Summary of Underage Drinking

The minimum legal drinking age in the U.S. should be lowered to eighteen years old. The definition of 'adult' is simply a number. In the United States, the age one becomes an adult is eighteen years old. At 18, you can sign up for the armed forces, tattoo your own body, buy a firearm, and purchase prescription narcotics. So why not a natural drink in moderation? An argument might be that 'kids,' or those under 18 are not responsible enough to drink in moderation. This may be so, but why then, can you drive a car at sixteen? An even more dangerous practice than consuming alcohol? When the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st in 1933, the 'drinking age,' was not an issue of importance. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 set a more intense regulation on the purchase and consumption of alcohol, where the majority

Summary: Of Mice and Men

Of Mice and Men is a very touching story about two friends trying to make it in the world. This book involves a lot of difficult conflicts to deal with. Of Mice and Men was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. This interesting story takes place during the 1930s on a ranch in the Salinas Valley in California. George and Lennie are two men just looking for a job. The two became very close and George feels as if he needs to look out for Lennie. Lennie isn't all there. He has the mentality of a child. This is why they are looking for more work, they had got run out of their last job because of Lennie. George truly does care about Lennie. Even though Lennie does several things that makes George mad throughout the story, George still stands by his side. To me, that's a great person. When times got tough, he didn't just kick Lennie to the curb and say "figure it out yourself." He was always there. Not a lot of people are not patient enough to deal with those types of situations. This is Not the World for Me

Growing up I was not raised to notice skin color or to a judge a person because of their background. So, I did not think twice when I fell in love with a man of a different race, skin color and background then myself. All three of my children are biracial and I am doing my best to raise them the way that I was. Except, I never realized racism still existed until people in public started treating us differently. God created everyone different for a reason and it is time that we start treating people equally. Even though I am white, I experience racism almost everyday of my life. All three of my children are mixed, black and white. I am constantly asked what race they are or how can I handle doing their hair everyday. I've even had people ask my why I wanted to have black children instead of white children. My daughters are even treated different by their peers. Children their own age ask why they look different. My daughters have even been called derogatory words by children their own

Decriminalization and Legalization of Prostitution

ABSTRACT When looking at the possibility of decriminalizing prostitution, many arguments are presented. Some researchers argue that prostitution is harmful and therefore shouldn't be legal. [Moe12] Others hold that the legalization or decriminalization of prostitution would actually be beneficial and lower the amount of violence that occurs as a result of illegal prostitution. [Wei06] The Christian's and radical feminist have come together in an attempt to prevent the legalization of prostitution. They argue that prostitution degrades women and reduces them to nothing but objects for sex. [Wei06] Other researchers believe that it is all about the language used when discussing prostitution that determines the outcome of legislation on the subject. [Nie10] This literature will review all of these arguments for and against prostitution. One of the main arguments against legalizing prostitution is that it leads to psychological problems which make it harmful. [Moe12] There was psychol

To analyse the internal business environment, the SWOT tool will be used. " A business firm does not operate in a vacuum but in a given environment, and has to interact and transact its business within this environment" (Fernando, 2011, p3

John Steinbeck - The Pearl

There are many qualities to great pieces of literacy. Two of these qualities are deep feeling for nature and a profound sympathy for people. American writer John Steinbeck utilizes these qualities to create stories with intense and ironic plots, creating characters that struggle to live even under the most brutal conditions and that are moved by forces they can hardly understand or control. His parable, "The Pearl", is one such story that clearly demonstrates the utilization of these qualities. The qualities are revealed when Kino finds the pearl, when Kino retaliates against the trackers, and when the couple returns to La Paz. In the beginning, Kino rows out to the Gulf on his canoe, which Kino's and his family's survival depended on. He regularly goes out to the Gulf to acquire food and in rare occasions, pearls. "He hooked his foot in the loop on his rock and his hands worked quickly, tearing the oysters loose, some single, others in clusters" (Steinbeck 833). This quote shows Kino diving at the oysters to find a pearl. Kino doe

The Mind and Body Problem

The mind is phenomenal assets to our lives to the point were in our mind the things we see and hear about is recollected as if it was real. The mind body problem is the perception on reality and whether this reality is truly real or is just the mind playing tricks. People can become skeptical unless proven by science. The problem is whether or not knowledge actually exists and if his knowledge is actually true. Plato states that the real knowledge exists in the World of Being but when the soul shifts to the World of Becoming it is no longer pure and becomes contaminated. These contaminations are due to the fact of the senses. The senses are just an effect that we perceive the world by. Rationalism is the knowledge is acquired through reason. Plato believed this knowledge is a part of the World of Being therefore the World of being exists. The soul cannot have knowledge, for knowledge is a tool that is taught

Unbearable Lightness of Being - Misunderstood Words

Kundera uses misunderstood words to show a little more clearly why the characters had the types of interactions they had in the novels. It seems that Kundera is trying to put focus on how two different lifestyles could alter the meanings of otherwise simple-to-define words. Rather, each character has different connotations when it comes to words, straying from their intended denotation. Using her musical style of writing, it can be explained that when people meet up too late in life, their life's "compositions" are already written, so their motifs don't harmonize. This is demonstrated through the relationships between Tomas and Tereza, working in harmony, and Franz and Sabina, working in discord. Focusing on the relationship between Franz and Sabina,

Emotional Appeal and Critical Thinking

Emotional appeal is when a person uses the manipulation of the recipients emotions, rather than valid logic to win an argument. This happens to be a bad or weak way of making of making an objective argument. For example, a debater attempts to win an argument by trying to get an emotional reaction from opponent and audience. Emotional appeals are considered fallacies, because they manipulate emotions in an audience. I myself am vulnerable to emotional appeals especially when it comes to advertising. For example, when I see a Nike advertisement I will feel the need to purchase the latest of the products advertised by them. Nike advertises thier product as if their products or goods are the best in the market, most comfortable and in trend too. They make feel satisfied and happy when I purchase an

Hong Kong in America

In the news, the people of Hong Kong haven't been treated well by their so called democracy. According to Boston Globe, The people demand for more democracy, including the right to choose Hong Kong's political leaders without interference from Beijing. The Chinese government, for its part, wants to keep democratic demands in check and maintain some control over Hong Kong politics. Another issue at hand is that in 2017, the people of Hong Kong are supposed to gain the right to elect their own chief executive, the leader of Hong Kong. Last month, however, the Chinese government announced that all candidates would need to be pre-approved by a committee friendly to the Chinese Communist Party. What this means is that the people of Hong Kong want the current chief executive to resign, and they wa

Charles Strickland - The Moon and Sixpence

The main character of the novel, Charles Strickland, is a prosperous stockbroker. At the beginning of the book the reader sees him through the eyes of a young writer, the narrator of the novel: a very dull, quiet man, not in the least interested in literature or the arts(34), a typical broker. Then he was a man of forty, not good-looking, and yet not ugly, for his features were rather good, but they were all a little larger than life-size and the effect was ungainly. He was broad and heavy, with large hands and feet, and he wore his evening clothes clumsily. He was clean shaven, and hi large face looked uncomfortably naked. His hair was reddish, cut very short, and his eyes were small, blue or grey. He looked commonplace. (38) he had no social gifts, he had no eccentricity, he was just a good, dull, honest, plain man. He was null. He was probably a worthy member of society, a good husband and father, an honest broker, but there was no reason to waste one's time over him. (39) It was an

Rhetorical Essay: Flailing After Muslims

The Muslim community has been looked at differently comparing to other religions and ethnicities in America. Furthermore, after the 9/11 tragedies, Americans felt as if they had more of a reason to pick on the Muslim community. In the book called Argument by Seyler Gooch, there is an article of the name "Flailing after Muslims" by Bob Herbert. According to New York Times, Herbert is a journalist for them. His main topic that he wrote about was politics, which makes him a credible author for this article. In this article, A Republican from Long Island and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee named Peter King decided to have committee hearings because he believed the Muslim community was threatening America with terrorist plots. Herbert's point in this article is King's investigations on the Muslim community violates American principles. Herbert achieved this effective argument and convinced his audience with rhetorical devices such as emotional, logical, ethical appeals

Unlikely Victory by Thomas Fleming

In Unlikely Victory, Thomas Fleming talks about thirteen different scenarios where the Americas could have lost the Revolution. It is truly amazing how if one little thing had gone differently how different history would be. In Unlikely Victory there are a certain four ways that have stood out to me personally. One of them is what would have happened if Washington's army hadn't gotten away to Manhattan Island and the British had trapped them. Another one is what would have been different if Captain Ferguson had shot Washington. The third is the scenario that Daniel Morgan would have lost at Cowpens. Lastly, the scenario that British's plan had worked at Bunker Hill. The first scenario that stood out to me was the one where Washington's army hadn't got away to Manhattan Island. At the battle of Long Island Washington's army of about ten thousand men went against the British's army of about thirty thousand men. The British "devised a flanking strategy" (Fleming 164) that left

Native American and European Interactions

From the discovery of the New World to the developing colonies in North America, the newcomers and the indigenous people benefitted each other by their cultural traditions, but were also weakened by the development of wars, diseases, and political conflicts. These factors would forever affect the lives of the natives and the lives of the colonists. For the natural instinct humans have for trade, many of the indigenous people traded freely when the Europeans arrived. Trade, for the Indians, was meant to create a friendly bond with the European traders. When the first European item was traded with an Indian's, word of the never before seen item quickly spread throughout North America, and most Indian's wanted these "impressive new technologies", (Calloway). They were increasingly interested in a common European lifestyle that included furniture, clothes, tools, and other household items. Not only the Indians were fascinated by the items, it also made their lives easier. Europe

Koreatown and Housing

Abstract Koreatown, an area in Los Angeles with a history of gangs and crime, presently faces economic, income, and residential changes and developments. Studying these changes can see how and why such significant changes are happening in a formerly crime ridden area. These changes are not strictly in the workings of urban development, but more in the process of gentrification. In this essay, I will look at elements of Koreatown's economic restructuring, housing, its and its mixed income characteristics, arguing that the region finds itself in the early stages of gentrification. By studying the region, we see how Koreatown's economic growth led it to having a variety of professional businesses and offices, upscale malls, karaoke clubs, and bars, pulling more upper and middle income people to the area. This can explain why property values of formerly cheap housing have risen. Like the new mixed businesses in the area, Koreatown's mixed income and income disparity reflects the inward mov

Sports - Sittin' in the Bleachers

Everybody is different when it comes to sports, some like to play the sport and some like to just sit back and watch; my personal preference is to play on the team instead of watch the game. I have played sports my whole life, but I have also been a spectator when it came to a sporting event. When I played on a sports team I had to spend many hours preparing and practicing before game day. Playing more than one sport takes more hours of dedication, practice, and sacrifice than one would have to do if they only played one sport. In basketball I had to practice every day and sacrifice holidays so I could go play in a dreaded holiday tournament and in softball I had to sacrifice Saturdays for weekend tournaments. Even though sacrificing the fun things seemed to be awful it all payed off in the end. Going to holiday tournaments and sacrificing every Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Easter break is just pr

The Upanishads: The Aitareya Evaluated

The Upanishads: The Aitareya Evaluated After some consideration, I Have decided to write this paper on the Aitareya Upanishad. I have looked at them all briefly, and it seems to be one of the shortest and clearest ones. However, this is not the whole reason I have decided to write a paper on it. I chose this one because it speaks of the process of creation, which has always been a great interest of mine. It has three chapters, and thirty-three verses, which I suspect was intentional. Perhaps repetition of numbers held some meaning? The three chapters all touch on different subjects. The first chapter has multiple subjects, including the creation of the "worlds", the process of the creation of humanity, and the creation of food. Relating to the first portion of the chapter, I don't understand why the text uses the word "worlds" to mean the various portions of

The Evolution of Macbeth

Macbeth is presented as being disloyal. For example, he says "Stars hide your fires, let not see my black and deep desires". This suggests that Macbeth wants to hide his true evil intentions from both others and himself, he knows that murdering a king is wrong but he's trying not to tell himself that. You can see here his loyalty starts to waver. Macbeth is presented as a war hero. The Wounded Captain describes how brave Macbeth was while slaying the enemy. The captain says "For brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name" During the battle against Norway, Macbeth proved his loyalty to King Duncan and his bravery by slaying his enemies. Fighting bravely for your country was seen as a great sign of loyalty. Macbeth starts to consider murder however at this point he still has a conscience so he's weighing up the pros and cons. He says" If it were done when 'tis done then twere well if it were done quickly" Macbeth contemplates the murder of Duncan howev

Social Commentary - Struggling with Depression

"OMG you're so retarded!" "Ugh. I'm so depressed." "Dude. I swear I'm like bipolar sometimes." Sound like the white girls on your Twitter feed? How much do you want to bet that none of them are actually mentally ill? Retarded. Bipolar. Schizo. OCD. These words are thrown around without a single thought to what they really mean. Kind of like the word "literally" (aka something else the white girls on your Twitter feed say at least twice per sentence). Too many times, I see or hear people talk about mental illnesses like they're common emotions. Well, guess what? They're not. They're serious issues that should be taken seriously. The problem is that too many times, people learn the symptoms of a mental disorder and assume that if somebody exhibits any those symptoms, that automatically means that they have that mental disorder. Because clearly, if I'm bothered by your crooked picture and go to fix it, I have OCD. And I'm sorry, but just because you're sad that your pumpkin spice latte ha

My Adoption from Bulgaria

I always think about weather I am blessed or if I am just lucky. I was adopted from a different country when I was only two. I do not know much about where I came from. I find myself occasionally wondering who my real parents were. My dad could have been a police officer or maybe my mom was a teacher. Where do my looks come from, could I have inherited my mother's eyes or maybe my father's hair color? I sometimes wonder where my biological parents are today; do I really want to know though? I was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, a country surrounded by Romania, Turkey, Greece, Mace and the Black Sea. I was adopted because my mother could not have children, after trying and trying, still no hope. But I am not complaining. I understand why I was adopted, but why in a different country? Well, my dad thought it would be better to adopt in a different country so there would not be a
