At first glance, it appears that such education is to prepare a child for life as an adult, this is true. .
However, as technology has advanced, so have the specialty fields of study, so that education in America today consists of a blend of basic concepts, upon which are built the advanced studies needed for highly specialized trades and professions. For example, in my classroom observations I noticed a much higher rate of real life relevance. The teachers seemed to be intent on the connection of the specific topics to a trade that could be used later in life. I also realized that, unlike when I was in elementary school, the teacher seemed to cater to those students who weren't college bound as well as those who were. The lessons did not seem to be completely text oriented but directly related to current events without ignoring the basic skills needed to survive in the world of work. .
For this reason I see a direct correlation to two philosophies, progressivism seeing the world as ever changing and essentialism believing that there exists a critical core of information and skill that an educated person must have. (Ryan &Cooper, p. 313-316) .
The Role of a Teacher.
"Teachers are constantly doing things that would not have even been considered part of the school's responsibility just a few years ago.".
Walter Fitzgerald.
The role of the effective teacher has changed dramatically over time; today's teacher must assume a number of roles. They must act as a parent, (In loco parentis) for some students school is often the only place to provide a warm, safe, comfortable environment. (Ryan &Cooper, p. 397) A teacher also serves as a friend/counselor/confessor, for many students a teacher is also someone to approach for support. They also serve as a promoter of health often recognizing potential health problems - poor eyesight or hearing problems, speech defects, disease, poor hygiene, etc.
