Miss Granny - Film Review

South Korea is the country which well-known for its entertainment industry, especially in music and filming area. However, besides many films were made in the last decade, only series dramas are the mainstream type. Moreover, those dramas are always about love and romance. There are only few movies (not dramas) that are about family and culture, and the movie "Miss Granny" is one of them. The movie helps me realize how much similar Korea's culture and my Vietnamese's are, and also points out the differences between the two cultures. Miss Granny is a combination between fantasy genres, comedy. The movie is about a 74-year old widow named Oh Mal-Soon who is living a normal life with her son's family. However, Oh Mal-Soon does not satisfy about it. She feels like she has missed a lot because she spent the entire of her youth raising her son alone. One day, after steps out of the photo studio shop, she miraculously transform back to herself when she was 20 years old. Therefore,

Economic reform in 1986 has brought a great achievement for Vietnam economy. Their participation in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and World Trade Organization has made the country became more integrated into the world economy. Vietnam's economic growth rate in the 1990's was one of the highest in the world. According to the World Bank report, its average annual growth rate was measured 7.9% between 1990 to 2000 (World Development). Along these conditions, they did not only gain benefits but also difficulties. This paper will discuss the benefits and challenges during the growing period in Vietnam Economy, and how the 1997 Financial Crisis socially impacted the country as a whole. (PART A)The Doi Moi reform process that started in 1986 has fundamentally changed the standards of living in Vietnam. Such result can be observed through the reduction in poverty rate and increase in life expectancy. These are the primary indicators that allow

Drought and Water Conservation

We as society like to think that what we do with our personal interests won't affect our environment. But in this current drought in California many people's current interest and behavior may affect the drought both negatively and positively. Even though farmers aren't able to completely fix the water shortage on their own, they need help to switch the way they consume water just how people who live in the city need to realize how they waste their water. When it comes to determining how we should be responsible for the current water crisis there are many different views on who's to blame, some people that cities are to blame while others say farms waste most of the precious resource. They believe that farms should switch the way they water their crops (Johnston. page 2). Doing this, can help farmers grow 30 percent more food with 30 percent less water. (Johnson. page 2). On the other hand, others feel that since we don't have enough reservoirs to capture this water we need to find

Sir Gwain and the Green Knight

Sir Gwain and the Green Knight A Medieval Romance "Sir Gwain and the Green Knight" is a medieval romance but is by no means a love story. In the 14th century when this tale was written romances were broadly defined as very imaginative literature set in a fantasy world that features a battle between good and evil. More specifically they need to have an almost perfect hero, a long and dangerous quest, supernatural elements and a female figure of some sort. The story of "Sir Gwain and the Green Knight" meets all of these characteristics and is therefore a medieval romance. The key elements that make a story a medieval romance are imaginative literature, fantasy world setting and a battle between good and evil. All of these elements are demonstrated by Sir Gwain himself when his New Year's dinner with King Arthur and a few other knights is interrupted by a green stranger who proposes a "game". The strange green knight asks if someone will exchange a blow for blow and Sir Gwain is the

The North and South in 1861

After the astonishing development during the era of Industrial Revolution, both north and south develop two distinct economic systems. The north favored the huge profits brought by the factories, and the south became the Cotton Kingdom under the invention of cotton gin. Nevertheless, these differences inevitably led to the conflicts between north and south on the issue of slavery. North condemned the slavery as an immoral oppression, however south claimed slavery as their property and also their unalienable right. The beginning of heated debates in the nation gradually dissolved and consumed the Union and it's resources. Eventually, the struggle over slavery led South Carolina and other state seceded from the Union and established the Confederacy on 1861. The major reason for t

Elvis Presley and the Transformation of Rock n' Roll

This critique will contrast the pop song Jailhouse Rock with reggae track Legalize It. The songs will be compared in musical aesthetic, rhythmic properties, song form and structure, harmonic progression and melodic contour, the dynamic relationship between harmony and melody as well as the lyrical content. As my pop piece, I have selected the classic Jailhouse Rock by Elvis Presley. I define this as a popular song because it charted at number 1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Charts (All Music, 2014) and the UK Singles Chart (Official Charts, 2014). The song is set at about 150bpm. Seven seconds into the song (having already laid the foundations of the track with Scotty Moore's memorable riff), Elvis begins to sing the verse lyrics over the same intro Riff in a tenor/countertenor. At 18 seconds the song has already stepped into the chorus section, which delivers a short 12 bar blues turnaround in the same key but away from the initial riff. At 30 seconds it repeats the verse and chorus. A

China - Economy Growth and the Environment

China is the biggest producer, consumer and importer of coal and carbon dioxide emissions in the world now. The usage of energy has been increasing because of domestic demand, and exports have also been increasing, such as large shipping. Those problems also have been causing environmental problems such as air pollution and water pollution. China has increasingly produced CO2 emissions in millions of tons since 1978 to 2009. I will talk about how China reforms their economic and triggered by the liberal and progressive policies from 1978, and how China became an important country as an economic power to now. When the economy grew rapidly, more enterprises started to invest and trade the goods. Domestic demands and exports increased. China should implement a carbon tax to help reduce to CO2 production, and show other countries success to implement carbon tax to reduce the CO2 emission. Background Since 1978, Chinese industry rapidly grew during era of socialism. Chinese economy h

Record Labels and the Music Industry

A record label is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music; recordings or videos. A record label can often also be a publishing company that manages such brands and trademarks; coordinates the production, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos. They also conduct talent scouting and development of new artists ("artists and repertoire" or "A&R") and maintain contracts with recording artists and their managers. Record labels are now massive corporations that don't just own one record label but own a variety; these bigger labels are located in New York, los Angeles or Nashville. These large corporations usually consist of a headship company that owns more than one label, for example Warner Brothers Records owns Reprise Records and Maverick Records. BMG owns Arista Records, RCA and J Records. Independent record labels (or indie record label) are record labels that operate without funding from an outside org

In Search of Silence

Have you ever had those annoying neighbors who blast their music, speak really loud, or even walk with heavy feet throughout the dorm halls? I can honestly say that I am one of these people. I like to enjoy my time rough housing and doing what I want, rather than being confined to others needs and wants. Although I'm not the only one contributing to these obnoxious acts of foolishness. Some feel as if the noise that is being distributed is in excess and is a burden to what they are doing and complain and or report us about something that is in no way harming myself or either them. I believe that to please everyone we need a solutions that can allow us to be as loud as we want and to achieve overall silence to a confined area. Rather than worrying if the actions we are partaking in are disrupting others. First of all, I believe we have the right to have silence and to have not silence. There is importance to both being silent and not being silent and it effects us in many different ways

Roosevelt - The New Deal and Four Freedoms

In the aftermath of America's most horrific economic crisis, a strong new leader came about and forever changed the ways of our country. He redefined old terms, such as liberalism, and generated new ideas and policies, such as the Four Freedoms and the New Deal. This man, the thirty-second president of the United States of America, was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR's predecessor was former President Herbert Hoover, a rich conservative Republican who feared policies with any resemblance of socialism, and who believed that government should not get involved in industry or in people's financial lives. With no bias to make the rich richer, and no fear that America would become a socialist state, President Roosevelt realized the unstable economic conditions of the country, and he faced them brilliantly. He noticed that middle-class Americans were the heart of the economy, as consumer spending is approximately seventy-percent of the country's gross domestic product. With a diminishing middl

Gilgamesh - Reflective Essay

It is imminent that like all humans, inevitably Gilgamesh will die. Gilgamesh is not only a king, but becomes a hero. He is the ruler over the Sumerian city-state Uruk. He is like any other; more powerful, more alluring, more adventurous. Being that he is two-thirds god and only one-third human, Gilgamesh is sour that he is not immortal. He is forced to face death, not only of others but of his own. However, without death his life would be meaningless and the journeys within the epic would disappear. The Epic of Gilgamesh describes the battle of a man's adventure to accepting mortality while trying to find meaning in his life despite the ultimate fate of death. Gilgamesh is a tyrannical king. Although he is not a god, he acts as though. Acting as a despot over his people, he oppressively forces the building of ziggurats and other monuments. He rapes any woman to which he so desires. It is evident that he sees himself as a god. He is as physically attractive, astute, selfish, and str

Advancements in Sports Technology

If someone were to travel back in time to twenty years ago they would find that the sports technology used in that era was prehistoric compared to what it is now. Thanks to modern advancements and new technology, we have entered a new age of sports science. The modernization of extreme sports has provided massive advantages to individual sports and even though the advancements have taken away from the difficulty of those sports, they promote and enable high amounts of progression. The advancements in technology that improve the body and mind of athletes has played a huge roll in how sports have progressed over the years. Things like high performance pro athlete training programs, pre-work and protein supplements and sports psychology have improved competitive drive and impacted the way athletes are perceived. Programs like the EXOS pro performance programs which focus on performance and high altitude training, nutrition and physical therapy are designed to sculpt competitors into the

After being so familiar with McDonald I thought that this fast food should be the worlds most favorite

Night of the Living Dead

The Night of the Living Dead, directed by George A. Romero, has many parallels to social and environmental issues in the 1960s. When the movie is paid close attention to, it is a clear reflection between the civil rights movement, racism in the USA, environmental protection against nuclear power and the movie. All the characters represent a certain topic that the movie is secretly displaying. The movie and the issues with the civil rights movement, racism in the USA, in the environmental protection of nuclear power have clear similarities. Ben, played by Duane Jones, is a representation of the civil rights movement in the 1960s with his dominance and relationship with Harry. Ben is a very strong, dominant and determined character. Patty's Got A Gun by William Graebner

Patty's Got A Gun, by William Graebner is a fantastic insight and analysis to the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst. Graebner's book gives the reader a view inside what was going on in the Symbionese Liberation Army with Patty Hearst. Patty's Got A Gun depicts a true story of Stockholm syndrome: how Patty Hearst went from being an abducted victim to a member of the SLA. This is one of the most bizarre stories in America's history to date, and I've always found the story of Patty Hearst interesting, but this book has made me think about it differently. The way the story was portrayed by the news or any outsider, Patty looked as if she was brainwashed and had truly became a member of the SLA. The bank robbery, and the shooting at Mel's Sporting Goods that took place while Patty was a part of the SLA really changed the public view of Patty from victim to criminal, but Graebner's book shows us that she was really just doing what most would do: survive. On February 4, 1974, Patricia Hearst wa

Adult Stem Cell Research

Dear Genetics Policy Institute: I go to Science Hill High School. Recently, I have been researching the positives and negatives of adult stem cell research and embryonic stem cell research. Throughout my findings, I have discovered that I feel as if adult stem cell research is more beneficial for many people because adult stem cells offer a possibility of a renewable source of replacement tissues and cells, adult stem cells have the ability to differentiate in to other types of cells, and also adult stem cell research can further advance the possible cures and benefits that adult stem cells provide, that can further provide treatment for disea

Subfileds of Philosophy

Traditionally, there are five main subfields of philosophy. They are metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, and aesthetics. Epistemology is the subfield of philosophy concerned with the concept of knowledge, how we learn, and what we have the ability to learn. The main concerns of epistemology are the definition of knowledge, the sources of knowledge, the process of acquiring knowledge, the limitations of knowledge, and the validity of knowledge. It is describing how our mind creates our reality. Epistemology considers that knowledge can be obtained through one of two things; either through reason or experience. Two branches within epistemology are rationalism and empiricism. They differ regarding their knowledge basis; the source of their concepts and ideas. Rationalism and empiricism are very plainly the direct opposite of each other. Rationalism is the belief in innate ideas, reason, and the process of deduction. Empiricism is the belief in sense perception, induction, and that th

Rome's Dualistic View of Gladiators

Rome's fascination with the spectacle of gladiatorial combat is well documented. Gladiatorial combat both intrigued and enthused the Roman populace. The games were open to Romans of all walks of life but were primarily attended by the socially ambitious classes. The games became a place for social interaction; moreover, the spectacles were most often presented by a member of the Roman elite and on occasion, the emperor himself, therefore the Games were the place to be. The contests were a means to demonstrate the power and dominance of Rome to the populace and to the world at large. The fact that gladiatorial combats were the centerpiece of Roman spectacle afforded individual gladiators the opportunity to achieve fame, notoriety and, in some cases, even wealth. On the sands of the arena, cheered by the Roman multitude, the gladiator exhibited many of the virtues and martial ethics that Rome held dear. And yet gladiators and those who trained them were socially dishonored and despised

Obesity - Glucose and Lipid Profiles in Adolescents

It is not just a cosmetic consideration. It is a chronic medical disease that can lead to high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, and other serious illnesses. Accumulation of excessive body fat is known as obesity. Obesity is measured and defined in terms of body mass index (BMI). Body mass index is the arithmetical way of determining the proper weight range according to the height of an individual. A body mass index of more than 30kg/m2 indicates obesity. It is then categorized as severe, morbid and super obesity in the order as the BMI increases. Obesity is a lifestyle disease which is growing fast globally. Individuals of all age, gender and ethnicity are affected by this disease. Obesity reduces an individual's vulnerability to several other diseases. However, an alarming development of childhood obesity is being realized in the recent years. Even though we are living in a country with nearly unlimited economic power and technological advancement, it is also

A Letter from Tamar

Dear Family, I am sure that by the time that you receive this letter, you have spent many days looking for me. I do not feel bad for running away from you, but I understand that you deserve answers. It all began three weeks ago, when I met another Jew, Ayala. She met me whilst I was selling her cloth at the town square. I did not think much of her at first, but I now thank her for the marvels that she has done to me. After she over paid me for the simple cloth that I gave her, she asked me if I wanted to come to the inn that she works in. We took many abrupt steps on the painful gravel leading to her inn. It is a nice place, although it is very small. She led me to an empty room, which was not very difficult to find considering the fact that the place is usually empty. She knows that I am a jew, she could tell by the way that I greeted her at my booth. When we entered the room she gave me a pamphlet. I was slightly confused at first, but after reading it, I discovered it was a pamphle

Essay - An Excerpt from Othello

In this excerpt from William Shakespeare's tragic play "Othello ", the protagonist Othello mourns his actions towards his wife whom he murdered just moments before. The excerpt here given takes place in the very end of the play in act V, scene II. He curses himself for having been tricked into believing that his loyal wife had an affair with his friend Cassio and therefore murdered her. The excerpt takes place shortly after realising this and therefore provides deep insight into Othello's feelings and personality. In this passage Shakespeare attempts to show Othello at his weakest point and therefore finalises Othello's characterisation as a tragic hero. He uses multiple techniques such as imagery or repetition to emphasise his idea of Othello having degraded himself from an honest man to a tyrant in a matter of hours. In this passage Shakespeare uses Othello in order to create an almost sad and desperate mood by making him use a remorseful tone in his voice which is able to make it se

History of the NFL

The National Football League is the biggest, and by far the most popular sports league in the country. The start of the NFL completely revolutionized the American sport experience for both the fans and the athletes alike. Before the NFL, there was no football conference that brought teams together to compete against each other; there were only area-specific professional teams. The NFL brought together athletes and professionals from across the country for the first time in the history of the United States to what would eventually be the greatest game in the world. The NFL was originally founded in 1920, under the title ˜American Professional Football Conference.' Jim Thorpe, who was previously an Olympic competitor, developed the idea with several well-known footba

Dressing for Success

In the last decade the phrase dressing for success has become more relevant than in any other time before, especially in the business world. When the term "dress for success " was used in the 70's for the first time by the author John Malloy in his book by the same name the author coined this term to show how one's clothing, personal care and general appearance can have a huge impact on making a good first impression. Dressing for success is usually related with looking professional on the job, moreover it is linked to the job application process. One may ask the question, "Does it make a difference how people dress for an interview? " I would argue that it does. In my personal experience I have seen this principle of dressing for success applied many times. My mother owns a chain of clothings store and I was in charge of hiring new staff members and I saw this many times. When you are applying for a job you are selling yourself to a prospective employer. Although in most aspects of life you should not be judged by how you dress, in the career field that is the first imp

Morality With or Without God

Many Americans claim to derive their morals from the bible, and believe that is what they are, no questions asked. According to Oxford Dictionary, morals are defined as a person's standards of behavior or beliefs concerning what is and is not acceptable for them to do. Nowhere in the definition is it stated that morals come from God. They stem from the individual, their experiences, and are influenced by culture, time period, context and social norms. In a country founded on basic Christian beliefs, such as America, it is untrue that one needs religious guidelines to be moral and contribute to society. Noted philanthropist, Hollywood starts, and atheist, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have lived their adult lives without believing in God, or following religious guidelines, and the facts support that their contributions to society are equal to, even greater than in some aspects to those whom follow religious guidelines. The couple is affiliated with 39 different charities/foundations. (C
