Mister Pip and Great Expectations

"Mister Pip," by Lloyd Jones, is a novel about a young girl named Matilda who lives surrounded by war on the isolated island of Bougainville. Matilda, along with all of the inhabitants of Bougainville, anxiously watch the escalating conflict between the rebels otherwise known as "rambos" and the government forces known as the "redskins." Matilda attends school where Mr. Watts, the only white man in Bougainville, reads them the novel "Great Expectations," by Charles Dickens which she uses as an escape from her life on the island. Conditions on the island become increasingly violent and eventually lead to Matilda's mother and Mr. Watts's death. She first reacts to their deaths very calmly but when the weight of what has happened starts to take a toll on her well being, Matilda uses Pip, a character in "Great Expectations," to find her will to live. Jones uses the point of view to display how constant exposure affects people and the psychological damage it can inflict on the survivors.

Starbucks and Corporate Social Responsibility

Introduction Thomas Donaldson, Professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics and of Philosophy, defines corporate social responsibility as a concern for the well being of non-owners and a commitment to integrity, fairness and respect for people in communities. Studies have shown that a sound ethical reputation helps companies hire and retain better employees who are loyal to the company; customers and suppliers are also drawn to companies with strong ethical reputations (Donaldson, 2005). Companies who do the right thing, because it is the right thing, gain the most benefit financially (Donaldson, 2005). It is no surprise to find that Ethisphere's list of the World's Most Ethical Companies is full of powerful and successful companies all over the world (2013). Does the company have a stated CSR policy? Starbucks was named one of the World's Most Ethical Companies in 2012 (Ethisphere, 2013). In a nation where corporate social responsibility is becoming the expectation of consumers,

Apples - Chemical Reactions and Browning

Why do apples go brown? Apples contain an enzyme called polyphenol oxidase. When an apple is cut into, the polyphenol oxidase reacts with the oxygen in the air producing a browning effect. Everything created by nature has some sort of way of protecting itself from a threat that causes harm to it. An apple protects itself from fungi and other microorganism by producing a peel around itself and the enzyme. When the peel of the apple is penetrated, the apple uses the enzyme as a second layer of defense to protect itself from further damage. Browning of apples has a huge burden on the farmers and the consumers. Many people purchase apples based on the quality of an apple based on its outward appearance. A Canadian company called Okanagan Specialty Fruits, found a way to genetically engineer apples which do not turn brown. These apples are known Arctic Apples. Okanagan Specialty Fruits was founded in 1996 by Neil Carter. It is a biotechnology company that focuses on using modern day scienc

Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Definition A clear definition of sexual harassment defines the stance of the company, provides feeling and experiences concerning sexual harassment and draws the line on questionable behavior. A policy on harassment also helps the employees decipher their observations on the job. This combined with training would help Elora and Company craft a zero tolerance sexual harassment climate within the organization. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an agency that enforces laws regarding discrimination in employment, defines sexual harassment as: "Unwanted sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment when submission to such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment or academic advancement or submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions or academic decisions affecting such indiv

Enemy of The People - A Letter from Katherine Stockmann

Salutations Peter, It is I, Katherine. After yesterday night's events, I think it is best for me to communicate on behalf of Thomas for the elapsed development of the Baths issue. As you and the whole town know after all that had happened, my husband believes deeply in his findings and that the town's main source of revenue, the Baths have been infected by the grave pollution from Malledal. We both know that Thomas is a man of integrity and honesty. I being his mate, it is my duty to stand by him for his inquiries; however, this time I'm an not as cemented to believe that his decisions are in the best interest for our family. My family is true and dear in my heart, I would do anything to guarantee their wellbeing and shall not stand for this elation to be jeopardized. With you being a man of the people, I do hope you can appreciate that. Thomas has been wronged and he would never see past the good of the town other than for his medical obligation. You must be able to understand where

Crime Fiction Theater - The Mystery of Roger Mullaney

"The Mystery of Roger Mullaney," is an effective illustration of theatrical crime fiction. This play uses many of the conventions of the genre. The playwright, Carl Caulfield, has written a mysterious thriller for audiences to unravel, packed full of red herrings, puzzling clues and shadowy characters. Clever stage directions and music also provide extra information about how the play should be staged in relation to the characters and props. "The Mystery of Roger Mullaney" certainly conforms to the crime fiction convention of the detective or sleuth character. Timothy Benham and Imogen Mills form a partnership in the play as the detectives who investigate and solve the case. This is clarified by Imogen's word as she answers the phone saying "Banham and Mills, private investigators." It is further shown through Timothy's impersonation of Philip Marlowe, a typical detective in a crime fiction classic "The Big Sleep." An example of this is when Timothy says "Sometimes yo

Cry, the Beloved Country - Aspects of Fear

The movie, "Cry, The Beloved Country," was directed by Darrell Roodt, and is based on the popular book by Alan Paton. The film is set in the year 1946 in South Africa, and details the story of Reverend Stephen Kumalo, who lived in the small village of Ndotsheni. His son, Absalom, lives in the city of Johannesburg. Stephen travels to Johannesburg to find his son and his lost sister. The film details many different aspects of fear, namely fear of the unknown, fear of the future and fear of anger. The director portrays this fear through the use of facial expression, gesture/posture and tone of voice. The director demonstrates a fear of the unknown through gesture/posture. An example of this fear is when Stephen Kumalo is afraid to open the letter. When Stephen doesn't open it, it is easy to tell something is wrong. When he looks at it a second time, he sighs, showing he is afraid. He goes to open it but then slams it back down on the table, with a great big frown on his foreh

Hamlet - Impulsive and Indecisive

In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," the task of avenging his late father is bestowed upon Hamlet after learning his uncle is the one who pours poison in King Hamlet's ear. Hamlet is somewhat cautious with the information and develops a plan that he hopes will deceive Claudius into showing signs of guilt for killing his own brother. Hamlet keeps his cautious and uncertain attitude up until the play he puts on for Claudius and Gertrude, at which point he begins to act rashly without thinking of the consequences to follow. Hamlet's quest for revenge begins as a noble cause, but the change in his approach of decision-making leads to the death of countless characters. After hearing the Ghost's claims about how Claudius murdered his father, Hamlet decides to step back and gather some more information before taking action. He says, "Be thou a spirit of health or goblin damn'd, bring with thee airs from heaven or blasts from hell, be thy intents wicked or charitable, thou comest in questionable shape" (I, iv). He believes that the Ghost may be trying to fool him, which some

Concussion Prevention in the National Football League (NFL)

During the 2012 season in the National Football League (N.F.L.) there was a new league high of 8.4 concussions per week of games played (Leon). This is basically a concussion in every other game. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way a person's brain works. Concussions are caused by a blow to the head, but can also occur when the head or upper body is violently shaken. Some symptoms of concussions include headaches, lack of concentration, memory loss, judgment, and a loss of balance or coordination (Mayo). These are only some of the short term effects; concussions can lead to many brain disorders leaving many players in critical condition with many expensive medical bills. These expensive medical bills result in many players spending their life savings on these bills. Almost 4,000 players are suffering from the ongoing effects of concussions; and many are suing the N.F.L. to pay for their medical expenses (Fenno). Football is associated with many risks that can

Alternate Ending - The Chocolate War

The Chocolate War - An Alternate Ending Today was it. Jerry was supposed to start his chocolate sales today, according to the vigils assignment. He sat while Brother Leon took the chocolate roll call, waiting, wondering "do I dare disturb the universe?" Thinking he realized that he hasn't seen any of the vigils all day. He still didn't see them, even now. Where would they be right now? "Jerry," called Brother Leon." He hesitated for a moment before slowly replying, "No."" He didn't know what he had said until after he said it. He dared to disturb the universe. The day went on as usual, except for the vigils, who were mysteriously missing. At football practice, there were quite a few absences, all from the vigils. The practice seemed to go twice as good a usual without the vigils there. When he got home, he turned on the TV. And the news was on. The news reporter was reporting on s

Indian Immigration and the United Arabs Emirates

Introduction Human movement has a significant role in making our world one dynamic society. When human movement occurs, human integration and disintegration are interwoven together. Culture starts adapting different codes. New economies arise with different innovation of technologies. Thus, social institutions struggle to overcome the economic and social challenges within globalized society. It is important to know what migration means before getting into the case-study analysis. According to United Nations migration and migrants are, "The geographic or spatial mobility of the population between one geographical unit and another involving a permanent change of residence. A migrant is a person who has changed his usual place of residence from one migration defining area to another at least once during the migration interval" (www.un.org p. 2). In other words, humans have experienced migration for ages. And, that is why human movement is also referred as a global phenomenon. D

Notes on Hamlet - Acts IV and V

Hamlet - Act IV 1. Based on the short initial scene of Act IV, is it unclear if Gertrude truly believes Hamlet is mad or not. What it is clear is that the Queen seems to be more allied to her King than her own son. After her encounter with Hamlet which ends with Polonius' death, Gertrude does not hesitate to tell King Claudius what her son has done, yet she does keep her word by not telling him that Hamlet has just merely been faking madness. With her actions, the Queen has sealed Hamlets faith with the King who decides to send his to England. It should be mentioned that Gertrude still has no proof that Claudius is a killer and thus, if it is for her own benefit or not, she does not feel the need to protect Hamlet from him. On the other, the Queen could have interpreted her son's rash actions against her, sighting of the ghost, and murder of Polonius as Hamlet being insane. 2. Ophelia's madness is caused by her father's murder and his quick burial. When speaking to the Queen, Ophelia s

School counselors have the skill set to assist with personal problems, academic concerns, testing, social development and career planning and college preparation to name a few. The purpose of this paper is to take a look at the role of the school counselor in relation to college preparation. How involved are counselors in this critical stage of development in the high school years and what exactly do they do to help students move to the next level. Background on the Need of School C

Short Story - Confidence & Cupcakes

"Well aren't you a sight for sore eyes? You look so grown up! I feel like I haven't seen you in a million years!" It had barely been a year, but I laughed anyway. I rushed over, threw my arms around her and embraced her with the biggest hug I could. It was a reunion a few months in the making that finally happened after both of our schedules miraculously cleared at the same time. She's one of my favorite people, one of the teachers who encouraged me and ultimately evoked my passion for writing, so it felt wonderful to see her. But at the same time, it felt strange to be able to refer to her by her first name, Megan, instead of Ms. Harrington. When we decided to meet, we settled on "Cupcake," a local café in Minneapolis. We both ordered- a key lime cupcake and a latte for me, a regular coffee and a triple chocolate cupcake for her, a choice that doesn't surprise me. A self-proclaimed "chocoholic," I can recall almost always seeing her with some kind of chocolate during my yea

Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder

It is not known how UK citizens are sufferers of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Some research suggest that it is as prevalent as one in five people and others have said that it is about one in every 20 people (NICE,2009). Talking therapies are found to be especially effective in the treatment of BPD (Royal College of Psychiatrists, 2010). Some medications such as antipsychotics, in small doses, have also been found to be effective treatments. This can be seen as quite a controversial choice. The NICE guidelines recommend that talking therapies rather than medication are used as treatments and state that psychotropic medication should only be used in short term crisis or only with those who have dual-diagnosis with other mental health conditions. Borderline Personality Disorder The term "borderline personality" was first coined by Adolph Stern in 1938. He described BPD as borderline because it did not fit into one of two categories but rather, bordered on other cond

A World of Water and Not a Drop to Drink

Water is one of the most precious resources that we have, yet regardless of its scarcity, it continues to be mismanaged. Water is more precious than oil despite the fact that our planet's surface is made of 70% of the precious liquid; 97 percent that water is ocean salt water and not fit for human consumption. Fresh water is essential for life of most organisms, including people and the livestock we raise as a food source. In less than 100 years the world population has tripled while fresh water resources have dwindled. Currently approximately one-third of the world's population is suffering from water scarcity. Around the world there is growing discord over the availability of fresh water that have led to conflict. The privatization of water has been one solution tried in for the solution to the shortage. In her article "The Race to Buy Up the World's Water," Jeneen Interlandi discusses the problem of the ever growing global water shortage and how privatization might impact

To Kill a Mockingbird - The Finch Family

Getting to know a character in a book is a lot like getting to know a person in real life. In real life, the details come in gradually, slowly forming a character portrait of that person. I might begin with finding out where the person is from, what their family is like and seeing how they relate to others. Each new detail is like a clue and it takes awhile to get a bigger picture. Atticus Finch is a complicated character in "To Kill A Mockingbird." As I read the book, his character slowly began to make sense in my mind as the author, Harper Lee, gives us clues in small doses. Atticus comes from a family of Maycomb County, Alabama landholders who were mainly cotton farmers. He breaks with tradition and goes to Montgomery to "read law."" After being admitted to the bar, he goes back to Maycomb to work as a lawyer. We find out, right away, that Atticus is a man who lives simply and who is willing to sacrifice for his family - he puts his brother through medical school and has a simple o

Marketing is about understanding the customer's needs and wants to build a relationship with a customer and then maintain the relationship through implementation and control of a marketing plan. The exchange between the consumer and the business is value. The marketing strategy and marketing mix involve the activities to create customer value and foster the relationship between buyer and seller. The marketing mix is made up of four main elements; product, price, place, and promotion. This paper will discuss the importance of the four elements of marketing mix and how Target Corporation has used these tactics in the development of their organization. Marketing Mix Elements Product A good marketing strategy must have the decision on what product they are going to offer to the consumer. The product in the marketing mix strategy is the combination of goods and services a company will offer to the customer (Armstrong & Jotler, 2011). Elements of the product include design, features, brand

The Effective Use of Setting in The Great Gatsby

"The Great Gatsby," by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is filled with widely differentiated settings that are characteristic of the time the novel was set in. The settings in this novel are essential to revealing the characters and their behavior. Fitzgerald divides the world of the characters in the novel into three major settings: East Egg/West Egg, Valley of Ashes and New York City. Each of these settings, both reflects and determines the value of people who live and/or work there. Just like the settings, the people in this novel are widely differentiated along with their attitudes and characteristics. East Egg is the home of the wealthy, prestigious, old money families. The people who live in East Egg feel no need to show off their money because the prestigious names they carry do that for them. Daisy and Tom Buchanan are the only people in this novel that live here and they are certainly proud to do so. Their home which is well beyond the stature of a middle class home is quite classy yet not nearly as flashy as their neighbors across the Manhasset Bay. Next is West Egg, the home of people wealthier than the East Egg members, but don't maintain nearly the amount of prestige, where Nic

Guilt and Ambition in Shakespeare's Macbeth

Macbeth goes through many obstacles to get to the throne. In Shakespeare's tragedy, "Macbeth," ambition leads to the eventual fall of Macbeth. His growing ambition changes him from a laudable Scottish general to a pernicious usurper. Guilt gets the best of him. And since Macbeth is so hungry for power, he is willing to do anything. So ultimately, ambition is the true reason for downfall and tragedy in "Macbeth." Macbeth wasn't always the avaricious person that he now is. He is said to be "the sergeant, who like a good and hardy soldier Hail, brave friend!" (Act I Scene ii Lines 4-6). Macbeth became the Thane of Cawdor by the order of King Duncan. When Lady Macbeth heard of this news she was indifferent. Lady Macbeth wants more. She has high ambitions for Macbeth and she triggers her husband's lust for the throne. Lady Macbeth convinces Macbeth into killing King Duncan by harassing him with his weaknesses. Without her, Macbeth wouldn't have killed Duncan so Lady Macbeth was more

" Previously Roderigo was telling Iago to quit if he did not like his position but Iago replies with "I follow [Othello] to serve my turn upon him." Iago is playing with Othello and gaining his trust to achieve what he wants and his is only going to get what he wants with his duplicitous actions.
