Government and America's National Parks

National parks are one of the greatest things to ever be put on this Earth by our savior, Lord Jesus Christ. There are over 80 million acres of treasured and sacred places protected in the United States. This means there are 400 national parks. The article I'm writing on is Government Must Preserve National Parks by Todd Davidson. The funding for national parks has been being cut for years. It has been like that for years, America's relationship with national parks has been an off and on deal. One year they want to fund them and help preserve them and then the next they cut the funding in half. But what Americas fail to realize is how much we as a nation need the national parks. National parks provide safe havens for native plants and animals, they keep our water and air clean, and they also help us learn about the environment. National Parks gives us places to enjoy. Before telling you how the government should protect the national parks, I should tell you why we should protect and f

General George S. Patton

General George S. Patton I chose General George S. Patton for my History project because he was a man that stood strong for his country and believed in his men. He was fearless, smart and led the country to many victories in WWI and WWII. He moved up in ranks fast because he had good war strategies and was the first to use mobile tanks in battle. He was a Four Star General. General Pattton was born on November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California. He grew up in a wealthy military family and lived on a big estate. He was home schooled until he was 11 years old. He always wanted to be a war hero like his father and grandfather. His legacy and leadership started in 1902 when he was 17 years old, he wrote a letter to the Senator wanting to be in the Virginia Military Institute. The senator told him that he had to take an entrance exam and he passed. General Patton struggled with reading, writing and math but was very good in military drills and uniform appearance so this helped him get r

Judith Beheading Holofernes - Renaissance Painting

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio is known for his early religious paintings that synthesize with the late Renaissance and the decline of the Church's power. His bold, naturalistic style revolutionized Renaissance art by introducing a new style that was adopted by many artists. "Judith Beheading Holofernes" was the first instance where Caravaggio used a highly dramatic scene for his painting, inspiring artists of the 16th century Baroque movement to use intense emotions and realism to bring followers back to the Church (T). This early religious painting was made from 1598-99 in Palazzo Barberini, Rome, illustrating the Old Testament account in the Book of Judith (13:7-8) where the young hero kills Holofernes, an Assyrian general, in order to save her hometown. The painting captures the moment when Judith mercilessly cuts off the head of Holofernes after seducing the war general. The ferocity of the scene is captured through dramatic facial expressions and theatrical lighting

College - Big Fish, Small Pond

If you compare Walsh to most other universities it is significantly smaller. To some people they see this as a disadvantage. They see a smaller school as less prestigious with a lesser social life. Most get attracted to the allure of the big schools, the large sporting events filled with many students and just many activities on campus day to day. By focusing on how lucrative bigger schools are most people lose focus on the most important part of college, the education aspect. Smaller schools offer you smaller class sizes with more individual attention with your professor. As for the social aspect of college wherever you go it is however you chose to make it. You will never know everyone at your college no matter how big on how small it is so in the end it is up to you on how you socialize at your respected university. Another advantage of going to a smaller school is the feeling that you are just not another number at a school. You can feel like you actually matter instead of just bei

Taking Every Precaution

Have you ever had something happen to you that you thought would never happen? Have you ever been told something about yourself that you didn't know? Have you ever realized something that is life changing? I can answer yes to all three of these questions. When I was seven, I learned something about myself that I never expected - something that would change my life forever. One day, eight years ago, I had my annual regular check up with my pediatrician, just like all kids. My mom and I waited for a while in the waiting room before we got called back to see my pediatrician. My doctor came into the small room and as usual asked me a couple questions. They were the same questions he asked at every visit. The doctor then checked my eyes, my ears, and my reflexes. Then, he finally got out his stethoscope to listen to my heartbeat. After listening for a couple minutes, he asked if I ha

Hurricane Katrina

Flooding over eighty percent of a city, reducing a population from 437,198 to 158,350 in less than two years, causing roughly one hundred billion dollars of damage, and racking up a death toll of at least one and a half thousand people, it is unquestionable that Hurricane Katrina was one of the deadliest storms the world has ever seen. Not only was Hurricane Katrina the by far the most lethal and most destructive storm of the 2005 hurricane season, as well as the costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States, but also it is one of the top five deadliest hurricanes. For anyone living in New Orleans at the time, experiencing Katrina was like waking up to a living nightmare. In the novel Zeitoun, written by Dave Eggers, he tells the story of Abdulrahman Zeitoun and his family, one of many effected by the disaster known as Hurricane Katrina. Throughout the story, Abdulrahman, Zeitoun for short, struggles to do what is right for his family, or what is right for his communit

Ways of Seeing by John Berger

In John Berger's "Ways of Seeing," he discusses the mystification of art. Art tends to be a pleasure that one must interpret for themselves by getting the art to speak. Art is mystified, meaning that it is impossible to understand art and know its history without also understanding the present, and that whatever we see corresponds to our perspective and what we previously know about our art experiences. However, to demystify and interpret a meaning depends on what questions the painting is approached with in order to turn a silent painting into one that intrigues the viewer and entices conversation. When interpreting paintings, it is important that the silence is removed so that the viewer is no longer mystified by the silence and stillness and is able to successfully form a relationship with the artwork. Berger claims that the way to demystify and make these paintings speak is to learn to ask "the right questions of the past" (167). To experience this demystificati

College - Wasting Time and Money

Is wasting time the only thing we waste? Or do the things we attend or do waste our time? Caroline Bird wrote the argumentative argument in 1975 of "College Is a Waste of Time and Money". Caroline argues for college students who thinks college is a waste of their time, and money. She supports this view by observing the colleges, and doing interviews with the students. She believes students go there because it is a institution and they are not getting educated when going to college. To convince her audience Bird appeals to the audience's logos by drawing conclusions from educators, students, and testimonials by observing the colleges atmospheres. Bird appeals to the audience's ethos because she actually cares about the students as well. The students at the college told her how they felt about attending college. She also uses logos by stating statistics from this experience. This argument "College Is a Waste of Time and Money" author is effective at convincing the audience to reconsider

College - Worth the Price?

"What are individuals and our society as a whole gaining from higher education?" This is a puzzling question for most people to answer. Of course the achievement of a degree and the careers that go along with them are key factors but Andre Hacker and Claudia Dreifus did a fantastic job of breaking up details to support how college could be more valuable in the passage, Are Colleges Worth the Price of Admissions. They give numerous steps that they think colleges should take to make themselves worth the money that they charge students. They also desire to change the way professors are paid and treated, and the way that the schools use their money overall. The main point that they are getting at is that colleges has lost touch with their main goal of educating students. This passage is directed to millions of people since there are a high number of people in college or planning to attend. This makes the passage even better since it is very helpful to that audience, it will give

Double Identities - Changing Our Behaviors

United States immigrants, especially children and teenagers, always have a wish to fit in with everyone around them. In order to accomplish this, they change their behavior, which ultimately shapes their character and personality. This resulting identity is wholly different from the culture that initially migrated with them. Famous Indian author Jhumpa Lahiri, Vietnamese writer Bich Minh Nguyen, and filmmaker Mira Nair clearly demonstrate the capriciousness of identity among immigrants in America. The contrasting identities in the public sphere of society and the private realm of family is evident in each of these pieces of literature; this theme is significant because it epitomizes the influence that American stereotypes and culture have on foreign migrators. Throughout Jhumpa Lahiri's short story, "When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine", the identity of the main character, Lilia, fluctuates between being an ignorant Indian girl and being a normal American citizen. Whenever she is inside the realm of family, Lilia is portrayed as a little girl struggling to understand her culture, but in her "public life", she is a typical American

Parkinson's Disease - Physical and Psychological

There has been no diagnostic criteria developed to date to help identify Parkinson's disease. An expert will typically identify the disease once a person starts to develop the symptoms. There are various ways to measure the dopamine levels in ones cerebrospinal fluid utilizing biochemical measures. Another tool utilized to test for the disease is using a computer program aimed at measuring a patient's movement time. There is also a survey consisting of nine questions related to various symptoms, as well as specific disease questions. This screening provides a measuring tool of the dopamine system. As a person ages the odds of developing Parkinson's disease increases by comparison to others. That being said though, it is difficult to identify the actual numbers of those with Parkinson numbers as they tend to vary within internal communities. Currently there are a limited amount of studies completed on Parkinson's and the samples are often restricted. The risk factors are typically tied to environmental factors but there are o

The Scientist - Song Analysis

Songs is one of the most important and powerful things in life. Songs can do a lot of things like inspire, annoy, motivate, and cheer people up, but the most important thing is that it people relate to it. Love songs are easy to relate to because it makes people feel like they are not the only one that are going through it. Sometimes the message is clear and other times the audiences have to listen closely to figure out what a song is actually saying about love. There are so many kinds of love songs and everyone interprets them differently. There are love songs about new love, true love, old love, and many more. "The Scientist" by Coldplay is a love song about a recent break up and now he are thinking that it was a big mistake. He is thinking what went wrong and what they could have done better. "The Scientist" by Coldplay is created around a piano ballad, with its lyrics telling a story about a man's desire to love and apologize. It is about a broken relationship

The Long-Term Consequences of a Criminal Record

What is a criminal record? A criminal records is person's history of been convicted of a crime. This kind of history is very essential for an individual because it can jeopardize his or her chances of prosperity in a variety of ways. In most cases, it can hinder the person's chance of going to college, getting a job, the freedom to even move around without being humiliated or looked up differently by his or her fellow peers. Now the question as to whether or not criminal records should be made public information arises. Personally I will say that it depends in the type of crime or extend to which the crime might have been committed. A crime is the violation of the morals of the public of society as a whole. There are several types of crimes, some which can be neglected after haven been punished, and others that needs to be kept as a record and even be distributed to certain authorities. Loitering, not respecting traffic laws, over speeding, fighting in public. These are the types of

Continuity and Change - Russia and China

The Mongol Rule was politically much more significant in the Chinese than the Russians, but increased the economic effects equally in both regions. In China, the Mongols completely ignored civil service exams and administration by the Chinese, while in Russia, they maintained a tributary relationship with local princes. Both conquered regions were taxed, and increased globalization. The Mongol enforced harsh rules on both the Chinese and Russians, but allowed them to practice their religion freely. When the Mongols invaded China, the Chinese prohibited themselves from learning anything Mongolian. While in China, some Mongolians absorbed Chinese culture. For example, some adapted Tibet Buddhism, while others stayed Shamanism. This shows there was a fine line between the Chines

Abortion - Preventative Measures

In 1993, the Supreme Court came to an agreement of making the killing of innocent children legal; in other words, allowing abortion. Since then, Abortion has been one of the most controversial topics in America. When it comes to abortion, there are two types of groups, Pro Life and Pro Choice. Pro Life meaning that abortion is wrong and should be illegal while, pro choice means that abortion should be legal since it's a choice. People usually stick to one of these opinions and try to argue back to every opinion against theirs. For example, people who are Pro Life will argue that abortion is considered as murder and those that are Pro Choice will argue that abortion is fine when the girl gets raped because she did not choose to get pregnant. Everyday, a child who is not even born yet is facing whether he or she will be born or not. Almost like flipping a coin, heads they're born, tails they die. There are approximately 42 million abortions in the world, every year. That's 42 million ch

Organizing for International Growth

Kent was established in 1917 as a rubber producer, with the founding Fisher family controlling majority of the stock. Due to overseas acquisitions, expansions and increased sales, Kent Chemical had become a leading global specialty-chemical company; a multiheaded hydra with $2.2 billion revenues in 2007. Through intensive R&D and innovations the company had developed a viable product line including consumer, fire protection and medical plastics products. However, the decision to transform Kent from a U.S. company dabbling in international markets into a viable contender that develops, manufactures and sells worldwide became a top priority in 1998, when Ben Fisher became CEO of the company. To implement his vision of a global integrated company, Fisher named Morales, a 22-year Kent veteran who had become a country manager to head the international division of Kent Chemical Products 1. What were the problems facing Luis Morales as he began implementing Ben Fisher's international expansion strategy? The speedy growth of the overseas business had also led to some challenges that needed t

Personal Narrative - The Death of Robin Williams

There are many events in life that happen that can affect the world. These significant events change the way people perceive the world and how the handle situations or interpret different things. Events like 9/11 terrorist attacks and the falling of the Berlin wall affected people around the world, and in some cases brought them closer together. But there are certain smaller events such as an inspirational celebrity's death that can change many people's perspectives on life. A certain celebrity's death that shocked the world was the death of the actor Robin Williams. Robin Williams was a great man with many colors and his death brought many people sadness, including me. It was August 11th, it was a summer day and the first day of school was getting closer and closer. That day was just like any summer day for me, I just relaxed at home trying to enjoy my last days of freedom before heading off to school. That evening my family and I ate dinner around 6:45 pm. Wheel of Fortune was on and at ar

Concussions and American Football

Junior Seau was the number 5 overall pick in the 1990 NFL draft. He was a 12 time pro bowler and 10 time all pro, and was named to the NFL 1990 all decade team as a linebacker. He was beloved by fans and feared on the field as all great football players should be. Seau was found dead in his home in Oceanside California on May 2 2012. It wasn't a burglary. It wasn't homicide. It was suicide, and found next to him were the scribbled lyrics of a country song entitled "who I aint", a song about a man who longed for his former self and hated who he had become. Seau was a victim of circumstance. Being too big, too athletic, and to tough, and the only way to put all that to good use is to become an NFL football player. Little did he know that every snap he took, every play he made would come back to haunt him. Football players often deal with injury. It's in their job description, but imagine having to come back from an injury that not only damage your mechanic and cognitive skillse

My Trip to Milan

When everything in life stops and you feel like you are stuck in some sort of black hole, and there is no light in the end your whole body screams for changes. You don't hesitate for changes and you let it go. That is what exactly what I did. I became my own puppet master, and it was time to pull the strings in the right direction. I still recall everything as if it happened only yesterday, probably, because from that day on everything changed. Three days till half term. I decided that I will start my half term bit early ,so I knew I will be spending those three days at home as well. The weather was awful, it had been raining for few days in a row, and everything outside my room's window looked so sad and grey, as if the whole nature was sobbing, because the winter was just knocking on the door to come in. I did't dare to go outside, so I wrapped my self in blankets and just layer in bed whilst watching shows. My eyes were glued to my MacBooks screen while watching tons of pointless t

How Low-Income Commuters View Cycling

The article "How Low-Income Commuters View Cycling" explains that the poor use public transportation even more than the high-income commuters. Although high income commuters use public transportation, they don't use it for traveling but for commuting to larger cities. Cycling is also not appealing to anyone because they feel it's dangerous and not safe. These people simply want a car and if they can't afford they rather take public transportation rather than using a bike to commute. The environmental products advisements I found appeal both the low-income and the high-income people, especially the method soap ad because it has a rubber duck with three eyes and the ad says that method soap isn't toxic therefore it won't contaminate rivers and harm animals. Another ad I found was the water ad; it shows how they have reduced the amount of plastic used to make the bottle. This makes the consumer feel like they are reducing the amount of waste they use. The ads don't show caring f

The Two Party System and the Jacksonian Era

Frequently recognized by historians, the period between 1820 and 1840 is known as the Jacksonian Era, where the American Democratic Revolution led to the division of the Democratic-Republicans. After the War of 1812, the aristocratic Federalist Party virtually dissipated, and the Republican Party separated into competing factions. The expansion of the franchise weakened the political systems dominated by dignitaries of high status and in its place emerged a system managed by professional politicians who were mostly of the middle-class origin. Ultimately, major conflicting political personalities and fiscal issues due to tariffs and the Second Bank of the United States eventually led to the split of two parties: the National Republicans (later to be known as the Whigs) governed by John Quincy Adams and the Democratic-Republicans (Jacksonian Democrats) facilitated by Andrew Jackson. Significant political personalities was one of the primary contributions to the reemergence of a two part

America - Discovery and Colonization (1497-1650)

DISCOVERY AND COLONIZATION 1497-1650 Why did the European powers begin at this time to spread their influence and power across the globe? 1. The decline of Feudalism and the rise of the National State. 2. The coinciding intellectual revolution. That is the fact that there is a revival of learning. 3. With the rise of the National State there is also a rise in trade between nations. 4. The protestant reformation which created religious diversity and a desire by some people to rid themselves of Catholicism. 5. And the natural human characteristics of greed conquest, racism and slavery. 6. The return of Marco Polo from the Orient with stories of fabulous riches of gems, precious metals and spices. Juveniles and the Death Penalty

Most juveniles make many mistakes growing up and don't think about their choices rationally. There are too many factors that go into judging a juveniles behavior like peer pressure, environment, the way their being raised and mental state. Most juvenile's brains aren't even fully developed at that age. This is why I believe that juveniles should not be given the death penalty; they're too young to understand their actions and the consequences that come with their actions. They shouldn't be punished for the rest of their life when in reality their life has hardly begun. I believe it's possible that they can be rehabilitated and still be an active member in society despite the terrible mistake they made. Whether or not to give juveniles life and try them as adults is one of the most controversial topics in today's court system. With the number of children in adult prisons and jails rising rapidly, questions are being asked as to why children have been committing such terrible crimes and

Marijuana - Legalize It!

The use of marijuana for medical purposes has been legalized in thirteen states and all states will probably adopt similar policies in the near future. I think all states should quickly find a way to incorporate the legalization of marijuana into their systems because of all the benefits it has not only on the people who use it but also the communities and states where users live. All the things that are treated by marijuana make it such a great asset to have in a state to treat cancer patients and in return it will lead to a boost in the state's economy. Taking this information into Consideration I believe that the use of Marijuana for those over the age of twenty- one should be legal in all states. Marijuana has gotten a bad rep for years until lately because many scientists have started to research it. After multiple researches and test were conducted the results amazed many scientist so they decided to bring it forward and present it to many treatment searching facilities to try and use it as a cure . In the end they all found out that marijuana can help patients with such diseases as Alzheimer's, anxiety , Parki

The Legal Drinking Age

Abstract This paper looks at two opposing sides of the argument on whether the legal drinking age should remain at 21 or be lowered to 18. It is safer and more responsible for the legal age limit to remain 21. However, it is fair and economically smart to change the age to 18. This paper looks at the negative effects of a younger population having access to alcohol such as drunk driving statistics, hospitalization of young people due to alcohol, the harm alcohol does to the adolescent brain, and the irresponsible behaviors of teenagers when they have been drinking. In this paper we will also notice the positive outcomes of a lower legal drinking age such as an economic boost. The better choice however, is for the legal drinking age to remain at 21. A Look at the Ongoing Debate as To Whether the Legal Drinking Age Should Be 21 Or 18 The drinking age has been a controversial topic since the 1970's. Should it be 18? Should it be 21? Or somewhere in between? Should it be up to the federal
