The Fight or Flight Response

Fear is something that affects each person at some point in his or her life; this event that is associated with fear can either become a positive influence or a very negative one. There are two reactions that a person can partake in when encountering fear, and these would be to flee or cause a quarrel. This fight or flight response is triggered by fear, but how a person uses it depends on the influence of several key factors. The way that people are able to act with the fight or flight response depends on morals and the way that they are affected by the media. Both of these responses are based upon individual morals and opinions, as well as instinct; these factors allow a person to chose whether he or she shall choose to flee from a fearful situation, or fight. The fight or flight response is used for people that feel threatened or even frightened by someone or something. This can be related to many, in a lot of different situations, even in movies. Going along the topic of movies, if

The Necklace - Greed, Tragedy and Prosperity

A human's want for materialistic items can be never ending, and the belief that these things are necessary to their lives can be devastating. The want for material items can overshadow priories and distort the perspective of reality, which can lead to demise. In the short story, "The Necklace", by Guy de Maupassant, the necklace symbolizes human greed and the want for power. Throughout the story, Maupassant shows that a person's need for material things can be toxic, and this want for more materialistic things can lead to ultimate downfall. The protagonist, Madame Loisel, spends her life trying to repay a woman for a necklace that is used to impress others; she is blinded by her own desire; therefore she cannot not see what great life she can ahead of her. In the beginning of the story, Mathilde Loisel feel, "she suffer[s] ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries," which shows that the necklace plays an integral part in the short story (Mau

Reconstruction Essay

The Reconstruction era describes the time between 1863 to 1877 where there was a transformation of the southern United States including not only state but also society. In the late 19th century, Reconstruction was on the rise. After the Civil war in 1861, The United States adopted the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America. The 13th amendment was passed in 1865 and it was created in order to abolish slavery. Then in 1868 the 14th amendment was created. This amendment granted citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States including slaves." The 15th amendment was created in 1870. It prohibited the federal and state governments from preventing a citizen from voting based on their race, color, or condition of servitude. These amendments were created to aid the four million African Americans in there new role as freed men. It is debated however, that these amendments did very little. My thesis is that even though these amen

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros

Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street follows the story of a young girl named Esperanza and her life experiences growing up on Mango Street, the all-Hispanic community at which people of opulence look down upon and grimace. Esperanza has always had an ideal image and dream of what living in a house should be like, and when her life on Mango Street turns out to be nothing like she expected, she struggles to make a home out of the place and tries to figure out her identity while doing so. Esperanza's main goal is to escape Mango Street and build a good life for herself, but ultimately come back to save those who can't escape themselves. Throughout the novel, and because of her environment, Esperanza is placed in situations where she is forced to grow up as the people and life of Mango Street take her innocence away from her. Cisneros writes the novel as many vignettes recalling specific days or people that have somehow impacted Esperanza. Although Cisneros doesn't specifically clar

Interview With a Drug Addict

"You want to know about my drug addiction, right?" says Patrick as we begin the interview. Patrick is one that encompasses a pretty "laid back" personality, so to hear him say this so bluntly was shocking. He is now a typically twenty-one year old. He goes to school full time, works a consistent job, and occasionally hangs out with friends. Knowing him now, one would never draw to the conclusion that he was once a drug addict. Patrick's addiction began at the age of thirteen and slowly progressed. By the time he was fifteen, he had begun using cocaine and heroin on a daily basis. "Drugs were what my world revolved around," Patrick says to me with a face of disappointment. At the age of sixteen, things proceeded to get worse. Patrick was homeless and spending his nights sleeping under a bridge. He tells me, "I called it camping, I knew I was in denial." He did have a job, but used all the money had to purchase narcotics. I asked him, "Why do such a

Proposal for Online Voting

The internet is changing everyones expectations around speed and the convenience with which all government services and elections should be delivered. We use the internet to shop, bank, and maintain our social and professional networks on websites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, and now looking to transition our educational system to online classes. Since 2012, when the State of California introduced its fully integrated online voter registration system, Californians have been using the internet to register to vote . We are moving towards giving all of our citizens the access to be able to vote online; given that our banking and credit, as well as other transactions which requires security to protect personal information are now routinely performed in the virtual world especially given that banking and other transactions requiring security to protect personal information are now routinely performed in the virtual world. Unforgiven - Movie Evaluation

1. The film Unforgiven, directed by Clint Eastwood, is probably my favorite Western film we have watched so far. Most of the Western films we have watched have been pretty boring in my opinion but I found this film to be exciting and fun to watch throughout. What I think was good about this film was the acting and great storyline. I thought the acting was really good and the storyline is also great and keeps you interested in this film throughout. The only thing I really didnt like about this film were the few repetitive scenes, which werent too long and makes it pretty hard to complain about. Other than that, this is a very well done film with many great scenes that make this film as great as it is. 2.

The "Other" Wes Moore

"When we're young, it sometimes seems as if the world doesn't exist outside our city, our block, our house, our room. We make decisions based on what we see in that limited world and follow the only models available " (Moore, 178). Role models play a huge role in shaping an individual and the paths that they go down in their lifetime. In the case of Wes Moore and the other Wes Moore the different role models they had played a large role in shaping who they became and why they turned out so differently. The strongest influences in Wes Moore's life were strong positive influences that helped guide him into the successful adult he is now, and unfortunately the other Wes Moore had several presences in his life that, although not intentionally, steered him down the wrong path. Both of their parents played a huge role in shaping who they became. Their mothers who were their primary caregivers parented them differently. Even their father had an influence because even though they were not pres

Utopia by Thomas More

In his work, Utopia, Book One Thomas More delivers a tale of the ideal place, which appears real in every way. The work depicts conversations between More and his colleagues as they discuss various forms of government, crime and punishment, and other life events. Whenever More speaks of England, his words denote a level of passion and devotion of a person who loves his homeland but has seen it fall into ruin. In the pages of his work, he listens to his friend Raphael Hythloday describe a place almost as a Utopia. However, since More Wrote Utopia for the educated elite (More first printed it in Latin), those that read the work understood Utopia was about a nonexistent location. More still manages to make Utopia appear real due to his use of juxtaposition and allusion to compare it to England to show his discontent with the current state of the English Monarchy. As Book One begins, More uses the name of King Henry VIII of England to set the stage and make the work appear to have a tangi

The Consequences of Genetic Testing

Perhaps your family has a medical history of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, or Huntington's disease. Or perhaps your family has no history of any kind of genetic diseases whatsoever. In either situations, there is no guarantee that because Alzheimer's may run in your family, that you will automatically inherit the disease. There is also no guarantee that just because there is no known history for a genetic disease in the family, that you may not be a carrier for a certain type of genetic disease. And what about the percentage of affecting your future children or existing children? However, with the technology and medical advances that are available today, genetic screening and testing are available for those who may want to know if they are affected. But whether the results may be positive or negative, these same results can affect more than just the individual. It can change not only the individual's life but also the lives of their families, for better or worse. So how doe

The Dirty Dozen and The Filthy Thirteen

In the film "The Dirty Dozen,"" and the documentary "The Filthy Thirteen,"" there are certainly some similarities and differences between the characters, storylines, information displayed. For example, a prime difference between "The Dirty Dozen " and "The Filthy Thirteen " is the characters in the film and the real men from the documentary. Although many people think the film is based on the real Filthy Thirteen, the author of "The Dirty Dozen, " the book upon which the film is based, claims that the characters in the book/film are not at all based on Jake McNiece and his group of unruly comrades. In the film, the famed "Dirty Dozen " are convicts who attempt a suicide mission in lieu of their death sentences or prison terms. Jake McNiece and his men were simply energetic young men serving their country the best way they knew how. Another big difference between the film and the real men in the documentary is the style in which the men are led. In "The Dirty Dozen, " the convicts are led by Major Reisman, a man who had a tendency to ignore authority. He has to use discipline in order to bring his noncon

An Overview of Beowulf

Beowulf is a well-known Anglo-Saxon poem that has been in English classes around the United States for almost as long as there have been schools around. Beowulf is not an actual picture of historic Denmark, Geatland, or Sweden around 500 A.D., yet it is on a general view, a self-consistent picture, a construction bearing clearly the marks of design and thought. Beowulf to us can only truly be enjoyed if one reads it in the old English version. The effects of the poem are not the same, although the sense of the heroic beast is very true. The story of Beowulf is still relevant to today's society and relates to problems faced in current everyday life. In our society we face simple problems and difficult problems and all problems have a good and bad about them. It all depends on the person's outlook for the course of action that they will take.  Beowulf strikes peculiar reactions among scholars, historians, and professors. The increase in the amount of confusion is caused by new twists t

The Personality Traits of Othello

Othello's apparently noble and loving nature is transformed into a destructive and vengeful force by the end of the play. Discuss which elements of his character and circumstances lead to his downfall. In the beginning of William Shakespeare's tragedy, Othello, the main character, Othello is a kind, gentle and loving man. However by the end of the play he has become vengeful and homicidal. Othello's insecurity, his pride and his impulsiveness are major personality flaws that bring about this transformation. It is these aspects of his character, along with the circumstances of the play and Iago's Machiavellian manipulations, that ultimately bring about Othello's demise. Othello's insecurity, in particular about his African origins and his relationship with Desdemona, is an element of his character that contributes to his transformation from a noble, fair and loving man, to a destructive and vengeful one. One of Othello's most obvious insecurities is in regards to his race and why Desde

Equality for Men and Women

Emma Watson gave a speech at the United Nations Headquarters, launching the HeForShe campaign, calling for a greater involvement in the fight against discrimination faced by women and girls. A short essay written by Chimamanda Adichie called, We Should All Be Feminists, discusses feminism as an issue that all of humanity should be concerned with. Both the short essay and the speech create a pattern when placing one in proximity to the other to make a point that feminism is also a man's problem and specifically states ways that men can make a difference. Emma Watson and Chimamanda Adichie stress that issue of feminism today, is one equally applicable to both sexes. Both women cross the party lines to invite the men to join them in fight for equality. The purpose of both compositions, is to instill confidence in women from an early age, to engage men in feminism, and to illustrate the importance of breaking sexes stereotypes that are places on women. The most proactive way to eliminate

Research Article - Language and Intelligence

This article's research question was asking if early language and intelligence development had any relationship to future criminal behavior. This research question was interesting because it looked at different ages from birth to adulthood to see if there were any links to criminality in around 200 males by assessing their development in language and intelligence to see if there were any correlations between them. Two interesting questions that Stattin, Hakan, U StockHolm, Sweden Klackenberg-Larsson and Ingrid addressed: "At what age does intelligence start to become prognostic of future criminality? And to what extent, and how early, do differences between future criminals and noncriminals appear in language domain?" The article also examined the role of the socioeconomic status (SES) and the relationship between

My Autobiography - Life in a Syrian Family

October 26, 1995 is the day that I was born. Back then, my parents used to live in a small village by the name of Almishtaya. There weren't any hospitals nearby in the village, so a day before my mom was due, my parents travelled to the city to give birth to me. During the night of October 25 they were having difficulties because I was not coming out willingly; my father was so stressed he went outside to smoke a cigarette, and around four o'clock the nurse came outside and she told my father I was born. My father was so happy, yet they didn't know what to call me, since the day was still during sunrise; he decided to name me Nour, which means sunrise. When I was born I was four pounds fifteen inches. I was snow white of color with dark black hair. As baby I never was bottle fed, I was breast fed for about two years. Surprisingly I also stopped wearing diapers when I reached a year old. Many parents don't plan for the last child, yet mine actually planned to have me. My parents had a

The Obsessive Media - Causing Eating Disorders

In today's society, models and actors/actresses are praised and envied for their slim waists, skinny thighs, and toned bodies. Many people see these models and actors in multiple forms of media and they compare their bodies to the bodies that they see in these forms of media. These people will then do anything to get the body that the media considers as "ideal". This includes developing an eating disorder, even if it could put their bodies and lives into serious danger. I have personally witnessed how the media can affect someone's image of themselves and can tell, even though researchers from the other side of the argument claim genetics is the only cause of eating disorders, that the media definitely has an influence on someone developing anorexia or bulimia. The media, such as televisions, internet, and magazines, needs to realize that the advertisements they put out can cause people to develop an eating disorder and we, as buyers, need to take a stand against these types

The Wilderness Act of 1964

On September 3, 1964 Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th president of the United States signed the Wilderness Act. After attending the 50th and 30th Wilderness Event here in Laramie, Wyoming, I learned quite a few things about the Wilderness Act and its importance on our people, land, and future generations. This event celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act signed in 1964, as well as celebrating the anniversary of the Wyoming Wilderness Act of 1984. I came into the event thinking I already knew enough about wilderness, and what's coming of it in the U.S. today, but came out knowing so much more. An inspiring definition given during the celebration from a book called, "Wilderness" by Kim Barnes, spoke out to me. In her book she says, what is wilderness? Then it describes, "Wilderness something in the mountain air that feeds and inspires." This simple but honest sentence speaks out to me because it makes me reminisce on moments I've spent out on the mountain hiking or bikin

Reaction to Out of This Furnace by Thomas Bell

After Mike's death his body was brought back to Mary's house, before he was buried. Mary lost a piece of herself when Mike died. She did not want to comprehend life without him. Mary gave away his clothes to strangers rather than giving to charity. This was a way for many to feel less grief. It was too hard for her to see his clothing on another man. It would just bring back memories that she could not handle. Mary eventually moved out of the house with the children, in order to help with her grieving process. Mary could not afford much without Mike's income. She had the insurance proceeds she had received, but that was in the bank. Mary was smart and did not want to use all of the funds that she had received. Johnny had taken a job selling papers. This was not a high paying job, but it was income. He had to work hard in order to make any money, but he did what he had to do for that paycheck. Money was tight for Mary and her family. She tried her best to provide for them, but without the income of Mike and his support

Latin American Literature and English Translations

Dear Dr. L ______________, Based on the feedback that I received, I made many changes. My essay was mostly critiqued to be a summary of the works cited. I made an effort to stick to the subject of the essay. I also had to make the thesis stand out more to gain the reader's attention. Furthermore, I attempted to make the essay my own not a summary of work in existence. The strength of my essay is where I explained how Incan culture, government and religion was in no way inferior to that of the Spaniards. The weakness of my essay in my opinion is in my refrain from using footnotes. I attempted to avoid its use. Instead I employed a similar style of writing as that in Foundational Fictions: When History was romance in Latin America by Doris Sommer. I explained my thesis in my own voice using information drawn from my works cited. My use of quotations is an area I would like feedback on. Sincerely, Benedict ______________ El Ynca or Inca Garcilaso de la Vega has for a long time been c

Australia and the Migrant Experience

The migrant experience has not always been inviting. Over the past 200 years Australia has moved from its early immigration of white European settlers to incorporate new waves of immigrant groups. Each one has created a splash, a period of adjustment, but it also has finally found a way to the very interior of Australian society and Australian culture. Once limited to the humble meat pie or fish and chips, Australian fusion cooking is now world-renowned. Take-away generally consists of pizza, souvlaki and Thai or Indian curries, and there's nothing quite like the amazing goodness of a steaming bowl of Vietnamese soup noodles. Australia is now the destination of choice, housing some of the most livable cities in the world and with immigration continuing to fuel strong cultural and economic growth. As Australia opens its boarders to an increasingly diverse population, this also requires Australians themselves to open their minds to include new and diverse lifestyles, foods, cultural trad

Offensive and Intimidating - Harassment

Harassment is an act that is offensive and intimidating in nature and its intention is to cause an upset or disturbance to the victim. The actions involved in harassment may be repetitive and systematic and they are intended to cause harm or to annoy a person since they entail demands and threats. The purpose of such actions may vary and they may range from wanting to make someone quit their job, as a result of racial prejudice, for sexual favors, as a result of malice and the sadistic nature of other people in order to inflict fear to a particular person. These acts are inhumane since they are intended to cause pain and this is harmful since it lowers the self-esteem and confidence of that particular person who is being harassed. The act of harassment should be condemned since it violates the rights of a person since the virtue of equality is undermined and any person who performs such an act should be punishable by the law. Cases of harassment are common in the workplaces and this un

Elasticity Analysis - Supply and Demand

Elasticity Analysis The first task given by the supervisor is to calculate the elasticities of each independent variable that is present in the model. In order to do so, the partial derivatives for each variable would be calculated. This is done as the partial derivative shows the effect on the dependent variable that is caused by the independent variables. When there are more than one independent variables involved, the best method to do this is to find the effect on the dependent variable caused by each variable individually. In order to show this, each independent variable is taken in isolation. By is isolating this impact, the effect of the independent variable alone can be seen. The partial derivative for model 1 are shown as Price elasticity of demand = ΔQ/δP = -42 + 20X Competitor's price elasticity of demand = ΔQ/δX = 20P Income elasticity of demand = ΔQ/δI = 5.2 Advertising elasticity of demand =ΔQ/δA = 0.2 Microwave elasticity of demand = ΔQ/δM = 25 The same pro
