Capitalism and Communism

Another view Marx held was that once revolution had begun it would occur simultaneously in large capitalist nations throughout the world; this obviously has not yet occurred. Instead in the case of the Soviet Union, Lenin did not want to wait for the economic conditions to ripen for his revolution. Lenin created a new theory that imperialism was the highest stage of capitalism and took it one step further to say that Russia was the most important "colony" to the west. He believed that to destroy capitalism you must begin in the colonies and since he had convinced many in Russia to believe that they were a colony of the west, his revolution ensued. This revolution was however premature. Although Lenin began to implement sound communist reforms it came back to haunt him after his death when it was proved that the proper communist base had not been implemented which allowed as horrible a leader as Joseph Stalin to come into power and torment his nation. Marx believed that in a communist society everyone would work hard and everyone would get a piece of the pie, "From him according to his abilities, to him according to his needs." But this did not happen in the Soviet Union. Since Stalin was the sole party leader he controlled all means of production but he did not distribute the goods evenly. This led to widespread famine and starvation which was just one of the ways that communism had been improperly implemented in the Soviet Union. Although the Soviet Union did eventually become a super power due to reformist leaders such as Nikita Khrushchev; who were more willing to keep up with changing times, the premature implementation of communism eventually caught up with the Soviet Union's economy eventually causing it to slowly crumble, contributing to the destruction of Soviet communism. .
The only major economic power in the world today that can also call itself communist is China.
