The article, "The Influence of Teachers" talks about how important teachers, peers, and elders are in order to keep society and the social system alive and functioning properly. It discusses the importance of younger generations to grow up and carry on the values of their parents, community, and political commitments of their elders. "A social system can survive only as long as people are willing to support it." (2) Teachers play a role in instilling values to the youth of America not only values from parents and families. .
"The typical average American spend about five minutes a day alone with their fathers, and half of this time is spent watching televisionadolescents spend 40 minutes a day alone with their mothers, an hour with both parents" (4) This statement is one where I disagree strongly with. I spend more than five minutes a day with my son and half of the time is not spent watching television. Yes some of the time is but before bedtime and that only accounts for about ten minutes. I understand that I do not work full-time and that increases the amount of time that I see him but some days I do leave at 6:30 in the morning and do not pick him up from daycare until 4:30. I get the half an hour ride home, play time at home, (usually coloring, painting, and reading books) time at the dinner table, bath time, relaxing before bed, and reading more stories at bedtime. I do share this with my significant other and feel that Tanner gets a lot of attention from each of us that combine for more than the five minutes from myself and 40 minutes from Jennifer. I felt like a little defensive towards those statements in the article and it was challenging my family values that I have with my significant other and Tanner! .
I do however agree that teachers have a very important role and duty in the classroom. The teachers I had in school are the ones that were able to be approached and made learning fun.
