The People and Culture of India


The spices they use in their dishes tend to be, coriander, ginger, turmeric, cardamom, , cinnamon and dried hot peppers. Many different thick condiments and spreads are made, from fruit and vegetables, which include tomatoes, mint and cilantro, and far more herbs too many to mention. Many Indians are vegetarian, but for those who are not chicken and lamb is mainly used. Many different breads are used and theses can be used to eat with rather than cutlery, or they just use their hands. (Zimmermann, 2013). The ancient Indian food tradition were to eat many different animals which include tortoise and alligator. Vegetarianism entered India slowly, especially when bulls and baron cows were used as sacrifice by the Aryans. Over time concern grew for animal welfare. (Kittler,P,G).(See appendices 1).
             Traditional dress in India includes the Dhoti, worn by men, this is an unstitched piece of cloth around five yards long which is tied around the waist but also wraps around the legs. There is the Kurta that was originally worn by men but now both wear it. This is a long shirt that falls below or just above the knees. Salwar Kameez is worn by Indian women, and is highly popular in Punjab so is quite often referred to as a Punjabi suit. The one we are all reasonably familiar with is the Indian sari,worn by Indian women, a very beautiful Indian dress. The men of India wear a sherwani this is a long coat that is buttoned to the collar, and falls below the knee. Another item of clothing we're very familiar with is the turban, which is a long piece of cloth wrapped around the mans head. This has a lot of significance to the men of India. (www.culturalindia.net). (See appendices 2), The turban symbolizes holiness and purity, and early guru's demanded all followers wear them to show equality and dignity. The Sari can be in various colours all of which represent different things e.g. red represents fertility and sexuality.
