Cinderella
Throughout time and around the world, the story of “Cinderella” is an ongoing legend. In all these versions, the theme of the story is about struggles, suffering, love, and good winning over evil. The Cinderella fairy tales also reflect the culture, social norms, and traditions of the people during the time that the stories were written. All those elements play a role in how and why the main character differs along with the suffering endured to them. The supernatural element in these stories comes from varying sources. However, the universal theme in the two stories is triumph of good over evil and how everyone has feelings. The two versions I will focus on are “Fair, Brown and Trembling,” Ireland’s version by Jeremiah Curtain and “The story of Tam and Cam,” the Cinderella tale for Vietnam. Although both versions are written during different times, the authors reflect their version around the, culture, beliefs and society during that time. In the Irish version “Fair, Brown, And Trembling” Trembling is the youngest of three girls and the most beautiful. Fair is the eldest and meanest sister. As a resu
The two stories also have similarities, such as expressing feelings of betrayal, love, jealousy and forgiveness. The universal theme in both stories is that all people, no matter their situation, have feelings and that a person who is good, kind, and loving will live happily ever after. In other words, good wins over evil. In the story “Fair, Brown, and Trembling,” the good and kind sister marries the prince and lives happily ever after; her evil sister Fair spends the next seven years living in a barrel in the sea for the evil choices she made. The same string of events happened in “Tam and Cam.” Tam marries the prince and lives happily ever after. Cam, the wicked sister, dies in boiling water. Finally, both stories offer hope to the people in Ireland and Vietnam which is another resemblance. Ireland and Vietnam are two countries where war was dominant. The fighting consisted of good winning over evil in society’s eyes. Both tales offered hope to the people of their country that good prevails over evil eventually. As an early childhood professional, I would introduce Cinderella tales in a developmentally appropriate way. I will focus on the idea that everyone has feelings, no matter who they are or where they live. I want the children to learn also that the choices we all make all have consequences. The choices we make, good, or bad, can eventually hurt other people. We would discuss the basic feelings and I would bring in pictures with faces that have different expressions on them, that represent feelings. I would ask the children to give me examples of when they might feel “sad,” “mad,” or “happy”. Next, I would focus on what the children perceive as mean and bad vs. nice and good. To expand the lesson, I could talk about the difference in cultures and people. In conclusion, the activities will emphasize first on the importance of making appropriate choices and accepting the resulting consequences for your choices. Also the activities on expressing feelings would help the children on a more concrete level. The main point in my activities is for the children to see that the choices we make affect others in many different ways. The religions and beliefs in the two stories are different.
