Vygotsky - Human Cultural and Biosocial Development

This essay discusses the theory of cognitive development in relation to mathematical knowledge. The age I have chosen is five to six years of age. To begin, I will discuss Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development, then linking Vygotsky's theory to the Australian Curriculum and describing how the development of maths knowledge is encouraged within Vygotsky's theory, followed by discussing Piaget's theory of development and whether to consider if that is best suited for the age group I have chosen. To conclude my essay, I will summarize both of the theories and chose which is best suited for the learning of mathematics for the age level I have chosen. Lev Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development looks at how children learn from the environment around them. Vygotsky believed children are born with certain mental functions such as the ability to focus on particular objects. However, according to his theory children lack higher mental functions such as thinking and problem solving.

Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) - Nike

Strength • Nike is a very competitive organization. Phil Knight (Founder and CEO) is often quoted as saying that 'Business is war without bullets.' Nike has a healthy dislike of its competitors. • It is the number one sports brand in the World. Its famous 'Swoosh' is instantly recognizable, and Phil Knight even has it tattooed on his ankle. Associates itself with leading international sports teams. • Nike has no factories. No cash is buildings and manufacturing workers. This makes a very lean organization. • Nike is strong at research and development, as is evidenced by its evolving and innovative product range. • Ventured into many different rebranding opportunities with successful results. Weakness • The income of the business is still heavily dependent upon its share of the footwear market, which leaves it vulnerable if for any reason its market shares erode. • Competitors are becoming more aggressive and creating high quality products that are ta

A Bird Came Down the Walk - Emily Dickinson

Theme: The poem deals, among other things, with the relationship between nature and humanity. At the start the poet is just observing the bird ("He did not know I saw"). She does not interfere, but she is not passive, as her observations are quite detailed e.g. noticing the Beetle. She is a presence in the poem from line 2, but we don't find out much about her as the focus is on the bird. The human interference, finally, in line 14 ("I offered him a crumb") disturbs the scene - the bird flies away ("he unrolled his feathers"). Yet this is not necessarily or entirely seen as a bad thing - it is at this stage, when the bird takes off that her writing takes off into metaphor ("Too silver for a seam"). It is as if the whole scene has been transformed, and her writing reflects that. Is she suggesting that good can and does come from human interference in natur

Psalm 84 - Finding Our Home with God

The Psalms are compiled of one hundred fifty spiritual songs and poems used by Gods people in all ages in worship and devotional exercises. There are many different genres of Psalms as well as many different authors. Psalm 84 is a relatively small psalm consisting of only twelve verses. Depending on the scholar there are different ways in which this psalm is broken up. Psalms 84 is a psalm of praise and worship to God. This paper will take a closer look into Psalm 84, located in the 3rd book of the 5 books of Psalms. Psalm 84 reads: "How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow had found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young - a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set

The Basics of Solar Energy

Solar energy is created by the sun when nuclear fusion reactions occur in its core. It can be used to execute tasks such as providing hot water to, heating, cooling, and lighting buildings by generating copious amounts of electricity. It is hands down the most important and vital factor of life of earth. Any significant change in the power of its radiation would alter life on Earth as we know it or end life on Earth all together. The Earth naturally collects energy from the sun by means of plant life, oceans, and the atmosphere. Humans can and may use this solar power to influence the field of technology. A direct way to obtain solar energy is by using one of two potential and different kinds of artificial collectors. These artificial collectors can be either flat plate or concentrating collectors. Flat plate collectors are thin boxes with a see-through cover. These collectors are then placed on rooftops facing the direction of the sun and are used for water and space heating. Concentrating collectors, however, are more complicated and expensive than their fl

College Acceptance Essay - Dance School

Imagine a middle school student who is equipped with his iTunes, earbuds, and sometimes a mirror; almost every available moment of the day. Your first perception may be that he merely enjoys listening to music, or perhaps it's just a teenage fad. Only to discover that it was a daily demonstration of his undiscovered passion for dance and creative body movement. At the age of thirteen I was accepted into The Baltimore School for the Arts TWIGS program for dance, where I studied the basics techniques of ballet, health, and fitness. Although I was much older than most of the participants in my class, I never considered myself to be at a disadvantage. Grateful for the challenging opportunity, I remained diligent, enthusiastic, and open to creativity. My unpretentious dedication bared fruit in 2010. The Baltimore School for the Arts High School as a dance department offered

Thin Build Athletes and Eating Disorders

Athletes who participate in "thin-build" sports - gymnastics, dance, figure skating and long distance running - are at a greater risk of developing eating disorders than their "rowdy" sport counterparts. Since athletes are known to be competitive and perfectionistic, they are "at a predisposition to embody many obsessive traits, putting them at a higher risk for disordered eating" (Disordered). The constant pressure placed on athletes by family, coaches and their communities, may pressure them to engage in unhealthy practices in order to appease those expectations and achieve success on the field. There are often strong beliefs in these sports that lower weight athletes perform better than their heavier peers. As in many cases, it is believed that a lower body mass index among athletes increases athletic performance and agility for a variety of different reasons. These reasons stem from the belief that lower body mass often delays puberty in females and secondly, that a lighter

The Leadership of Nelson Mandela

Desmond Tutu offers a great commentary on Mandela's authentic leadership style stating, "Nelson Mandela has a knack of doing just the right thing...it's not anything you can contrive" (Carlin, Playing the Game, page 224). Earlier, Mandela had displayed uncharacteristic emotion following the 1993 Nobel Prize ceremony, commenting on the horrid treatment of prisoners on Robbin Island in the presence of de Klerk and dignitaries. As Carlin states, "He was human after all; he was not a saint" (Carlin, Playing the Enemy, page 143). Letting his emotions show, Mandela demonstrated to the world that he was guided not only by wisdom and principles, but through empathy, as well. Transformational Leadership A transformational leader leads in such a way that he/she connects with his "followers" on a personal level. The opening comments of Mandela's to the book, "Don't Address their Brains. Address Their Hearts,"" (Carlin, Playing the Enemy) illustrates the path to transformation he was seeking. T

Important Figures in Canadian History

1) John A. Macdonald was Canada's first Prime Minister. He started his political career as a councilor for Kingston in 1843. After four years, he decided to move to provincial politics. He was elected as the Conservative party's member for Kingston in 1847. He managed to unite French and English politicians, which allowed the new Liberal-Conservative party to form the government. To deal with the Province of Canada's economic and political problems, a group of politicians, led by Macdonald, came up with the idea of joining with the Maritime colonies to form a larger country. Macdonald was a significant person in Canada's road to confederation, which is why he was asked to be Canada's first Prime Minister. While he was Prime Minister, he built the Canadian Pacific Railway. He also opposed the Métis in the Red River Resistance, and the Northwest Rebellion, which led to the hanging of Louis Riel. 2) George Stephen was president of the Bank of Montreal, was one of the investor

Institution Facilities for Juvenile Offenders

Institution facilities are defined as secure facilities which include detention centers, orientation and diagnostic assessment centers, transfer facilities, boot camps, youth ranches and camps, institutions and state schools, and transitional facilities. Some juvenile correctional facilities look very much like adult prisons. Others seem very much like "home." Private facilities continue to play a substantial role in the long-term custody of juveniles, in contrast to adult correctional systems. In fact, nationwide there are more than twice as many privately operated juvenile facilities as publicly operated facilities, although private facilities hold less than half as many juveniles as are held in public facilities. The varied locations of these facilities is a clear indicator of diversity in both function and correctional style of the jurisdiction. Juveniles that stay in these facilities are generally classified into to (2) groups. There are the juveniles that are awaiting a detention or adjudication h

Media - Evaluation of a Music Video Production

Time Management Throughout this whole production process our time management hasn't been organized or on time. At the start of our production we started of really well and started hitting our targets. On the 19/1/13 we arranged to take the shots 1-6 and develop them in the storyboard and we all came and did exactly that. That was our first filming all together and we all worked well in our group and there were no problems. We then started getting to the end of our filming time in the lessons and when it was supposed to happen and when it actually did happen were months apart because not everyone could make it, or they didn't contribute to the minutes meetings. For example on the 17th of April we were supposed to stay after school and work on more shots but it actually happened on the 1st of May. When we did the minutes meeting we should have waited till everyone was there and then decided when to film, this would have meant that all of the member of the group would have been there

Adolescence and the Common Identity Crisis

Adolescence is a transitional stage of physical and psychological human development, occurring during the period from puberty to legal adulthood. This is the time where most individuals mature, plan their future, and become the person that they are. The teenage years have a lot of things packed into them; the onslaught of puberty, becoming more mature, making new and immediate decisions and deciding what type of person he/she would like to become. Many teenagers hope to become well rounded people, succeeding in life and facing as few troubles as possible. But reality is, somewhere along the way, major life turbulence will strike. Major factors that impact one's identity could be their childhood, what environment they have or do put themselves in, and how they socialize. These three have the greatest impact on a teen's identity because it is something they are exposed to all the time. Think of the biggest things that have impacted who you are today; guaranteed one of those three are i

Dropping the Atom Bomb

Near the end of World War II, the United States dropped two bombs on Japan; one on the city of Hiroshima and the other on Nagasaki. The bombs devastated both cities and caused short term and long term problems. The two bombs immediately killed about 120,000 people but also gave many radiation poisoning. In the following weeks, more Japanese died from radiation poisoning. The citizens who survived had an increased risk of cancer and some had deformed babies. Dropping bombs and wiping out entire cities full of people is immoral and completely unnecessary. The U.S. made the wrong decision because of health problems, innocent citizens dying, and it was immorally wrong. The survivors of the bombing were faced with difficult situations that crippled them for generations. Anyone in the radius of the bomb most likely had some sort of radiation poisoning. Radiation poisoning lead to an increased risk in cancer and malformations in babies. We all know how terrible cancer is and how many lives the disease has taken. The survivors now had an increased risk in getting cancer which is so unfortunate and sad. If any of the survivors had kids

Overview of Standards for Teachers

A teacher must do the following: 1. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils 2. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils 3. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge 4. Plan and teach well structured lessons 5. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils - Know when and how to differentiate appropriately, using approaches which enable pupils to be taught effectively - Have a secure understanding of how a range of factors can inhibit pupils' ability to learn, and how best to overcome these - Demonstrate an awareness of the physical, social and intellectual development of children, and know how to adapt teaching to support pupils' education at different stages of development - Have a clear understanding of the needs of all pupils, including those with special educational needs; those of high ability; those with English as an additional language; those with disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distin

Elements of Dishonesty in The Great Gatsby

F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, "The Great Gatsby," provides a commentary on a variety of themes, including justice, power, greed, time, betrayal, and the pursuit of the American Dream. One of these themes, the American Dream is announced by Nick Carraway, the narrator of the book and main character and at the end of the novel when he talks about the collapse of the American dream of happiness and individuality. In particular, he exposes the lie that one can use money to transform one's dreams into reality. Jay Gatsby, who tries desperately to recapture the past with his attempts to win Daisy back, develops another theme, time. However, as important as these themes are to the novel, another message that is even more central to the story is moral corruption. Three characters that develop this theme are Meyer Wolfsheim, Tom Buchanan, and Jay Gatsby. Meyer Wolfsheim, a mysterious person and Jay Gatsby's business associate, is quite loyal. Mr. Wolfsheim is Gatsby's friend, a prominen

Technology, Economy and the Workplace

The Information Revolution brought about great change in the labor force; creating new jobs as well as modifying how many jobs had once been performed. The advent of the computer began a tremendous surge of technological advancements never before seen on the planet, and nearly every aspect of humanity would be affected. People now did their jobs differently due to the new technology, and new positions of employment were created to take advantage of these technologies. And for the most part, these changes were good; "The Information Revolution brought a shift from older, blue-collar industrial jobs toward newer, white-collar service work." (Macionis, 2010, p.292). The majority of professional positions remained intact, and new positions were created for young professionals who were getting their feet wet in the new wave of technology. Even though new jobs were created other jobs were eliminated. "As the economy created new service jobs, it lost old industrial jobs."

The Evolution of the Post-Development Theory

Article Reviews As editor of the book, "Exploring Post-Development," Aram Ziai provides an introductory look at the discussions of post-development theory, taking a cursory look at the various arguments for, or against, post-development. Ziai expertly delivers an overview of the post-development movement, having arisen in the 1980s as a response to the dissatisfaction with the concept and practice of "development" already in place. Ziai more or less defines this movement as placing an emphasis on alternatives to development via grassroots, local and regional movements. Alongside support for post-development theory, Ziai also provides the criticisms, some of which are to be addressed in the book, for the audience. Nevertheless, both proponents and critics must agree on the two central post-development hypotheses that the traditional concept of "development" has tones of Euro-centrism and authoritarian and technocratic undertones. In his article, Escobar provide

The Doha Development Round

The indefinite suspension of the Doha Development Round created significant risks for developing countries in regards to world trade, as well as to the World Trade Organization (WTO). The current WTO trade round was launched, November 2001, in Doha Qatar, and its agenda has been ambitious; aiming to cut barriers in agriculture as well as the highly protected services sector. It also set out to write new globalization policies in areas such as investment and competition. Its main focus though was to help the poor. The rich promised to open their markets in area like farming and textiles to poor countries so heavily dependent on these sectors. They also promised to help not just with cash and debt cancellation but also with technical assistance. Unfortunately, despite these potential gains, governments in both rich and poor countries have gone back on promises and commitments made to the Doha agenda. The world's developed nations must do all they can to resist the threat of a retur

The Day of the Earthquake

It was March 12, 2010. I was asphyxiating inside the classroom and feeling drowsy while my teacher taught the lesson. Outside, the sun was scorching, shooting its rays through the windows, directly onto our skin. I was sweating and uncomfortable to say the least. 'd had a delicious lunch, and with my appetite satisfied, I was in a daze, nearly falling asleep at my desk. As my eyes got heavier, I was suddenly brought to attention by a pile of books falling off the teacher's desk and crashing loudly on the floor. It was abrupt and the other students and I looked around in shock as the classroom began to shake and the floor began to roll like ocean wave. In a split second, a jolt seemed to drive right up my spine, causing a sharp pain in my head. My eyes darted up to the ceiling, moving and shifting, beginning to buckle from the constant shaking. Cracks appeared in the concrete ceiling, and small pieces of it began breaking off and crashing down on us. was being which I knew was going

Iron Oxide Nanoparticles

Iron [26Fe], a metal in the first transition series, is one of the most ubiquitous and abundant elements existing in the inner and outer core of the Earth. Iron has sixteen oxides and hydroxides; two stable oxidation states in an aqueous solution of ferrous, Fe(II), and the ferric, Fe(III)[1]. Iron oxides are widespread in nature; they are also conveniently synthesized in the laboratory. More likely it indicates that iron has a great tendency to be reactive in large-scale applications, so it leads to the importance in nano-scale applications. That's why it has considerably become important for the recent developments in the field of nanotechnology since it potentially has the magnetic and catalytic properties. The most common iron oxides existed in nature are arguably the magnetite, Fe3O4, maghemite, γ-Fe2O3, and hematite, α-Fe2O3, which have b

Dynamics of Prometheus and Zeus

According to Greek mythology, the gods Prometheus and Zeus were at odds with each other because Prometheus had, despite Zeus' wishes, given the gift of fire to humans. Zeus was enraged to see that humans were given the gift of fire, and he punished Prometheus for this by having Hephaestus, the Greek god of blacksmiths, bind him to a rock. The rest of the story describes Prometheus' interactions with the chorus and various other characters, and how he explains his actions and remains defiant even when being threatened by Hermes. There are multiple interpretations of Prometheus' actions and his role in the overall scheme of things, but in each we can see how he fits the definition of the classic trickster who we see in many other myths. In "Introduction to Modern Mythology," by Thury and Devinney, we read that the trickster is valued as a transformer of culture, or a cultural hero (pp. 228). This can be seen not only in the story of Prometheus, but also in many other myths. A trickster

The War of 1812: America's Second War of Independence

"Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light..." These words from "The Star Spangled Banner" are familiar to nearly every American, but the war that gave rise to them is often-times forgotten. The song was written during the War of 1812; often referred to as the Second War of Independence. It's also known as one of the most overlooked wars in United States history, often bookended by the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Altogether, this war, which lasted for just about two years, basically ended in a stalemate as a result of the Treaty of Ghent. In fact, many have argued that U.S. actually lost, or at the very least gained nothing out of the war, and that it was pointless. However, this is not true, as the War of 1812 was a war over America's struggle to maintain independence from Great Britain and confirm its legitimacy as a nation. After the Revolutionary War, the British did not treat the U.S. as an independent, sovereign nation and demonstrated antagonistic practices bot

Benefits of Conducting Business in Canada

As an entrepreneur living in the United States, and for some reason didn't want to operate a business venture here, my first choice, and best option for a foreign direct and profitable investment would be moving my business to the healthy and wealthy country of Canada. Canada is considered a well-developed country and is in fact one of the wealthiest in the world according to Beth Greenfield, a writer for Forbes. Canada is ranked 14th of the richest country on the planet with eighth highest per capita income globally, it's gross domestic product is 1.821 trillion USD for 2012, Canada is part of the G7 and the eleventh highest ranking in the Human Development Index according to hdrstats.org, also known as the International Human Development Report (HDR).
