Common Grounds of Religion and Sex

1. Religion and Sex Religion plays a powerful role in regulating sexuality and influencing how we view experience sex. Identify a topic related to religion and sex (examples include but are not limited to: celibacy, virginity, sex as sinful, Adam and Eve, procreation, birth control, abortion, etc.). Then, using the two required references, explain the origin of the specific topic you have chosen, its impact on male and female sexuality, how the topic has changed over time, and its status today. One of the most debated topics about sexuality and religion today aside from abortion is virginity. Especially in college it has been a topic that I have talked about and discussed with people on numerous occasions. In my opinion the topic of virginity is one that relates to that of females much more than that of males. In todays society it is looked down upon and shunned when a male is a virgin, especially past the age of 18. At the age of eighteen a male is expected or already have had sex wi

Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Lord Byron's Reputation

Assignment Discuss the cultural reception of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Cantos 1-2 (1812) and how this contributed to and/or reflected Byron's celebrity and reputation. Response Two years and twelve days after departing England for his continental tour, Lord Byron landed at Sheerness on 14 July 1811 bearing the manuscript which Jerome J. McGann would later describe as 'one of the most important works in modern Western literature'. Faced with massive debts, the death of close friends and apprehensive about reengaging a readership after his reckless attack on the British literary community in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers: A Satire (1809), the twenty-three year old Byron announced 'he would appear no more as an author. However, by examining contemporary newspapers, letters and reviews of the period, it can be seen that Byron consistently did appear as an author, and far from waking up and finding himself unexpectedly famous, 'Brand' Byron was well underway before

Immanuel Kant and the Metaphysics of Morality

1. Why do we need a metaphysics of morals? Kant argues that a metaphysics of morals is necessary for humans to correctly carry out the "right" or moral action in every situation, since they are often affected by numerous inclinations and desires at once. Without a concrete metaphysics of morals, judgments of morality will be subject to corruption and perversion. 2. In the beginning of section one, Kant considers several qualities that Hume has called praiseworthy -- wit, judgment, courage, resolution, perseverance, moderation -- and deems them ambiguous at best, certainly not worthy of esteem by themselves. Why? Can you think of instances in which the above qualities have proven evil? In Kant's view, qualities such as courage, resolution, and perseverance are not worthy of esteem by themselves because they can be harmful and used for evil if the individual that possesses these qualities also possesses a will, or character, that is not good. For example, someone could have the qual

The Birth of American Commercialization

The 1920's was a time marked by social change in America. Although many different elements played a role in bringing about this change, the commercialization of popular culture was at the heart. The commercialization of popular culture dramatically changed society by bringing many Americans together while dividing others. First, I will show you that the commercialization of popular culture changed society by bringing Americans together. Probably, the biggest commercialization that took place was that of music. In the 1920's, music became accessible to Americans from one coast to the other. This allowed for an extraordinary change in American society that hadn't been seen in years. The change I am referring to was the boom in popularity that music from various subgroups experienced. Music like Jazz from new Orleans or hillbilly music from the south shot up in popularity and was listened to by people all across the country. Prior to this change, subgroups all had their own type of music

The Cask of Amontillado and A Rose for Emily

"The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe's and William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" are compelling murder stories, full of dynamic characters, vivid details, and compelling points of view. These two stories encompass the elements of plot, character, setting and point of view among others. Although the elements of the central theme of murder are different, these stories share other elements that make these stories unique. In the short story "The Cask of Amontillado," Edgar Allan Poe sets up a basic plot structure which is the perfect example of a flashback. In the text, this strategy of plot structure is defined by "informing the reader of events that happened before the opening scene of a work." This is identified in "The cask of Amontillado" during the opening when Poe illustrates the anger and malice Montresor has for Fortunato. The overall effect this story has on the reader is one of suspense. "Brick by brick," the story is developed making you

The Old Testament and the Bigger Picture

The Bible is composed of 66 books, written by countless authors, across several centuries, and in different countries. It remains a national best seller and has been published in several languages with numerous translations. Yet despite all of those statistics, most people still do not what the Bible is really about. Most people have their favorite story or verse, but they may fail to understand the Bible as a whole. In God's Big Picture, Vaughan Roberts tries to educate Christians and non-Christians about the God's grand design for His people through His Kingdom. Instead of focusing on one particular passage or verse, Roberts does a comprehensive overview of the Bible illustrating God's Kingdom and how all He wants is His people to dwell in His Kingdom with him under His rule. Roberts begins by breaking the Bible into eight sections that all pertain to God's Kingdom and how he attempted to achieve it, but at every turn man's sin ruined the beauty that God created. However, despite al

Sex Education - Educating Our Future

While it may seem that teaching sex education reveals a heated debate from previous generations, the actuality is that for many parents and communities, it remains a highly controversial issue. If our generation fails to educate the younger generation, our prosperity will be left to pay the price. Opponents to sex education feel that the courses themselves authorize this movement. First and foremost, sex education in public schools deems to be a duty of the American school system. With the growing rate of sexually transmitted diseases [STDs], healthy sexual behaviors and teen pregnancies in today's society, sex education is more important than ever. Teens get most of their important information about sex from, "parents, peers and the media"" (Brown, 2008). Brown (2008) reports alarming statistics regarding teens and STDs, stating that "roughly seventy-five per cent of sexually transmitted infections occur in young people". Our youth needs to be knowledgeable and have a better und

Breaking Down Knowledge Sharing Barriers

Time and time again, APQC's research in knowledge management (KM) has proven that a knowledge-sharing culture leads to increased productivity, improved cycle times for business processes, and innovation. The ongoing role of KM is to develop an environment where people freely create, share, and use information and knowledge; work together toward a common purpose; and are supported and rewarded for doing so. While this may seem like an easy feat, it is not. It is imperative to remember that implementing a KM program is not an automatic trigger to transform an organization's culture. Yet, many KM leaders immediately begin their efforts by trying to "change the culture. " It is at this point that APQC suggests you stop, collaborate, and listen. It is vital to appreciate the culture of your organization and what drives people's behaviors before trying to implement any type of enterprise-wide change. Your level of cultural understanding could determine the success (or failure) of the propos

The Dark Side of the Gilded Age

All that was gilded was not golden during the Gilded Age. While railroad magnates promised progress, western settlement, and jobs for immigrants, the laying of westbound tracks, changed the face of the country. This progressive movement began decimating native Indian populations, polluting the land, and creating an ever increasing divide between rich and poor. I support this idea because what was made to help people caused many problems among them "the rich got richer while the poor got poorer"" (Are we Living 1). There were many jobs in the cities which made people move from rural areas to the cities causing overpopulation. Native Americans were accustomed to a nomadic type of lifestyle consisting of hunters and gatherers who relied on natural resources for survival. It was this that kept the Native American culture alive. The commencement of the gilded era however ran many Native Americans out of what they considered to be home. Industrialization caused them hardship because they were ran out of their land so that a railroad system can be

A Refelction of King Philip's War

Imagine living in a place where your religious viewpoints aren't tolerated. Imagine being so desperate for religious freedom that you want to leave your homeland and cross the ocean to a place where you have little knowledge about. A place inhabited with a race of people with a completely different culture. This is what the Puritans or Separatists had to face in the 17th century. They had no choice but to leave. I completely agree with their decision. Leaving was their only option. By leaving England, the Pilgrims gave their children the opportunity to believe in their faith without religious persecution. In the 17th century, the bloodiest conflict occurred between the Native Americans and Pilgrims; the King Philip's War. Many Native Americans and Pilgrims died, including women and children. King Philip's war was named after a Pokanoket leader (not after an Englishman) who was from the Pokanoket tribe. During King Philip's war, there were many acts of violence. For example, according

The Diaries of Adam and Eve by Mark Twain

The story of Adam and Eve is a religious one which is often told through the lens of traditional Judaism and Christianity. In his book The Diaries of Adam and Eve, Mark Twain takes spin on the story of Adam and Eve. Taking a humorous approach on the many attempts of Adam and Eve communicating with one another, Mark Twain subsequently sets the tone for male and female conversations. Mark Twain's reorganized biblical interpretations of the activities of the first man and woman form a entertaining, regenerate, and shockingly provoking set of journal entries by Adam and Eve themselves. Twains language combines both well-known elements of the Bible's original story and concepts and references to the 1800's. The dualism present in this book expresses both symbolism and syntax and the battle of the sexes which Adam and Eve are expressed through Twains diction, by giving Adam and Eve personalities Twain offered a new version of the Biblical events According to H.P. Grice, a successful conve

The East Africa Food Crisis

The selected articles focus on the ideas of food shortage and economics, and the impact of the East-African food crisis. A severe drought has struck the arid parts of East Africa, threatening hundreds of communities in the region. Over 12 million people are at risk and the number is only growing. Parts of Somalia have already been declared as famines, the first famine (anywhere in the world) since 1984, and attention around the world is only slowly increasing. Other areas are also badly affected, such as Somaliland and parts of central Ethiopia. Parts of Uganda and Djibouti have also been affected by the drought. Officially declared by the UN as the worst food crisis of the 21st century so far, the East Africa food crisis has resulted in the driest years in Africa since 1950. This drought has huge effects and implications on not only Africa, but the world. Livestock is dying by the thousands, and the harvest predictions for this year are predicted to be 50% of the normal. Legislation of the Farm Bill

In September of 2013, The House and Senate Committee's looked to "re-up" the soon expiring Farm Bill which had previously been enacted in 2008. The Farm Bill was a sweeping legislation that encompassed numerous corporate interests and was backed by powerful lobbies. As a result, the Farm Bill became a hotly contested piece of lawmaking as it touched on almost all aspects of food production and distribution within international and domestic arenas. The Farm Bill provokes debate in many areas that we have been studying this spring. By analyzing the newly enacted Farm Bill, I will address several important topics including transnationalism, hegemony, GMO's, labeling, pesticides, health and ethics. Critiquing the Farm Bill will allow me to identify issues within the inter-domestic capitalist system which creates a stratified class system and privileges while and impoverishing the majority. First some background. The Farm Bill is voted on and enacted every 5 years. The 2013 versi

The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick

The short story, "The Shawl," written by Cynthia Ozick, retells World War II by providing a very vivid image of a Concentration Camp in Nazi Germany. As you read, you can see that Ozick does a great job of portraying the tough times Jews experienced during the Holocaust. In the first paragraph, we meet the main characters, Rosa, Stella, and Magda as they attempt to endure the fears of life in the Nazi Concentration Camp. Rosa and Stella, Rosa's niece, are marching in a line to the camp with Rosa's daughter, Magda, wrapped in a shawl (a well knitted fabric worn by women over the shoulders, head or wrapped around a baby) and hidden from the Nazis. At the end, Stella takes Magda's shawl, and Nazis kill Magda by throwing her into an electric fence. Throughout the story, Cynthia Ozick used symbolism like life and death, protection, and other things to make us understand the true thoughts and feelings of each character which brings out the true meanings in the story. A symbol is a sign or

Overtraining Young Athletes

With recent developments in science and technology, the level of competitive sports is continuously improving. In pursuit of the "faster, higher, stronger" Olympic Games' goal, more athletes begin training at earlier ages with higher intensity training. There are many athletes on the world competitions' podiums who are 13 or 14 years old, and because the age when they take part in the competitions is low, the age when they start training is significantly lower. Most athletes in sports like gymnastics, ice-skating, and swimming start training when they are only 5 or 6 years old and spend their whole childhood and adolescence on training. With the constant increase of exercise training intensity and training volume, it is unlikely that more high-intensity training has a positive effect on young athletes' growth and development. More young children than ever are pushing their physical and emotional limits in pursuit of athletic excellence and are competing more fiercely at younger ages.

Advertisement - Dolce and Gabbana's Light Blue

Dolce & Gabbana, a brand-name company known for luxurious and expensive products, launched a thirty second video advertisement for their perfume, "Light Blue," in 2001 targeting young adult to middle-aged men and women. On the surface, their campaign portrays a passionate afternoon in the beautiful blue waters of the Mediterranean. However, a deeper deconstruction of the ad reveals a play on dominant gender stereotypes, gender identities, and cultural misconceptions that advertisers take advantage of to see their products sell. The ad opens with "Parlami D'amore Mariu"" by Achille Togliani playing softly in the background. This 1930's Italian tune alludes to Dolce & Gabbana's heritage while also giving the ad a romantic atmosphere; "a selling incentive for the perfume." Also, it entreats the ad with a sophisticated and exotic feel, especially to an English speaking audience. The volume of the music and intensity of the lyrics crescendos as the ad progresses to its most climatic p

Short Quiz on African Politics

Part I: Short Answer Questions Provide short answers, in not more than five lines each, to fifteen (15) of the following questions: 1. Decolonization Decolonization was achieved through a combination of armed struggle, negotiation, and UN brokered deals. An example of independence won through violence was the Algerian war. An example of UN brokered decolonization would be the ex-German & Italian colonies as well as the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Also an example of negotiation would be the independence of the Sudan in 1956 and Ghana in 1957. 2. The Economic Legacy of Colonialism in Brief The introduction and expansion of capitalist production (cash economy) in agriculture, mining and industry. Another legacy is the industrialization of Africa. Another legacy is the provision of an infrastructure of roads, railways, harbors and telephone and telegraph lines in African countries. Another legacy is that women were able to have more access to education. Also another economic legacy is the urb

The Emancipation Proclamaiton

The Emancipation Proclamation was a critical part of President Lincoln's term in office. Although it is one of the most important documents in United States history, it is also, quite possibly, the most misunderstood. Its text explains key terms surrounding the Civil War, the importance of slavery to the war effort on both sides, Lincoln's efforts to regain the support of the rebellious states, the role of African American soldiers in the civil war, and America's place in the world wide progression to end slavery. Lincoln was determined to mark his name into history when signing the Emancipation Proclamation. While it stated that all slaves in the rebellion states were freed, the document was not accepted into the Confederacy, and did not instantly free any slaves at all. The Proclamation's focal point was based on territory still owned by the Confederacy, and it made it much harder for the entire slave population to be completely freed. The Proclamation also supported the recruitment

Women in Shakespeare's Hamlet

In Shakespeare's theatrical masterpiece, "Hamlet," manipulation and stimulation encircles the two leading ladies. As the only female characters in the play, Gertrude and Ophelia provide the only insight as to how women are depicted in Elsinore's society. Shakespeare's Elsinore is patriarchal on many levels; the men continuously use women to their degrading advantage. As King of Denmark, Claudius not only has power over the state, but also over Gertrude. On a smaller scale, Polonius has full authority over his daughter, Ophelia. Hamlet uses and mistreats both women, for they are not entirely in control of their environment. They are prone to the decisions that men make for them. Gertrude and Ophelia are forced to play in these limited roles by overshadowing them with surrounding prominent male figures, giving them no chance for redemption. Giving men more power than women has run not only throughout Hamlet, but also in the threads of history. Quickly after Laertes takes his leave to F

NCAA Athletes Deserve Payment

The world of sports revolves around money. Professional athletes make millions of dollars each season and produce even more for the franchise in which they play for. In most scenarios, these athletes attend college before becoming professionals. To protect the wholeness of the game, it is against the rules for any NCAA athlete to accept money from an agent. Sadly, many succumb to the temptation of free money. An uncontrolled agent base, financial need, and lack of supervision or education all play a part in college athletes accepting money or other benefits from prospecting agents. Agents often offer student athletes money, or bribes, to those who will inevitably earn the most money in hopes of persuading them to sign with them when they come out of college and have the freedom to do so. By accepting money from an agent, these young athletes potentially enter a moral agreement to choose that agent as their own when they enter the professional chapter of their career. The agents are

Poetry - Romantic, Sexual, and Religious Love

In many occasions during the 1600's, which was the time where many Cavalier poets flourished, it was important for someone to gain the love of a person or being. Those people would do whatever was necessary of them in order for them to gain this love. The love could have been religious, where a person devotes themselves to a higher being, sexual, where the love between two people is simply physical, or romantic, where the love between two people is both physical and emotional. Throughout many of their poems, the Cavalier poets explained what people believed was necessary of them to give up in order to attain this love. The Cavalier poets, John Donne, Sir John Suckling, Andrew Marvell, and Robert Suckling, claim that people must sacrifice some part of themselves so that they could experience love, whether it be romantic, sexual, or religious love. As described in "Holy Sonnet 14" by John Donne, a person must give up some part of themselves so that they could experience reli

Short Stories and Poems - Similarities and Differences

For a reader who may notice the similarities between short stories and poetry, may not that easily recognize the differences between the two. For example, take two pieces of literature from the same author, Edgar Allen Poe. When analyzing "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart", some differences that may be noticed would be the length of each piece, the rhythm and rhyme at which the work is written, and the different language used to detail events that may or may not occur. After a reader reads both pieces of work, the first and most obvious difference is the length. Now this may not always be the case but for the most part, short stories are generally longer than poems. "The Tell-Tale Heart" is written in paragraphs and doesn't follow a specific pattern or format. "The Raven", on the other hand does exactly this. It is not written in paragraphs, but verses instead and only contains four to five lines

Terminal Illness and Assisted Suicide

A patient in the hospital is dying of stomach cancer; he cannot keep an appetite, vomits blood every day, and only wishes for his suffering to end. Does he have his right to choose his death? Does the government have the right to deny him thus? The purpose of the United States government is to protect the natural-born rights of human beings. Many times over, people have had their rights denied protection from the government. Specifically, terminally ill patients suffer because they are denied the right to die. Since 1906 adult terminally ill patients legally fought for their right to die on their own terms, and so far the United States has seen only three states legalize assisted suicide to such patients. If one of the "natural rights " is life, then who is to say when a person can give up life? In the United States it should be legal for terminal patients to acquire assisted suicide through a physician because it is the patients' natural right to die when they see fit. Government is
