The French Revolution

The people of France, nearing the end of the 1700's were experiencing a lot of social and political discontent. After the events of the meeting of the Estates General in 1789, the National Assembly was formed, which was a true representation of the people, and set to make some changes. One major change was the abolishment of the Old Regime, an unfair social structure that over 97% of the French population was unhappy with. They also passed a constitution that recognized the rights of the people who as a majority until then had had practically none. Initially, they allowed for a constitutional monarchy, but that did not last long and King Louis XVI ended up being executed for treason. There were several changes in government that developed after his execution that were brought on by the revolution. Some forms of government were able to handle the financial situations better than others, but over time the economy had its ups and downs. Although some changes were for the benefit of the people, and some were not as favorable to the people, these radical changes that occurred constituted a true revolution.
The Old Regime was abolished and replaced with a series of changes of new and different forms of government that in some cases were, and in others were not, more favorable for the people. The Old Regime was the unfair social structure of France in which there were three estates. The first two estates were wealthy, specially privileged and made up the minority of the population and the third estate was extremely poor, paid all the taxes and made up the vast majority of the population. In the past meetings of the Estates-General the voting had been organized by estate, with each of the three estates meeting separately and each having one vote. The Third Estate was always outvoted, and since they were not being heard yet again in the meeting of 1789, they created the National Assembly so that they could have proper representation.
