The Happy Meal Hoax

McDonald's has been using a strategy that many of us have overlooked which takes place in between everything McDonald's is know for. This strategy has been focused primarily on children as McDonald's sees them as future profit or free investments. McDonald's believe that by targeting children and attracting them to their company those children will grow up to be lifelong customers, thus making the McDonald's corporation more profitable in the future. For years, the fast food corporation has been targeting children using cartoon characters, toys, vibrant advertisement, and a "Play-place" in which Children can go frolic in colorful tubes, ball pits, and slides while they wait for their "Happy Meal" or after they have devoured it. These help and effectively paint a happy positive image of what is the corporation McDonald's. However, it is now common knowledge that McDonald's can be dangerous towards the health of children as the food served by these fast-food restauran

Women's Rights in the Middle East

About six years ago I was sitting in a doctors office waiting for my friends appointment to be over. When I picked up a magazine and started glancing over it and an article caught my eye. The article was written by Amnesty International, a group which tries to protect women particularly from cruel and inhuman abuse they endure all over the world. They believe that women have rights to equal protection and rights under the law and that they should receive the same equality as men and not be stereotyped for being women. By the time I finished reading this article I was stunned, and I will never forget what sickening things I read about honor killings of women and girls. Honor killings take place in Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Yemen, and Gaza, as well as other countries. Women and girls face death by s

Anthropomorphism in Modern Advertisements

Animals are a vital part of advertising. Businesses in every market utilize animals in their advertisements to help promote their goods, service, or reputation. According to Forbes, in the 2011 Super Bowl, when compared to advertisements with animals, the average non animal Super Bowl ad was 14% less effective, and advertisements containing celebrities were 21% less effective (Forbes). An example of animals being used to market a product is Chick-Fil-As The Cow Campaign. The Cow Campaign applies anthropomorphism, assigning human traits and behaviors, to the cows themselves in order to form an emotional connection. However there are severe social consequences in doing so (Horowitz). Anthropomorphism can be seen throughout human history. Many experts believe that anthropomorphism is a perpetual instinctual trait that all humans possess (Philip Zimbardo) . In the fifth century B.C, the Greek Philosopher Xenophanes gave the first critique of anthropomorphism (BELIEVE religious information

Malcolm X and Coming of Age in Mississippi

While black Americans were technically freed from the bonds of slavery with the Thirteenth Amendment, given American citizenship with the Fourteenth Amendment, and guaranteed the right to vote with the Fifteenth Amendment, the reality of life for African Americans was marred with slavery to whites due to poverty, second-rate citizenship and the denial of voting rights throughout the twentieth century. While blacks and whites had an antiquated and hate-filled relationship, the relationship between individuals within the black community was often wrought with tension and conflicts. Coming of Age in Mississippi is an autobiographical novel by Anne Moody that chronicles her life as the daughter of sharecroppers in rural Mississippi. The novel follows Annes struggles with poverty and racism and her eventual growth into a black activist at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is an autobiographical novel by Malcolm X, originally Malcolm Little, which fol

Capitalist Economy System

Inflationary window is a dangerous critical point in the capitalist economy system. When the economy approaches the inflationary window, it means there has been a lack of coordination and cooperation between private and public sectors. If the inflationary window left unchecked, it will cause crowding out effect and crowding out will cause inflation. In order to counter the trend, the government and Federal Reserve could use fiscal and monetary policies to intervene the economy. During a boom, employment levels are high and people have excessive money to spend. And government should step back and let the private sector do whatever they want to do. However, if both government and private sector act actively (both sectors spend excessive money in the market), the price of goods and services will increase. If the government decided to print more money or borrow to spend, it will cause inflation. The inflationary window is the point right before the peak in the Keyness business cycle. When

The Purpose and Plan of Affirmative Action

The purpose of affirmative action is to provide equal educational opportunities for all minorities, but is this program fair to everyone? Affirmative action was first introduced in the 1960s by President John F. Kennedy in attempt at fighting discrimination during the Civil Rights movement. The term was later enforced by President Johnson when he signed the Executive Order 11246 in 1965. This order primarily focused on providing jobs and education for minorities. For many years, it has been argued whether affirmative action violates the 14th Amendments equal protection clause, which provides equal protection of the laws for all citizens. Although affirmative action was intended to be a temporary aid to ensure equal opportunities for minorities, it has evolved into a system that simply contributes to the racial hostility in present day society. The 14th Amendment states that all people born or naturalized in the United States are entitled to equal protection of the laws. In the 1896

Writing Readable Prose

Writing is a mysterious art. It is quite enchanting how the black and white writings can contain so many colors, and captivates peoples heart in way there no being free from it. Despite literature having such a big effect on peoples life no one really knows for sure how to write anything effectively that will serve its purpose as literature. In the end it comes down to individual skills. And for that reason different opinions arise. For example where George Orwell believes being able to write good literature is a cumulative process, where Anne Lamott things it of as a more isolated process. Orwell believes as a writers life experience, writing experience builds up he or she will write even better. On the other hand, Anne Lamott believes almost anyone can write well if the proper steps are taken. One thing that is common between the two writers is both of them insists on writing what comes to mind, at least to some level. Lamott is more open minded in that matter. She likes to write wha

America, Immigration and Big Business

The growth of the American economy is due to many factors. The first being Big Buisness that brought about many big corportations; that provided mass employment to the American people. The second being Technological advances which brought about development in many industries and made them more efficent. Finally the third factor is Mass immigration, which brought with it a massive low paid workforce. Big buisness was a big factor in the growth in the American economy but mass immigration was the biggest factor. Big business brought with it entrepuners like J.D Rockefeller and Carneigie, they built up massive corporations know as Rockefeller standard oil company and Carneigie steel company. They created massive profits and mass employment and this meant bigger input into the economy prompting its growth. This mass employment although couldnt of come with the small population of 62 million in the 1890 but instead these big buisnesses had a massi

The Value of Community Service

Have you ever wondered what it is like living in a homeless shelter, senior home or even an animal shelter? Well it can be very scary and even imprisoning. The people and animals who have no one to visit them and most likely spend their days sitting and doing nothing but what the people in charge of the facilities instruct them to and that has to be a rough lifestyle. The whole idea of working in a shelter is to help others and expect nothing in return. It's giving your time to make another's day just a little bit better and showing them there are people who care. The fact that community service is required really does nothing to prove that it is any less useful. It teaches kids that community service is an act of kindness and a good deed with more than one way in which to gain perspective on what others lives can be like on a daily basis, and that others have needs in which need to be met besides our own. Community service is an eye opening experience that being required to do makes i

Keynesian Model: Brazil

The economic model my country seems to be following is the Keynesian model. This UK collectivist model is, in some ways, laissez faire because there is some reliance on market forces and some reliance on state forces. According to Europa World, the Brazilian government began to assist manufacturing companies (EW), but a year later the goal of the government was to [attract] private investment in much-needed infrastructure projects (EW). This shows that even though there was government support the government pushed for private investment. With the Keynesian model there is also some signs of liberalism. In order for the people of Brazil to accumulate more for themselves, the gover

The Juvenile Delinquency System

During the 18th century the legislations that protect children did not exist. Children were tried and sentenced for crimes they committed and were even sometimes put to death. In the 19th century people reformed for a change in the way that juveniles were treated within the criminal justice system. The reformers who wanted this change believed that children were not fully developed and could not be held accountable for many of the things they did. They believed that children had to be separated from adults within the corrections system and held in specialized facilities (Krygier, 3). Juvenile courts were established during the 20th century (Krygier, 3). Juvenile delinquency is an issue that is taken very seriously by the criminal justice system. A juvenile delinquent is any person above the age of 7 and below 16 who commits an offense that would be a crime if committed by an adult. The juvenile justice system operates under the philosophy of parens patriae. They work for the best inte

Speaking and Writing in English

There are many differences in speaking and writing in the English language. A few examples may include speaking and writing professionally. These can help land a job, have professional conversations, or make speeches to the public. If you speak or write unprofessionally, it may have some negative impacts in your life. Anyone will use all of these at some point in their life and I will explain why. There are a few reasons why someone may speak professionally: you sound more mature, it makes you sound more intelligent, and it is something employers look for. If someone would receive an interview, and they showed up talking professionally, they have more of a chance of getting the job. Business owners want someone who can be reliable and talk to their customers in a professional way. If you were around someone who is a famous figure or someone like a mayor of a town, you do not want to sound unintelligent. It is very

Turkish Armenian Gradualization

Turkish-Armenian relations have been deadlocked since Armenia declared full independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991. The long history of a closed border and lack of concrete diplomacy between the two states has long impeded the process of normalization (Iskandaryan 37). However, the beginning of the 21st century, Turkish-Armenian relations have entered a new era with the restoration of the Akhtamar Church, demonstrations in Turkey after the deposition of Hrant Dink, Turkeys EU membership and most recently, the visit of Turkish president Abdullah Guls visit to Armenia in 2008 (Gorgulu 19). A new era in the Turkish-Armenian relation has begun, which until recently has been blocked due to the historical tension between the two states. Although in present day Armenia and Turkey, post opening of the border, a mutual relationship of both nations will be a difficult process but will lead to an ultimate normalization between them. Without biases, blame cannot be placed on on

DNA Fingerprinting - Polymerase Chain Reaction

Analysing DNA from samples of body fluids or body tissue in order to identify individuals is referred to as DNA fingerprinting. This technique is used to compare the nucleotide sequences of fragments of DNA from different sources. DNA fingerprinting is often used to provide evidence in criminal investigations. These "fingerprints" are not visible to a naked eye or even to a scanning electron microscope and cannot be altered once left at a crime scene. Therefore it has been argued that DNA fingerprinting is the greatest forensic tool in the history of forensic science. DNA fingerprinting has been applied in different criminal law cases, paternity tests and to detect certain genetic diseases. The two methods used to analyse DNA are Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). The amount of a sample needed to test the DNA is a distinguishing factor between RFLP and PCR. RFLP is effective when there is a sufficiently large sample of DNA w

Overview of Marx's Philosophical Theories

Karl Marx, a German philosopher and revolutionary socialist, believed that capitalism could be reformed and that inequality and exploitation of the working class should be abolished. In 1844, Marx wrote and published "The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844," better known as "The Paris Manuscripts" and then later in 1848 published "The Communist Manifesto." In these works, Marx argued that the strong relationship between capitalism and alienation was a result of the new struggle formed between the bourgeoisie and proletariat classes. Due to the problems caused by alienation and exploitation, Marx introduced the idea of socialism, that which he believed was a society that served the individual needs of man. Capitalism: Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership of the means of production. Commodities are an important measure of capitalism because the economy is based on the accumulations of such items. Commodities are simply obje

Tupac - From Struggles to Success

"Did [you] hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?" (Shakur, Tupac 3). These are words from Tupac, an American actor, dancer, poet, and rap icon. From the second he was born on June 16, 1971, he was destined for failure. Tupac was the rose. Born and raised in East Harlem, Tupac had many struggles. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was an active member of the Black Panther movement, she was pregnant with Tupac while she was imprisoned for participating in riots ( Edwards " From Poetry to Rap: The Lyrics of Tupac Shakur"). Irish Politics in the Poetry of Yeats

The two poems written by W. B. Yeats during the revolutionary time of Ireland is based on two riots and reveals patriotism. In the poems Yeats admires the sacrifice of the revolutionaries and yearns for a new Ireland. Revolution! Romantic? The two poems portray two riots in the recent history of Ireland. "September 1913" was probably inspired by the Dublin Lockout of 1913 in which the workers in Dublin went on strike to stand against their employers as a result of the conflict between the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU) established by James Larkin and the Dublin Employers' Federation led by William Martin Murphy (Dorney). Larkin demanded better wages and working environment for the workers through strikes (Dorney). Murphy and his supporters decided to sack ITGWU members in response to the dispute (Dorney). In late August 1913 Larkin called a strike on a tramway company to fight for the right of the sacked workers. Murphy had his federation sack other worke

The Feminist Movement

According to Bell Hooks, "Feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression." To expand upon this quote, oppression means that one may not have the same opportunities as others may. During the 1960's, men were expected to portray a more masculine, aggressive identity. Females were expected to portray a more feminine and compassionate identity. These expectations led to male dominance in society. The feminist, as Bell Hooks states, worked and continues to work to put an end to patriarchal society patterns. In the beginning of the 1960's, it was made clear that there was male dominance in society. That means that males would receive the higher paying jobs regardless of abilities--hiring came down to gender. Males ended up receiving a more enticing pay check and with that came power. In the 1960's the world for many women was limited. It was expected for a woman to marry in her early 20's, start a family, and commit her life to homemaking. Husbands would take

Women's Roles in China and Western Europe

The role of Women in China and Western Europe was both similar and different. Both places looked at women to be subordinate to men. Women did not take part in politics, and were to stay in the home to care for the children. In China, if Neo-Confucianism was practiced by the woman, foot binding was a standard practice, that bound the woman to the home. In Western Europe there was a similar practice, but the women only wore tight corsets, limiting their movement. In Western Europe there were many feminist movements that occurred. In China, having baby girls was seen as a bad thing, so infanticide was practiced. In China, women were treated horribly, especially after the adaptation of Neo-Confucianism. Neo-Confucianism was the rebirth of Confucianism, and was taken up by parts of the Chinese Population. In Neo-Confucianism, it was believed that women be bound to the home, so thats what they did. They used

Samuel Beckett - Waiting for Godot

The play Waiting for Godot written by the playwright Samuel Beckett dwells on the futility of human existence. Through the characters Vladimir and Estragon, Samuel Beckett addresses the fact that people find it difficult to get out of a predicament no matter how hard they try. This idea is best expressed by the line, "Nothing to be done" which is constantly repeated throughout the play (Act 1). But in spite this man continues to keep his hope alive as symbolized by the made up person named Godot. I believe that the play challenges my preconceived notion that life is still worth living in spite of the problems that I encounter every day. While it is true that every day is a struggle to improve our fortunes, it does not mean that things will always remain the same as thought of by Vladimir and Estragon. Though there are times that each one of us would like to give up and move on, there is something deep i

Government and the Two Party System

Despite the fact the founding fathers advised contrary to the establishment of political factions as the Constitution withstood the ratification process, a rift amongst men in President George Washington's cabinet instituted the move toward the conception of political party. During the time period between 1791 and 1833, a two-party system had begun that demonstrated the philosophy of the Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. Although these two political groups were unyielding in their original ideas and beliefs, both had to change a few of their initial standpoints on numerous topics as they dealt with the truth of the government. America's first president, George Washington, assembled some of the finest political thinkers of the era in his group of advisers, often referred to as the presidential cabinet. Two members of the cabinet, Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury, and Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State, shortly found themselves competing with each other on many asp

Methylone and Other Party Drugs

Substances like 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine (MDMA, better known as ecstasy), cocaine, methamphetamine, and d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD/acid) have been identified as party drugs because of their link to club and partying culture among young adults and teenagers. All of these drugs are considered being stimulants which is a class of psychoactive drugs. All our thoughts, actions, memories, and behaviors result from biochemical interactions that take place in and between neurons. Drugs that affect these processes are, in general, called psychoactive drugs.1 By altering our neurotransmitters these psychoactive drugs could elevate mood, increase feelings of well-being, amplify energy, and along with heighten alertness to surrounding elements. Based on their ability to produce a state of euphoria for the users, they are commonly referred to as "uppers". All of the psychoactive drugs listed above are labeled as illegal stimulants under different controlled substances

Lives of the Saints and A Walk to Remember

Oscar Wilde once said, "Behind every exquisite thing that existed, there was something tragic." This beautiful life lesson is clearly seen in the novels Lives of the Saints and A Walk to Remember.
