Risk Perception and Decision Making Strategies

The question, "how do people perceive risks?"," can be answered if we look closely into some of the decision-making heuristics and biases involved in risk perception. Heuristics and biases play a significant role one's perception and assessment of risks. Risks are often perceived with the same heuristics used to make decisions and can often misguide people in terms of judging the risk criteria of a given situation. However, heuristics and biases can also aid in risk assessment under particular circumstances. According to Paul Slovic article that was published in 1987 regarding risk perception, people's' evaluations of risks are largely influenced by cultural and social factors that contribute towards certain biases. Slavic's experiment required people to focus on assessing risks associated with certain activities and technologies. An article that summarizes Slavic's study, "How Do We Perceive Risks: Slovic Landmark Analysis," states: "Slovic masterfully summarizes the key qualitative c

Violent and Nonviolent Protests

Nonviolence is a very effective form of protest because people can get the rights and authority that they fight for from the hostile class, government or country without sanguinary wars. Nonviolence is a philosophy and strategy for social change that rejects the use of violence. In history, there are several successful times during the American Revolution that show this form of revolt is absolutely efficacious. The non-violent protests are effective because it either allows the protesters greater control of their message, and even if met with violent suppress from government, it still lowers the authority of the state. Prior to the 1775 colonists, who were angry with British authorities, implemented four actions to rebel without using violence; smuggling, protests, boycotting, and the Non Importation Agreements. Colonists did what they could with what they had in an attempt to make the British regret their decisions. The colonists often had issues with it's mother country, however this first really came into play after the French and Indian War. The British soldiers treated the American militi

Overview of the Ending of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

The ending of Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness," is one of its most significant parts of the book. It defines the entire novel and its morals and messages in which it is trying to convey and allows the audience to develop our own personal understanding of the ending ourselves from what we perceive of the plot. We have defined the ending of the novel from when Marlow first sees Kurtz carried by "a group of men bearing an improvised stretcher in their midst". The ending highlights the main events of the novel where Marlow finds Kurtz and discovers many things about him that makes him such a well-respected man among the Company and by the "savages"." We are introduced to a society plagued with the thoughts and beliefs of imperialism as a good thing, and a way of colonising the savages where the black people were always kept unnamed and dehumanised, defined as "savages prisoners and criminals"." In the ending of "Heart of Darkness," Kurtz is described as a figure of "greatness"

Shinto and the Human Condition

The human condition in the shinto religion states that we are good, and evil stems from one's contact with external things that disrupt an individual's spirituality. The interesting concept of shinto is the belief in Kami's, another word for spirit. Kami's live in everything and Kami's gave birth to all that is being, including humans. The concept of human sin is replaced with the concept of pollution. The idea is that pollution to the soul can occur through contact with things that threaten life such as blood or disease. One must wash away pollution through act of purification to keep pure and natural. Pollution is accepted as an unavoidable thing but this suffering is not come about for a reason like many other religions believe. Suffering is not a punishment of human behavior but a natural element that is part of the human experience (Hamilton 1990). Shinto focuses on life, it focuses on the present the here and now. It does not want us to fixate on our death because its believed that this constant focus and fear can become such an attachment one will not be able to make the most of their present life. Because each individual is derived from Kami, birth and death c

The Best Laid Plans by Terry Fallis

In many works of literature, there are multiple themes, both forthcoming and subtle. Often, these themes, by the end of the story, come together to create one central message. In "The Best Laid Plans," by Terry Fallis, political problems and personal identity crises are prominently featured as the main characters struggle to overcome political turmoil in small-town Ontario and Ottawa. There are three important and interconnected themes within Terry Fallis' novel "The Best Laid Plans," include cynicism towards the political landscape, the loss of personal integrity, and how even the "best laid plans " can and often do go awry. The first major theme in this satirical novel is the cynicism towards Canadian politics. In this novel, cynicism within and towards the democratic system is prevalent. Daniel Addison, the Liberal campaign manager in Cumberland "Prescott, describes what occurs when this attitude reaches its breaking point: "I've always thought that a democracy works best when

Thoughts of the Misfit in A Good Man is Hard to Find

Question What did the Misfit mean when he stated, "She would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life?" Response The statement seems to be ironic coming from a person that has committed multiple murders and deemed a menace to society. The possibility that a person capable of such demonic acts as murder, to seek the goodness in his victim could be deemed a last redemption to save his own soul. "A Good Man is Hard to Find,"" is a story of a family planning a trip to Florida for vacation. There is not much soulful depth to the family. The behavior displayed to each other is disrespectful, manipulating, and thoughtless. The grandmother is a bit too garrulous, without much thought. She would rather use manipulation to get what she wants rather than be truthful. She is very opinionated and critical of other people's actions and lacks the ability to be insightful of her own. Bailey the grandmother's son, seems

African-Americans and Their Rise to Freedom

African-American history plays an important role in American history not only because the Civil Rights Movement, but because of the strength and courage of those African-Americans who struggled to live a good, fair life in America. African-Americans have been present in this country since the early 1600's, and have been making history since. We as students in America have studied American history all throughout school, and took one Month out of the year to studied African-American history. Of course we learn some things about the important people and events in African-American history, but some of the most important things remain in the shadows. When African-American's came to America in hopes of having a better and easier way of life, they were not expecting to deal with the hardships that they went though. The following are a couple events that took place in different locations fo

The Progression of Liberalism

The predominant concepts of liberalism swept throughout Europe and America during the 18th Century. It was popular in many segments of society, yet was also seen as a great threat to the existing order. The ideas of liberalism were especially popular amongst American colonists. The success of the Revolution had furnished Americans with the opportunity to execute their political ideals as expressed in their idea of a new kind of government structure which associated with the freedom - the American liberal state. The American liberal state was different from previous classical and Christian state. During the colonial era, the Christian state emphasized the faith in God. Jonathan Boucher, an Anglican clergyman, represented for the ideals and values of the Christian states. In his view, government was the product of God, the power of government was given by God. Furthermore, Boucher believed that religion and states had to become a part of under God's hand. It saw the state's purpose as

Jean Piaget and the Theory of Cognitive Development

According to Jean Piaget (1896-1890), "The principle goal of education in the schools should be creating men and women who are capable of doing new things, not simply repeating what other generations have done" (Brainyquote, 2014). Jean Piaget, born in Switzerland on August 9, 1996, worked at the Binet Institute (1920'), where he incorporated French questions on English intelligence tests (McLeod, 2009). According to McLeod (2009), the difference in answers between children and adults aroused Piaget's curiosity. Finally, in 1936, Piaget developed a systematic study of cognitive development. In addition, Piaget's contributions to cognition and learning include: "theory of cognitive child development, detailed observational studies of cognition in children, and a series of simple, but ingenious tests to reveal different cognitive abilities" (McLeod, 2009). In Piaget's theory of cognitive development, he was interested in how children think through development. The process

College Students - No Longer Giving It Our Best

"C's get degree!" - The voice of college students everywhere "C's get degrees!" This is how most college students think. They don't take college and studying seriously. Students need to get more motivation and focus on their education. There are so many things that can distract students from doing their best. I am even guilty of some of these reasons. Today's college students are not serious-minded when it comes to academics. A lot of college students don't take their studies seriously. These students typically procrastinate on their assignments and studying for their classes. Not studying and doing homework leads to not doing well on tests, and ultimately not doing very well in the class overall. If students don't pass or do well in the class, they may have to retake the class and pay more money and time to do better (assuming they don't procrastinate the second time). For example, a friend of mine procrastinated on her studying and homework assignments in her Spanish class. She procrastinated so much that she only ha

Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville

Almost one hundred and fifty years since it was first published, Herman Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener"" remains one of the most elusive short stories in all of American literature. What is the reason for Bartleby's strange behavior in the story? This is the question that plagues the story's narrator, and it has plagued the readers of "Bartleby the Scrivener,"" as well. While many intriguing hypotheses have been offered over the years, no single interpretation dominates critical opinion or seems to fully explain the author's intention. Indeed, part of "Bartleby's" enduring appeal" comes from its well-crafted ambiguity and denial of easy interpretation. Such an enigmatic story by one of America's greatest writers has proved an irresistible challenge to scholars in numerous fields, including literature, history, philosophy, psychology, and religion. These various approaches to "Bartleby " have deepened our understanding of the issues in the story, even if they have not solved the ri

The Presence of Christ in Eucharistic Miracles

Before Christ's ascension, He promised His followers He would be with His people until the end of time. As a sign of His covenant, He instituted the Eucharist. He remains offering Himself up for us through the celebration of the Holy Mass.   By consuming the Eucharist, the Church is not only united to Christ but also participating in the blessed trinity. The Holy Eucharist, also known as one of the fascinating mysteries of the Catholic faith, "is the sum and summary of our faith" for the Eucharist is composed of the Church and Christ himself" (CCC 1327). Christ instituted the Eucharist as a "memorial of his death and resurrection" in order to leave a pledge of his love" (CCC 1337). The Catholic Church instructs that as the words of consecration are spoken, the bread and wine transform into the true body and blood of Christ through the act of Transubstantiation.     The teaching of transubstantiation, the doctrine which states that the bread and wine are transformed into the true bo

Out of Power - Smartphones and Battery Packs

The invention of the USB battery pack benefits people who have one or more smartphones, especially when people spend the majority of their day outside or away from a charging source. The product is compact and in a small shape that it is not an inconvenience to take out of a handbag or backpack. However, sometimes people forget whether it has enough power when the time comes to use it. Before carrying the USB battery pack, it is important to make sure it will provide enough power for the amount of time you want to use it. Otherwise, it will not be worth carrying it. I learned this lesson the hard way when the USB battery pack didn't work and misfortunes befell me. I had come to Seattle to study for three months. I remember that was the last week of the fall term. One of my friends, Alice, said she would go to her home country after two weeks. This news saddened us. Many memories suddenly came into my brain at that time. We had discussed assignments together, we had shared our lunch each other, we hung out every weekend, and we had shared enjoyable time together. I came back to the earth and stopped sentimentalizin

Factors Which Impact Exchange Rates

Question What are some of the major factors that lead to fluctuating exchange rates? What steps can a government take to minimize the fluctuations in its exchange rate? There could be numerous factors that can lead to fluctuating exchange rates, but firstly it is important to define exchange rate. Exchange rate can be defined as the value of one currency for the purpose of conversion to another. For example, suppose country "A" is Canada and country "B" is Japan. Then the exchange rate is the number of Japanese Yen per Canadian dollar or, alternatively, the number of yen that can be bought with one Canadian dollar. There may be many factors that can cause fluctuations in exchange rates but we will discuss the major factors below. Response Economic Factors Inflation In general, a country that has lower level of inflation exhibits a higher currency value as the purchasing power of the currency increases compare to other currencies. During the last part of the twentieth century, the co

Class Speech - To Kill a Mockingbird

Good morning my fellow classmates. My name is Alison ___________, and today, I'm going to talk about the literary classic, "To Kill A Mockingbird," by Harper Lee. The main character in the book, Atticus Finch, plays the role of father, teacher and friend to his young children, Scout and Jem. Atticus is a wise man, committed to justice and equality, with a unique, yet effective parenting style. He catches every opportunity in daily life to pass his values to Jem and Scout. He even encourages them to call him Atticus so that they can interact on terms as equal as possible. Throughout Jem and Scout's childhood, Atticus works to develop their respective consciences. After Scout meets Boo Radley, Scout understands the sentence: You never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them, which was once said by Atticus. Another example is when Atticus takes Tom Robinson's case, he explains the reason to Scout "If I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in

Keeping the Masses Under Control in the Ancient Roman Empire

Plan of Investigation The Ancient Roman Empire, regardless of social status, took their revelry and entertainment very seriously. As it is today, fun and amusement was a good way for the men and women of Rome to relax and unwind after a long, hard day. It was highly encouraged and also promoted by the government as a way to prevent people from protesting or coming to a realization of their hardships. The research will assess the effectiveness of this method by Roman rulers as a policy aimed at keeping people under control. First of all, it will be necessary to compare and contrast the different ways of entertaining the people according to social classes, as well as how they spend their leisure time. The objective of this assessment is to provide evidence in a way that it can be determined to what extent entertainment was indeed a true policy applied by government in order to keep people busy during the reign of Emperor Julius Caesar. In order to do it, some main sources and documents h

An Overview of Ancient Roman Bathhouses

Bathing was the most important leisure activity in Ancient Rome during the late-Republic. It was part of the daily regimen for men of all classes and many women as well. Today's society classifies bathing as a very private activity conducted in the home, however bathing in Rome was a communal activity. While the extremely wealthy Romans could afford bathing facilities in their homes, bathing most commonly occurred in public facilities called Thermae. These large baths were owned by the state and often covered several city blocks. Republican bathhouses often had separate bathing facilities for men and women, but by the 1st century AD mixed bathing was common. There were 170 baths in Rome during the reign of Augustus and by 300 AD that number had increased to over 900. Small bathing places held about 300 people and the larger baths held up to 1500 people or more. The Roman baths were often built where hot or mineral springs were found. Fees to access these baths were quite reasonable, wi

Broken Heart Syndrome - A Reaction to Emotional Stress

Broken Heart Syndrome is a temporary heart condition brought on by stressful situations. It is caused by the heart's reaction to a surge in stress hormones. Making a part of the heart to temporarily enlarge and doesn't pump correctly, while the remainder of the heart continues to function normally or with even more forceful contractions. The condition was originally called takotsubo cardiomyopathy. This was first identified by Japanese researchers in the early 1990's. They discovered in x-ray images that the left ventricle affected takes the shape of a vase-like pot that is used in Japan to trap octopuses. The first major studies in the United States were not until 2005. It was discover that more than 90 percent are post-menopausal women, possibly because lower levels of the hormone estrogen make the heart cells in some women more vulnerable to an adrenaline rush. There are many names for the condition such as, stress cardiomyopathy, stress-induced cardiomyopathy, and apical ballooning syndrome. Causes The exact cause of broken heart syndrome

Speech on Coastal Erosion Management

Hello, my name is Michael Patti and what I had to do for my assessment was evaluate the sustainability of current coastal management practices along the beaches of North Cronulla. I did this by visiting and collecting primary data such as photos and illustrations at three different areas along Cronulla, which were North Cronulla beach, Elouera beach, and Wanda beach, and by visiting websites. The answers to this question are vital knowledge when it comes to devising coastal management strategies, as the strategies simply wouldn't work if you didn't know the answers. I broke the question down into 5 smaller questions so I could work out the best way to manage the coast. The first part of the question was to identify the natural processes occurring along the beaches. These natural processes are: Erosion Erosion is the wearing away of land and the removal of beach or sand dune sediments by wave action, wave currents and tidal currents. Transportation Transportation is the movement

Aristotle, Chaucer and Hegel - On Tragedy

In his book, "The Poetics," Aristotle expresses some of his thoughts about the merging of literature with tragedy.  Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude. Every Tragedy, therefore, must have six parts namely, Plot, Characters, Diction, Thought, Spectacle and Melody. Tragedy is the "imitation of an action" (mimesis) according to "the law of probability or necessity." Aristotle indicates that tragedy "shows" rather than "tells." Tragedy arouses the feelings of pity and fear. Aristotle was a great admirer of Sophocles'  'King Oedipus'. He considered it as the perfect tragedy. Plot is the most important feature of tragedy. Aristotle defines plot as "the arrangement of the incidents." Tragedies which have a tightly construct

Rhetorical Analysis- Letter from a Birmingham Jail

The open letter, "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," by Martin Luther King Jr., was written to his ministers in a response to their criticism about his actions in Birmingham. He wrote it in April of 1963 when segregation was at its peak in the South. The increased violence, and social injustice caused unnecessary grief and despair among people, which based on his observations could lead to further insurgence and chaos among the people. Mr. King emphasized the need for change, acceptance, and understanding of black people, rather sooner than later, as the status quo no longer was able to address and solve the socioeconomic and the humane problems arising among people with different colors and various administrative or legislative branches. The author effectively used arguments based on values, character, and reasons to supports his ideas and actions. Mr. King took ownership by synchronizing rhetorical strategies like stating his title and experience, defining his course of action
