JEL Classification Code: J30; L20 1. Introduction Traditionally, in economics the theories of incentives and particularly agency theory make the implicit assumption that the more an individual is paid the higher his effort, even if there is some decreasing returns of payments. It is then possible for a principal to define his/her policy in terms of the relation that he/she possibly establishes between the wage or bonus given to the agents and their efforts. It is also assumed that punishment (e.g. a fine) permits to avoid some behaviors by agents (e.g. low effort). Ev

My Happiest Failure

I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of my alarm. My mouth parched and my back sweaty. I slid my legs off the side of the bed where they landed on the floor with a soft thud. The hard wood floor felt like ice on my feet as I slowly felt my way to the bathroom for a drink. The full moon cast a soft glow through the window, providing just enough light for me to make my way down the stairs. In the kitchen, I grabbed one of the muffins and some of the bacon that my mom had set out for tomorrow morning's breakfast, sat down at the table, and lazily stuffed my face with the food. A slight smile appeared on my face as I remembered how she would pack lunch for me every morning before sending me off to the school bus with a big hug and a kiss. She always wrote a special note on the inside of the bag for me to read when I opened my lunch. Things like "I love you, Jack. Have a great day!" and "Good luck with our classes! Love, Mom." Her love and encouragement could always brighten even the worst of days. I had always looked forward to lunchtime for that reason. I'm gonna miss her, I though as I put on my ol

Walmart and Employee Wages

"Always save money," "Compare prices" and "Save money, live better" are frequent phrases used by Walmart in hopes of drawing in customers. They promise that they will have the lowest prices around, which they do. They promise to match a price if a customer finds it cheaper at a different store on the same good, which they also do. However, they've promised that people will live better, which I, and people like me have not. Walmart will indeed help people save money, whatever their income, but does it really help people like me live better? Sam Walton may not have intended for Walmart to become as dominant as it has become over the last sixty-five years, but that hasn't stopped Walmart from controlling much of the world's economy today and using their power to their advantage. Sam Walton was born on March 29, 1918, and grew up in rural Missouri. As well as learning hard work from working on a farm, he also learned about that hard work pays off from growi

This is My Life

I love being Tonya Marie Willis. I am the daughter of Alicia Faye Willis and James Earl Jacobs. I've lived in Michigan most of my life. I'm a mother of two daughters and a grandmother of one with a wonderful finance. As I begin to research my family history I first wanted to know the history on the Willis History and where the last name came from. The name Willis is a surname, often referred to as a last name or family name, is a name passed down through a family from generation to generation. Though each culture has its own norms, in the West the surname Is typically inherited from the paternal (father's) line. In ancient times, people were often referred to by their given name and place alone. Hereditary surnames developed to distinguish individuals with the same first name, a necessity as world populations grew, it wasn't until the 11th century that surnames began to be used throughout Europe. The History and Origin of the name Willis is English, which is the patronymic f

Summary of A Midsummer Night's Dream

William Shakespeare's theatrical comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream," is a brilliant play, taking the audience into a world of fairies, magic and love. Two characters, Bottom and Titania, meet in the forest, where Titania falls in love with Bottom. Her love for him is so consuming that she says whatever she needs to say that will coerce Bottom to stay in the forest with her. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" begins in a courtroom, then a court, a magical forest. This forest is where Bottom meets Titania, the fairy. Bottom is wanting to leave the forest, but Titania is trying to get him to stay. One of the first things she says is, "Out of this wood do not desire to go " (A Midsummer Night's Dream, 3.1. 134), which means that Titania does not think that Bottom should even bother leaving the forest. By saying that she wants him to stay, Titania seems as if she is trying to get Bottom to understand how magical and wonderful the forest is, and how terrible going back to the court would be. Tita

The Importance of Testosterone

In 1849, Arnold Berthold, a German scientist, conducted the first formal experiment pertaining to hormones. He noticed that chickens that were castrated during development grew up to be passive (lacking fighting and mating behaviors) compared to normal roosters. Arnold Berthold decided to implant testes into the abdomens of castrated chickens. The chickens with implanted testes grew up to behave like normal roosters. Thus, Berthold concluded that the testes much secret some sort of substance since they were not connected to nerves. He said, "The testes act upon the blood, and the blood acts upon the whole organism" (Berthold, 1849). In 1889, a Harvard professor (Brown), decided to inject himself with substance containing extracts from guinea pig and dog testicles; he called this concoction a "rejuvenating elixir " (Brown, 1889). Brown published in The Lancet that his energy, vigor, and overall health were restored, but the effects did not last long; Brown attributed this to placebo e

Literary Examples of Maintaining Moral Values

In "Angela's Ashes," by Frank McCourt, "The Sniper," by Liam O'Flaherty and "The Wind that Shakes the Barley," by Robert Dwyer Joyce, characters often face situations in which they must act to save themselves and their loved ones. In these situations, it is common for them to ignore right and wrong, implementing whatever method is best for their own benefit. Under extreme pressure or fear it is natural for human beings to abandon their morals in favor of survival instincts because they value survival over any mores. Morals are often abandoned in circumstances that involve war, family, and self preservation. In war, morals are often compromised due to the extreme pressure and fear. Killing becomes normal and victory is the only real goal; all else is forgotten. In The Wind that Shakes the Barley, when there is an informer within Damien's group of the IRA, Damien is forced to kill the informer in order to keep his cause alive. When asked if he will shoot him, Damien answers, "I studied

Catherine MacKinnon -Second Wave Feminism

In Mary Wollstonecraft's "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman," she attacks the sexual double standard that exists between men and women. The period after her work is thought of as the first wave of feminism (McCullough). The main goal of the first wave of feminism was to attain political and legal equality among men and women. The many supporters of the first wave of feminism, both male and female, lobbied for women's suffrage. The first country to introduce the right for women to vote was New Zealand in 1893, and much later in many other countries. It was not until 1916 that women were deemed democratically equal to men in some parts of Canada. Quebec, which lagged behind the rest of Canada, did not introduce women's suffrage until 1940. Other legal issues in Quebec continued to prevent basic women's rights for example women were not allowed to separate from their spouse on the grounds of adultery until 1955, and were not allowed to buy or sell goods or services without their husba

Jean Piaget's Theories Cognitive Development

Piaget developed theories to explain the cognitive development and logical thinking in children. His interest in the cognition of children was motivated by the fact that all children appeared to go through the same discoveries in the same sequences and appeared to make to make the same mistakes and thought of the same solutions, according to Boyd and Bee (2008). Piaget recognized three important processes in children's cognition in their creating of schemes. A scheme is described as an internal cognitive structure that provides an individual with a procedure to follow in a specific circumstance, plainly, it's the way we know how to do something, e.g. if an individual is thirsty and needs water, their scheme allows them to lift a glass of water to their mouth. Piaget believed that each person was born with a set of sensory and motor schemes. Assimilation is how we make sense of a scheme, accommodation allows us to edit a scheme in order to add new information and equilibrium is balancin

Development of Academic and Professional Skill

To successfully compete in the hectic and complex business world, it's important to possess outstanding skills that will distinguish you in a positive way. Being a good learner and constantly developing your personality are necessary skills that individuals who want to succeed should strive for. One way to define the meaning of learning styles is, "employing diverse forms of behavior made of cognitive, effective and psychological factors that present the appropriate indicators of the learners' observation, collaboration and reaction to the learning environment" (Curry, 1981). Completing Neil Fleming's VARK questionnaire I realized that my preferred learning style is Tactile /Kinaesthetic or also known as the Active Learner Style. I learn best not from explanation or direction; but from doing it. Felder and Silverman (1988, p. 71) described that in the Tactile/Kinaesthetic Learning Style, "Learning comes through touching and physical sensation. Thinking is anchored by movement, and tou

Aspects of Psychology in the Workplace

To be in a career suitable for me I have to be the best person that I can possibly be. I can't let my emotions get the best of me for this career that I'm planning to pursue in. My major is undecided at the moment, but I would love to be a coach. According to the My Plan Assessments, my emotional focus is extroverted, meaning, an extrovert leaves a social function feeling charged up and rejuvenated. I am a person who is very talkative and friendly. I love to be around a group of people that love to have a good time and that are very outgoing. My emotional focus being extroverted is they love to be around big groups of people that interact with others and that are very good leaders. That basically describes the job that I'm thinking about going to become. To be a leader such as a coach is a big responsibility. That profession is just you have to be on the ball, you have to be aware of certain things. This career you definitely have to work well with others because if you don't you

The Turn of the Screw and The Sandman

The main similarity between "The Turn of the Screw," by Henry James, and "The Sandman," by E.T.A. Hoffman is that the main character in each story saw something - or thinks they saw something - that changes their life. The governess in "The Turn of the Screw" starts off loving her job and the kids she tends to, until she begins to see, what she believes, are ghosts. In "The Sandman," the young protagonist, Nathaniel, seems to be a typical child, until one day, he spies on his dad and sees him and the Sandman doing something strange in his father's room. Nathaniel becomes frightened, screams aloud and is pulled from his hiding spot by Coppelius, who then yelled at him, "Eyes here' eyes!" (Hoffman 3). His father stops Coppelius, but not before Nathaniel is scared for life. Then, about a year later Nathaniel's father was killed by an explosion during one of their experiments, so, now, as a little child, Nathaniel has two big reasons to be completely terrified of who he thinks is "The Sand

Choosing Fresh or Modified Foods

Living in a society where the government controls just about everything, I would like to think I would have the ability to control what goes into my body. As society enters a more modern age, where humans are starting to become more aware of what they are consuming. Humans are doing so by being more cautious with labels and nutrition facts while grocery shopping. On Kauai one of the biggest controversies' going on right now is whether or not to ban Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO). GMO's should not be banned on Kauai; instead Kauai should pass a bill that states all GMO foods have to be labeled. A genetically modified organism is an organism that has been through factory machines and genetic engineering. On Kauai the bill 2491 has been in debate over the last few months whether or not they should ban the use of pesticides. The bill will force agricultural companies to disclose when and where they spray pesticides, restrict spraying to a certain distance away from public areas, and
