All of German overseas colonies were lost. It demanded a considerable loss of European territory and for the establishment of a Polish corridor, (to give Poland back its land and access to the Baltic Coast) which then separated East Prussia from the body of Germany. This was one of the terms that infuriated Germany the most, because they despised the Poles and believed they were an inferior race. Due to the Treaty, the German army was only allowed to have one standing army of no more than 100,000 men. The German army was always the foundation from where all the rulers and leaders of the nation had in the past emerged. It also meant that Germany was unable to defend itself. .
Germany was also made to pay a reparations bill for five billion in gold marks, between 1919 and 1921. Goods including; coal, timber, ships and cattle etc. were to be sent to the countries that were triumphant in World War One. These goods were desperately needed in Germany who had also suffered much damage and loss during the war. These demands by the allies led Germany to be deeply geographically and economically scarred. The treaty forced the Germans to take responsibility for starting World War one. The German people were in a desperate and degrading plight. They were looking for someone to blame for this predicament and also a way out of these unbearable circumstances. This was another factor to the rise of the Nazi party. .
Adolf Hitler had this to say about the treaty, "This means, exclusively the rescue of the enslaved German nation we have today. Germany is bound hand and foot by the peace treaties. . . .The National Socialists do not regard these treaties as law, but as something imposed upon Germany by constraint. We do not admit that future generations, who are completely innocent, should be burdened by them. If we protest against them with every means in our power, then we find ourselves on the path of revolution.
