From Sugar Cane to Hershey BarsRaised in rural Pennsylvania, Milton S. Hershey became one of America's wealthiest individuals and a successful entrepreneur. He started his journey on a four-year apprenticeship to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, discovering the art of making chocolate. In 1876 Hershey attempted to start his own candy business in Philadelphia. After six years of diligent labor, his business failed. After failing he moved to Denver, "finding work with a confectioner who taught him how to make caramels from real milk".[Hershey] With his newly learned skills he began another business in New York City. This second business also failed. Yet he returned to Lancaster and tried again with the caramel business, being successful. Shortly after opening his Lancaster caramel Business he was employing 1,400 people and shipping across the United States and Europe. But the Hershey's chocolate company started coming together in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was there |

Edgar Allan Poe and the Black CatEdgar Allan Poe victoriously achieved the goal of creating the image of complete and utter insanity in his dark, twisted tale "The Black Cat. " Poe's first person narrative quickly establishes ambiguity about the story and the preceding events the narrator described. The narrator is the main character in this story, he is the center, the focus. We do not learn about him firsthand, rather, we learn about him by what he has penned to us. We receive the details that happened from a nostalgic flashback that he has written on paper before his death. He experiences a deterioration from normality to delirium. Throughout this narrative, the narrator's character changes in attribute due to his vulnerability to alcohol which drives his perverseness, his behavior towards his animals, and his masked guilt from murdering his wife. Hogsheads of Gin, or of Rum, constitute the chief furniture of his apartment which is presented to shine light on his alcoholism and is the direct causation to why h |

College Students and Security GuardsEver wonder if you are really protected when you are in college? We as college students should not only depend on security to keep us then we must take precaution about the people we surround ourselves with and be aware of our surroundings at all. I live on campus and I always ask myself what do security guards do, what are the qualifications, and how do security guards react to certain situations. All jobs are different in todays world. For example you have to have a high school diploma just to work in restaurants, but what about the other jobs that require you to have a college degree, and some type of experience. For instance when coming on to campus there is a guard shack where someone is there to see who comes in and off the campus. One day my mom came to pick me and take to the store and when came back there was no one in the guard shack and it was kind of suspicious to me. It has been a few times where there has been no one in the guard shack. I asked one of the security guard |

Grace Prep Varsity VolleyballThe Grace Prep varsity volleyball girls are primed to repeat their former success this season with their 11-0 record. After moving down to a division 3A school, the team has undergone numerous changes. The team continues to grow each year, since winning the state championship title in 2012 with only nine girls. Now the team boasts players with a seasoned coach, Sandy Kelm, who is coaching here for her twenty-first year. Despite the growing team size, we only have two teams this year, junior varsity and varsity, because GPA has moved down to a 3A TAPPS rank system. Most of our competitors do not have more than two teams, so we have foregone our junior varsity A and B teams and opted for only one JV team. The coaches were required to make difficult decisions as twenty-four girls fought for spots on the t |

Attention Deficit Disorder - Diagnosis and TreatmentAttention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a disorder most often diagnosed in young children who suffer from inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Wait a moment, that describes most young children, doesn't it? It would be a challenge to find any young child who can sit still and pay attention for long periods of time, who aren't hyper or impulsive. If those symptoms seem to fit so many children, why are so many children taking so many pills to calm the symptoms of childhood? "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood brain disorders and can continue through adolescence and into adulthood" (National Institute of Mental Health). With ADHD being the most common disorder in children, should they have their systems filled with potentially dangerous medication? Despite the fact that Ritalin, Adderall, Strattera and other ADD/ADHD medications work for treating some symptoms of the disorder, parents and teachers should not overly medicate th |

Ethical Theories of Plato, Kant, and MillThe three philosophers, Plato, Kant, and Mill, have very contrastive theories of ethics that they follow. First, the ethical theory of Plato, which is a virtue-based eudaemonistic conception of ethics, is a very high aim of both moral thought and action. In this ethical theory, the soul is not attached to the pleasures of the body. With this being said, Plato's primary concern was to develop a way to create the greatest happiness to both the community as a whole and the individual. Plato believed that the key to happiness is to live a just life. This goes hand in hand with his ethical theory dependent on ones virtues and morals. Second, Kant's theory of ethics is one that prohibits certain courses of action. His ethical theory is an example of deontological moral theory. The deontological moral theory is "the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their consequences but on whether they fulfill our duty" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Financial Behemoth - McDonald'sIn 1940, Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a barbeque restaurant that helped them realize that most of the profit they got came from hamburgers so they set up a new self-serve restaurant with an assembly line and named it "McDonalds." They then started to open more restaurants in new locations in Arizona and California. Ray Kroc, a man who sold milkshake machines, wanted McDonalds to start a franchise across the country. He was so committed to the idea that he decided to do it himself. In the 1960's McDonalds grew sustainably due to the campaign of the Golden Arches, followed by the sale of the billionth hamburger and the introduction of the clown, Ronald McDonald as the company mascot. Soon in 1968, the Big Mac was introduced. The growth continued into the 70's as sales reached 3 billion. Quickly after, McDonalds introduced fast food breakfast with the Egg McMuffin. In 1974, Kroc acted on his idea of giving something back and created the Ronald McDonald House which provide |

Genetic Manipulation - Good Intentions, Slow ProgressGenetic manipulation is a field of good intentions and slow progress. It is done in hope of making better and improved lives for everyone through changing genetic structure. These practices have been questioned however by those that morally think that only God should have the control over someone's destiny or that one should control his own destiny. The two groups look to the government for help regarding this matter, and as a response; it maintains neutrality to ensure the two groups that they will be free to continue doing as they do freely. The side for gene manipulation is based majorly from the people who believed in its scientific prowess. They see it as a way to correct the "defects" in people; their cure to all illnesses and handicaps. All to be perfect. It's a drive that many have but |

Into the Dangerous Mind of a Serial KillerA serial killer is someone who murders three or more people during separate events with a "cool off" cycle in between. Serial killers go through a cycle in which they kill, once they have killed, they feel a temporary relief until the next cycle arises. Psychologists believe that serial killers may have experienced some type of abuse as children; neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, or some other type of maltreatment. There is usually some type of motivation that accompanies the murder, it could vary from obtaining money, thrill experience, or a sense of power. There are many parts of the brain that could be responsible for triggering this kind of action. Psychologists have researched many different parts of the brain and the associations, but have not been able to identify the exact cause. Many believe that it could be injury to the brain from an accident, being born tha |

Analysis of A Modest ProposalSummary "A Modest Proposal" is a satirical essay written by Jonathan Swift to mock and criticize the degradation of Ireland's society during a period of economic decline. In the essay, Swift proposes a solution to the current problems of starvation and poverty in Ireland. Swift argues, through economic reasoning and self-righteous moral, that the malnourished children of Ireland be fed to the country's wealthy landlords. Swift argues that, in doing so, Ireland will be able to combat its problems of overpopulation and unemployment, thereby decreasing poverty and starvation in the country. Swift offers statistical data throughout his essay to further support the effectiveness of his proposal, providing the audience with specific detail about the number of children to be sold, their weight and price, and projected consumption patterns. Analysis During the late seventeenth century, Ireland was placed into a state of economic and social decline. Struck by an increase in poverty |

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar - Evil RhetoricWhat does it mean to be evil? Some might say it means to be morally wrong, bad, immoral, or wicked- most of these statements are true. The act of evil is usually caused in order for selfish gain or to get what is wanted. There is many ways to get what is wanted, however an effective strategy is rhetorical appeals. Although it may not be intended, persuasion can be established in a vicious manner. Shakespeare's characters for example, often used rhetorical appeals in order to achieve a purpose or task they wanted complete. But do Shakespeare's characters use rhetoric for wrong doings in the play of Julius Caesar? Yes, the characters in the play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare use rhetorical appeals in order to accomplish evil acts by using ad hominem, tradition, and bandwagon. Many readers of the play agree that the character Mark Antony's only intentions were helping the civilians of Rome become more aware of the council's cruel act. His character appears to be a |

Buddhism in East Asian SocitiesBuddhism in East Asian society had a profound effect on not only shaping each individual culture, but unifying the overwhelming population. Along with broadening their current perspectives on life, Buddhism brought completely new cultural innovations to these emerging societies. Buddhism was believed to be first introduced to China in the first century by traders from the west who traveled via the silk road. Over time China adapted this belief into their own culture by blending it with their native beliefs, producing a distinct version of Chinese Buddhism. As Buddhism began to spread from China, it caused a domino effect of cultural diffusion throughout East Asia passing along other significant ideas such as other religions, writing, and calendric. The successful dissemination of Buddhism throughout East Asia can be contributed to impeccable timing and geographic relativity. Whether the culture was at a time of turmoil and separation as China and Korea, or simply a young evolving soc |

The Fall of John ProctorThe Crucible, a very eccentric drama, is based on the death dwelling minds and lies of people in the town of Salem. The drama happens during the pre-American era. That alone shows that the court systems and the federal government did not exist, but rather each town has their own court; based off of their own ruling. In Arthur Miller's drama, The Crucible, the tragic hero, John Proctor, suffers at the hand of the Puritan theocracy because of the lies and selfish behaviors in Salem; however he redeems himself at the end of the drama. Selfish Behaviors of some characters (Parris, Abigail, and Danforth), cause more harm to John and others, while trying to protect their own reputation. Reverend Parris stated that witchcraft was not the cause of his daughter's sickness, because he feared that he would lose his reputation. He is only worried about himself, and eventually causes John to suffer. This is shown when he was talking to Thomas Putnam about the girls' actions in the woods, "In m |

World History and ReligionsSeveral religions have different and distinctive stories explaining how man, society, and parts of their religions were formed; yet all of them together suggest that there was a sole person or group that directly played a role in this creation encompassing food, animals, and the geography. Whether it is through sacrifice or great authority, the Aryans and Mayans saw food and water as genealogies of some type of earthly object. In the Rg Veda, composed by the Aryans, it expresses all about Purusha; a man, whatever has been, whatever is yet to be, ruler of immortality, and much more; and tells of his sacrifice to create all that the world is. It is said that all animals with two rows of teeth were born from him and pretty much every other object, living and nonliving, that we know of is composed of his body constitution. Vise versa, Mayans see entities as being the creators of humans, while Aryans see it as one great power creating every other entity in the world. Mayans expressed how they perceived creation of humans in th |

Food, Tradition and My FamilyA group nearly everybody can associate themselves with is family. Family creates an inner circle of unconditional love, knowing they will be there for you all the time. This is true in my family, and through this we have created things that are only accustom to our family. My mother grew up with 4 sisters and one brother. As the family grew and evolved, the 5 women all took after their mother with great cooking recipes. My mother has a motivation to make good food, as do her sisters. Holidays are a blast; it is like watching Iron Chef in my grandmothers' kitchen. The food that I can categorize as a tradition is my grandmothers' homemade powder doughnuts. These doughnuts are the only things I can think of eating Christmas morning at my house, and the night of Christmas, we go to my grandmothers and feast the doughnuts again on the 26th. We have always gone to my grandmothers' house the day after Christmas This is something siblings, my cousins, and myself are expecting to eat. The food |

History Of Wireless SecurityWhen personal computers first appeared they were large and bulky and not very portable. To be connected to the internet or even a local network your computer needed to be wired to one spot. This was okay since you were not moving around anyway. As technology increased computers became small enough it fit in your hand. People now wanted to access networks and the internet while on the go. You can now access the internet not only in your home or office but in stores, coffee shops, parks and pretty much anywhere else. Before all this information could begin floating around we needed to make sure there were ways to make it secure. In 1990 the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) began developing specifications for implementing wireless local area network computer communication. After seven years of work the IEEE released 802.11 WLAN standard. This standard used three methods for protecting data, controlling access, wired equivalent privacy (WEP), and device authentication.
