The Progression of Managerial Responsibility

ABSTRACT The duties and status quo of managers and supervisors* in the U.S. have altered dramatically since the founding of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the establishment of the Labor Management Relations Act (LMRA). While the LMRA explicitly states that supervisors are excluded from any type of bargaining agreement, there is indisputable evidence that the position of manager has become more multifaceted than ever before. The LMRA defines "supervisor" as "any individual having authority, in the interest of the employer, to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline other employees, or responsibly to direct them, or to adjust their grievances, or effectively to recommend such action, if in connection with the foregoing the exercise of such authority is not of a merely routine or clerical nature, but requires the use of independent judgment" (NLRB.org). Is this definition immune to the ever-changing d

Has Tipping Become Obsolete?

Should tipping a person for good service continue to be considered social etiquette? From the heart of the West Coast through the bumpy ride of owning a restaurant in San Diego, Jay Porter explains how he adopted his new restaurant policy and gives wise examples from a six year long restaurant-owning experience. Michael Lewis is one of the best writers and editors at Vanity Fair magazine, and the author of several famous books including "Liar's Poker" (1990), and most recently, "Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood" (2009) and "The Case Against Tipping," which was published in the New York Times Magazine (1997). Jay Porter is the founder of the Linkery restaurant in San Diego, himself and his staff came up; with new a policy for his restaurant to make more fairness between servers and cooks, he started; adding a service charge of 18% to every dine-in bill. Michael Lewis feels that the tipping concept may create direct physical and indirect mental problems in the cu

Elephants and Communication

1.0 Introduction Elephants are social animals that live in family units of related females and their offspring. The families cover vast age ranges and the members interact with other elephant families. Elephants have the ability to produce and detect near-infrasonic, low frequency, high amplitude vocalisations. The acoustic and seismic waves produced are subject to less attenuation and can travel for much greater distances. 2.0 Hearing Sensitivity in Elephant The first studies on the ability of Asian elephants to produce infrasonic calls found that calls in the range of frequency of 14-24Hz were common (Payne et al, 1986). The recordings taken at 5m from captive elephants had sound pressure levels of 85-90dB. These low-frequency sounds were inaudible to the experimenters. Rumbles in the audible range coincided with a 'fluttering' of the skin where the nasal passage joins the skull, and was also observed to occur when rumbles were produced in the infrasonic range. This was us

Notes on a College English Course

Colleges and Universities require incoming freshmen to take assessment tests to determine their placement in English and Math. These tests vary from school to school, but they typically consist of multiple-choice questions as well as requiring students to write a short essay to assess their writing skills. After a week or so, the score of the assessments are made available online or they will be mailed to you. Some really high scores allows students to skip certain courses in college. A low score indicates that one must take preparatory classes before being allowed to take college-level course. After receiving my scores in the mail I learned that I was going to be taking a remedial Math and English course. I didn't know what to expect! All I can remember was telling my mom that I felt stupid because I was not only going to be taking one remedial class but two through my freshman year of college. In a sense I thought, "Hey since two of my classes are remedial they might just be pi

Men, Women and Wage Equality

Throughout the history of our nation, women have struggled to be held equally to men on a gender standpoint. Since the first women's rights movement in Seneca Falls 1848, the Women's Equal Rights Movement has made immense gains in the recent century. This progress can be seen by the passing of the nineteenth amendment, ability to choose any career, equality in American liberties, and overall right to happiness. In spite of the improvement seen in gender equality, wage problems in the workplace still exist which deny women equal pay for equal work in comparison to men. The immense disparity in wage equality between males and females is apparent by analyzing the status quo. The Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963, which "aimed at abolishing wage disparity based on sex " (NPR). Although the severity of the situation lessened, "in 2007, women's median annual paychecks reflected only 78 cents for every 1 dollar earned by men. Specifically for women of color, the gap is even wider: In compari

Comparing Rap and Blues Music

Blues and rap are two extremely controversial music genres that arose from the black community. Both styles of music are frequently seen as rebellious - even sacrilegious. The roots of blues music can be traced to Negro spirituals. The negative connotation associated with both genres can be greatly attributed to the elements of sex, gambling, and drinking which are commonly associated with rap and blues. Blues music is very structured in its form. Songs are usually 12bars, 16 bars, or 8 bars. Each has a very specific set of rhyme schemes. Call and response is common in blues. Repetition of lines is also common. Blues can be both sung and spoken. Blues was created at the tail end of the 19th century in the South region of the United States. It was influenced heavily by sacred sorrow songs, work songs, and spirituals. Southern blues was used to express struggles and sorrowful occurrences that were common in the African American communities. Lost love, bad luck, discrimination and loss

Grandma's Kitchen

In the suburbs of Orlando, FL, stood a beautiful two story home. This house consisted of five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and most importantly, a kitchen filled with beautiful antiques and wonderful aromas. Grandma's kitchen was a place I could go to eat her delicious homemade food. She made sure that her kitchen would represent three things: food, family, and fun. This kitchen was an integral part of my family's closeness, our strength and our love for each other. Grandma's kitchen is where my family's moral codes and values were solidified in my life. Each time I walked into her kitchen, I was reminded of a 1960's kitchen. Against the back wall stood a gigantic stove. Every two weeks, my parents and I would polish it to keep its shine. Around its edges, the chrome sparkled and the white porcelain circle in the center of the door displayed the stove's manufacture: "Hartland." At the left end stood a reservoir fill

Notes on The Spanish Tragedy and Hamlet

The revenge tragedy became a popular genre of drama in England in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The revenge tragedy genre was based off the work of the Roman playwright, Seneca. The first well known revenge tragedy was "The Spanish Tragedy," by Thomas Kyd, which was first performed around 1592. It is often considered the inspiration for William Shakespeare's most famous revenge tragedy, "Hamlet." Kyd's play predates Shakespeare's by at least six years if not longer as the exact publishing and performance dates for each are not absolutely certain. It is therefore plausible that Kyd's work influenced Shakespeare's masterpiece, "Hamlet." There many similarities between the two plays that could support this hypothesis including the metatheatricality, the visitation of the victim's ghost, the violent murder/suici

Self-Esteem and Body Image

LITERATURE REVIEW There is a growing amount of evidence-based research that proves that body disturbance issues are on the rise. The cultural ideals of beauty and body image encourage individuals to conform to the many pressures that exist to be thin. The cultural framework suggested that culture and society explain why so many young children are concerned about their appearance. These ideals have negatively influenced many young girls. In fact, the dissatisfaction of body disturbances has led to unwanted and unintended health conditions. Health conditions include depression, low self esteem, social isolation, and eating disturbances. Individuals who accept the cultural ideals compare themselves to individuals like thin models in the fashion industry, celebrities in the media, and others whom they consider to ha

The Beginning and End of the American Revolution

The year was 1775, and the thirteen British colonies were going through major changes. The colonists were angry; angry that the British crown was doing all they could to maintain full control over them. The colonists demanded that the British crown relinquish their stronghold over them - in particular, stop the oppression of heavy, burdensome taxes. And true to form, the tough and determined colonists would not take "no" for an answer. Inevitably, the tug-of-war between Britain and the colonies intensified, with one side of the political rope destined to overcome the other. A revolution was born; "a violent attempt...to end the rule of one government and start a new one"" (Revolution). The colonists demanded independence and relief from the control of the crown, and with the British holding fast to their power, a revolution was born - and it would forever change the relationship between America and Great Britain. The American Revolution officially began on April 19th 1775, when, t

The Briarwood Industries Case

Case Summary The Briarwood Industries case depicts a difficult decision that one of their current employees, Diane Williamson, is facing. Diane is frustrated that another employee, Larry Jaccobi, was chosen over her for the promotion to Vice President of the company. Throughout her career Diane recognized Briarwood's potential for expansion into the foreign markets and capitalized on that by securing a multi-million dollar supply contract for the company. She felt that she was more than qualified to lead this company. In her emotional state, Diane informs Sandy McBride, her confidant at work, about her plan to resign. Diane points to her numerous managerial roles within the company and her ability to be "a team player" as the main basis for her promotion. Gender Roles - Boys, Girls and ToysRUs

Over the weekend, I visited a very popular toy store called "ToysRUs." The store is huge - filled with literally thousands of toys boys, girls and adults! The first unique thing I noticed about the store was that they separated the toys that were for boys on a completely different side of the store and away from all the girl's toys. In the middle of the store however, there was the toys that were made for both genders to play with. It was almost like they purposely separated the boys and girls toys from each other so that the neither gender would wander over to toys designed for the opposite gender. The toys that they had for boys in the store looked like they were typical toys that boys have been playing with for generations. Some of them were action figures, nerf guns, legos, male Disney character stuffed animals, footballs, toy airplanes, and numerous building sets. The girl's side of the store on the other hand looked completely different. It was much prettier then the guys

Definitive Aspects of Christianity

Introduction Christianity has been a subject of much debate and controversy for many years. There have been many theologians who have studied Christianity and created doctrine of their own interpretation of Scripture. The doctrines that have caused much debate and have been argued for centuries would be Calvinism and Arminianism. There has been opposing views by churches and other theologians that has caused much controversy over these two doctrines. Calvinism is based on the theological beliefs and teachings by John Calvin and Arminianism is based on the views of Jacobus Arminius. Arminius was once a strict Calvinist who studied under John Calvin and later studies led him to doubt and reject many of the Calvinistic doctrines. To label oneself as either a Calvinist or Arminianist would need to fully understand each of their doctrines. PART ONE Calvinism "The theological system of John Calvin and his followers marked by strong emphasis on the sovereignty of God, the depravity of

The Columbine Massacre

Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris were not your average teenagers. According to their journals, notes, and videos, Klebold had been thinking of committing suicide in 1997, and they both begun thinking about a large massacre in April 1998. The two had already run into trouble, and were arrested for breaking into a van on January 30, 1998. Since they were first time offenders, the two began a juvenile diversion program. For eleven months, the boys were doing everything they could to convince everyone they were sorry for what they did. No one knew that the whole time they were planning for a large massacre at their high school. Klebold and Harris were angry teenagers. They didn't just hate the athletes who made fun of them, or Christians, or blacks, but basically hated everyone except for certain people. They kept journals that expressed their true feelings about everything. "Harris opened his private journal with the sentence, "I hate the f---ing world." And when the media studied Harris, t

Men - Control, Aggression and Masculinity

Background of Domestic Violence Domestic violence and psychological abuse are identified as, "behaviors used by one person in a relationship to control the other" (http://www.domesticviolence.org/). Most people believe that it only occurs among women of color, who are married and living in poor communities. They also believe that the causes of it are primarily due to drug and alcohol related content (http://www.domesticviolence.org/). However, all of these assumptions are false; domestic and emotional abuse can happen to anyone, anywhere. According to Futures Without Violence, an organization dedicated towards addressing gender-based violence and child abuse, "women of all ages are at risk for domestic and sexual violence, and those age 20 to 24 are at the greatest risk of experiencing nonfatal intimate partner violence" (http://www.futureswithoutviolence.org/). Also, women are more likely than men to be a victim of domestic violence, carried out by a former or cu

Recognizing the Importance of African Americans

"Why do we still celebrate black history month?" This might seem like a silly question to someone and definitely was to the author of "Still Hyphenated Americans," Julianne Malveaux. America definitely seems like a land of opportunity to many of us, but not long ago, African Americans were looked down upon and treated as less-than white citizens. What began as Negro History week in 1926, has evolved into an American tradition known as Black History Month. Author Julianne Malyeaux shares her thoughts on the national recognition of African Americans. The month is set aside, designated as a way to show respect and affirm our recognition of the struggle that blacks went through - and in some ways, are still going through. There are many reasons people should celebrate black history month, according to the author it helps blacks be better represented in the media, it is an important way to r

Athletes and Brain Injuries

Some sports are very violent, leading to severe, traumatic and sometimes permanent injuries. Most athletes will tell you they have never been diagnosed with a concussion and although this may be true a lot of the time, after receiving a blow to the head if you start to feel dizzy, nauseous if you can't remember the previous play, if you've blacked out, have double vision or anything along those lines it means you have a concussion. In 2002, Dr. Bennet Omalu dissected the brain of former NFL center Mike Webster, finding that he had suffered chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the result of a brain injury that causes the brain to slowly break down from repetitive trauma. This injury is particularly hard to detect without dissecting the brain. In 2009, the University Of Michigan did a study on retired NFL players as
