Exclusion and Loneliness - Of Mice and MenThroughout the novella, "Of Mice and Men," John Steinbeck makes a point to emphasize the concept of loneliness and its damaging effects through the lives of his characters. Crooks, the discriminated black stable buck, along with the nameless and friendless wife of Curley, suffer from the same extreme and distressing loneliness. Both are unwelcome by the other men; both long for attention and to simply be accepted, yet both respond to this suffering through completely opposing methods. In the story, Crooks' scarring loneliness is forced on him as he is greatly segregated by the other men on the ranch. Being the only black man on the ranch, his workmates are cruel towards him by ignoring him and refusing him access to the bunk house. After spending half or more of his life in his lonely, isolated mind, Crooks finally comes to the conclusion that-since the other men treat him so much lower than themselves-he will treat them just as hostile and show them that he does not need their kindness to live. Crooks reveals this state of mind when he states firmly to Lennie, & |

My First DeerIt was a cold dark September morning when I got up into my tree stand. I set up at the corner edge of the woods looking over a soybean field. There was a slight breeze blowing northeast that day and the odds would be in my favor. I knew the deer would travel past me as they would try to grab a little snack before heading off to their bedding area. Sitting in the dark up in my tree stand, all I could do was anxiously wait for the sunlight to appear. It was not long before the sun slowly started to rise and everything around me started to move. The sparrows, cardinals and crows just chirping and flying everywhere. I cannot forget about the annoying woodpecker pecking away just right above me. The many sounds of insects especially crickets going off like crazy including the mosquitoes. I was set on a big old oak tree with branches hanging down to my left and right with fading green leaves camouflaging me. The soybean field to my left and the severely beaten down deer trail twenty yards |

To Autumn by John KeatsThe poem, "To Autumn"," written by the poet, John Keats, is an ode. An ode is, in my opinion, a tribute or dedication to a specific topic or subject. In this poem the effective topic is autumn. Throughout the poem, Keats describes the beauty of autumn through the use of techniques such as imagery and comparisons as well as using the human senses in order to make the reader feel as though he or she is truly in the setting of the poem. Throughout the poem, John Keats paints a picture of his autumn, through an extensive use of imagery. This helps the reader to better ˜experience' the poem, and to help them understand exactly how John Keats felt about autumn, especially due to the fact that this is his tribute or ode to autumn. Examples of his use of imagery consist of, ˜To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells,' and ˜the soft-dying day and touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue.' In the first quote, the words, ˜sell' and ˜plump' make the reader almost imagine that the gourd and hazel shells are actually expanding and growing in size as they become filled with ˜ripeness to the core'. The quote helps the reader to imagine that |

Assessment - Apple, Inc.Customer value is defined as the difference between what a customer gets from a product and what they pay for it. The gain the consumer will receive is then weighed against the cost the consumer must pay to gain that benefit. This is why businesses must provide their customers with the best price, product and service. The 7Ps (Price, Place, Promotion, Product, People, Processes and Physical Evidence) help companies reach its target market and with clear reviews of each segment they are able to reach marketing objectives that they have set. Apple has been very successful in reaching its target market due to their strong focus on all aspects of the marketing mix and reflecting it throughout marketing campaigns, product launches and customer experiences. Apple Inc. is made up of a 3-point marketing philosophy, which has been effective in creating and profiting from loyal customers. Their original 3 points are; empathy (understanding customers need a |

Political Discourse - ObamacareThe problems with our country's political discourse are many and grave, but an insufficient attention to Obamacare isn't among them. We have talked Obamacare to death, or at least into home hospice care. The "Obamacare " shorthand itself reflects our need to come up with less of a mouthful than "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, " given how regularly the topic recurs. "Obamacare"" is like "J. Lo"" or "KFC." " It saves syllables and speeds things along. So explain this: according to a recent poll, roughly 40 percent of Americans don't even know that it's a law on the books. Now if I learned that 40 percent weren't aware of when Obamacare was to be fully implemented or whether any of it had yet gone into practice or precisely how it's likely to affect them, I wouldn't be surprised or distressed. Obamacare is nothing if not unwieldy and opaque: "Ulysses " meets "Mulholland Drive. " The people confused about it include no small number of the physicians I know and probably a few o |

The High School JungleHave you ever walked through a dense, nearly impassable jungle? Well, if you've ever visited and/or attended a High School in your entire life, then you have. Obviously, that's a metaphor. You see, a High School is absolutely flooded with freshmen going to their lockers, walking or sprinting from class to class, or even trying to buy "darts " from all the druggies and bad kids at our school. The 5 minutes you have going from class to class is your biggest life struggle. Sucking in, squeezing and squeaking past all of the little brats, saying excuse me every 5 seconds, yet they don't acknowledge you one bit and keep walking like they're king shit (pardon my language, had to emphasize what they think their rank in the High School food chain is). Now, how about I take you on a tour through this jungle, and explain and show you what it's like to be a sophomore, junior, or senior, having to deal with all these little freshmen. First off, there are rules in High School. I don't mean the common No hands, no feet, no mean words. I mean ranks, and what the job and rules are for each rank. Freshmen, ah yes, the "fresh meat ". |

Indian Art - Aesthetics and SymbolismIndian Art has been through many winds of change. Artwork from the earliest Indus Valley civilizations and the Harappan period spawned a revolutionary new wave, thus inspiring many to carry on the somewhat crude (to western eyes) but amazing blend of skill, mastery and imagination that became the hallmark of popular Indian folk art. This essay will highlight some of the aesthetic differences of Indian and Western art, from a technical, stylistic and symbolic point of view. The principles of beauty and artistic taste of early Indian art, and indeed its people, from the simplest commoner to the highest ruler are close to the polar opposite of what its perceived to be in the west. Where there was the seemingly super-human alpha male, pale white muscular statues of Greco-Roman gods who are seemingly perfect in proportion, towering intimidatingly over land or sea and exercising their right to power with the very wrath they ensue with their scepters and command of the elements, there was als |

My Life and Rites Of PassageOne of the main concepts I remember talking about in class was a concept by Arnold van Gennep, called the rites of passage. This concept is basically like a ritual or event that makes a person's transition to one status to another. So kind of like a celebration of a milestone in ones life. My rite of passage would definitely have to be my transition from high school graduation to college, primarily because that was a very stressful point in my life. I went through the three stages of passage, which were separation, liminal, and consummation. I was raised that after high school you have to go off to college. You couldn't really opt out of not going, mainly because my family puts academics on a very high pedestal. You wer |

Arguments for and Against GodThere are many arguments for and against the existence of a God. Some have been eloquently thought out and backed, others not so much. We hear constant ramblings and lectures of how everything began, why it is, and how to act from all sorts of perspectives around the world. The theological standpoint is a highly scrutinized yet vastly followed position that, depending on your own stance, is holy gospel or horrid gossip. One strong argument for the existence of God is the "Cosmological Argument" that because there was a "big bang" or center of movement in the universe, then there was a beginning, and something had to start it. This "prime mover" had to begin the sequence of moves ex nihilo, being that first cause of all that is today and will be in the future. We know through science that every action has a reaction that will produce another reaction and so on. So what was that first action? Only God would have had the power to do so and a theological God |

Watsky - Music IconIn the music industry, it seems as if as the years pass by more and more artists "sell-out" or lose their "je ne sais quoi." Watsky is different, coming back to Dallas after two years (he was here for the Sloppy Seconds tour in 2012) and rocking the Cambridge Room in House of Blues for the second time. Starting off the show, Anderson Paak got the room grooving to a new kind of sound. By mixing electronic music with R&B, he has gained a new fan in me. After a few amazing songs and mixes, he brought out the much awaited "super duper" Kyle. Kyle's fan base has grown tremendously since he dropped "Beautiful Loser." A unique voice and lyrical strength intertwined to created an amazing performance for everyone in the room. Managing to create brilliant bass lines and a rhythm that left nobody standing still, Kyle's opener left us wanting more. "Sex and Super Smash Bros" was a crowd winner, as was |

Fat Kids for Life - Childhood ObesityChildhood obesity has become a growing problem in our society although school lunch programs, organizations, and many people have tried to assist to prevent this. Unfortunately, even with their efforts the rate of children who are obese is still growing. While countless efforts have been applied to remedy the situation, not every person can agree what is the main cause of childhood obesity. Although genetics, advertising, and society do play a role in childhood obesity in my opinion the parents are the main cause. I believe parents are the main cause of childhood obesity because the parent should be aware of what their child is eating, teaching their child about portion control, exercise, and eating healthy themselves. It is time for parents to take responsibility for their child's health and well-being. Today with the increase number of duel parent employment it is difficult to be fully aware of what your child is eating. In the article Childhood Obesity by Jennifer Bishop she states "It has been hypothesized that increased ra |

Racial Disparity in Criminal Law and JusticeIntroduction As quoted by Emile Durkheim, a society without crime is impossible.1 Even if the standard of determining criminal acts is set high, less severe acts will still be considered as crime. As there is no chance of eliminating crime out of society, punishment is an essential tool to create a fair society for it having 4 main goals: deterrence, retribution, rehabilitation and incapacitation. Setting a fixed standard and guideline of punishment aims to convince potential criminals that the crime is not worth the time (general deterrence), to equally and fairly distribute punishment among similar illegal acts (retribution), to help and not just punish the criminals in order to remove further threat to society (rehabilitation), and to detain criminals to eliminate risk of a repeated offence (incapacitation).2 According to UN declaration article 7, the United Nations, all are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to equal protection of the law. All are ent |

Research Paper - Kidney FailureSome believe that women have a higher risk of having kidney failure than men, but there has yet to be a definite answer on this issue. The kidneys are placed in the middle lower region of the back, right below the ribcage. The kidneys act as a sophisticated strainer, they filter and estimated 200 quarts of blood per day and at least two of those quarts is waste and extra water (Lin). This extra water and waste is then turned into urine, that then moves its way down into tubes known as ureters which send them to the bladder where its sits until time of urination. It does this to keep the correct balance of salts and chemicals in the body and blood. If blood flow to the kidneys is affected or the tubules are not working properly because of damage or disease, problems may occur. Having a family history of kidney failure and losing both my grandmother and great grandmother to it, I became interested in the topic of kidney failure. Having a family history of kidney failure it is important t |

Life Span DevelopmentLate adulthood is generally considered to begin at about age 65. Physical development in this stage is different for every individual because people age biologically ate different rates, some 85-year-olds may appear younger than 75-year-olds. That is why chronological age, the number of years a person has lived, is an inaccurate basis of functional age. Functional age is a term for a person's age that is determined as a measure of their functional capabilities that have been indexed to a standard. It shows how far along their body systems have developed and it's a glimpse of their emotional and logical maturity. As I have observed with Mary, even in the age of 77 she is still very much active, not just physically but also mentally. Her favorite past time is doing karaoke at her house with friends and although her eyesight is failing, she still spends a lot of time reading her favorite suspense/ |

Video Games in a Violent WorldAs the video game industry releases games with higher resolution, more realism, and a higher amount of violence, blood and gore, a debate has raged on for many years. Do these violent games have a link to violent crimes such as murder, rape, or even assault? Perhaps, this link is just a scapegoat used to veer away from the more serious attributions to the violent crime. This link has been studied since the 1980s by social scientists(Carey 1). There could be reasons as to why this debate has lasted so long, whether it is bias or unknown variables that are not thoroughly investigated. When an extremely violent crime occurs such as a school shooting, the media seems to blow it out of proportion, and will focus on one thing about that shooter, video games and do their best to iterate that the suspect became that way because of the games. If this is true, then perhaps a fallacy is also true in which a person who plays a flight simulator is a pilot, or even a person who plays a professional |

Biography of SiddharthaIn Siddhartha, By Herman Hesse, Siddhartha strives to make sense of the many worlds into which he has walked, struggling to maintain the hope of ultimate serenity throughout each. These worlds have helped to shape Siddhartha, from the ideal beginning, the painful seeking of a passionate young Samana, the luscious world of possessions and money to the old days of a man whose every wrinkle carries a wisdom of its own. Gathering a worldly understanding based not on knowledge, but experience alone, this journey-that of Samsara-teaches Siddhartha the lessons he knew were impossible to learn from a teacher. In his early years, Siddhartha is an impatient and hotheaded youth who feels the pull of knowledge and the stirring of a great desire to learn and to know. He becomes dissatisfied with the beautiful place he has always called home, and grows tired of Govinda's adorations: Siddhartha had begun to feel the seeds of discontent within him. He had begun to feel that the love of his mother and father, and also the love of his friend Govinda, would not always make him happy, give his peace, satisfy and suffice him (5). Discontented, Siddhartha longs to find the answer |

Never Giving UpBoom. Bang. Pow. Soft yet powerful slams of clutched fists strike the desk. Yes, I was angry. Grades had just been put in and as usual I didn't do as well as I had expected. I had received a grade below passing on my essay, yet it infuriates me because I know I can do better. I know I have the capacity of formulating the most astonishing essay ever. The real question is, 'why haven't I done it yet?' One approach to my dilemma is simple, I'm not creative enough. This can't be right, right? I mean, I see myself as an optimistic guy with rich taste for adventure and imagination filled with adrenaline . In fact, at this very moment, I picture myself skydiving off of the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. Quantum Teleportation and Future PosibilitiesQuantum teleportation is a process by which quantum information, like the exact state of an atom or photon, can be transmitted exactly from one location to another, with the help of classical communication and previously shared quantum entanglement between the sending and receiving locations. In other words, it is the ability to transfer information instantly from one point to another with no time delay. This type of technology would be immensely beneficial to the world since it would allow us to have more advances in science and technology, learn more about space exploration than ever before, create new ways to communicate in the future, and much more. Quantum teleportation would not only be useful to scientists, but it would also be very valuable for business and military usage. For example, many businesses and corporations, especially those that are in danger of closing down, depend on fast and accurate communication since this factor alone could be what can save a company from clos |

Identifying and Analyzing LifeFrom the extermophile Archeabacteria residing on volcanic rims to humans cozy in their homes and everything in between; there is not a single place on Earth barren of life. Whether visible or requiring heavy microscopic machinery, the world is filled with life. Due to the extreme variety of life, a problem arises in finding a linking factor which can be used to form a definition that properly picks out all that is meant by the word life. The current definition of life is a chemical structure that resists entropy and can participate in darwinian evolution. It is important that there is a consistent and functional definition of the life because there must be a way to determine when something is no longer alive. This would be useful both on our own planet in determining when something can de considered alive or dead, and in our exploration of the universe. It has proved difficult to define life on other planets and an adequate definition is needed to do so. Through defining an adequate th |

America - A History of WarsThis is the time period I have been patiently waiting for. The part of history that catches me the most. I understand that everything that leads up to the 1900's is important, but I feel it interests me because it is closer to the time I am living in. My ancestors fought for my freedom to be here today. I wish the World Wars, the Cold War, and the Holocaust did not occur, but it is what shapes America today and the society I live in. The technology over the past century has advanced greatly. Albert Einstein made a great contribution to science. In 1905, building onto electromagnetism and the study of light, he proposed a special theory of relativity that held that time and mass were relative to the observer's frame of reference. His theory was confirmed quickly by other physicists studying the speed of light. Einstein made contributions to quantum mechanics, determining that sub-atomic particles, such as neutrons, protons, and electrons, perform at time like particles of matter and other times they act like light energy moving |

George Washington - Great Military StrategistThis great American country that we know and love today was not always the world super power that people understand the United States to be currently. There was a multitude of events throughout American history that lead to the development of the prowess that our country shows off in multiple facets. Our country had to go many extensive wars, whether external or internal. Before all this though we had to break off from the national super power Great Britain dating back to the 18th century. It was through them that the development of the first thirteen colonies arose. Long story short friction between the two arose quickly and the colonies felt the need separate themselves and declare independence. Unfortunately for the colonies Great Britain refused to let them go so easily which resulted in what is now known as the Revolutionary War. Up against arguably the most elite militia and navy forces of its time the colonies were in need a leader that the colonist could rally around. The colo |

Speech and Hearing DisordersI had the amazing opportunity to interview a Speech Language Pathologist named Tina Dowling. Tina works in an elementary school, specializing in Speech Sound Disorders in Children. Working with Speech Disorders in Children means early diagnosis and intervention are extremely important. One on One's and visiting Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classrooms help a Speech Pathologist listen to children, and assess whether or not they have a problem with their speech. Talking with teachers, and parents are also important in assessing a child. There are many steps in order to diagnose a child with a Speech Disorder. The first step includes looking for signs that a child has a Speech problem. The next step is watching the child, studying their case history, and testing them to diagnose them with a Specific Speech Disorder. The final step is to perform the appropriate therapy needed to help the child reach their full potential. In order to understand these steps, and the reaso |

Women and Gender Roles in IslamIn our modern society there are often very diverse views regarding the status and roles of women. If the idea is taken through a religious perspective, there exists a wide possibility that in certain religions women are seen as inferior to their male counterparts. Particularly in Islam, this notion of oppression and gender inferiority can be interpreted through various lenses. Islamic history, the life of prophet Muhammad and certainly the Qur'an all offer evidence that gender equality should indeed exist between men and women. However, there are very distinct interpretations of this notion that are whether made by scholars or influenced by societal norms which shape the gender views in Islam. In early Islamic history women have been individuals that molded the perspective of being strong models, leaders, and forces in history. One of the most crucial figures was without a doubt Khadijah, the wife of prophet Muhammad. She is described as being a loyal figure in Muhammad's life that su |

Categories of MurderThe word murder is one of those words that give you the chills just because of how common the crime has become in today's society. Murder is defined as the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. An important fact about murder is that murder falls under the category of homicide crimes. Murder can fall into two offenses which our first degree and second degree murder. First degree murder in most states is defined as a unlawful killing that is Willing and premeditated. This means that the murder was committed after being planned and waiting for a specific time to approach the victim. A good example is Jonathan comes home to find his wife in bed with the neighbor Richard. Jonathan is highly upset and is losing his mind and three days later Jonathan weeds behind a car parked in front of Richards front door and when Richard comes out, Jonathan suits Richard 3 times and kills him instantly. I believe that is a perfect example of first-degree murder. Second degree mu |

The Decoy Effect and RelativityBefore reading this chapter, I had never heard of the idea of having a decoy option for something. The decoy is option that is slightly less appealing so that you choose the option that is supposedly the best for the consumer. The decoy effect is when you choose that option that is supposedly better instead of the less appealing option. I honestly believe that Ariely did a fantastic job, even if I did not fully comprehend the concept at the time, of explaining what the decoy effect was to the reader. Since I obviously didn't entirely understand the concept, I conducted a secondary Google search and found the following definition of the decoy effect. The search told me that the decoy effect is "the phenomenon whereby consumers will tend to have a specific change in preference between two options when also presented with a third option that is asymmetrically dominated". One place where he accomplished this was when he discussed the advertisement for the three options for the Economist subscription. There was an op |
