Love in Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms

Love brings security, well-being, and happiness to a person. Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms portrays a tragic romance between Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley. The two individuals both use each other as an escape from the insanity of the war. They begin their relationship as a shallow escape; however, as time passes by, Henry's relationship with Barkley gradually blooms into something that becomes valued rather than a brief getaway. Hemingway animates love as a replacement for Catherine's and Frederic's scars during the war and further emphasizes from his nihilistic view on life- that no matter what people do or where they go,love itself can provide them a private place, where they could go to separate and evade the horrible realities of society occurring in and around them. Love is a getaway to happiness. Catherine uses love as an esca

The Discrimination of LGBTQIA+ Individuals

1. INTRODUCTION: A. - Discrimination: acting differently towards someone based on prejudice. - Prejudice: stereotyping a person based on characteristics of a group to which the person belongs without regard to how the person may vary from group characteristics B. About one in four students from elementary school through high school are victims of bullying and harassment while on school property because of their race, ethnicity, gender, disability, religion or sexual orientation (BullyingStatistics.org). Unfortunately, the main cause of bullying is usually due to something that may set the bullied individual apart from the "norm ", and one of those main causes is sexual orientation. C. Harassment (both physical and mental) and prejudice that individuals face because of their sexual orientation can have a real and devastating impact, such as anxiety, depression and even suicide. But this problem could be alleviated if we simply solve the interpersonal communication defect that is prejudi

Media and Self Image

Has it ever occurred to you that daily tasks such as; flipping open a magazine, turning on the television, listening to the radio or even playing with your favorite toy is influencing society tremendously? According to http://psychcentral.com/news/2006/10/27/media-can-damage-self-image/362.html "Women who already have low opinions of their physical appearance are at an even greater risk for negative effects from media images, " says Gayle R. Bessenoff, Ph.D. That being said, we need to draw attention to this issue. The media plays a significant role in society leading to physical and psychological issues. The media has come across influencing societies self image into two key factors. According to The National Eating Disorders Associating, "Eating disorders are complex conditions that can arise from a variety of potential causes. Once started, however, they can create a self-perpetuating cycle of physical and emotional destruction...." The media defines a specified appearance for the society to follow which dist

Dante and Aristotle - Ethical Frameworks

In Dante's Inferno, Virgil delineates that, there are "three dispositions that Heaven refuses, Incontinence, malice, and mad bestiality " (Inferno, Canto XI, 80). The sinners are characterized by their immoderacy and inability to regulate their desires. Vices in the inferno thus concur with Aristotle's Ethical framework insofar as vice, as posited by Aristotle in The Nicomachean Ethics, is characterized similarly by immoderacy and incontinence. As Dante proceeds through each circle of Hell, the severity of punishment for each sinner seems to increase, representing the degree of immorality Dante identifies with each respective sin. The circles are structured in accordance with the Aristotelian conception of virtue and vice: they are grouped into the sins of wantonness, violence, and fraud. Each circle condemns some sort of excessive or deficient act, the very same structure of morality we find in Aristotle's Doctrine of the Mean. Indeed, it seems Aristotelian morality is the very sourc

Science of the Baseball Bat

My question for the science fair is, how do different types of baseball bats effect the distance of the ball? There are three main types of bats that I want to investigate. They are bats made of wood, aluminum, and composite (a type of plastic). There are three key terms that can help answer my question: Density, Acoustics, and Physics. Density is the amount of mass in a given volume. Acoustics are the points along the bat that will amplify the vibration of the ball, causing the ball to go further. Physics involves the maximum speed needed to achieve the maximum distance. The higher the speed, the further the ball will travel. The density of the baseball bat plays a huge part in how hard the ball is hit. Density is the amount of mass in a given volume or in similar terms; the weight of an object. Violent Video Games, Children and Adolescents

Video gaming has become a popular activity for people of all ages. Many children and adolescents spend large amounts of time playing them. Video gaming is a multibillion-dollar industry bringing in money more than movies and DVDs. Video gaming has become very realistic, many games are now played online and with other people from different countries. There has been a disagreement about the effects of violent video games on children and adolescents. So the question is; what impact do violent video games hold on children? And how exactly do they affect a child's behavior? The future of entertainment revolves around technology. Video games are becoming more and more realistic (The Corner). Studies have shown that children who play constantly violent video games become numb or "immune " to the horror of violence (Drwilda). Also, according to the American Psychological Association; violent video games increase children's aggression (VIN). Dr. Phil, the American television personality, a

History of Holland

Holland, ˜an island of freedom', a country where trading from all around the world takes place, a place where artists, male or female, are able to freely create and sell their works to others. It was clear that Holland had something different from the other empires, making it so successful. This was a result of the overthrow of Spanish rule, the need for new patrons and new art styles, and the beginning of an art trading revolution. The country of Holland was under the control of Spain for decades. Over the years there was constant religious war. The Dutch revolted, a monstrous rebellion occurred, and the Spanish were defeated. The Dutch were tired of religious battles and wanted to prosper through international trade. Therefore, once freed, a republic was created, a country based sol

The Great Alexander the Great

What makes a man truly great? No man is without fault, and in my opinion there has only been one man who walked upon this earth that was without fault. Alexander the Great has often times been described as a megalomaniac, over ambitious, paranoid drunkard who believed in his own divinity. However, I believe that the man has done many things in which to deserve the title "Great. " At an early age Alexander was somewhat of an over achiever. He had conquered territories that were unlikely for his time. He did this without modern technology or weaponry, troop movements were made largely on foot and communications were done face to face. At twenty years old, he already inherited an empire of Macedon after his father, Philip's assassination. In thirteen short years, his empire stretched for three thousand miles. Alexander was a philosophical idealist who strived to create unity in attempting to integrate Persians and Orientals into his administration and army. He had encouraged his commande

Nikola Tesla - More than a Internet Name

Introduction Do you currently own a cell phone? Is it a smart phone or just a regular flip phone? In this society, it is probably more likely than not that it is a smart phone. Who can we credit with the invention of smart phone technology? That answer is Nikola Tesla. Although Nikola Tesla may be associated with technology and the Internet, many may not actually be aware of the history behind his name. Actually, Nikola is one of the most prominent people within the field of technology. Interestingly enough, Nikola envisioned smartphone technology in 1901 and actually shared his thoughts with Thomas Edison on the idea he had that we now know as cellphone and text messaging. Yet Nikola was not credited with contributing to these technologies until decades after he died in 1943. So therefore Nikolas background consisted of a lack of acknowledgement for his creative thoughts and creations related to technology and post humorous prominence. Background Nikola Tesla migrated to the Unite

Hunters in the Snow" by Tobias Wolf

The short story "Hunters in the Snow " by Tobias Wolf is about three men, Kenny, Frank and Tub, who set out on a hunting trip. The theme of this short story is that selfishness is dangerous and can lead to one's own downfall. This is clearly demonstrated by the characterization of each of the three men. The first of the three main characters is Frank. At the beginning of the story, the reader is shown how self-centered Frank is. All three men are supposed to be friends, but they don't treat each other with respect. When the three men arrive at the field, they have to go through a series of fences. Tub, their friend, is a heavyset man and has difficulty getting through the fences. Instead of helping Tub by "lifting up on the top wire and stepping on the bottom wire " Frank just stands, with Kenny, and watches Tub struggle. At one point in the story, Tub is separated from Frank and Kenny. When he finally catches up with them, he tells Frank he was lost. Frank doesn't care at a

The Cosmic Significance of Britney Spears

From Tom Perrotta's "The Cosmic Significance of Britney Spears, " Perrotta draws on the fact that he is writing about a famous teenage after 9/11, a time of crisis in America. However, at the same time, he is mocking America's fascination with celebrities, while George Orwell argues in his own essay, "Politics and the English Language, " that political leaders are to blame for the problems in society. In Perrotta's essay, which was featured in the December 2001 edition of GQ, he discusses the phenomena of Britney Spears. He compares Britney to other global pop figures: Elvis, Madonna, Kurt Cobain, and Michael Jackson. Perrotta focuses on the texts in themselves as social norms in America: religious habits, societal norms, race, sexuality, communities, and struggles and trauma. However, he also drops on the irony that he is writing a piece on teen sensation Britney Spears after the devastation of 9/11. In "The Cosmic Significance of Britney Spears, " Tom Perrotta looks at America's obs

Eye Contact in a Conversation

Eye contact "a meeting of the eyes of two people. Like in any other meeting, someone plays a role of an initiator and if the other party accepts the invitation of a beckoning glance or simply obeys the demanding look, eye contact is established between people, they look into each other's faces. Establishing eye contact, the ability to face the interlocutor " is the most important skill that enables effective communication. Such skill is something that should be learned, because most people hide their eyes while communicating, there is no eye contact between the interlocutors. Not every eye contact makes the companion happy, but it always makes him or her understand that he or she is in the spotlight. When the interviewee sees your eyes, feels your attention, it raises his or her attention to you and your words. Eye contact makes it easier to inform your interlocutor of your feelings, ideas and emotions. Two Views of a River by Mark Twain

In the article "Two Views of a River ", Mark Twain tries to spread the message that as someone gains knowledge or matured in something, they also lose innocence and joy. There are many incidents happen in his or her life when they don't even realize that if they gain something, they also lose excitement and passion. In colleges, many students who had been relied on their parents become capable person to live alone. But at the same time, they also lost the time to be with their parent. The three different areas when a person become expert, he or she also loses something are relationship, playing sport or fantasy. A relationship between two people can have many different meaning for example the children and parents or two lovers which could change his or her attitude by understanding truly relation between them. Most people assume that sun is the source of all energy; the napping is also the greatest source of energy. In her article, Barbara Holland "Naps " analyzing that creativity is outgrowth of rest; it is not necessary to be working all the time if someone desire to get creative thought. The Wrath of Achilleus

Paris and the Trojan army abducted the most beautiful woman in all of Greece, Helen, daughter of Zeus and wife of Menelaus King of Sparta; thus the war started. At the start of book one of the Iliad, the war between the Trojans and the Achaians had been going on for some time. The Achaian army, lead by Achilleus, took a town and as their spoils two women in particular. The abduction marks the beginning of an epic quarrel between Agamemnon, King of the Achaians, and Achilleus, the Achaian's greatest warrior. Although King Agamemnon can do and take whatever he pleases, publicly undermining a man with as great a pride as Achilleus was a foolish gesture, for the Achaians will soon see the wrath of their brilliant soldier. "Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilleus and its devastation, which put pains thousandfold upon the Achaians, hurled in their multitudes to the house of Hades strong should of heroes "(1.1-7). Modern Propoganda

Ever since the advertising boom of the 1950's, America has given way to propaganda at every turn in everyday life. According to Garth S. Jowett and Victoria O'Donnell in Propaganda & Persuasion, Propaganda is "the deliberate, systematic attempt to shape perceptions, manipulate cognitions, and direct behavior to achieve a response that furthers the desired intent of the propagandist ". This long, uninteresting definition only scratches the surface of the true nature and practical application of propaganda in American society today. Propaganda is simply using images, languages, and most importantly the emotions of everyday people to convince them to conform to whatever message the source of the propaganda desires. Most people think the word "propaganda " as a connotation to messages or statements from the government that feed its citizens lies and half-truths. Propaganda does not come only from a government, but from corporations, interest groups, and individuals seeking to draw support

Life is a Dream by Pedro Calderon de la Barca

I chose to read the play "Life is a Dream " by Pedro Calderòn de la Barca. It was first published in 1635. I chose to read the play because of the title. The title "Life is a Dream " is a well known metaphor. Dreams can be intensely real but in reality they are not. There aren't many characters overall in this play but the main ones are Segismundo and Basilio Other characters are Rosaura, Clotaldo, Estrella and Astolfo. Basilio is the king of Poland and the father of Segismundo who is a prince. Rosaura is a noble lady from Muscovy. Clotaldo is an elderly man but is also Segismundo's jailer and companion. Estrella is a niece of Basilio and she is a princess. She has a servant named Clarín. Astolfo is Basilio's nephew and is also the duke of Muscovy. Astolfo and Estrella have feelings for each other. In the play, Basilio imprisons Segismundo in a tower because he believes in a prophecy of the heavens that would kill him and doom the country if he lives freely. This tower is S

Right vs. Morally Right

As populations have grown over the past few decades, so too has the global awareness of how immigration is impacting countries on an international level. Because of this, the issue of immigration and citizenship in the US is a hotly contested topic. Whether it be immigrants who have crossed the border illegally, or those seeking to gain citizenship through more traditional means, there are only a few different ways to obtain citizenship to the United States. The question of whether or not the U.S. should consider selling citizenship to those who want it is then brought into light as a means to expedite the process. I don't agree with this idea. While I believe countries, specifically the United States, have a right to decide who enters the country or becomes a citizen, I don't believe selling citizenship is a feasible plan. First of all, I believe resorting to selling citizenship would defeat the purpose of even having citizenship in the first place. Being a member of the Unit

An Overview of Sex Addiction

When you get caught doing something wrong what is the first thing you do? Is your first instinct to own up to what ever it is you did wrong or do you come up with an elaborate excuse? For most people it would be the latter. One situation where making up an excuse seems to be common is when you are confronting sex addiction. Sex addiction is defined as a "progressive intimacy disorder characterized by compulsive sexual thoughts and acts ". In other words, individuals who are unable to perform everyday tasks because they have constant sexual images running through their heads are defined as sex addicts. Some researchers believe that sex addiction is in fact a real disorder while others believe that is an excuse used by many men and women to cover for their sexual behavior. Both sides make valid points but overall researchers against sex addiction being real have stronger evidence to prove their point. Personally, I do not believe that sex is a real disorder simply based on the fact that

A Dive Into the Wealth Gap

Ever since the year 2007, America has been constantly struggling with keeping the balance of wealth between its low/middle class and its one-percenters.  One question that I want an answer for is: Why do the one-percenters hold onto their excessive amounts of wealth when they know it hurts the economy of America as a whole?  As nave as it sounds, it still needs an answer, a resolve.  Without a resolve, I fear that American economy would soon collapse because the middle class has been slowly diminishing due to the greed of the one-percenters. The simple resolve to this is to simply have the government tax the wealthy again so they would be forced to help stimulate the economy.  But of course this is no easy feat when the wealthy want to grasp their money and when America has been established as a Capitalist country.  Maybe, somehow, we can convince the one-percenters to be more active with donations and circulating money to the lower/middle classes because the current "trickl

Confucianism and Daoism in Pre-Modern Chinese Literature

Confucianism and Daoism and two schools of thought which are very similar in nature. This is understandable as Confucius was a studier of the Dao, and drew from it heavily in creating his own philosophical teachings and ideas. Due to this, there is a belief among some religious scholars that Confucianism is the active form of the passive Dao. While some put forth this theory and cite examples of Confucius' rituals and strict hierarchy as support, others believe that the most effective way is to read and contemplate the literature of both the Zhuang-zi and The Analects, as we must not read the writings and take it at our perspective, but allow our understanding to aid us in tracing back to what was in the writer's mind. The Poems cause a point of contention between followers of the dao and those of Confucius by having their respective teacher's interpret them in different ways. When Confucius speaks of the poems, he teaches them the way he sees them, and claims that to be the true path. When Zhuangzi teaches the poems, he teaches that what we understand the poems to mean, is not the meaning. We must use our understanding combined with our under

American Citizens and Civil Rights

Ole Miss Who has the say when it comes to guaranteeing citizens their civil rights? Well this was an issue that was brought up when African Americans were guaranteed their Civil Right after it was signed into the constitution and made into law, the state of Mississippi then denied African American their Civil Rights. Civil Rights in Mississippi must guaranteed by the strength of federal law and its enforcement or suffer being sabotaged by state's rights and the laws of Mississippi. State tradition had long been the friend of segregation and the cruel enemy of integration. "Segregation in Mississippi was institutionalized and memorialized. Since 1911, a Confederate Monument stood on the whites that their fore-fathers had fought bravely against overwhelming odds to defend the Mississippi Way of Life, at the center of which were white supremacy and racial segregation " (Battle, 24). That was the case before the civil rights movement of the mid 1960's. Civil rights in general and integrat

Mental Disorder in Silver Linings Playbook

The Silver Linings Playbook approaches many different types of mental diseases through the characters in the movie. The most apparent mental disease having to do with the main character Pat, brilliantly played by Bradley Cooper. As Pat goes to the court-mandated therapy sessions, we soon learn that he has bipolar disorder. " Scientists have discovered that bipolar disorder can be acquired through genes but also environmental factors. The mood disorder causes the individual to experience depression and mania.

Believing in Ghosts

There are people who believe in ghosts and there are people who don't. Some people don't believe the existence of the ghost because they think ghosts are nonsense creatures which made up by others. However, there are other people who believe in ghost. Some people believe in ghost because of the culture and some said they had seen the ghost with their one eyes, also there are super natural things which happened in daily life are hard to explain. Based on the personal experience, the super natural things which are hard to explain and the people who claim they have the ability to communicate and haunt the ghost, the existence of the ghost is real. First of all, the culture in our country do believe that there are ghost exist after people died. AIDS and HIV in Africa

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS. AIDS is the final stage of a person infected with HIV. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) can be transmitted from one person to another through exposure of bodily fluids such as blood from sharing a needle with an HIV infected person, vaginal and rectal fluids or semen from sexual intercourse, and breast milk from a HIV infected mother to her child which is referred to as "Perinatal Transmission of HIV ". HIV transmission from mother to child can occur during pregnancy, labor, delivery of the child and most commonly, through breastfeeding. Nearly % of HIV infected women will pass the virus to their children during one of these stages after conception. HIV infection, a serious case by itself from the start, is hardly ever recognized since the symptoms are flu-like. Without getting tested in a clinic or hospital, there is nearly no possibility that a person can know they are infected with the virus. Perinatal Transmission
