Technology and the Education System

The effects that technology has had on education in the past few years have been many. As little as ten years ago, computers or smartphones were not a commonplace in everyone's daily lives. Now, most people carry around a ˜tiny computer' wherever they go and are able to use one device for many different tasks. Students are now able to use technology to help them with assignments or to even turn them in. In recent years, technology has become commonplace in many classrooms in order to teach and engage students. But due to the technological advances in recent years, it has also become increasingly hard for students to think creatively, build relationships with the people around them, and have great communication skills. Relying on the easy access of the Internet hinders their development into the 'grown up' world. .
One of the biggest challenges of education and the Internet going hand in hand, is that students lose the ability to think creatively on their own. "Over the past few years I've had an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with my brain, remapping the neural circuitry, reprogramming the memory. My mind isn't going-so far as I can tell-but it's changing " (Carr 731). This is Nicholas Carr's, the writer of "Is Google Making Us Stupid? ", response to how constantly using the Internet affects the way he thinks and is able to get things done in a timely manner. Students experience the same problem when it comes to their education. With the easier access they have to the Internet, it's easier to gain information in just a few seconds through a search engine rather than spending the time to get accurate and worthwhile information through more reliable means, like textbooks and other forms of books. .
Teachers are also noticing how technology is negatively impacting their students education. An article posted by the New York Times in 2012, interviewed several teachers who had experiences with the effects technology has had on their students.
