Oedipus & Jocasta - Fate or Punishment?

If you were born into an African-American family in the early 1900's, your fate was slavery. You spent all day, sunrise to sunset, picking cotton in the fields. You were controlled by your owners and they decided how you would spend your day. No matter how hard you tried to change where you were or what you were doing, slavery was your lifestyle. Some slaves were punished for wrongs that weren't their own; whipped until they bled or received no food for the week, nearly starving to death. All because of the color of their skin. But what if their skin was white? What if they were born into a southern, upper-class family where they had three home-cooked meals a day along with the opportunity to earn an education. It's safe to say that their fate would have been much different. They wouldn't have been punished because of what they were born into, very similar to the tragic story of Oedipus the King. The King and his wife, Jocasta, received punishments that I believe did not fit their "cri

Bradley states that the photograph was a sign of "victory and hope ". Americans became consumed with the feeling that they needed to know the story behind it. A wave of pride dispersed amongst Americans, causing the photograph's sales to rise as people wanted to own it themselves. So, the famous photograph grew in popularity as newspapers used it as a cover photo. After the war ended, the three surviving flag raisers were fawned over by media, in turn emotionally and physically damaging their lives. John Bradley refused to speak about the flag raising or any other part of World War II, attempting to fend off the media his whole life. Jame

The Global Influence of China

Back during the 1600's China was not only referred to as the Han but also as the Middle Kingdom, and to the Mongols "The Crown Jewel ". China was very power hungry and wanted to gain control of the "barbaric " countries surrounding it to ensure that there were no chances of invasion or attack. China attempted to invade not only Korea but Vietnam and Japan as well. Although some attempts were successful for a little while, each country eventually drove them out. However that did not mean much, because China still played a large role in influencing the culture of each of these countries. Being so geographically close to China, there was no way that Korea would not be influenced in some way by their (The Chinese) culture. Korea maintained a link with China through a system of trading goods and ideas which came about under the Silla rule. However since China saw themselves as the "Middle Kingdom " they thought had no need for outsider's ideas. So the trading of ideas was one sided coming o

Teamwork in a Social Care Setting

A team is a collection of like-thinking people who work together to achieve common objectives. Teams consist of individuals, each with their own set of skills, abilities and experience. A team requires all of its members to be fully committed to the task at hand and to create synergy, which is when a team works in harmony, stimulating a greater performance to achieve the best possible outcome. "To be really effective, team members need effective leadership that encourages and supports them to feel like a team, to think like a team and to act like a team." (Miller, 2005) As described by Kohn et al (2000, p. 198) "People make fewer errors when they work in teams. When processes are planned and standardized, each member knows his or her responsibilities as well as those of teammates, and members "look out" for one another, noticing errors before they cause an accident." This is especially important in a care setting as errors affect the health and safety of

Giving Myself Up by Mark Strand

Mark Strand's poem "Giving Myself Up" illustrates the surrendering of one's senses and self-identity in order to "[begin] again without anything". The speaker attempts to be impersonal while expressing trepidations that are most certainly personal. The speaker lists over a dozen items that he "gives up", parts of his body as well as his "smell" and "clothes." These items, both tangible and abstract, represent the degree of discontent that the speaker is dealing with internally, as well as the speaker's denunciation towards himself both physically and mentally. Strand's use of metaphors comparing the speaker's body parts and other attributes to elements associated with negative connotations expresses the lack of fulfillment the speaker possesses, and Strand's use of repetition reflects the intense desire to renounce and surrender everything related to the speaker's self in order to create a new identity, an identity that will fulfill the

Stereotyping Feminists

Most people associate feminism with being a lesbian. This is only because being a lesbian and being a feminist are both known around America for "hating" men. This hasty judgment of the feminist of America has hindered the "Real" feminist from making any change in America today. Also because these stereotypes feminist now have to prove to not only men but also to fellow women that they just want to help in the fight of equality. It also doesn't help that the media only focus on the radical feminist. The stereotypes of feminism are hurting feminist movement and are completely untrue. Even though the TV or internet won't show the people the complete truth. Feminist are more the just the stereotypes that are portrayed across America. People thinking feminist are all lesbians isn't the only stereotype feminism have gotten through the years. The stereotypes have gotten so outrageous that they have made their way to Tumblr. A&P - Freedom and Free Will

It is often said that America is the land of the free. While its citizens are entitled to a life of free will, they must also remember that they must be responsible for the actions of their free will. This is a common element in many American pieces, especially A&P by John Updike and Love in La by Dagoberto Gilb. While the short stories A and P and Love in La have two very distinct plot lines and characters, it is through their themes of choice and consequences that a common ground is found between the two. By analyzing the stories individually one will be able to see multiple themes such as freedom and free will but most notably choice and consequence. In the short story A&P by John Updike the main protagonist, a young worker at the local grocery store encounters three pretty girls that gain notoriety throughout the store because of their attire. Their outfits are bikinis and this causes uncomfortableness throughout the store and even prompting a harsh exchange between the manager.

Walmart and the American Economy

People wish for an American economy that does not exist, where streets are filled with mom and pop shops, and milkshakes only costs 50 cents, but you can't blame any corporation for low costs, low goods state the world is in right now. People generally remember a period shortly after World War II when America led the world to manufacturing, where some (most) American companies made their products right in the comfort of their hometown, and quality products had no rivals. This is definitely not what our world looks like today. Today there is global competition, cheap labor, manufacturing overseas, and consumer demand for cheaper goods being "cheap over anything else". Walmart fills a lot of these demands for America, with an American company that provides jobs for over 2 million people a year. Employing so many workers helps keep down prices and inflation for over 300 million Americans. If Wal-Mart did not exist, its place in the economic world would be taken over by a diff

Analysis of Plagiarism

According to Deborah R. Gerhardt, plagiarizing has become a major issue amongst students due to insufficient knowledge of what constitutes as plagiarism. Coming out of high school, many students have a general grasp of plagiarizing. More attention is put towards how to correctly cite credible sources without fully explaining other forms of plagiarism. Gerhardt writes about a young author, Kaavya Viswanathan, who had plagiarized another author's work unknowingly. This tends to happen due to a student's lack of critically reflecting and assessing information they find online. Gerhardt's technique is effective because she uses analogies that can be better understood by most people to compare how important it is to understand the complexities of plagiarism. For example, she talks about how in college basketball there is not a short orientation where the rules of the game are learned all at once but instead the players are taught repeatedly about the rules of the game and as student athletes. She believes that the

Issues of Same Sex Marriage

"Ethics uses reason and experience to determine what is good and bad " (MacKinnon, 2013, p. 5) and the ethical implications of same-sex marriage often will depend on whom you ask and what their beliefs and values are. "According to the New York Times, only 56% of Americans are married today and even more surprising, only 26% of all households are the traditional married-couple-with-children homes. The best research data suggests that 5% of the population is gay (Santa Carla University, 2014). Same-sex marriage is an issue that stands to rip apart some societies at its seams. This essay will explore the implications of same-sex marriage and how others have expressed moral judgments, as well as

Sociology of Education

With the expansion of education over the last twentieth century, more American's have had access to schooling. Recently, educational attainment is increasingly shaped by many aspects of American lives and the more and less educated have moved apart in income, wealth, and family life. Therefore the surge in education has led to a separation in who has access to education as well as the different levels of education. Due to educational disparities brought on by social class and income, as well as race, gender, stratification, and socioeconomic factors and economic returns on education, the U.S. education system continues to be a vehicle for social reproduction instead of mobility. As exemplified by Durkheim, education has consisted of both a civic and vocational role over the past century. The function of education has been to socialize and integrate individuals into a larger society, all while acting as a moral authority and making schools critical to society (Durkheim 2007). Making Ethical Decisions

Someone once said "There are lots of people shaping decisions, and so if we want to predict correctly, we have to pay attention to everybody who is trying to shape the outcome, not just the people at the pinnacle of the decision-making ". This quote means that in life you're always going to have decisions that have to be made and if you listen to the wrong people point of views you might end up in situations that you never expected to be in. This can be proven in many different scenarios that you're bound to face as you progress through life. I will tell you a personal experience that I had. What would you do if you were forced to decide to either let the entire school down including a best friend ,or to stay true to your beliefs and morals? Maybe I should start at the beginning of my ethical decision before I ask questions. I had a friend named Michael who was a very humble and respected person, who also happened to be the star basketball player. I always knew he was struggling wit
