Zoo Animals - Captive for Life

Going to the zoo is a fun outing for many people, but the real question is should those animals be kept in captivity? A couple reasons animals should be held captive are: research and education, and breeding which can prevent extinction. However, many believe that animals should not be held captive because of the aggression they display towards their keepers, their confinement is much smaller than the wild, and it can also cause captive stress which can shorten their lifespan. Animals should not be held captive. In most cases animals are more aggressive towards humans when held captive compared to when they are in the wild. There have been many attacks of animals on their keepers; people need to be aware that even though these animals are captive and have trainers, they are still wild animals. A zoo keeper in Toledo w

The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

"The Invention of Wings," by Sue Monk Kidd is a Pre-Civil war book written about two girls in the south. The story follows the lives of Sarah Grimke and Handful (Hetty) through the years of childhood all the way to adulthood. Sarah is a Southern girl growing up in South Carolina. She is an upper class white women living on her family plantation. Handful is an African American slave growing up on the Grimke family plantation. This book does a great job of showing the awful and horrible things that slavery can do to people. Not only to the slaves, but also the people and institutions involved with slavery. One institution that was enslaved in this book was the church, more importantly the St. Philip's Episcopal Church mentioned in the book. The Church had to justify that slavery was gods will and slaves should be obedient to their masters. Revered Hall quoted, "Slaves, be obedient to them that are your masters, with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as unto Christ."" The Reve

Racism - A Continuing Problem in America

The United States was founded upon diversity. Racism in America began when the first African slaves were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the production of such lucrative crops as tobacco. These slaves were not brought by will, but by force, and they faced great oppression while giving the dominant white race the blue collar resource that they so essentially needed in order to stake their claim in the new and soon to flourish United States of America. Plagued by hundreds of years of slavery, discrimination, segregation, hatred, and victimization, blacks and other minorities have been looked upon as second rate in America. Three-hundred and ninety six years later and here we stand as a country plagued by the same sickness of disease and hatred for someone because of their apparent differences. Although some landmark victories have been made in the fight for racial equality, the infectious mentality and condition of racism is still alive and

Trauma - Psychological and Physical

There are two significant types of trauma: psychological and physical. Psychological trauma is a form of injury that impairs an individual's mental and emotional capacities, whereas physical trauma is harm to the body from an external source. This form of trauma can be vividly seen in Dawn and Men in the Sun written by Elie Wiesel and Ghassan Kanafani respectively. In Dawn and Men in the Sun, Elisha and Marwan both experience the brutality of war and trauma, which causes their identity to change entirely. Both Elisha and Marwan were youths that had survived agonizing pain and suffering through difficult war times such as the Holocaust and Al- Nakba. Al- Nakba was " Day of Catastrophe" because millions of people became refugees and thousands of others were massacred. Elisha being a Holocaust survivor struggles to acquire his identity thus, his loneliness and vulnerability becomes the primary motive of The Movement. In the novel Dawn, Elisha the narrator says " Gad had rec

Theories of Tsoti

Tsotsi takes us on an incredible emotional journey where we witness a world filled with cruelty, violence and grave poverty. In this paper, the use of routine activities theory and general strain theory help in explaining the level of random violence. We may just look at a person or a group of individuals and think that they are sociopaths. Many times we cannot fathom why some people commit crimes, whilst others even under the same circumstances, do not. The need for getting to the underlying root as to why people commit a crime is particularly significant, for regardless of the fact that crime is a normal social phenomenon, it is essential to understand criminals, therefore, helping to reduce the level of criminality in society. Routine activities theory and general strain theory both do their utmost best in bringing to light an understanding of the world of crime. However, I believe that the general strain theory brings across a better approach when it comes to the comprehension, ex

Characteristics of a Third-Class Petty Officer (PO3)

Some of the traits of a good third class petty officer are positive thinking, have a genuine interest in people, knowing how to lead, keeping the responsibility going between lower ranking people and upper management, initiative, maintain liaison between other units/ departments, promotes team work, discipline, and morale, but most of all is good to work with and stays out of the way of reaching the divisions' common goal. A good petty officer is a good decision maker. A common complaint heard from subordinates is "You can't get a decision from them. " And that would affect the mission. They would also show fairness. People are always quick to call favoritism on leadership in the navy. A good petty officer would be humbled to be at such rank and understand where subordinate shipmates are coming from when a personal problem comes about for they, too were at such rank at one time. The Navy is full of people who tend to forget where they came from. People who don't want to be brought dow

The Science of Uterus Transplants

When we think of organ transplants: hearts, lungs, kidneys, and livers usually come to mind first. Recently in the UK and other countries, uterus transplants are being tested out to help infertile women who were born without a uterus or had to have a hysterectomy due to cancer. In the article, "Womb Transplant Leads to Successful Birth for Swedish Mother, " by Peniel M. Dimberu, he discusses the history and medical procedures the 35-year-old Swedish women had to go through to deliver a baby. Dimberu states the woman was born with congenital Rokitansky syndrome. The author describes the surgery for the uterus transplant was about 10 hours, and a 61-year-old close friend was the donor. After the surgery, the woman was monitored for about a year before giving her IVF treatments. During this time, she had three mild cases of rejection but it was treated with immunosuppressive drugs. The pregnancy lasted only to the 32nd week because the woman developed pre-eclampsia. According

The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Illiad

The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Iliad are both ancient works of literature centered around one major character that simultaneously plays the role of hero and anti-hero. Despite being written during different times, by different people and during different civilizations, they share a strikingly similar theme centered on the Gods and their relationship with man. This paper will review, illustrate and expatiate on some of the similarities and differences found in both books. It will also touch on various meeting points and parallels between both characters and how such complex characters are simplified by the authors of both stories. The Epic of Gilgamesh begins by describing Gilgamesh as a man who travelled the world but found no man to be his match, as a man so blessed by the Gods he lorded over all men he led, their property and their wives (Epic of Gilgamesh Chapter 1). The author of the epic tries to establish the kind of relationship that existed between man and the Gods by using

Billy Lynn and American Football

American football is now intermingled into the psyche of the American people. Over the years it has gained more and more appeal to the population of the United States to the point that it has now amassed a fan base so broad that it is now a known sport to represent America and what it stands for. The typical American mindset is to like things that are loud, big, and most of all powerful. Americans tend to find this mindset in fashion and appealing, just by looking at the America military which is over two million strong, to the vast multi-billion dollar entertainment industry, "bigger is better". We have big cities, big cars, and lots of big open spaces. Football is able to play very well into this kind of mentality. It is mostly played by large athletic people who run fast and hit harder. The stadiums created to house these events are extremely large, loud and wild with the ability to pack in a massive amount of people. As American culture has transformed from one focusing on unity, l

The Rocket Industry - Reusability

It was October 7th of 2013. All of our eyes were fixated on the high definition screen television. The volume was turned down, but the thunderous noises of the Merlin engines still created echoes throughout the room. Then came the moment we were all waiting for: as we caught our breaths, we saw SpaceX's Grasshopper land from a height of 744m on to its launching platform. An applause rang from the crowd of spectators and a few high-fives went around. We knew that we were one step closer to the end of the testing phase and the actual implementation of this reusable rocket. That's what I said: a reusable rocket. Starting in 2012, SpaceX began to launch the Grasshopper on a routine-basis in hopes that it would change the rocket industry. The first stages of the testing program required a lot of risk and patience. "Over the next few months, we'll gradually increase the altitude and speed, " Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, explai

Major World Religions

When looking at different cultures, the differences between each stand out very clearly. Likewise, amongst all the different cultures of the world, one aspect is prevalent in every culture regardless of time, location, and even influence. All cultures of all time have always had a religious aspect. Religion is one of the few aspects that has withstood the test of time and distance, as every culture has a religion in its history. Although every culture has the concept of religion in common, the different views of religion vary greatly, from the practice of polytheism where one worships many gods, to the practice of monotheism where one worships only one god. A classic example of a monotheistic religion is Islam. In Islam the fact of there being only one, almighty god is undeniable. Not only is the fact that only Allah should be praised repeated in their holy text, the Koran, but the theme of Allah being supreme can be seen in virtually every religious art work. This can range from the

Summary of A Museum Visit

Walking through the illustrious halls of the Met, I struggled with choosing just one of the many magnificent pieces of art that reside in the distinguished museum. I finally landed on the captivating painting by Giovanni Francesco Barbieri nicknamed Il Guercino: Samson Captured by the Philistines. The piece was mounted in the chamber directly ahead, after walking up the primary staircase of the building. The painting immediately grabs your attention because of its elevated placement on the wall combined with its shear size measuring around 75.25 x 93.25 in. or 6.27 x 7.77 ft. The painting is composed by oil on canvas, and was completed in 1619. The gallery label in the museum provided important objective information about the piece including the fact that the piece was created through the commission of Cardinal Giacomo Serra, the papal legate to Ferrara (city in northern Italy). Over the course of his life Serra delegated several other commissions to Guercino and was known as a notable

Visual Analysis of My Tattoo

On a daily basis someone will stop me and ask about the peace sign I have tattooed on my right wrist. Majority of the time someone just sees the small, dark, bolded peace sign about the size of a golf ball tattooed on my wrist as your typical 21st century girl tattoo, but once I explain the meaning behind it people understand that there is a powerful story behind it and I did not just go and copy the singer Lady Gaga. The peace sign, along with a cross and heart is one of three tattoos on my body. All three tattoos have a special meaning to me but the peace sign is my favorite. This tattoo represents the relationship I had growing up with my grandmother before she passed away. My grandmother was a very important person in my life and became even more important when I was around the age of five. My parents filed for a divorce when I started kindergarten and my life started to become a little crazy between getting used to going to school and not having my parents live together. For a w

The Genesis of East Asia: 221 B.C.–A.D. 907

There are many books that are very informative about a certain topic. Some books just explain to a reader in very biased approach, they can be very knowledgeable yet viewed in only one way. For this a reader needs to understand what the authors' viewpoints are and read in manner where one can be unbiased. Critiquing the book is the best way to understand what views the author might have. In the book, The Genesis of East Asia, 221 B.C- A.D. 907, by Charles Holcombe, talks about why Asia is called East Asia. It is book full of information on China and how it brought about similar religion and writing throughout Asia. After reading this book I began to understand what the authors view were. The author has a sense of being biased, a lot of it was positive for the book and some were negative. Also I began to understand Holcombe's methodology; he had different types that were useful and appropriate. Holcombe even had theoretical propositions that seem to be creditable with all the informa

Poetry and Coping with Death

People deal with everyday situations very differently than others. Everyone is diverse; we handle things in our own unique way, possibly because of how we were raised or something that has happened in our past. For example, when I was thirteen years old my father passed away therefore I deal with death in my own way, unlike someone who wont lose their father until they may be much older. Death is a very serious topic and one-way people express their feelings regarding it is through poetry. Do not Go Gentle Into that Good Night written by Dylan Thomas, talks about death as if he hates it and doesnt want it to occur. Daddy written by Sylvia Plath, is about her father dying and her madness that follows. Lastly, Death be Not Proud written by John Donne mocks death. Bereavement is dealt very differently throughout these poems by different authors describing the hard times they have gone through in life where death may have been the dominant subject. My personal favorite was Do not Go Gentl

George Catalano - Promoting Peace in Engineering

In George Catalano's article "Promoting Peace in Engineering," he proposes that the way to promote peace is through the education of engineering. He proposes several ways of modifying the ABET Criteria. ABET, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, is an organization that accredits college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology. Catalano discusses three different possible modifications to make to these university programs in order to promote peace. Those three modifications to promote peace are through the development of awareness for compassion, caution, and reflection; through an improved understanding of other cultures; and through peaceful conflict resolution. Catalano begins by defending how he believes that society is promoting that engineers are playing crucial roles in defeating Iraq. "Technology developed by engineers in university research labs across the nation helped make the difference. (Catalano,

The Role of a Marketing Executive

In todays world it is increasingly difficult to move along in the daily grind without encountering two things, advertisements and technology. We are inundated every single day with advertisement after advertisement, and the medium for which these are delivered are almost endless. Television, radio, magazines, newspapers, billboards, web advertisements they are quite literally everywhere. And thats nothing to speak of how plugged in we are, between smart phones that are so mobile, laptops, billboards that are now giant TVs on the go. Marketing executives have a multitude of avenues to let us know what is cool and how to spend our money. In The Rolling Stone, a widely reputable magazine known for catering to its audience of rock stars and their fans, readers are shown a variety of ads that touch on a rock stars lifestyle which, in this issue, is tobacco, chocolate and alcohol. In this particular June issue, there is an advertisement for Evan Williams Kentucky Bourbon. The ad pictures

Biography of Nadine Gordimer

The Story That Told a Greater One Woodstock immediately comes to mind; Jackie Robinson as the first African American Major League Baseball player for the Brooklyn Dodgers; Gandhi. All throughout history, there have been times in which a moment or event nearly summed up a generation: what happened during that time period, what the people were experiencing, the emotional state of a country, the impact of a single person all merely examples of stories that helped share a larger one. More often than not, an explanation is not even necessary. Nadine Gordimer may not be a household name here in the United States, but in South Africa her story, The Moment Before the Gun Went Off captured the heart of the country in a way that no other story during the time period could, a snapshot not only containing the picture of what was happening, but the feeling in the air, the thoughts on everyones minds, and what everyone knew was eventually coming. With such a large impact on so many people, the

The Romantic Imagination

Although many great names are associated with Romantic literature, two poets who stand out as immensely influential figures are William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Friends during their own lifetimes, Wordsworth and Coleridge collaborated near the end of the eighteenth century to create "a volume that many literary historians consider to be the opening statement of Romanticism in England" (Matlak and Mellor, 681). In the Preface of this volume, titled Lyrical Ballads, with a Few Other Poems, Wordsworth describes the key elements that constitute Romantic literature, among them the role of the Imagination. However, before one can understand the role of the Imagination in Romantic literature, it is vital to understand what constitutes the Imagination as described by Coleridge in his Biographia Literaria, and how this definition ties in with Wordsworths comments in his Preface. Although Wordsworths "Preface" and Coleridges definition of Imagination illuminate the meaning and pur

Live Free or Die!

Chaos or more chaos is what you get when Freedom of speech is not equally balanced with order. In the lord of the flies William Golding shows what he thinks would happen if a group of boys were stranded on a island and try to make a society with rules and everything without any adults. A balance of freedom and order is needed because without it democracy will fail due to the people revolting if there is too much order and getting out of control if there is too much freedom but what is "Too much". Too much is simply more than a single person can handle before their human nature shows and they want more freedom or less order because humans are greedy and selfish creatures, that's a factor that must be considered when creating a society. Too much order and too much freedom both have one thing in common, the fall of a democracy. The conch in the story stands for the boys civilization and when it brakes it is Williams way of saying that the boys are no longer civil even in the slightest

Devil in the White City - Serial Killer Dr. H. H. Holmes

The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 was America's chance to eclipse the 1889 Exposition Universelle held in Paris that had wounded the pride of our nation. With the entire world watching, endless opportunities were available to engage the impossible. One man used the opportunity the World's Fair presented to build a city that could make America proud. Another used it's eminence to help him become one of the most feared serial-killers of the time. These two men, "their fates were linked by a single, magical event" (xi). They represent Chicago as a black and white city; a clash between good and evil. The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic and Madness at the Fair That Changed America by Erik Larson captures the story of these two very different men in a profound and interesting way. The Exposition held in Paris a few years prior unveiled the Eiffel Tower, possibly the most remarkable landmark of the time. In order to prove itself, America had to create a fair that would at least equal this engineering marvel. The first of the t

In the end, Huck goes against civilization's views on slavery, and instead follows his heart; helping Jim to

Keeping Illegal Drugs Illegal

Similarly as with most subjects of level headed discussion, the issue of whether to authorize medicates or not regularly takes its turn at all important focal point. While advocates of the sanctioning of medications may battle that particular issues, for example, the likelihood of diminished levels of wrongdoing, or the lessening in expenses connected with policing and managing the medication scourge contend that the medication war is a losing fight, there are a lot of people more rivals that fight that utilization of medications, prompts the decimation of human character. Mulan and Confucianism

Confucianism is known as a religion, and one of the most important roles in ancient China. The Confucianism rules and teachings also known as filial piety came from Confucius. Women would always have a lower level of
