AIDS - Deadliest Plague in History

"AIDS is the deadliest plague in history. About 40 million people were infected by 2001; when those people die, HIV will surpass the number of people killed by the bubonic plague" (Brannon & Feist, 2010). With the changes of one's lifestyle and the advancement of medications and drug therapies, HIV positive patients have an increased survival rate through early detection. Questions will arise and can be answered with a clear understanding of HIV prevention while also normalizing this hot topic. In result, HIV positive individuals won't feel ashamed of their diagnoses and fully educating those who are HIV negative. The most important factor when discussing HIV prevention is education. To make this workshop effective, education on HIV prevention must start at an early age. A sex education program should be applied from elementary school to high school. This program would establish teachers to inform their students about sex, HIV/AIDS prevention and sexually transmitted disease preventio

Good and Evil in Lord of the Flies

"Lord of the Flies," by William Golding, is a novel about a group of English children who land on an island due to a plane crash. The boys are forced to fend for their survival. At the beginning they set civilized standards that seem to work, but eventually the kids end up breaking them. Soon clashes arise between two boys, Ralph and Jack, and one of them decides to form his own group. From that moment savagery and violence increase which over time causes two tragic deaths. Golding's main theme is that even though civilization is present, savagery is sometimes inevitable because evil is in every man. The main character, Ralph, is elected by all of the boys to be the leader of the group. Despite the fact that Jack wanted that position for power, Ralph reassures him and leaves him in charge of the group of hunters. "We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything"" (42). The boys set up civilized rules

Sex Education Reality Check

The Social Security Act, in 1996 made the abstinence-only approach primary by granting states the funds for sex education programs who assured they would follow the guidelines. The debate over which method should be used became so controversial, it seemed to have "taken over from abortion as the leading symbolic fight in the culture wars," (Malone/Rodriguez, 2). The decision was torn between a number of factors including religion, race, upbringing, region, etc. In the absence of proper sex education, young adults look to parents, school, television, and friends for information on sex. We all become familiar with our own bodies and the bodies of others around fifth grade, which sparks a sense of curiosity among all young adults. In the process of getting familiar, we start to develop questions, ideas, and feelings we cannot always control. This gets more intense with time. We all know that by the end of our fifth grade year, we take some introductory class to sex education, bu

American Political Parties

Political Parties in the United States Today the United States has two major political parties: the Democratic Party, which has evolved out of Thomas Jefferson's party formed before 1792, and the Republican Party formed in the 1854 mostly by people in the states of the North and West who wanted to prevent the expansion of slavery into new states being admitted to the union at that period. Both parties are supported by individuals and groups in all parts of the country and their members hold almost all the offices in national, state, and local governments. It is difficult to generalize about the two parties as they have no distinct ideological program, there are no membership fees, and both cover a wide spectrum of interests. Both parties are moderate and close to the political centre, but the Republicans are to the right and the Democrats to the left of centre. Both have supporters among a wide variety of Americans, and both embrace a wide range of viewpoints. There is so much varie

Life and Society in the Era of Job

Although the society followed a patriarchal system, life in the time and place of Job was similar to our society in that unexpected calamities can fall upon anyone, however righteous or wicked. Often when tests of hardship visits us, we are left wondering if we have done anything bad to be tested in such way or deserve such punishment. In our journey of self-discovery, if we find no root cause of our problems, we end up with a mystery and ask ourselves "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Job, seen as a good and upstanding person (Job 1:2), is one such man on whom a series of unfortunate calamities befalls. It is because of his faith and steadfastness that he perseveres through his trials and tribulations and in the end is granted with a bountiful reward. In the time of Job, as in most society, the status of a person was determined by their wealth and character. Job was a prime example of a person who was good, stayed away from bad deeds and was wealthy. In the society

The Student Loan Bubble

The student loan bubble is an accumulating debt problem in the United States, setting up a disaster for our national economy. The student loan hypothesis states that as more and more young adults are unable to find jobs after they graduate from college, fewer students will be able to pay back their student loans (Chaker, 2009). Although many economists reject this hypothesis and say it's not a threat to our economy, multiple universities are raising their tuition rates. This means that incoming students will need much more financial aid and student loans in the future (Chaker, 2009). Statistics consistently show that student loan debt is continuing to increase (Clark, 2011). In order to determine if this hypothesis is really a crisis or over exaggerated, we must first analyze the problem. Attending college is becoming increasingly more expensive. According to the College Board membership association, College tuition has increased 17% in two-year public universities, 54% in four-year

Compensating College Athletes

The dreams of a successful football season were dashed for Georgia fans when star wide receiver AJ Green was suspended four games by the NCAA for selling one of his game-worn jerseys for $1,000. Although he did violate an NCAA rule, Green's actions were defensible seeing that the NCAA and Georgia athletics can profit off of him, but he cannot. College football is the most profitable of the collegiate athletics, but it has become a sham as the NCAA and other associations make millions of dollars off of an amateur athlete and coaches receive six-figure salaries, yet the athlete does not have the ability to profit. Essentially, college football represents unpaid labor in that the talents of the athletes are used to generate revenue for the NCAA and universities. NCAA bylaws state that by consenting to participate in NCAA sanctioned events, student athletes forfeit all right to individual entitlement and transfer all right to their image to the university (Matzkin, 235), meaning the unive

Overcoming Life Obstacles

What are obstacles? Why are they put into our lives? An obstacle is a thing that blocks one's way or prevents and/or hinders progress. They are put into our lives as a challenge to help us grow as a person. A person's character is also exhibited as they face and overcome their own obstacles. Track season has started; my teammates and I have been preparing for our handoffs all season. One warm sunny Saturday morning in Colorado Springs, I woke and got ready for my track meet, which were a few hours away. I arrived at Garry Berry Stadium and placed my bag in the area my team was sitting in the bleachers. Preparing my mind, I filled my ears with my music to keep my mind focused prior to my events. I was competing in the long jump, 800-meter sprint medley, 4x100- meter and the open 200- meter. I was ready to put my hard work on the track and the pit. As the meet went on I had already finished the long jump and was ready to get my sprint medley team on the turf to practice our handoffs. Stretching and warm-up on th

The Role of the State in Globalization

Assignment Between retreat and continuing centrality? Critically assess the role of the state in globalization. Response Academic analysis of the impact of globalization on the state has involved controversial debates. The initiator of these debates was the hyper-globalist school, which began in the late 1960s when Kindleberger argues, "the nation state is just about through as an economic unit" (Hey, 2011: 312-313). Proponents of this view have argued that the role of the state is diminished under globalization. Further, they predict that globalization will result in the demise of the nation state. However, the opposing view argues that the state is still a viable actor in international relations and international political economy and questions the nature of globalization. This essay will assess whether the role of the state is in retreat. It will be suggested that the state remains central in handling national and international governance. It will first sort out the def

Crusoe rescues this man and kills off the savages, and the man, Friday, becomes a companion to him. The relationship that ensues between them is diverse and unbalanced; it brings out the great and lesser qualities of Robinson Crusoe and reveals his racist, colonial, white mindset typical of those times. Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead

Over the last couple of years, television has started a bigger driving force in pop culture than ever before. There are two shows that are gaining higher rating than movie or other television show of the past could have ever dreamed of. AMC's "The Walking Dead" " and HBO's "Game of Thrones,"" both draw heavily from their original source of inspiration, but they've handled their subject matter, actor's ability to assume their TV persona, and likelihood of surprising incidents quite differently. "Game of Thrones"" is set in the land of Westeros, a land with a thousand years of history. For the most part it revolves around the point of view of multiple characters throughout the books. Although the story involves dragon and multiple forms of magic it's tries to de-emphasize magic compared to other epic fantasy works. The story comes from an imaginative realm but the author sees an honest necessity to reflect the real where people die ugly deaths, even beloved characters. In the same vein,

Entrapment in The Chrysanthemums

Throughout the ages, society and the traditional representation of gender roles, have truly masked us from what is morally correct. Things have indeed progressed for the better in the sense of what a woman can stand for and produce to the world, but for the past 1000 years there has been a sense of entitlement and a role of higher importance for men and an undesirable neglect for what a women can contribute to. A bothered and isolated Elisa Allen in the story "The Chrysanthemums," finds herself subject to this phenomenon and is persistently mistreated and in a sense, unnoticed by her traditionally productive, yet dull and dismissive husband. She ultimately breaks down psychologically and shows no signs of hope or freedom from the cobweb in which she is trapped. With the factors of a misunderstanding husband, lack of sexual fulfillment, and a sense of inequality due to her gender, Elisa finds herself confined within the walls of a depressing foothill ranch on the sunless Salina

Modernization of Africa

Introduction  Modern African states have several problems ranging from corruption, to armed conflict, to stunted structural development. The effects of colonialism have been offered as a starting point for much of the analysis on African states, but the question of why African states are particularly dysfunctional needs to be examined, given the extent to which they have lagged behind other former European colonies in many aspects. In the first section, I will consider the problems with African states from the level of the state. That is, the nature of the states' inceptions and the underlying flaws may explain some of the issues that have been associated with African states today. Next I examine the development of, or lack of, civil society and the institutions which took place across the continent in the colonial era. In particular, I consider the lack of education and judicial authority and how this affected the formation of the structures which exist in the post-colonial era. Las

Professional Sports and Legalizing Steroids

Anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs (PED's) are the vitamin of choice for most professional athletes. Steroids, are taken in liquid or pill form and are only traced through urine tests. "They are proven to increase lean muscle mass, strength, and even stamina. These enhancements alone motivate players to use steroids in order to compete among their peers, even after their normal career cycle is over" (Scally). In the New York Times, Sam Robert's article about sports careers gave the statistic that, "The average major league baseball career is less than 12 years and the average football player's career is less than six years" (Roberts), which is why many players turn to steroid use. Steroids are one way to make sure that your career is longer than the norm and even more productive. Performance enhancing drugs were not always illegal in baseball. In fact, it wasn't until 1991 that Commissioner Vincent sent a memo to each team, announcing that ste

Election Integrity and Voter Identification

The ability to vote is an American citizen's fundamental right and civic duty. It is a cornerstone of our country's democratic system. In today's polarizing political climate, the issue and debate of election integrity and voter identification laws is as heated and divisive as ever. There are strong arguments by those supporting stronger ID laws for voting, as well as by opposition who believe more strict ID laws infringe on an American's right to vote. To frame this in a simpler political context, it is Republicans and these laws, while Democrats and liberals fight to soften or remove them altogether. Most liberal groups suggest or make assumptions that laws mandating an individual to produce a photo ID before they can vote is a form of discrimination intended to hinder or suppress voter turnout especially among minorities. Republicans claim such laws validate elections, as one illegal vote negates a legal vote. While both sides of the debate will be discussed and analyzed, the pur

The Life of a Penguin

I have always been interested in penguins; those adorable, tuxedo wearing, belly sliding birds. I was given my prized penguin doll that I took everywhere with me. I received penguin piggybanks, penguin stuffed animals, penguin statues, and anything else penguin that my family could find. Although the specific penguin species of these trinkets are unknown to me, each one made me love penguins more. Every time I was assigned to write an essay about my favorite animal, it was the penguin. When March of the Penguins came out in 2005 my grandma made a point in taking me when I came to visit. This documentary was about exactly as the name says, the march or migration that emperor penguins take every year. There are about 17 different species of penguin in the world all of which live in the southern part of the globe. They are not just found in Antarctica, where the majority

John Updike - Great American Author

"A narrative is like a room on whose walls a number of false doors have been painted,"" Pulitzer Prize winning John Updike mused. "While within the narrative we have many apparent choices of exit, when the author leads us to one particular door, we know it is the right one because it opens" (183). Updike life was a metaphoric house with many doors with many rooms. Some are vividly lit like the story "Rabbit, Run"" and some are dark and sad such as "Separating"." On January 28, 2009 a very talented artist passed away in Danvers, Massachusetts. He received thirty-one national awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Best Fiction in 1982 and again in 1991. He's devotion to his craft was steadfast and rigorous. It was said that he would wake up everyday and write for a few hours for six days a week. He never wrote under a pen name", he has always been know as the author John Updike, he's middle name Hoyer. Adam Gopnik from Humanities Magazine states, "Updike comes closest to meeting Virgi

Class Reading Assignment Summary

In "The Apology"," Plato claims that Socrates is the wisest man even if he doesn't believe that he is. Plato claims that, "he is not speaking of Socrates, he is only using my name by the way of illustration, as if he said, O men, is the wisest, who, like Socrates, knows that his wisdom is in truth worth nothing"" (pg. 104, p. 9). This is strength to Plato's argument because he explains why Socrates is going around spreading his knowledge. Socrates is trying to find someone who is wiser than him but he has yet to find that person. The people he has spoken to are not wiser than he is, therefore he preaches to them his findings and his beliefs on god and the world. However there are strengths in this example for his argument but there is also a weakness to it. When he starts to speak about other spiritual issues besides god this stirs up a big conflict with other people because he believes in other things besides the city of gods and that isn't good. One of the charges he is being accused of is not believing in the city of god and this is shown when he starts to question gods belief that he is the wisest. He is trying to prove god wrong by searching for someone who is wiser t

Video Games and Violent Crime

According to Anne Walling in her book, "American Family Physician," two other authors, van Eenwyk and Bensley, performed an extensive study on teenagers between 15-20 years old among the whole country, to see if video games were somehow becoming more realistic and realistic as well. They found that as the violence rose, the rates of homicide, violence, and weapon-carrying actually dropped. As they had already suggested, violent video games were simply a safe way to vent passive emotions, such as frustration and aggression. They also found some former studies of this topic. The first thing they noticed was that these studies were all kind of different. The quality, in terms of the amount of subjects, and control subject as well, was very low. Those types of experiments being done were also greatly varied. With such a poor consistency in two factors, it is actually improper to come up with any kind of conclusion. Then they decided to create a more specific violence test among college-

The Big Business of Professional Soccer

Soccer has continuously reigned as the most popular sport in the world. Globally, the one thing that each country has in common is passion for the sport. Being the most popular sport in the world however, does not necessarily mean it is the most profitable. Throughout the globe, the sport has impacted governments and economies but not because of any monetary power. Soccer's influence on a country mainly comes from the civilians' support and love for the game. A city's temperament can be solely dependent on the clubs prosperity or failure. However, soccer clubs do not thrive in the area of being a profitable franchise. From the amount of money spent on transfer fees to the lack of return clubs make on merchandise, the income of an average team is relatively low in comparison to actual businesses. Many have speculated and made claims that soccer means big business. Arguably, some of the most famous people in the world play professionally. Why should there not be a lot of money to be ma
