Equipment - Stopping Deadly Force

The Mission of New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in our city by working in partnership with the community and in accordance with constitutional rights to enforce the laws, preserve the peace, reduce fear, and provide for a safe environment" ( Official N.Y.P.D Web). But as claims of police brutality, discrimination against minorities, use of excessive force, and unmoral killings continues to escalate, citizens are now being comforted in the proposed solution of police officers being equipped with body cameras in an effort to improve transparency and accountability in their interactions with Officers. According to U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin "The goal is to provide an objective record of "stop and frisks," which was to be found discriminating against minorities, and to encourage more "respectful " interactions" . The Implementation of Body Cameras Will Not Prevent Excessive Force or Achieve Accountability In Law Enforcement Officers. The

Into the Wild - Chris McCandless

Harrell, Brittany Jones A.P. Language and Composition 9 October 2014 Into the Wild Essay Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer follows a young Chris McCandless, a college graduate looking to adventure into the depths of the Alaskan wilderness, leaving his family and friends behind. The author argues whether or not McCandless is "all there " and the possibility that he might be losing his sanity as his journey continues. Krakauer is empathetic towards Chris McCandless due to the situations and circumstances that came along with his journey into the wilderness. In the book Krakauer made a connection to Chris McCandless and Alex. When McCandless left, he changed his name so it would be harder for people to find him. Westerberg said, "On the afternoon of September 10, driving out of Cut Bank after buying some parts for a malfunctioning combine, he pulled over for a hitchhiker, an amiable kid who said his name was Alex McCandless, " (16). At this point in the book he introduced himself as Alex McCandless, which helped the readers make the connection that Chris McCandless and Alex McCandless are the same person. This connection displayed early on in Krakauer'

Sammy in John Updike's A&P

John Updike writes a short story "A&P" which is narrated by a 19 year old cashier that works in a local grocery store. Sammy is very uninterested in his job as checkout clerk; he is more focused on the people who come in and out than his main task at hand. Through Sammy's observations of the three girls and other customers it gives the reader a better understanding of Sammy's characteristics. Sammy is a daydreamer, lustful & bold. This story represents a coming-of-age for Sammy. Even though it takes place over the period of a few minutes, it represents a much larger aspect of the maturity process. From the time the girls enter the grocery store, to the moment they leave, one can see changes in Sammy's personality as well as his thought process. Sammy displays that he is daydreamer in the beginning, when the three girls first walk into the store. "I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not." He was so focused on the girls entering the store totally disr

Wuthering Heights - Heathcliff and Catherine

Prompt: How does the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine as soulmates and the love that they have for one another affect the actions and decisions they make in their lives? Throughout Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff and Catherine's profound love for each other and their relationship as soulmates is reflected upon the decisions and actions made by the two. This is seen when both Heathcliff and Catherine try to overcome numerous obstacles, Heathcliff's reactions to Catherine's death, and Heathcliff's long urge to seek revenge on Edgar. The first way in which Bronte shows how Heathcliff and Catherine's relationship as soul mates affects the decisions they made is seen by having them overcome numerous obstacles in order to be close to each other. Even though the obstacles presented to the characters vary and have different results, all of the hardships that come between Catherine and Heathcliff have the same effect on both of them after the problem has passed

Globalization - The End of Geography

In 1778, a Captain James Cook, sailed the Resolution into Waimea Bay Hawaii. The effect of this journey was to radically restructure the space/time vectors connecting Hawaii with London. This rift in global space/time instantly conceptualized a dramatic shift in "positional, opening a wormhole in social space and time that qualitatively increased the connectivity between the two places. " Our society saw such a shift again in 1998 when the free access to the Internet became available, introducing the brand new concept of globalization. When such a shift that revolutionizes the relationship between space and time in such a way occurs, what does this mean for the natural study of spaces; geography? Is globalization the end of geography? This paper will discuss how globalization is in fact not the end of geography, yet, a revitalization of the subject that has/will in fact spread the study of earth at a faster rate than ever before, it will take a look at this debate from the economical p

Expansion and the United States

United States in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth century is both a continuation and a departure of the past United States expansionism. Expansionism in the U.S. has occurred for many reasons. Power from land, religion, economics, manifest destiny and the ideas of imperialism are just a few reasons why the U.S. decided to expand time and again throughout the course of its history. America's hunger for land and power led it to depart from its original foreign policies and expand worldwide, such as large parts of Asia and the Caribbean. This was because other countries in the world had already began expanding their borders and it was feared there would be nothing left for America after countries like Russia, Britain and Germany had finished choosing (Document A). Although the continuation of the United States' expansionism was limited, they continued to stay true to the Monroe Doctrine and the belief that they were chosen by god to lead the world into the future. Macbeth - Choice and Fate

Is it fate or free will that seals Macbeth fate in the play Macbeth? Most people think that because Duncan was predicated to become king by the three witches that he was destined to kill Duncan. Nonetheless, the predictions by the three witches, Lady Macbeth's manipulation, and his ambition and desire to be king guide his circumstances which bring about his own destruction. The prediction inspire the thoughts which are sparked by his own ambition to be king. The first predication is when we see the witches greet Macbeth by Thane of Cawdor (a title he has not been awarded) and King of Scotland. Once he is awarded the title The Thane of Cawdor; he realizes that the witch's predictions are coming true. Macbeth says that he has no desire to kill Duncan ("I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent," [1.7.25-26]). He sees that the prophecies mean that there is no necessity for him to do anything in order to become king; when he says "If Chance will have me King, why, Chance may crown

Justice Applied to Sexism and Racism

Justice is defined as the upholding of what is just, especially fair treatment and due reward in accordance with honor, standards, or law; the principle of moral rightness. I will use the principles of Kant, Bentham/Mill, and Plato to help show why some particular sexist and racist actions are wrong or unjust. Sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on the sex/behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex. Similarly, Racism is the belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that social differences produce and inherent superiority of a particular race/racial prejudice or discrimination. So let's say this young African American male has applied for job at a big city bank, and it just so happened that he was called to come in and have an interview. When he gets there he realizes that there is someone else there for the interview also and it so happens to be a white male. Both individuals go in for the int

High School and Real-World Skills

We all know how astonishing it is to come out of high school to be able to work and make the money you deserve by acquiring the knowledge of a trade from that school. There has been controversies to whether or not have more real world skills in high school then to just keep it as it. Many of these students that attend vocational schools have an upper hand in real world scenarios. These things help them look into the future and allows them to be able to enjoy their high school years. Not only are they enjoying these years but they are also benefiting from the trades they are taught. In my opinion I think that they should have more real world skills in high school because of the financial benefits from them, opportunities to be at the workplace to acquire more knowledge, and also would help reduce them from dropping out of high school to be successful in their trade. Which Matthew states "According to the National Center for Education Statistics, dropout rates have decreased from twelve

Gomer and the Book of Hosea

I. Intro We can see in the Old Testament that God has asked his prophets to do some strange things in order send an important message. God told Isaiah to walk around naked to send a message to the Egyptians that they will be under the same state when they are conquered by the Babylonians and taken away as slaves (Isaiah 20). Likewise, hes even asked Ezekiel not to mourn for his wife when she died so to give a message to the Israelites that they are too not to mourn when their sons and daughters die as well (Ezekiel 24:16-17, 20-24). And in this case of the prophet Hosea, God does not do any different. Trying to demonstrate something to the Israelites, He commands Hosea to marry an "unfaithful" woman (Hosea 1:2). It does not just end there for Hosea though. Gomer proves to be unfaithful and leaves Hosea to love other men. This would have been grounds for divorce and Hosea kicking Gomer out of his life, but God wanted to do something special here. He commands Hosea to

Raising Minimum Wage - A Poor Decision

*Dustin Brocker John L. Steadman Writing 121-10341 September 14, 2014 If Minimum was $15 an Hour? "Cha-ching" the sweet sound of money. Everybody needs money to either pay bills, buy food, or some things we enjoy such as going to the movies. The only problem is how does one get this sweet "cha-ching" everybody wants. Well, it is quite simple, get a job. Every worker has to make money to support themselves or their family. For some it is harder than others. Some parents have to work two or three jobs to earn enough money to support their children and make sure all the bills are paid. But why do they have to work multiple jobs? Do they not get paid enough, are they in a hole of debt. Many minimum wage workers have these problems. Many of these people work part time jobs and only make minimum wage. Then what are these people going to do? Well groups of these workers have made a request for fifteen dollars an hour. They call their protest "Fight 15". Th

Privatization of State Lotteries

THE PRIVATIZATION OF STATE LOTTERY (PFM) ISRAEL JIMOH "Early in American history, lotteries were quite common but also were generally operated by private organizations, not by state governments. For example, the construction and expansion of many early private American universities, including Harvard and Princeton, were financed in part through lottery sales. Prominent American leaders also lent their support to lotteries designed to raise funds for public works. John Hancock's signature appears on lottery tickets sold to fund the construction of Faneuil Hall while George Washington administered the unsuccessful 1768 Mountain Road Lottery in Virginia, and Ben F

Character Development in Toy Story

Noody's resolve to maintain his status as "Andy's Favourite Toy" is unravelled throughout the course of the story, until by the end he concedes that status to Buzz. At the moment of greatest crisis (right before the rocket explodes), Woody lets someone else be in charge for once, allowing himself to be literally taken under Buzz's wings. From the experience of his separation from Andy, Woody comes to believe his own words, "It doesn't matter how much we're played with-what matters is that we're here for Andy when he needs us." In the final scene we see Woody loosened up and dancing, satisfied to be part of the group rather than its leader; he's more comfortable with himself and chummier to Buzz. Buzz Lightyear appears to make a change when he comes to see himself as Andy's Toy rather than a Space Ranger. His presence forces Woody to confront his personal issues, and that impact remains constant until Woody's own "change" resolves the inequity (unfairnes

Conflicts in The Lottery

Justine Felipe English-1302 Journal Entry December 6, 2014 Individual Vs Society Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" has several different conflicts that can be related to in the story. However, the main central conflicts that seems to be focused on throughout the whole story is individual versus society. Although individual plays a significant part, I conclude that society is shown to be much more dominant. Tessie Hutchinson doesn't want to believe that her husband, and then later she herself, have been chosen for the Lottery, She hopes the town will show mercy for her and her family but due to them believing in their tradition, they shut her down. In the middle of the story, Mrs. Hutchinson with "her sweater thrown over her shoulders" states, "Clean forgot what day it was" to Mrs. Delacroix while "they both laughed softly"

Difficulties of Love in A Midsummer Night's Dream

"The course of true love never did run smooth," remarks Lysander, expressing one of A Midsummer Night's Dream's most important themes-the difficulty of love. Although most of the conflict in the play stems from the troubles of romance, and although the play involves a number of romantic elements, it is not truly a love story; it distances the audience from the emotions of the characters in order to poke fun at the torments and difficulties that those in love face. The tone of the play is so lighthearted that the audience never doubts that things will end happily, and it is therefore free to enjoy the comedy without being caught up in the tension of an uncertain outcome. The theme of loves difficulty is often explored through the motif of love out of balance. This is evident when looking at the Nobility, and the imbalance of their love; 'I wooed thee with my sword and won thy love doing thee injuries' Thesues' use of language suggests that he owns Hippolyta. This attitude towards women would have been widely accepted by an Elizabethan audience, because at the time males were considered dominant. However to a modern audience, it

A Memorable and Tragic Event

What is a memorable event you may ask, a memorable event is an occurrence that is unforgettable. What comes to mind when you hear memorable event? It can be something you did for the first time or something that had happen to you for the first time. For me, hundreds of things come to mind, but the memorable event that comes to mind over all of them is the car accident I was in during my junior year of high school. Car accidents are one of more reoccurring things that happen to everyone and they all have different outcomes. It was spring of my junior year of high school when the accident occurred. My mother and I were on our way home and we were jamming out to the radio, like we normally due after every week day. We had been on the road for about five minutes. Then next thing I hear is my mother telling me to hold on and I turned to see the car hit us on my side of our truck. The impact threw us to the median and it happened so fast that I couldn't believe what had happen. Still this day I can still hear the sound of the cars colliding and I can still feel my seat belt tighten around me right after. My mom wanted to che

The Country of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been considered to be South Asia's outsider in terms of the circumstances of poverty and deprivation. In 2011, it was ranked 92 in the UN Human Development, which is a higher rating than any other country in South Asia, and therefore grouped in the high human development category. This is the result because the island's life expectancy is 76 years, 10 years of schooling and 13 expected years of expected schooling. Sri Lanka has a population of 20 million and 52 of which are women. The largest ethnic communities are the Sinhalese, who are mostly Buddhist. The Tamils historically settled in the Northern and Eastern provinces as well as the descendants of South Indian immigrants who are mainly Hindi. A minority of Sinhalese and Tamils are Christians. Sri Lanka adopted the Gaullist presidential model in 1978 that has centralized power in the Executive and diminished the checks and balances function of Parliament and the Judiciary and the separation of powers between the bran

Influences of the Past

The Romans, the Mongols, the British and the Spanish empires and many more have all made us who we are today; from one empire another one was given birth to, but also as the culture, language, and food and even combat transformed and developed. Not just empire's but events such as the cold war, WII or even the crusades have brought and gave new revolutionary inventions and equipment. The world has developed and changed in languages and also cultures. Furthermore the world has been forged into a nearly perfect one, even though their still remains flaws to mend. The Romans created Latin as a result French, Italian, German and even English emerged through various ways. Moreover the experiments today suggested that different pronunciation and sometimes people putting gibberish and words together formed their unique language that only their country or city used. If it wasn't for language, cooperation and communication would be nearly impossible however sign language would be available to us

Poe and The Tell-Tale Heart

Insanity is described as an extreme state of foolishness and irrationality. Although the narrator of Edgar Allen Poe's short story, The Tell-Tale Heart, let's his lack of sound reasoning drive him to murder, he perceives himself to be a cunning and powerful master of fate in his plea to justify his sanity. Poe's narrator seems obsessed with this old man's blind eye. The narrator decides then, that murder would be the best option to exterminate the old man's bothersome eye. " –All a dull blue, with a hideous veil over it that chilled the very marrow in my bonesI made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever" (Poe). He is disconnected with reality and self-absorbed in his plan against the old man. His tragic flaws lead to his ultimate demise and earn him the title of an antihero. The speaker in this 19th century gothic fiction lacks any sign of sound reasoning. He is completely detached from reality and has almost no comprehensi

Acceptance to the National Honor Society

I am extremely honored to be selected by my teachers and other leaders at my Catholic high school for consideration to become a member of the National Honor Society ("NHS"). It pleases me to know that they believe I have met the eligibility requirements and am qualified to be a member of such a prestigious organization. I hope to confirm their belief in my qualifications by addressing in this paper how I uphold the NHS values of academic excellence, leadership, service through volunteerism, and character. First, I take honors courses at my high school. These courses are more difficult than regular courses. Even so, I had a GPA of 3.90 and 3.93 in the 9th and 10th grades, respectively. I didn't achieve these grades because I have a genius, which I am not, but through dedication and hard work. My parents and grandparents have instilled in me a strong work ethic with an eye toward building toward a successful future life, including contributing something of value

Short Story - Learning My Lesson

Matthew Jordan Narrative paper English comp. Mrs. Workman The Time I learned a Lesson I have learned lessons in many different ways, but the ways that stick with me the best is when I get caught and get in trouble. The time that I got caught shooting rabbits out of a moving vehicle I did not get caught by my dad or and of my relatives, I got caught by the cops. They let us of with a warning that we could be in big trouble if we did that any more. It was April 2014 and my dad went out of town for a business trip so all the kids went to my aunts house who lives down the road so I was at the house by my self. It was Thursday night and I went over to Garrett Millers house we talked about what we wanted to do that night and decided that we could go coyote hunting that night because we did not have a spotlight and I did not have my gun so we watched a movie and I went home. The next night I went over to his house with my gun in my truck and when I got to his house we talked about what we w

Telescope Research Paper

For centuries humans have looked up at the sun, the moon and the stars, but we could only see what our eyes allowed us to see. However during the early 17th Century the physicist Galileo improved and pointed one of the first telescope towards the sky which signaled a new era of astronomy (Dunbar, 1). The purpose of the telescope like any other optical device, is to produce outgoing parallel rays of light that are then focused on the retina by the relaxed eye (Falk, 168). During the early 17th century the physicist Galileo Galilei took the two-powered spyglass, which was used by the army to spot distant objects, and increased its magnification to the point where he could see the moons craters. This paper will explore types of telescopes, understand how they work, and will comprehend their uses and limitations. Telescopes can be categorized into the three core categories, refracting, reflecting and catadioptric. In most scopes the objective lens is the optical component which gathers

The Great Japanese Disaster

At 2:46 PM on March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake occurred 40 miles east of the Oshika peninsula of Tohoku Japan. This original earthquake lasted approximately 6 minutes, though there were hundreds of documented aftershocks that followed. The earthquake was felt throughout the majority of Japan, but Eastern Tohoku felt the earthquake much more intensely since they were closest to the source (Yoshida Testimony). The upthrust as a result of this earthquake created a massive tsunami that was considered "most serious" by the Japan Meteorological Society since the waves were over ten feet high. Some of these waves reached places like the Philippines, South America, and the United States, though the waves were much smaller than those that struck Japan. In the case of Japan, due to both the earthquake and the tsunami, approximately 16,000 people lost their lives and thousands more are still missing. Additionally, the disaster resulted in $300 billion in damage (Wall Street Jo
