.
The child's perspective is a wonderfilled one, shown by the adjectives used to describe the clothesline, "silver skeletal arms". As the persona ages the reader is presented with a totally different image of the line, one where the line has turned into a piece of "sun warmed metal". .
The author uses a number of techniques to present her negative, pessimistic view of change, including juxtapositioning and flashbacks. The flashbacks juxtapose the child's and the adult's feelings, creating a negative perspective of change and also show that change has consequences. In this case the consequences of this change are feelings of nostalgia, and most importantly regret. The older persona feels regret that she can no longer swing on the clothesline, as there are "too many things tying her to the ground". .
Word choice and symbols further show the juxtaposition of the child and adults feelings. Symbolism such as " coloured flags in a secret code" symbolises the child's wonderfilled view of the world, and everything in it, especially the clothesline. The reader is then shown the contrast between the two personas, the adults misery filled one with the above symbolism going from "coloured flags." to "semaphore secrets in colourful t-shirts and socks".
Normal and colloquial language is also used to echo images of children's world, such as "vegie". This, along with the use of simple sentences such as " that's all they eat. I think.", is an emphasis on the childlike sections of the poem. .
