Being consistent is important so that others can rely on us in all circumstances. We should be honest to people and fair in our dealings in order to let others trust us. But keeping all this in mind, it is a fact that we are not always able to gain ultimate trust of a person. Realizing this fact, we should accept it and respect it.
The key thing which I learned about trust in the professional relation was that I had to respect the patient's confidentiality, as it was very important to the person and the hospital that only they should know about the patient's records. Moreover, I figured that no one was ready to trust you in a completely new situation like when the patient comes to the hospital for the first time.
Another important element which brings depth and meaning to a relation is empathy. It is a very human quality, like trust it also takes time to develop. It is the most genuine feeling when it evolves naturally. Empathy gives you the ability to enter into the life of another person, to accurately perceive his/her feelings and what those feelings mean. It can only evolve in us when we are concerned about our friend or the person we are having a relation with. It provides us with more opportunities to be helpful to our friends and relatives and to show them that we care. We should always appreciate the good and share others experiences keeping in mind that they only belong to them and are important for them.
In a professional relation, like that of a doctor and a patient, one can share the experiences and emotions and being in tune with their thoughts while, sill understanding that it is their experience. We should not be sympathetic or feel sorry for them because that diverts the attention. Sympathy means sharing the person's feelings and emotions, but also sharing their needs; which makes it difficult for a professional to remain objective.
Love and caring is one of the very basic ingredients to a thriving relation.
