Short Story - My Special Christmas Bear

It was a cold, bitter Christmas Eve night five years ago and my family had just finished opening all of our presents. It was getting late and my dad was getting ready to leave. Even though my parents were divorced, my dad still joined us for Christmas gatherings. I ran up to him and gave him a big hug. As I buried my head in his chest, all I could smell was his Old Spice cologne. If I had known at that very moment that was the last hug I would ever get from my dad, I would have held on for much longer. The very next morning, Christmas Day, at about 5:45 am, my mother received a call from my dad asking her to bring him to the hospital. My sister, Melanie, decided to go with her just to make sure everything was okay. My father passed away in the car with them on the way to the hospital. When my older sister, Christina, received a phone call and dropped to the ground in tears, I knew exactly what had happened. It was such an unexpected heartbreaking experience, especially since it happene

Hills Like White Elephants and Araby

A conflict can be triggered by any small situation that comes between two people. A conflict can come from a disagreement, an argument, or a misunderstanding in which then develops into a bigger situation. In the short stories "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway and "Araby" by James Joyce we see that love is the conflict presented in both stories. While the conflict of love is not presented exactly the same in both stories, we can find some similarities and differences as well. Both stories show characters stuck in a conflict about love, While in "Araby" the situation is more of an unrequited love, in "Hills Like White Elephants" two characters are confused about their love towards each other, the situation they are currently in is making them doubt their love for each other, and one decision they make can change everything between them. Love is the conflict in both stories, but the characters in the story take a different approach o

Foundationalism and Coherentism

In this paper, I will argue that the theory of coherentism is more justified than foundationalism. First, I will explain justification. Then, I will explain the theory of coherentism and foundationalism. Finally, I will argue that coherentist theory is closer to the truth than foundationalism. Justification is the reason why someone holds a belief or idea, the reason as to why the belief is a true one, or how one knows what one knows. Statements which can be justified by action, often form into arguments. For example attempts to justify why a man is late for his dinner date after assisting a person who is stranded, can become an argument. This man had motives for his justification, but never the less, his justification can or cannot be believed as truth by his dinner date. This example is one, where we could clearly see where this motive of helping another, led to the justification that the man was late and now his dinner date is upset and this could lead into an argument. Encounter Point - Film Documentary

Introduction Encounter Point is a movie that outlines the violence in the nation of Israel, between the Israelis and Palestinians. The two nations are introduced as equals as noted in their assembly in the Bereaved Families Forum. In Figure 1 you can see a picture of the founder of this forum (Tzivka Shahak) and a newer member (George Sa'adeh). Mothers, fathers, siblings and even spouses gather in the forum to discuss lives of loved ones lost in the battle. Within the forum, both the Palestinians and Israelis forget their differences and agonize together in the shared pain of losing loved ones. Additionally, it shows some Israeli and Palestinians holding hands in both literal and figurative gestures while mourning the deaths of their loved ones. Though the two nations once stood in opposite sides of a long and bloody conflict, they come together in creating a hope and a future for their rivalry and the possibility of a peaceful coexistence. Billy Elliot - The Musical

On Thursday 23rd October 2014, I went to see Billy Elliot the musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London. On the route to the theatre I felt overwhelmed with excitement, because I was intrigued to find out how the director (Stephan Daldry) has portrayed the characters through lighting, costumes, movement and speech. When I first entered the theatre I was astonished by the detail and amazing view that was shown before the musical had even started; it felt amazing to be in the auditorium waiting for the play to start. Giving it a long period before it actually started it built up tension and made me feel excited. The musical was set in County Durham, against the background of the 1984 – 1985 Miner's Strike; which is historically accurate and helps the audience to understand how the miners were treated and how they felt throughout these years. Billy Elliot is an 11 year old boy who has grown up in a poor community and a world of rules and traditions. Billy stumbles out of the

Fitness Program Managment

As a college student it is evident that each and every person experiences stress. I believe most college students bite off more than they can chew. I think that most college students are so convinced that they have to prove themselves that they take on a greater amount of responsibility than they can handle at one time. Stress is defined as "Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way." (http://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-symptoms-causes-and-effects.htm) Stress can affect the way you eat, sleep, respond to situations and the way you function everyday. Everyone is different with the way they cop with their stress habits. Through my findings it was evident that people eat too much or too little, sleep too much or too little, exercise, abuse alcohol and drugs and occasionally do nothing at all. Being a college student, you are exposed to many opportunities to abuse drugs and alcohol. Most college

The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

Every individual has a different perception on values. Some may think that life is about the little things that make them happy, however others may feel the opposite way and that expenses are the way to live. In Guy de Maupassant's short story, "The Necklace" there is a clear relationship of the theme individual and society. He mentions the main character, Madame Loisel, who is a beautiful woman that lives in a wonderful home with all the necessary supplies needed to survive and more. However, she is very unhappy with her life. She feels she deserves a much more expensive and materialistic life than what she has. After pitying herself for not being the richest of her friends, she goes out and borrows a beautiful necklace from one of her friends. But when she misplaces the closest thing she has to the life she dreams of and not telling her friend about the situation, she set herself up for ten years of hard work.

Evaluation of a Fitness Center

Attending SWOSU, I am surrounded by great facilities and I am lucky to have the opportunities to train and become a better student-athlete. The Wellness Centre is the facility that is open to all students and is equipped with three gyms, multiple dance studios, an indoor track, a weight room and a rock climbing wall. In my opinion, I do believe that this facility is user friendly. It is a great place to work out and train with teammates or friends but it is also a place to learn. There are multiple conference rooms and classrooms that are occupied by classes throughout the day. The Wellness centre also runs work out classes that are available to the student body at no extra cost. I believe It is a great way to get in shape, have fun and meet new people. Throughout the year, the Wellness Centre has activities held for the student body to not only attend but participate in. Intramu

The Story of Paddington Bear

It all started on Christmas Eve in 1956, when a cameraman Michael Bond noticed a small bear on a shelf in a London store near the Paddington station and bought it as a present for his wife Brenda. The bear inspired Bond to write a story, and in 10 days he had written the first book. After the first Paddington book was accepted, Michael Bond went on to write a whole series and by 1965 his books were so successful that that he was able to give up his job with the BBC in order to become a full-time writer.
The action of the story takes place in London of 1950s. Each chapter in the books about Paddington is a completed story, which describes Paddington's adventures in different situations. All the stories develop in the same way. At first Paddington has a brainwave, then he gets into troubles, but finally everything comes to the happy ending. Furthermore, all the chapters are connected with the same characters, which are in some way entangled in Paddington's adventure. They are typical and very easy to remember. Mr. Brown tries to be strict and responsible, but in fact he is kind and fri

Journey of a Hero

Even our greatest, fiercest, wisest warriors and heroes have shortcomings and flaws that can be exposed in a variety of ways. Seemingly invincible, Gilgamesh and other immortals or near immortals had their curiosity get the better of them, as they strive to learn whether death truly is inevitable. The instructions and lessons learned by our heroes throughout their journeys are complex and not easily understood. A complete understanding of all the texts we have read is essential in order to maximize comprehension of individual situations amongst our heroes. The proper frame of mind, for both our heroes, and readers can be developed throughout the journey, yet cannot be easily learned. A series of trials and tribulations, while deterring our hero from their goal, will eventually harden them as a character. It is through our hero, that we ultimately

I Have a Voice!

The bonds of silence can often mask the most unique of personalities and make them seem bland or even boring. I understand that feeling of being trapped in a box and not being able to ask for help or reach out to someone. Being quiet is not in itself a negative quality, but consistent silence can prove to be problematic. Everyone needs someone to talk to and bounce ideas off of because when you don't share your ideas or talk to people, it prevents others from being able to see what you are truly capable of and improving yourself. There are three primary reasons why not having a voice is, in my estimation, a negative quality: firstly, it makes me seem as though my intention is to avoid social interaction. Secondly, I am unable to portray my true potential to my instructors and others around me. Lastly, I am unable to differentiate myself from those around me and properly illustrate my unique personality. I often get nervous talking aloud or speaking with people that I don't know very well. I know that it is imperative to break this habit. Some students

Concert Report - Connecticut Little Symphony

On Sunday, October 19, 2014 the Connecticut Little Symphony performed at St. Peter's Church, Chelsea 346 West 20th, NYC. Their program entitled "An American Sound" consisted of works by Jewish Russian-American composers, composers such as Eric Ewazen, Elmer Bernstein, Aaron Copland and others. The program was intended to bring together a small core group of musicians to allow the music usually played by a full symphony orchestra; which is usually set in large concert halls, to be played in a small public area. Some selections of the concerts included a quintet entitled "Western Fanfare", a symphonic composition entitled Music from "To Kill A Mockingbird", and another entitled "Simple Gifts" among others. Eric Ewazen has received his M.M and D.M.A degrees from The Julliard School and has been a faculty member there since 1980. Service Contract Arrangement

SERVICE CONTRACT ARRANGEMENTS A Service Contract Arrangement is a long-term contractual framework used by some host governments to take advantage of the international oil companies' (IOC), expertise and capital over a specified period, without having to hand over the field and production ownership rights to them. By the Mineral Oils Ordinance, 1914, the types of oil rights that could be acquired by IOCs for exploration activities were Oil Exploration Licenses, Oil Prospecting Licenses and Oil Mining Licenses. Between 1960 and 1969 these concessions began to be criticized as being too colonialist and exploitative in nature. The contracts which characterized this period were as follows: a. Concessions- Upon the discovery of oil in commercial quantities, the IOC is granted an OML for a number of years and is allowed to exploit, produce, and market the proceeds from the acreage exclusively. It however pays royalties and Petroleum Profit Tax to the government. b. Joint Ventures- Both pa

Gettysburg and The Killer Angels

Every war has both physical and mental effects on individual soldiers. The Killer Angels shows us the affects that the battle of Gettysburg had on individual soldiers. Some were injured, some died, some refused to fight, and both sides fought to keep the moral of their side up. The men of the 2nd Maine refused to fight after their regiment had been disbanded. Their regiment had been disbanded because many of the men in the 2nd Maine had only signed for two years while others had signed for three. When the two years was up for the men who had signed up they left. Only one-hundred and twenty men from the 2nd Maine remained because they had signed up for three years rather than two. These men were refusing to fight and had been sent to Chamberlain because he was also from Maine and they figured they'd fight for him. Chamberlain was told to shoot anybody who refused to fight, but Chamberlain had a different strategy he talked to the men and saw things from their point of view. He gave them the option to fight alongside his regiment. After the men of the 2nd Maine had finished eating the regiment began to move and Chamberlain had his brother Tom find out how many of the

Jefferson and the Constitutionality of a National Bank

The disagreement over the constitutionality of the Bank of the United States led to the formation of a division between those with a strict construction view and a loose construction view of the Constitution. Leading these opposing sides were Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Hamilton. Jefferson, who questioned the constitutionality of the Bank of the United States, was asked by George Washington to draft up a formal statement regarding the constitutionality of the bill. Thomas Jefferson opposed the bill because he believed that it was a misguided, unconstitutional concept that would only lead to a looser interpretation of the constitution. Jefferson begins by restating the bill for the National Bank and pointing out all of its unconstitutional implications. Jefferson asserts that the formation of a national bank would turn its customers, or American citizens into a "corporation" . He cites that enabling land grants is against the Statutes of Mortmain. Hypothetically, the bill wo

Analysis of a Reddit Post

Reddit is an entertainment based social network website where registered members can submit content such as pictures, text, or links. Only registered members can "up vote" or "down vote" other member's submissions which works to bring the best posts to the top of the site's pages. The entire site is organized into "subreddits," which are pages based on areas of interest. Each subreddit contains a specific set of rules which help shape the subreddit communities into exactly what kind of community the moderator wanted it as. There are many default subreddits where most of the activity on reddit takes place. One of these subreddits is called r/funny. r/funny was made for the sole purpose for the reader to go to and laugh. This is personally my favorite subreddit and it is where I submitted the post that I will be analyzing. The first thing one must do when analyzing a reddit post is look at the explicit rules of the subreddit in which the post took place.

Globalization of Sports

Globalization is a word you hear and you start to think about the economy and politics and things of that nature. When you pair it with sports such as soccer, basketball, and baseball you think about how those too mix. With sports all we see are all our favorite players and how good they look playing the game that they love so much. We never think about how or where they came from. We never think about what goes on behind the sense of the MBL or the NBA. Since there are a wide range of sports to focus on we are going to focus specifically on the National Basketball Association (NBA). Globalization runs through the world of sports in several directions. What I mean by that is instead of the glitter and gold you see on TV, there are more to it. There are International scouting and recruitment of talent, Distribution of games through broadcasting and web, Sales of players' jerseys and other merchandise around the world, and cross-border investing in team ownership. In the NBA it's a p

The Warning Signs of Diabetes

Diabetes is a medical condition that has reached epic proportions in the United States. There are more than 25 million people living with diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association, and one third of those people are unaware that they are diabetic (Innes, 2012). More than one in three adults has prediabetes, which is where their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes ("Diabetes Latest| Features | CDC," 2014"). Meaning if they don't make healthy changes in their lives, they will develop diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is defined as a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998). Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues ("Diabetes Definition - Diseases and Conditions - Mayo Clinic," 1998). It's also your brain's main source of fuel ("Diabetes Definit

Nike - Great American Company

Nike, an American company named after the Greek goddess who personifies victory shows their tremendous success by becoming a major U.S. manufacturer of athletic apparel, and other sports equipment and services. Their revenue is based off worldwide selling with an average net income of $2 billion USD annually (Market Watch). Though their products are of great value and built quality, much of their success has been due to their ability to market their products to their customers efficiently. With the highly recognized trademarks of "Just Do It" and the Swoosh logo it's seemingly easy to point out Nike from the rest of the competition. The company logo is quite distinct and unique as well as the product slogan that has been utilized in commercials for a long period of time. The marketing strategy of Nike invests a lot in commercials and product promotion. Small things like the logo and the product slogan are implemented in consumer minds and make it easy for the brand to be rec

Jim Jones and Pancho Villa

There are many people in American history who have made a great impact over the years, including Jim Jones and Pancho Villa. Jim Jones was a person who tried to create a community of equal opportunity for everyone, although at the end of his life he led his followers into suicide. Pancho Villa was another person who had made a great impact on in American society. He "was the most iconic and best known personality of the Mexican Revolution and an enemy of the U.S. Jim Jones, a cult leader, who tried catering a community of his own based on equality, later "killing" his followers, Along with Pancho Villa, who lead the Mexican Revolution against the U.S, both greatly impacted American life throughout the 20th century. Writing Chapter Review

Upon beginning Writing Project 4, I had a particularly difficult time with figuring out specific solutions that were relevant to my topic. Honestly, I think that I chose a topic that was much more complex than I could handle. I knew that the transfer of credits was really common among students across the nation, but I couldn't quite figure out any proposals that could solve this universal problem. This was probably the most difficult paper I have ever written. It took a lot of time to map out what I was going to write, but I feel that, in the end, I constructed a decent structured essay. To be quite frank, of all the times we have done peer review, I would say that the anonymous review sessions were the absolute, most effective. Part of why I thought of it

Niebuhr's Moral Man and Immoral Society

Niebuhr's Moral Man and Immoral Society is a look on politics and ethics. Niebuhr focuses on the importance of justice. Niebuhr is trying to discover what justice is, and whether or not it is possible to determine if nations are progressing or regressing towards justice. Niebuhr raises the question of whether or not it is possible to achieve perfect justice. He also questions why anyone should strive for perfect justice if it is unachievable. He uses Moral Man and Immoral Society to explain why a political utopia is impossible to achieve. He argues that although perfect justice cannot be achieved, it is possible to come close to a political utopia. He discusses achieving justice through reason and through ethics. He makes the claim that there is a fundamental difference between individual morality and group morality. He argues that it is impossible to expect everyone, whether internationally or within a state, to act morally toward one another. Humans are not capable of this

Ashes to Ashes - Sonnet 73

The escalating liveliness and usage of imagery in regards to the time, light, and season both supplement and contradict the speaker's disappearing body in William Shakespeare's Sonnet 73. Moving from couple cheerless metaphors to those much livelier and passionate ones within each quatrain, the sonnet takes on the paradox from the speakers perishing body with living soul to create a parallel metaphor in regards to the speakers unacquainted love relationship with the Fair Young Man. The season fall becomes the sonnets most general metaphor in respect to the addressers aging body in the first quatrain of sonnet 73. The speaker fails to clarify which season he is originally referring to in the opening line for it only refers to That time of years thou maist in me behold (1). While the speaker mentions me, the word is followed after thou, lacking the detail that the speaker is placed within the first quatrain. However, the second and the third quatrain invert this by In me thou seest, (5

Critical Review - The Jesus I Never Knew

Philip Yancey's book The Jesus I Never Knew shows primarily his two views of Jesus. His view of Jesus from his childhood and his view as he begins to grow and was more informed. Yancey decides to reexamine these traditional views after he encountered some confusing experiences of the imagery that was portrayed as Jesus throughout his life. He used Gospel accounts concentrating mainly on the message of the Sermon on the Mount. By doing so he tries to dispel the confusion found in Jesus' teachings. The book looks three aspects of Jesus. Firstly it looks at who Jesus was, showing the teachings and miracles that he performed. the reason for his coming, and what he left behind. It also looked at the reason for his coming, which was to die for us (death and resurrection). Lastly it looked at his ascension and what it meant for the world. The emphasis on the humanity of Jesus and also be seen throughout the first section. In the second chapter the very human conditions of Jesus' birth are
