Why We Like Social Media

In the article, "Reconsidering Facebook", Hilary Davis, an associate head with a Master's in Library Science, writes how it can be beneficial to businesses. She states: .
With Facebook's population hitting around 500 million active users, half of which log in to Facebook every day, with each user being connected to an average of 130 users, this venue becomes a very compelling place for a profitable and worthwhile place for businesses and organizations to be as well. With their social plugins and business integration features (e.g., Open Graph API, mentioned previously) companies are able to generate more comments, discussion and interest than occurs on their own websites (Davis 2). Davis makes it clear that because of Facebook's popularity, it can be a good marketing strategy for businesses to use. The product or company has a better chance to be seen and talked about rather than on the company website alone. Using Facebook to market your work is a brilliant tool to make money. It costs zero dollars to activate your account and has the potential to make you millions. Sharing pictures of your work can spark interest and bring in more customers. .
Entertainment purposes are another popular reason to use social media. While scrolling on the timeline, you will see friend's videos, pictures, articles, etc. Facebook also has a game feature that you can engage in. It gives you the option to play with other users around the world or your friends that you have on your account. You can also find pages associated to only topics of interest. For example, Vine is a popular website that pertains to telling a story in a matter of seconds. So if I follow Vine's page, everything that they posts will come directly on my timeline. I will see it immediately. This is convenient because you wouldn't have to go on Vine's website to watch the same videos. .
With all the reasons to why people use social media, it can have a negative impact on real life relationships.
