What is an ideal hero in epics? An ideal epic hero, a king or a warrior, in Beowulf is similar to that in the Odyssey and many other ancient tales. The whole kingdom will know him. He is always brave and larger-than-life strong. For example, in his battle with the monster Grendel, Beowulf used "bare hands", not some magic sword or an army of football players. The hero is also clever, he outsmarts the enemy with his seemingly mortal capabilities. He likes to brag about himself and his powers a lot, showing his self-esteem and pride. For instance, Beowulf wants the world to know about his majest...

"In the higher world form of good appears last of all, and is seen only with effort." -Plato I think that this summarizes a part of life that at least I couldn't summarize in only one sentence. What Plato is describing is how if you work hard, put in lots of effort, you will see results. Goodness only comes when a person wants to see it, and doesn't take advantage of it. When a person works really hard toward something in particular, and is dedicated to it, they will get what they were working for. Plato realizes that this method of getting what you want is possible, depending on the size of t...
This extraordinary novel tells about a Japanese family that struggles to remain a family while living in an internment camp. The only thing that gave them the endurance and heart to go on was their national anthem. "May thy peaceful reign last long. May it last for thousands of years, Until this tiny stone will grow into a massive rock, and the moss will cover it deep and thick." This family goes through many hardships while living in Manzanar, some of them being having to live in barracks, living with a drunken father, and not eating their traditional foods. In my opinion, "Farewell to Manzan...

There are many ways to break bad habits, different techniques work well with various bad habits. How difficult the bad habit is to break depends on what it is, for example, it is a lot easier to quit biting your fingernails then to quit smoking cigarettes. If there is no struggle there is no progress Progression is almost impossible without a struggle in one way or another. The struggle usually involves sacrificing and continuing regardless of ups and downs. Prominent leaders are often times great examples of the correlation between struggling and progression. There are few successful leaders that did not struggle at some point on their ladder to greatness and success. On some occasions a person may have fame and fortune but did not have to struggle to have it. Sometimes a person can have these things through family inheritance or by twisted fat...

Many people today do not give much thought to what their country represents and why they should be proud to live in it. I am very proud to be an American and live in America. An American is someone who loves their country and the people in it, and also believes in bettering their own lives as well as the lives of those around them. I fill that since I live in America I represent the leading country in the world, and I am able to achieve almost anything I set my mind too. Here people have a chance to make something of themselves and are free to decide how they wish to do it. In America when tro...
Critique: How I Learned to Sweep The poem "How I Learned to Sweep" is written beautifully. I like the rhyme scheme and the pentameter. I think its very unique how the author, Julia Alvarez, ties together the sweeping with the broom and the sweeping of the weeds from a helicopter dropping off troops. The lines " our soldiers were landing in their helicopters into jungles their propellers swept like weeds seen underwater- gives you a beautiful mental picture. You can actually see weeds underwater swaying and also weeds being swept down from a helicopter. Another visually strong element is this "...
Alzheimer's Disease Imagine a person you love is wandering the streets not knowing who or what anything is! Imagine, a police officer asking you where you last saw this person! Alzheimer's disease is a loss of memory and it can be temporary or permanent depending on how severe the case is. Saving Private Ryan Essay 1 man for 8 lives, will never make sense in my eyes. I do not see how anyone could send 8 men looking for 1 guy that may not even be alive. 8 potential soldiers wasting there ability to fight ... leave before the final battle he had fought in he would have done a favor for the soldiers that died. I believe Ryan killed the Captain Milller and some of his crew by not leaving when he should have. Therefore my beliefs are that 1 man is not worth 8 lives, and Captain Millers mission was pointless because they lost more lives then they saved ... ...
Stress is a huge problem for me in my time of life. Stress occurs when we adapt or adjust to the environment, mentally or physically. Every day there's something new that's stressful. My car will break, tests coming up, all at once of course. All of a sudden they"ll be a problem between me and one of my girl friends. Then to top it off, and it's not even anything hard or so aggravating, my mom would ask me to do something for her after my hard day and school and work, and then I just flip out.
