And now came the reaction of the altered conditions."(p.35).
The future is a capitalist state that is divided into two societies. Furthermore, the Time Traveler sees a natural integration of capitalism and evolution in the future society. The differences between the rich and poor in his time, have led to the physical evolution of two distinct species. The Eloi are little creatures, which are lazy and useless and the Morlocks work beneath the ground on machines. The Eloi are the upper class and the Morlocks are the working class. Through the Time Machine Wells warns that mankind will come to end if capitalism continues. If class divisions continue the world will fall apart and die out. .
Social Darwinism and evolution are presented throughout the Time Machine. The idea of "natural selection" is often too frequently used among the upper class. Evolution does not lead to the "perfectibility" of any species, as is generally perceived, but to the increasing adaptability and complexity of a species. Social Darwinism ignored this idea and said the social environment was much like the natural environment. Those that succeeded in life were biologically destined to do so and to continue in their march to human perfection. On the flip side, those who failed had inferior traits and deserved to do so. Social Darwinism was a term used by the wealthy upperclassmen in the 19th century. Social Darwinism is often an excuse for the rich to justify outcasting the poor or the slums of their society. .
After the Time Traveler leaves the world of the Eloi and Morlocks, he travels to what he believes is the end of the world. Everything is gone and the sky is red. "I cannot convey the sense of abominable desolation that hung over the world. The red eastern sky, the northward blackness, the salt Dead Sea, the stony beach crawling with these foul, slow-stirring monsters, the uniform poisonous-looking green of the lichenous plants, the thin air that hurts one's lungs: all contributed to an appalling effect.
