Life

This is demonstrated by the following sentence: "The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago." The condition of the box also reflects the people's feeling towards the lottery. "The black box grew shabbier each year: by now it was no longer completely black, but splintered badly." The assortment of places the black box is stored the rest of the year also reflects the people's apprehensive view on the lottery tradition. .
Jackson's description of the box, character names, and setting reinforces the negative vantage point on traditions. Jackson appropriately uses each of these tactics to emphasize the possible immoral and ridiculous traditions in modern society. Traditions which we often carry on simply because that's how it's always been done. Even though the reader might find the conclusion barbaric, the overall point Jackson drives at certainly can not be ignored.
The significance of setting, imagery and symbolism, as well as theme in this story will be discussed so as to better understandng its meaning. The room .
in which Jane lives is very spacious, consisting of mainly a bed, which is nailed to the floor, a few large windows with bars, and walls covered in partly peeled off yellow wallpaper. In short, this room can be described as being very boring, and the reason for this is to prevent Jane from being mentally stimulated, which can lead to hallucinations or delusions. The room being upstairs and having bars around windows bring a far-off, jail-like feeling to it, making it all the more depressing for Jane. Also, the bars on the windows can be seen as the barriers that prevent Jane from escaping by suicide, just as the yellow wallpaper is the barrier that prevents the woman behind it from escaping. After Jane becomes the woman behind the wallpaper, the wallpaper represents the barriers society creates that prevent Jane from living the life she wants. As she peels the wallpaper off she tries to break down those barriers.
