The Spirit of Shuar

The Shuar are an indigenous tribe living deep in the heart of the Amazon rain forest. They're renowned for being the last tribe in the Americas that has yet to be conquered. They are bred and raised to be fierce warriors and defend their title of being the last conquered. Because of development and the bringing of modern day civilization and industry, the Shuar have had to move deeper into the Amazon. Being exposed to this development has led to the lives and traditions of Shuar to change slightly, yet they still practice almost all their key traditions and always keep them close to their heart. They are a spirit minded people who have lived in balance with nature and learned from Earths three sacred "Teacher Plants"." The Shuar want to share their message of safely coexisting with nature to the countries and people currently struggling to find and maintain that balance. I chose this book not only due to the lacking Anthropology section Bookman's had to offer, but because on face val

Impairment of IFRS and US GAAP

Which method of accounting for impairments of tangible, operating assets is best: U.S. or IFRS? The US financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International accounting Standards Board (IASB) are more similar than different in most transactions. However, when it comes to impairment of tangible and operating assets, I believe IFRS have a better method of impairment than IFRS. By the end of this paper, I will be able to show you the overview impairment principles, the advantage and disadvantage for both US and IFRS method, and the reason why US GAAP is better. According to the US GAAP, if impairment indicator exists, there are two-step approaches to calculate the impairment. First step is called a recoverability test. Under the recoverability test, an impairment loss occurs only when the sum of long-

He was a major figure in the American Enlightenment Period, and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. The eclectic and active life of Ben Franklin earned him the titles both of the model American citizen and one of the founding fathers of the United States. During the 1730's, books were very scarce and expensive. Most Americans had limited access to books because they cannot afford the cost of its purchase even though at that time, there were no public libraries. The Library of Philadelphia was founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin as a subscription library supported by its shareholders. In 1731, Benjamin Franklin convinced members of the Junto, his "society of mutual improvement," to pool their resources and purchases a collection of books. Research for My Next Business Venture

Abstract In 2012, I considered myself completely retired. Recently, I decided to pursue a new business venture, one that would keep me active in my community while accomplishing the satisfaction of being an Entrepreneur. This research on my next business venture examines the nonprofit sector; how organizations operate at an accounting profit but are still considered a not-for-profit organization and philanthropy. This paper compares the effectiveness of an independent Capital Campaign Consultant with a Director of Development. The examination of internal or external fundraising managers gives a perspective for my decision to launch an enterprise that will collaborate with nonprofit organizations for fundraising or to strengthen its ability to succeed in the fundraising process, gaining operating capital as well as grant proposal writing. Hard Times by Charles Dickens

The Industrial Revolution, a period of time from 1760 until about 1840, marked a turning point in history as it was a period where almost every part of the daily life was influenced. This time period is most notably characterized by the change from hand production to machines. It was during this time that Capitalism first took flight and when coupled with other factors such as outdated labor laws and distinctly stratified socioeconomic classes, it put unparalleled stress on the lives of the working class. Charles Dickens', Hard Times, focused overwhelmingly on the rise of industrialist utilitarian thought and the overall effect on society. The Industrial Revolution is further characterized and also portrayed by Dickens as a period of dehumanization, victimization, and alienation. Dickens, along with many theorists of the time, believed that industrialization led to dehumanization or a

Demographic Transitions

Demographic transition is a model that explains population changes over time. It works by showing how fertility and mortality rates vary in developing societies. (Editorial Board, 2013) In 1929, American demographer Warren Thompson's interpretations started the demographic transition model. It has helped to outline the changes in fertility, mortality, as well as the birth and death rate changes in developing societies. (Editorial Board, 2013) While the model helps to generalization the population changes for groups it is not always an accurate picture for individuals. Four Phases of Demographic Transition Within demographic transition there are four different phases. These phases in order are; 1. Phase I – pre-modern (primitive stability) 2. Phase II – urbanizing/industrializing (epidemiologic transition) 3. Phase III - Mature industrial (fertility transition) 4. Phase IV – Post Industrial (modern stability) Phase I of the demographic transition has a stable populat

Jean Paul Sartre and the Framework of Freedom

The existentialist Jean Paul Sartre's framework of freedom is describes the "confined woman"" conveyed by Iris Marion Young as being radically free. Iris Marion Young would also agree that Sartre's description of freedom would still hold, but since culture is inherently biased against the idea of an equal physically capable woman, women are not radically free, as Sartre would argue. However, Sartre's reasoning of freedom and Iris Marion Young's reasoning of a woman's lack of confidence stemming from doubt of her physical capacity, are both fundamentally convincing and compatible with each other. Jean Paul Sartre's thesis that humans are radically free starts of by his argument that existence precedes essence. Sartre argues that objects that like the pots crafted by an artisan have an "essence ", they are bounded by the nature of the essence, and thus are not free. Similarly, if there was a God or a creator that gave us our essence we

Alfred Hitchcock and The 39 Steps

In the film "The 39 Steps," Hannay, the protagonist, goes on the run from the police, who suspect him of committing murder. On his way to the Scottish Highlands, he chose a remote crofter's cottage to be his temporary hiding place. As Hannay worries about the exposure of his identity on the newspaper, he constantly distracts the crofter's wife but the wife seems to find him attractive, while the crofter despises the intimacy between them. In the scene where these three characters pray before dinner, they all have some serious matters in their minds and the couple begins to be suspicious of Hannay because of the paper. In this highly character-driven scene with limited setting, elements of mise-en-scene are presented by various suitable point-of-view shots to showcase each character's emotion and personality. The deliberate placements of characters and the subtle performance given by the three actors highlight the potential tension without creating dramatic conflict, which gives this s

The Democratic Peace Treaty

The Democratic peace theory refers to the apprehension democratic nations have regarding waging war against other nations. The goal of this literature review is to explain the thoughts of researchers in regards to their debate. Current researchers of the democratic peace theory have varying views which include, democracies fight aristocratic and nondemocratic governments, those who wage war due to the belief that they hold the power to create peace, and fear of an economic downfall. Democracies Fight Aristocratic and Nondemocratic Governments While studies agree militant democracies are likely to start wars with aristocratic governments and non-democratic, Seung-Wang Choi states that "Israel, the United States, India, and the United Kingdom tend to initiate wars with aristocracies to preserve international law, to terminate massive breaches of human rights, or to democratize resistant dictatorship " (261). Choi's studies are relevant since they help explain the concepts of democracie

Behavior Types in the Prison Environment

The common goal of any prison facility is to ensure the safety of the public, correctional staff, and offenders by maintaining an organized and disciplined system. A typical correctional team at night consists of a Captain, four Lieutenants, and about twenty-seven Sergeants. Each member of the team has their own responsibilities and tasks, but must work as a team to accomplish all assigned tasks that are given. It is imperative to work as a team, even if some team members don't get along with others, because working in a prison can lead to dangerous and life threatening situations. A job at a prison facility is not made for everyone. One person's decision can effect and possibly harm the lives of other team members. It's important to know the different types of people we work with, and how we can divide them based on their personality behaviors. The first type of behavior is to assure that they never do anything wrong and they aren't the cause of the outcome. The "entitled" believes that they are allowed superior treatment. They tend to be narcissistic, believing that they are owed something no matter what they do. Thi

Harry Truman's Excellent Adventure: The True Story of a Great American Road Trip

Harry Truman is to be admired for many things; for example, when he left the White House, he moved back into the same house he had lived in when he and Bess were first married: "But when Harry Truman left the White House in 1953, he returned to the same rambling, slightly ramshackle, two-and-a-half-story Victorian that he and Bess had lived in since their marriage thirty-four years earlier" (pg 19). Mr. Truman wanted to take a road trip to Philadelphia for a convention but he did not own a car because, as president, there was never a need for one. When word got out that Mr. Truman was looking for one, an offer for a new Chrysler, Harry settled for the 1953 New Yorker, and although it was offered for free, the off the record price was believed to be $1.00. An interesting fact in all of this was Truman did not have the luxury of a Presidential Pension that they have today, all he had was his Army pension of $111.96 per month which meant everything would have to be well budgeted. Frye v. Missouri and the Rights of Due Process

The case of Galin E. Frye v. State of Missouri, 311 S.W. 3d 350, raises the issue of whether or not the defendant has been denied his rights of due process wherein the legal assistance provided to him failed to communicate a generous plea bargain offered by the prosecution. Frye was sentenced to three years in prison after a fair trial because his counsel had made unprofessional mistakes that led to him pleading guilty to a harsher sentence than he could have received. The defendant should not be held liable for making an uneducated guilty plea after his attorney, Michael Coles, failed to perform his duties as the appointed defense. The outcome resulted from a lack of legal assistance; therefore Mr. Frye would have served a lighter sentence had he been fully entitled to his 6th amendment right to the assistance of an effective counsel. The Sixth Amendment right to counsel is necessary to ensure the right to a fair trial. The basic structure of a fair trial is mainly composed of the m

The Promise of the New South

In "The Promise of the New South: Life After Reconstruction," by Edward L. Ayers, there is an optimistic outlook on the southern American states after the Reconstruction period. Ayers talks about many different problems that the southerners face such as economics, politics, religion, alliances, and the overall lifestyle of the South. Even though Reconstruction hit the Southerners hard; Ayers argues that the political and social life in the South within the initial years following the end of Reconstruction are fluid, and that the conservative Democrats gradually came to dominate the area. Ayers demonstrates, just like the title of the book, the South holds a serious promise of success within the United States even through the struggle transitioning to a new world. Ayers captures the history of the South in

Macbeth and the Death of King Duncan

Betrayal, secrets and cold blooded murder are all things that can be found in Shakespeare's theatrical masterpiece, "Macbeth." This is a well-known tragedy of a man so driven by greed that he would kill not only the King, but also his good friend. It is easy to see that it was Macbeth who killed King Duncan but was there a stronger force than just his own greed that drew the dagger? Lady Macbeth is responsible for the death of King Duncan and therefore more evil than Macbeth. The first time that Lady Macbeth enters the play she is speaking to herself and trying to conjure evil spirits. She has just received a letter from Macbeth telling her of how he had spoken to the weird sisters and told her that they had prophesied that he would be king. They had also prophesied that he would become Thane of Cawdor which had already come true. Macbeth also tells her the King would be their guest that night. As soon as she learns about the Kings visit her first thought is of killing him. Lady Macbeth speaks of how the prophecy must be fulfilled at all costs. Macbeth is

Gym Class - The Solution to Childhood Obesity

Relay races, dodgeball, crab walks, kickball, and about a hundred different versions of tag; this is what I lived for when I was ten years old. I would stare at the hands moving along the clock, seconds seemed like hours, hours felt like days, and I felt like I was going to grow old before it was time. Only eight minutes and 32 seconds and I would be racing towards the gymnasium for P.E. Everyone participated, it didn't matter if you were not athletic or if you were uncoordinated, it was a chance for every child to get some exercise and create lasting choices in regards to their health. Fast forward fifteen years and the healthy patterns that I learned from my grade school gym classes are still an important part of my life. However children in public schools around the country are no longer getting the same opportunities. Where I participated in gym almost every day, children now may it once every two weeks. Gym classes are being taken out of our public education system, which will l

John Trusly - Slaves and the New World

During the 1600 and 1700's, the New World slave trade was gaining momentum, as hundreds of thousands of slaves were shipped to the Americas via the transatlantic slave trade route. Approximately 7.7 million Africans were transported to the New World between 1492 and 1820 (Foner 133). Slavery in America in the late 17th century was a direct result of labor shortage and economic development in the English colonies. Many newsletters during that time address issues relating to slavery. But, in order to understand the terms and concepts used in articles relating to slavery and societies attitudes towards slaves written over 300 years ago, the 21st century reader must also review the historical context of the time period found in modern history books. In a 1734 "New York Weekly" article by John Trusly, the lives and hardships of Bermudian slaves is described in vivid detail. Trusly writes, "Last year, there were 120 Bermudians freighted out of this port; that one with another, their f

Philosophies of Parent/Child Relationships

The philosophy of parenting determines children's development and the parent-child relationship. Three popular parenting programs promoted on the internet today include: attachment parenting, homeschooling, and tiger parenting. These different approaches show how parents' behavior affects children. The theoretical foundation of each style provides accurate evidence of effectiveness. The analysis of each of three programs provides details of different options and offers wide perspective of parenting methods. The attachment parenting style strives to promptly respond to their child's needs and be sensitive and emotionally available for their child at all times. This approach focuses on enhancing parents' effects on children's development. The belief is that strong attachment to the parent helps the child become a more secure, empathic, peaceful human being. The use of this program forms a strong emotional bond for parent-child relationship (McGolerick). The attachment theory states tha

Leading Men of the Battle at Gettysburg

The battle at Gettysburg was a game changing military endeavor between the Northern and Southern states during the Civil War in 1863. The ambitious campaign saw many casualties by each side and showed the great determination felt by the men who fought to the end for their cause. A campaign bringing to light the many principles of war utilized and from which generations following have learned many great lessons. There were many causes of the Civil War whereby brother fought against brother, neighbor against neighbor, but a principal cause was the institution of slavery. America had grown and expanded in technology, trade, commerce and many other ways, but the mentality of some Americans regarding slavery had begun to change in opposition to that barbaric custom. This transformation occurred within the Northern part of the U.S., but not so much in the South where people's livelihood depended on slavery for its agricultural needs. Southern politicians defended slavery knowing that they

Barbarians: A Cultural Outlook

Throughout the text, "Of Cannibals,"" by Michel de Montaigne, he suggests that the cannibals of South America take part in acts that are considered barbaric, but we must take into consideration the culture that considers these acts barbaric. Barbaric (adj) meaning cruel or extremely brutal and uncivilized or unsophisticated when compared to high developed citizens; may seem like the appropriate word to use when talking about "cannibals however," I'd argue along with Montaigne that "we may then call these people barbarous, in respect to the rules of reason: but not in respect to ourselves, who in all sorts of barbarity exceed them. Although these cannibals may commit acts that may qualify them as barbaric, the Europeans commit acts that would qualify them as barbaric or even more barbaric as well. When living in
