What a Teacher should and should not know.
Teachers need to have an idea of the type of students that are coming into their classrooms but at the same time not base their entire assessment on the words of others. By this I mean that sometimes teachers talk, whether it is in the teachers lounge or through written comments. To me the most important aspect of assessing a situation is to be able to assess it through my own eyes. By listening to others speak badly about a kid or even good about them would make my assessment skills diminish and perhaps place an unfair label on a student. .
"Sometimes when I compare lists with another teacher's, the teacher might comment on a student, sibling or parents." (Airasian, pg. 33) This quote is bringing up the point of labeling a kid based on what their brothers and sisters may have done before. To me this might be the worst thing that could happen to a kid. While siblings most likely may act alike, a teacher can not have that perception already in their head. Each student needs to develop their own relationship and habits, I don't think it is beneficial to anyone to know who their sibling was or what they were like, let the teacher base their assessment on the student themselves. I seen this up front with one of my friends in high school, this business teacher we had labeled him a trouble maker based on his two brothers that she had before him, it turned out he was nothing like them at all and was one of the better students in the class but because she had this thought in the back of her head she always came off very negative towards him. One quote that I found in the book that I really liked was, "These teachers talk about a clean slate, they say in essence they would like to find out about their classroom themselves." (Airasian, pg. 33) This is how I feel exactly, each year, maybe each semester kids should be given that clean slate because that is exactly what they are, kids.
