Medicaid Expansion - Ramifications for Missouri

Summary Missouri continues to debate the expansion of the Medicaid program. Review of available data was consistent and supportive of the plan to move forward and while debate continues across partisan lines, little quantifiable information is identified that does not support expanding. After reviewing the University of Missouri, School of Medicine's detailed analysis and various state and nonprofit evaluations, the conclusion is that Missouri stands to gain economically by moving forward with expansion. There are identified areas where additional analysis would be valuable in determining actual net gains and losses. Based on the current available data, failure to expand Missouri's Medicaid will result in immediate and long term financial strain due to loss of increased federal funding, the reduction in the disproportionate share hospital (DSH) payments for uncompensated care built and increased unemployment resulting from this reduction. Introduction Under the Patient Protection and

Eligibility of Jews for Citizenship - December 23, 1789

On December 23, 1789 Count Stanislas of Clermont-Tonnere gave a speech to the French Constituent National Assembly that sparked a subsequent debate on the right of citizenship for Jews and members of certain professions. In The French National Assembly: Debate on the Eligibility of Jews for Citizenship he elaborates specifically on many of his points concerning the Jews, but neglects mentioning the specific offended professions he enumerated in his initial speech. Monsieur Clermont-Tonnere primarily appeals to the idea that the adherents of Judaism are not fundamentally undeserving of French citizenship and that the ideals of the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen should apply universally to all men as it should have been intended. This document also presents a contrasting speech giving by Anne-Lois de la Fare. Monsieur de la Fare was the bishop of the city of Nancy, France; he gives the argument that French citizenship cannot be conferred primarily because not only would it harm France but it would harm the Jews themselves as well. What both Messieurs Clermonte-Tonnerre and de la Fare do agree on is that

Augustine's Understanding of God

Saint Augustine's intellectual and spiritual journey to understanding God was influenced by philosophical tendencies, Biblical Scriptures and personal experiences. Since Augustine did not believe any of these viewpoints completely, he spent most of his life searching for other types of truths that would resolve his doubts. Augustine went through a dark intellectual period in his life, in which he was sinful and lustful. During this time, he believed that God existed but was too weak to give up all of the pleasures to live the life of a Christian. Throughout his life, Augustine pursued many arguments, like Neo Platonism and Manichaeism, which led him to understand his true views about God. Ultimately, he recognized and converted to the truth of Christianity, and was able to find God. During his early life and adolescence, Augustine committed selfish sins of the flesh, and therefore disregarded God's law. These acts were due to a misdirection of God's gifts, which is what most people do

The 1920's and The Great Gatsby

The 1920's and The Great Gatsby The Jazz Age and the Roaring 20's are just a couple of the names coined for this interesting era of increased pleasure and changing attitudes that redefined a still young nation. Being pulled into one if not the greatest wars of all time began a journey for America. During the war thousands of people endured great hardship and misery. The nation was concentrating on war not fun. Upon the return of the soldiers people wanted some relief and enjoyment. This feeling came through the revolutionary attitudes of the 1920's. Though the war was grave it triggered a command over how America would forever be influenced. Prosperity created a new found culture dominated by material objects and position in society coupled with the help of many outlandishly extravagant parties. Much of the nation began to further itself from its once ruling moral values and embarked on a journey of self interest and financial success. No one novel or one man for that matter

Dubliners by James Joyce

As famous American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway once said, "It [is] easier to live under a regime than fight it. " Hemingway is saying here that living the controlled life is easier than living the adventurous life. In Dubliners by James Joyce, we venture into the lives of four subjugated individuals living in the city of Dublin, Ireland. The people in these stories each have different regimes in which they live by. However, their longing for adventure sparks epiphanies in their minds as they realize that their lives thus far had been monotonous. Through these interpretations of life, Joyce articulates a culture of paralysis to the reader; he expresses this paralytic culture by showing the oppressive influence Ireland has over Little Chandler, and James Duffy, the contradictions of duties to family and to self in Eveline, and the self-consciousness the past creates in Gabriel Conroy. In order to understand what is oppressing these characters, it is important to first descr

Nuclear Energy and Environmental Issues

There are two basic groups of energy: renewable energy, such as solar power, and nonrenewable energy, such as fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Three quarters of the world's energy is generated by burning fossil fuels. " [55I12] When it comes to the topic of energy, most would agree that daily function depends on energy. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what energy sources countries should use. Whereas some are convinced that nuclear energy can create dangerous outcomes, others maintain that countries across the globe are turning their reliance to more nuclear energy and less dependence on alternative energy sources. Governments are turning to nuclear energy for various reasons to reach their energy needs and how much they should depend on nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is when uranium atoms are split, causing a net loss of mass that actually transforms into large amounts of energy, in a process known as fission[Nuc13]. Nuclear energy use contains

USPS - United States Postal Service

The USPS is an organization that has been around longer than anyone that is currently living in the United States. More than two centuries ago the Postal Service started. Now there are some people who think that the USPS needs to be changed or else do away with it completely. I am the kind of person who doesn't like change, but the USPS needs to change. Many ideas have been presented to make the Postal Service more efficient. Cutting Saturday delivery is a decent idea, and would save $40 billion over the next ten years (Source F); however, this would increase the workload that mail carriers would have on Mondays. I think that a good idea is to require postal workers that drive vehicles to drive eco-friendly cars. The Jeeps that most workers drive get around eleven miles to the gallon. My grandfather is a p

Frankenstein - Life is a Curse

Birth is a miracle, but in the case of Frankenstein's creature, this blessing of life is a curse. In the book Frankenstein, the protagonist Victor Frankenstein plays God by creating life with his own hands. Society portrays this creature as a horrid, bloodthirsty monster, and society refuses to accept him as a human being. Frankenstein, the creator, fails to take responsibility for what he created, and leaves the creature in mere desolation, almost like an orphan. Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, conveys the impression of the creature as a baby through her use of rhetorical devices, with the attempt to build pathos to evoke sympathy and contempt towards the protagonist. In the passage, Shelley relates the creature to an infant using sensory details, with the goal of creating sympathy and anger. Specifically, when the creature had awakened, "[he] felt cold and half frightened. " The creature is truly a baby. This demonstrates the feelings of a newborn when it wakes up cold, f

Comparison of Sunnis and Shias

La ilaha illa Allah Muhammad ur rasul Allah. This is the first pillar of Islam, the Shahada or the declaration of faith. The shahada translates in English to: There is no God other than Allah, and Muhammad is the last messenger of God (Zeno). Every Muslim, regardless of sect, must adhere to these words throughout their life. Islam emerged as one unified religion based upon the teachings of Prophet Muhammad that he received directly from Allah and his angels. During the Prophet's lifetime, he fought and remained driven to spread the message of Allah to the people. Prophet Muhammad's great courage and teachings won over many people resulting in a tremendous number of converts to Islam. In addition, he also brought many different communities together and formed a strong and powerful ummah, or Islamic community. However, the true test for the ummah came to light once the Prophet Muhammad died in 632 (Brown). The question of who would lead the community and succeed the Prophet is what caus

Puritan Values in Young Goodman Brown

Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a story of a man who sets off on a life changing journey where he sees the true picture of puritan values. This journey reveals him the corruption and disloyalty of public morality within his community. Hawthorne presents the hypocrisy of the puritans and their values as they were the one who always preached about constant self-examinations to see if they are sinners and unworthy of God's Grace. He showed a clear picture of how the respected, religious people in broad day light changes into evil in the darkness of the night. He critiqued the puritan values of following religion blindly so that one can end up in heaven and rather than understanding what the religion says and teaches, their concern was always in finding faults in others then looking what they were up to. They ignored the fact that everyman has two sides a good and bad, no matter how religious one becomes the bad sides always existed and when given a chance works to its fulles

Holocaust Denial Theory

The holocaust denial is a theory that basically insists that 6 million Jews weren't killed. "In fact, as a general rule Holocaust deniers claim that roughly around 300,000 to 1.5 million were killed (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum 1) ". Countless accounts have proved otherwise, in this essay I will choose to illustrate how beliefs of the holocaust deniers can be discredited with widely known evidence including the final plan, video and photographic evidence as well as first account testimonies. Stephan Atkins a writer insists"Deniers are usually anti semites whose only chance to ever have a chance at rehabilitation is, simply to deny the holocaust ever occurred since it stripped them of their legitimacy as a group. "(80). I will be mentioning some recognizable deniers such as David Irving, Robert Faurisson, and Ingrid Rimland who have dedicated a considerable amount of effort in supporting the holocaust denial. Through a considerable amount of recognized evidence I will explai

Michelle Nunn for US Senate

In Georgia, we have a long list of sociological issues and concepts that are yet to be addressed. Some of these sociological concepts are the high unemployment rate, the unending increase in taxes, and the standard of education. These are issues that affect every American and even me as an international student. This is why I have decided to vote for Michelle Nunn as the US Senator for Georgia on the fourth of November. Michelle Nunn is a democrat and the current CEO of Points of Light which was founded by the former President George H. W. Bush. Points of Light is one of the nation's largest volunteer organizations. I have observed Michelle Nunn through the media and I strongly believe that she is a woman determined to bring decorum to Washington. First and foremost, Michelle Nunn is determined to help create jobs for unemployed American's. She has spent twenty-six years of

Treaties Leading to War

After 4 years and an estimated 37 million people dead, 20 million people wounded World War I finally came to an end. World War I ended in November 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. How did the Treaty of Versailles help start World War II? The Versailles Treaty helped cause World War II by treating Germany harshly, and letting Germany has no response to the Treaty. This harsh treatment can be seen through military restrictions on Germany, economic reparations, and the war guilt clause. One way the Versailles Treaty treated Germany harshly was by putting military restrictions on them. Article 160 in the Treaty of Versailles when talking about Germany's army says, "The total number of military troops in Germany must not exceed one hundred thousand .The total effective strength of offic

Ordinary Lives in North Korea

I can honestly say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This is quite a statement for me to make, considering the fact that I absolutely hate reading most books. Overall, this book continually reminded me of George Orwell's 1984. I specifically remember how much I enjoyed Orwell's dystopian fantasy. These type of novels seem very realistic and likely to occur. Because of human nature's love of power, leaders misuse their power constantly. Even the United States represents some of the invasive aspects represented in both of these books. Nothing to Envy brought Orwell's fantasy to life by presenting an actual scenario of how government can become a total authority of people's daily lives. The fact that Orwell's prediction was written in 1949 is extremely fascinating to me. At this time, the independent dictatorship of North Korea was just beginning to organize itself. Orwell had no way of knowing exactly what would occur under a real-world dictatorship. Surprisingly, his prediction was e

Child Abuse - A Child Called It

A Child Called It Every child has a right to a safe childhood and a life free from violence. In the story called A Child Called It, David Pelzer was brutally beaten starved by his heartless, alcoholic, and unstable mother. Abused children not only experience the effects of the abuse in childhood, but it also becomes a lifelong battle in adulthood. Being abused causes problems with physical health, mental health and how people interact with others. Physical abuse is an injury intentionally caused upon a child by any person. Many times, physical abuse results from inappropriate or unnecessary physical punishment. A parent in anger may be unaware of the amount of force with which he or she attacks the child. In David's situation he was being punished with unnecessary physical discipline. He was full of scars and bruises, his punishments were too harsh. It was to the point where he was once stabbed on his stomach and had a dirty diaper rubbed on his face and was force to eat it. Due to the fact that his mother was so much stronger and bigger, he could've been severely injured or killed. David Pelzer experienced more physic

Women and the Civil Rights Movement

The Civil Rights movement can be described as a struggle, a revolution, or a change. The journey for African-Americans to be granted justice during the Civil Rights movement, however, can be described as sickening. In Danielle McGuire's book At the Dark End of the Street, far too many accounts of rape, murder, and cruelty were explored to show the horrors experienced by blacks in the south. While reading At the Dark End of the Street, one word comes to mind: sickening. More specifically, the events regarding the treatment of African-Americans in a courtroom trying to defend themselves and their bodies are sickening. On September 3, 1944, Recy Taylor, a twenty-four-year-old sharecropper and mother, would begin a long fight for justice regarding bodily integrity of African-American women in the south, more specifically in her town of Abbeville, Alabama. Taylor, Fannie Daniel, and Fannie's son, West, were approached by a private in the U.S. Army, who was accompanied by six other men ar

Three Steps to Quality Writing

On the list of fun things to do, many students rank writing an essay somewhere between getting a root canal and studying for finals.  But why does writing get such a bum rap?  Perhaps it is because students frequently get back marked up papers with lower-than-expected grades and, therefore, cringe whenever the next essay comes along.  This experience, however, is completely avoidable.  By learning to master essay organization, idea development, and basic formatting guidelines, most students can take the three biggest steps toward more successful writing.   In the typical five-paragraph essay (like this one), the writer organizes his or her work around a thesis statement and three body paragraphs.  Look how this essay starts with a sentence designed to generate some interest and to engage the reader.  By the end of that introduction paragraph, the writer gets to his thesis statement: th

My Place in Society

Society seems to be a mass powered system which manipulates what is right or important; I have my own take on society depending on how I'm affected by society growing up and what values our parents instill upon me. Since I grew up rejected by society, disliked by most due to my race my view upon society was thus morphed in a negative way. As a kid I didn't quite understand that aspect of people that instinctively ostracizes those who are different than them, and I only truly realized it when I looked back at my childhood when I knew more of the world. I didn't have many friends growing up since I was "weird ", however as I grew up I started to realize how much of a blessing that was. Because I was ostracized I was able to appreciate the more important things in life and come to terms with the way society affected my life. Society beckons reform and forces people to present themselves in a manner that is acceptable, and because of that we have become mongrels who are only interested i

Managing an Upbeat Pharmaceutical Company

A business is nothing without the leadership and guidance from a good manager. They are the vision and they direct everything that goes on within the company. They decide how to use the resources to achieve long-term and short-term goals. They achieve these goals by planning, organizing, leading, and controlling resources, including people, money, and time. I personally feel I have a few qualities of becoming a great manager. For example, I have always thought of the bigger picture while paying attention to the little details. I also believe that discipline is a must and need to be practiced all the time, if the business is to run smoothly, discipline must be enforced. I always respect and try to connect with the people working in my team. That is important because if everybody in the group gets along, work can be completed faster. I am also committed to the cause, I try to project that feeling onto the people in my group, because overall it is a group effort. Most importantly, I love having things organized. It makes things easier to run if everyone knows their job. Each of the 3 different styles of managing are unique, they each carry their own

Labor and Delivery Nursing

"Labor and delivery nursing is deemed as a profession that reaches far beyond its expectations because it deals with both the mother and child" (Carla Andrews, personal communication). This statement made by Carla Andrews, a professional labor and delivery nurse of thirteen years, gives a glimpse into the profession. When going into further detail, it shows how labor and delivery nurses have expectations of them that demand for them to be constantly on the move with the tasks at hand that are unpredictable due to the fact that they have to care for two individuals, the woman and the child. The daily aspects of these type of nurses deal with making sure both the woman and the child are healthy and prepared for the delivery. Not only do the nurses take on the role of preparing and monitoring, but also support for the women. Amongst the labor and delivery nurses, a culture of teamwork and togetherness is made because the nurses rely on one another to successfully cater to the wo

The Other Wes Moore

Decisive choices made during the adolescence stage of an individual's life may affect their fate. The non-fiction story, The Other Wes Moore told by Wes Moore himself is a gripping alternative narrative. This story is about two boys who share the same name; grew up in the same neighborhood; and had no father figure, yet they became very dissimilar. Both men dealt with a lot of choice in their lives however there was one distinct choice that made them unalike. Many things tied into their choices, two attributes were such as family and neighborhoods that affected them mainly growing up. These kinds of exposures are what led them to their decisions that changed their future lives. Family influence has a enormous affect on a child when he or she is growing up; therefore it is necessary for them to have a good and strong family influence. Wes (1)'s mother had always been strict with him, although his grandparents were even stricter with him. He says, " but soon realized that my grand

Battered Wife Syndrome

Battered Wife Syndrome is a psychological condition of a wife stemming from prolonged emotional, physical, and/or sexual abuse from their spouse. It is better known as Battered Woman/Person Syndrome, widening the scope of the definition to apply to more cases with similar outcomes. A diagnosis of this nature usually arises after the abused person in question injures or kills their spouse, the abuser. In the trial following an event where the battered wife attacked and/or killed her abuser, it is sometimes questionable as to whether or not Battered Wife Syndrome is a justifiable reason to harm or kill another human being. But some background about Battered Wife Syndrome and policy recommendations could help determine on a case-by-case basis why the abusers fate might have had reasoning behind it. Battered Wife Syndrome diagnoses are extremely similar to those of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dr. Rachel Yehuda, PhD, a professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience, the Mount Sinai Sch

College, Alcohol and Freshman

College, for any first year freshman, is a whole new start facing a variety of new challenges. Some of those include; managing their time, living on their own, balancing money, and making new friends. A major issue that a significant amount of freshman are having is to cope with alcohol. With students getting used to the taste of freedom, the choice whether or not to have alcohol becomes an internal conflict. Along with being independent, new freshman are being pressured into drinking alcohol to not be singled out, or make new friends. College is a time where students are not only shaping their future, but also having fun simultaneously. First time freshman need to realize that there are other options in having fun that do not have mental and academic consequences. How would I structure exactly the statistics of how many incoming freshman drink, the amount affected, etc. without the information collected all being all plagiarized. I am unsure how to write statistics in particular in

A Holiday with Barack Obama

If I had to choose a person to celebrate their birthday as a holiday it would have to be Barack Obama. I chose Barack Obama for several reasons, not only has he done a lot as a politician but he also broke a lot of barriers and made history by becoming the first American president that is partially African-American. His mom is white and his father hails from East Africa. Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4th 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a civil-rights lawyer and teacher before pursuing a political career and Obama also worked in Chicago as a community organizer for low-income residents. Living in a country where people like me were treated as less than humans and treated like animals and used as free labor, his achievement puts things in perspective for all people living in America of African descent; and being that just about 60 years ago there were barely any black people in politics. He made me believe that a person that looks like me can become anything I put my mind t
