Let me just start by saying my name, my name is. I came to America when I was 9 years old. During my years in school my family helped me with my problems. My father who helped me understands the true meaning to school. My mother, who is a computer programmer, taught me to be the best that I can be. My sister who is currently in college has helped me with my school work and made sure that I don't make the same mistakes that she made. My grandfather has taught me to be patient and not give up an anything. He inspired me to do better in school. My brother who helped me with any problems that I ha...
60 years ago, My grandfather's generation turned their heads while evil took hold of our world. His generation received a punch in the chin when it wasn't looking at Pearl Harbor. History tells us how his generation responded. My generation has turned its head while the evil of terrorism has taken hold of this world. On Sept. 11th, we received a punch in the chin while we weren't looking. How will my generation respond? I hope with the same patriotism, loyalty, and resolve that my grandfather's did. This is a tragedy. it should have never happened. I'm only 16 but this has affected my life and...
The age of the Enlightenment is when, during the eighteenth century, people began to question authority, religion and philosophize about life and science. The influential thinkers and writers of this period were called philosophes. These included Descartes, Pascal, Bayle, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau. Their four main points were: 1. To question the traditional authority, and traditional ideas of the Old Regime. 2. Believe in the existence of natural laws. 3. establish these laws as basis of human activity through human reasoning and 4. Hope everything would be perfected when we...
... good novel based on the Star Trek TV series, or for that matter on any TV show or movie, is the correspondence between the plot of the book and that of the source. One would expect at least a bit of harmony and accordance between the spirit of the loved science-fiction series and that ... of the books based on it. Although this book had several moments of suspense, I would not say that this is a masterpiece by any means. Perhaps the author simply does not have what it takes to ... write a good Star Trek novel. In my opinion, the plot is too far-fetched. In a TV episode of Star Trek: The...
... sexist is because of the way the men in the book are portrayed. The second way you can see the book is racist is by the narrator's actions toward men. The first reason the book is sexist is because the men are portrayed negatively throughout the book. The book seemed to focus on the negative aspects of the males personalities. "He was famous for drinking ... all that is said about the main character's father, nothing positive is said about him. Throughout the book, with very few exceptions, men are seen as negative influences to women. The second reason the book is sexist is Taylor's un...
... stories before about how slaves were beat, but I never really heard to what extent. Throughout the first ten chapters of this book it talks about how slaves were beat to near death many, many times. For example, just when the book starts in the very first chapter Fredrick Douglas talks about his very first experience of seeing someone getting beaten. He saw ... slaves stupid. They would not them learn to read or write. If they would catch someone teaching someone to read or write they would beat them profusely. This book has truly opened up my eyes to how things were back in the times o...

This extraordinary novel tells about a Japanese family that struggles to remain a family while living in an internment camp. The only thing that gave them the endurance and heart to go on was their national anthem. "May thy peaceful reign last long. May it last for thousands of years, Until this tiny stone will grow into a massive rock, and the moss will cover it deep and thick." This family goes through many hardships while living in Manzanar, some of them being having to live in barracks, living with a drunken father, and not eating their traditional foods. In my opinion, "Farewell to Manzan...
Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451, a science fiction novel, in 1953. The title F451 refers to the temperature at which books will begin to burn. This is a book that takes place in futuristic America during the 21st century. No particular year is given, however, 2 atomic wars have already been fought. Minorities objecting to books that offended them caused the beginning of the book banning. Soon, all books began to look the same, to avoid offending anyone. The Pine Barrens John Mcphee's "The Pine Barrens" is a unique descriptive novel, the novel deals with nature and all it's beauty. The story is easy to follow and easy to understand because it is being told through the eyes of a non-partial naturist. The novel was intriguing because it was so relatable to Philadelphia, the fact that the actually Pine Barrens are only about fifty miles away meant that whatever Mcphee experienced throughout the book was not far fetched form what I"d experience. The proximity on which Mcphee relates the Barrens to New York City meant that I've been past that value...
The Prince "The Prince" is a political handbook written by Niccolo Machiavelli as a gift for the Medici family in hope that it would get him back in the family's good grace. though I did not have much of an interest in, and did not understand a lot of Machiavelli's "the prince", of all the choices, I was most comfortable writing about on it, as it was still fresh on my mind from reading. Politics, and things of that nature really are not my favorite subject to read about, so getting into "the prince" I knew it was going to be quite a chore to get through. Though, I was surprised to find that m...

It was the first book that brought the problem of Negro slavery in America to the attention of the world. It became not only a bestseller, but a social documentary of the lives of slaves. Uncle Tom's Cabin, provides a definant protest against the soc...
