Learning and Teaching English Globally

The four issues that I feel affect the teaching and learning of English worldwide are the impact of politically motivated educational policies, the debate over the value of native English teachers over non-native teachers, English-language testing based on L1 standards and the reasons behind Outer and Expanding Circle learners learning English. Firstly, the politics of nationalism and the educational policies encouraging the use of inner circle varieties of Standard English affect the teaching and learning of English in many countries. In Inner Circle countries such as the US, the 'English Only' movement, which insisted that America had only 'room for one language' aimed to 'subtract rather than add a language' (Jenkins 105), forcing L2 English learners to either 'sink or swim'. This was detrimental to L2 English learners as they suffered from alienation, ostracism, victimization, ethnic illiteracy and the loss of cultural identity (Jenkins 106). In Outer Cir

Andrew Laeddis in Shutter Island

The year is 1954. That was nine years after the German unconditional surrender, putting an end to the Second World War; the year when the first hydrogen bomb test was announced to be conducted successfully in the U.S.; and the year when the conflict between two schools of psychiatric treatment, transorbital lobotomy operation and psychoanalysis with pharmacy therapy, gradually turned white-hot. Something has an end like war, but something is continuing on and on, such as the surviving soldiers and their indelible trauma. The shadow of blood and death darkens their life. Moreover, their adamant belief of justice has wavered. Once their faith is shattered, their judgment of right and wrong blurs. In that way, hero might turn to be monster. Then the nightmare comes. The film, Shutter Island, which is directed by Martin Scorsese, follows Andrew Laeddis' (Leonardo DiCaprio) desperate struggle between reality and delusion, sobriety and insanity. As an ex-soldier in Second World War, Laeddi

LeBron James and Kobe Bryant

The National Basketball Association has been around now for sixty-eight years. This league produces a large number of basketball stars and fans every year. Throughout their respective careers, basketball fans have compared the achievement, athletic style and popularity of two of the most recognizable basketball players ever to play the game, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. If you were an owner in the NBA, who would be your first, pick to play on your team James or Kobe? This argument is a very heated topic throughout the basketball world. LeBron James and Kobe Bryant are two of the greatest to ever play however there different styles of play, accomplishments, and off court endorsements make them unique. Bryant's game is distinctive because of his quick skilled footwork, basketball IQ, and shooting ability. However, James's style of play relies on

One Vote Can Make a Big Change

One of the major concerns in the US is the number of voters casting ballets during elections. The U.S. Government is always trying to promote ways of convincing people to vote. If even a small percentage of eligible voters decided to vote in the main battle states, the entire outcome of an election could change. As I mentioned before, even a slight change in the amount of votes could affect the entire outcome. For example, President Obama succeeded in winning Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and Pennsylvania in the 2012 election. Statistics show if Mitt Romney won these same states he would have become president (Kranish).

Movie Review: The Babadook

The Babadook is an Australian horror movie directed by Jennifer Kent. It follows the story of a single mother, Amelia, who is still struggling to get over the death of her husband. Her son, Samuel, is also causing her issues due to his behavioural problems. The film takes a dark turn as a supernatural being from a horror story she read to her son, 'The Babadook,' begins to plague her. The movie quickly establishes the broken relationship between mother and son through the distance between the two characters on the screen, they are often shown as being quite far away from each other, often with no contact at all. An example of this is during a shot of Samuel and Amelia eating dinner together at the dining table, the two are shown to be sitting at opposite ends of the table which conveys the distance between the two in both a literal and emotional sense. To add to this message during the shot the two are shown to be eating in silence, the only noise is the sound of their cutlery. The emotional distance is reinforced again by physical distance between the two, when Samuel has a

Facing the Consequences

One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, and with a willingness to accept the penalty. I once was arrested for trespassing in my own building, and I couldn't believe the consequences I had to face. I understood that I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but my reason for being arrested, and taken to jail was pointless. My punishment was very unfair. It all began on the roof of my building. Nothing was running through my mind that day, but only to just have complete fun. That, I did. I called up some friends, which were two females. I felt as if I were a pimp but with no money. The two females instantly came to pay me a visit as soon as I messaged them to show up. When on the arrival, they we very noisy, energetic and dizzy from lots of alcohol beverages. Suddenly I knew it would be an awkward moment because I wasn't expecting them to have such behavior. The developmen

Savagery in Lord of the Flies

Uncivilized, barbarous, fierce these are some synonyms for the word savage. It is apparent throughout history that people are not born savages, they transform into them. The belief that savagery finds someone is clear as crystal in William Golding's Lord of the Flies. William Golding wrote Lord of the Flies after being in World War 2; perhaps this is the anecdote or the explanation of how someone can become a savage. Golding's book illustrates the remarkable realities that face someone stranded on an island. A group of boys stuck on an island fight to survive while turning into entirely different people than they were. One boy in particular drastically changes into someone he wasn't before. William Golding incorporates civilization vs. savagery, through Jack, to prove that when boys are left alone on an island to survive, they're killer instincts will subdue them in order to survive. To start, Jack was choir boy who never imagined that he would kill for survival or pleasure. To start

Life of a Farmer During the Great Depression

During the 1930s the United States of America faced their worst years of economic despair. This event was known as The Great Depression. The depression was caused by the stock market crash that occurred during 1929. Many Americans were affected by the stock market crash from the wealthiest to the poorest. These people included the farmers who solely relied on farming as a source of income. The effect of the stock market crash was leaving people penniless. People then had no money to buy the products of the farmers. As a result of this, farmers had to lower the prices of their products. As the depression continued, another disaster occurred that made the impact of the depression even worse. This was called the Dust Bowl, in where farmers were not able to produce any more crops due to the dust that occupied the land. The effects of the Dust Bowl were farmers becoming in debt and being prone to diseases. As a result of this, the government decided to help the farmers who were not able to

The Truth Behind Extraterrestrial Life

Is the human race really alone in this vast universe called home? The universe is home to the human species but is there a possibility that humans are one of many other species living in the universe? Well the truth of the matter is if other species (extraterrestrials) exist elsewhere in the universe, the human race would be impacted dramatically, both in a positive and negative way. When handling the topic of extraterrestrial life, religion and science continuously clash. That is why centuries ago the talk and debate over extraterrestrial life was rather limited. During this time religion and God explained life, how life came to be, and why humans were on Earth. No one ever really took a more logical standpoint using science to explain life because the research and belief was not present. But there were a few humans who opened their minds to new ideas and the possibilities of life; these same humans who challenged the word of God. These humans who believed in alien life were diagnosed

Middle and Modern English

Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales is a well-known and publicized text. For hundreds of years, students of English and Literature have studied this text and worked within its language. In this study, the author will compare the language that he used as a Middle English speaker and writer to the language and words with which a modern reader would speak. There will be an analysis of the changes in English that is noted, as well as a description of patterns of similarities in phonology for the words that are similar to the way they are spelled in modern English. There are many instances in Chaucer's text that can be derived by a modern day reader. By using phonetics and context, readers can determine the meanings of Chaucer's words in some cases. Many other are very difficult and need a deeper source for etymological changes. Instances of the simpler ones to decipher include "sondry londes " in line 14 (Chaucer), "trouthe " (Chaucer 46), "bataille " (Chaucer 61), and "hoote summer " (Chaucer 396). If one were to look at the text around these words or phrases, their meanings could be determined. "Sondry londes " means "various countries " and while "sondry " might be difficu

Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin

Prior to World War II, both Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler rose to power in their respective countries and brought about great change during their ensuing reigns. While both men are notoriously known as two of the most evil men in history, it is obvious that they accomplished great things for their countries. Following Lenin and Trotsky's revolution and reign in Russia, Stalin began his massive political, social, and economic changes in 1928 with the First Five Year Plan, which was designed to cause rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture. After the Bolsheviks or proletariat won the Marxist theory of class war, they did not know where to go with the country. The winning of this class war was Mark's utopian fantasy, so while Lenin and Trotsky tried to figure out what to do after winning the social war, Stalin was eventually allowed to rise to power. While Stalin somewhat continued Lenin's work and built upon the foundation that Lenin built, Hitler took a broken a

Antifederalists and the Constitution

It is hard to imagine the United States of America with any other form of government than the one that is in use today; however, between the years 1763 and 1788, America was unsure what kind of nation it wanted to be. The Articles of Confederation, which was the government document being used at the time, were ineffective, and they needed to be revised a considerable amount or replaced all together. In 1787, the Constitution was written, and it brought the debate over America's future to the forefront of public discussion. For the Constitution to be used, it first needed to be ratified, but this was not an easy task. Although many people liked the direction the Constitution pointed the United States, others did not. There were two main groups of people in this debate; the Federalists and the Antifederalists. The Federalists wanted the larger and more powerful national government in order to unify the Americans that the Constitution would create, while the Antifederalists feared the pr

Themes of Greek Tragedy in Oedipus the King

In Robert Fagles' translation of the play "Oedipus the King", Sophocles explores many important themes of Greek tragedy such as fate and free will, wisdom and knowledge, determination and power through the effective use of his language, symbols and motifs and setting. In this essay, I will discuss how these themes are clearly portrayed to the reader and how the story is made more powerful through the use of them. Firstly, the story is one that introduces the main character, Oedipus, very positively. As soon as the play opens, he is thought of one who is very compassionate, a good leader and is very concerned about the well being of his people. This is evident on pages 12-13 when Oedipus says, "I am ready to help, I'll do anything." Thi

Clouded Judgement in Macbeth

Arthur Koestler, a British journalist and author once said, "Courage is never to let your actions be influenced by your fears. " This quote would prove true in the story of Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare. Macbeth is one of the leaders in King Duncan's army, and is known as a fierce warrior with a lot of ambition. Three witches tell Macbeth that he will one day be king which leads Macbeth to kill Duncan, for the throne. Macbeth travels down a path which eventually leaves him distraught and paranoid. One flaw Macbeth has is that he is very easily influenced, and it is this flaw, that eventually leads to his downfall. Macbeth is negatively influenced by mainly three different sources, Lady Macbeth, The Apparitions, and the three witches. Lady Macbeth has a huge influence on Macbeth. So much so that she is able to convince him to kill Duncan. This is evident when Lady Macbeth says, "O, never Shall sun that morrow see! Your face, my thane, is as a book where men May read strange matters. To beguile the time, Look like the time. Bear welcome in your eye, Your hand, your tongue. Look like th' innocent flower, But be the serpent under't. He that's coming Must be

The Developing Australian Economy

Australia is one of the fastest developing economies in the world. Australia is the 13th largest economy in the world as per nominal GDP (current prices) and 17th biggest as indicated by GDP (PPP). In the previous two decades, Australia has enjoyed in a time of uninterrupted economic development – an average of 3.3 percent in real GDP growth yearly. Australia has an overall well diversified economy supported by the quality of its services and resources industries. A country's economy is effected by various factors but three core indica¬tors effecting Australian economy are GDP, Unemployment, and Inflation. Other important indica¬tors are incomes (including income distribution) and productivity. The gross domestic product (GDP) is one the primary indicators used to gauge the health of a country's economy. It represents the total dollar value of all goods and services produced over a specific time period – one can consider it as the size of the economy. The starting

Emily Dickinson - A Different Side of Death

Currently, we live in a society that is engulfed and enlightened by death. Society enjoys the entertainment and the idea of the afterlife, and though this is seen through supernatural elements such as vampires and zombies; the idea of life after death is quite comforting. Death is defined as "the end of life: the time when someone or something dies". In Emily Dickinson's "Because I could not stop for Death-"death is a prominent theme. Instead of Dickinson portraying death as something to be feared, she portrays death as a calming ride into another life; something that one should enjoy. Emily Dickinson's use of literary devices helps us explore her abnormal view of death. In "Because I could not stop for Death-"the speaker, speaks to us as a spirit reminiscing about the day she passed away. In the first stanza, the speaker is picked up in a carriage by death itself. The speaker describes death a gentleman who "kindly stopped for me-". Dickinson uses personification to make it appear as if death is a man. The tone is also, established as the speaker surprisingly seems tranquil as if she knew death was on its way. Th

Aspects of Civil Disobedience

In order to properly characterize and understand all aspects of civil disobedience we must look at where the line of disobedience stands and who crosses it. This country was founded on the idea of democracy. Our proud and dedicated fore fathers of the Constitution created this nation on a basis of morality and true freedom. Unfortunately, this dream has been contorted. Twisted to fit the ever growing greed and power thirsty idealisms of the powerful and wealthy politician. Our country has been raped of its true seed that it started from.  I believe that this country's main problem is that it's run by a majority of white males, and of these men, not many younger than their forties. Where's our equal representation of every populous? These people have lost touch with what they call, their number one resource, it is youth. Yes, they were all young at one time as well, but times rapidly change. These quick changes can easily cause confusion among our leaders, and this results in poor decisions based

The Tragedy of Romeo And Okonkwo

Have you ever read two completely different books and felt that the characters are so much alike? This is the case with Okonkwo and Romeo who were the protagonist of their stories. Romeo is from the well respected play Romeo and Juliet and Okonkwo comes from the novel Things Fall Apart. They have their differences but are also similar in many ways and have both been through tough conditions. Throughout the book, Okonkwo is often associated with fire and seen as manly, while romeo is handsome, sensitive and often immature. Although they are very different in personalities they have been through the same situations and carry the same burden. Those similarities are getting exiled from their homeland, emotions driving them to kill people and suiciding at the end, causing them to solve the conflict of their stories. In both stories Okonkwo and Romeo get exiled from their homeland. Romeo gets banished from his town Verona because of killing Tybalt. The prince had the decision to decide w

Education and Minority Students

In the lives of most minority students, education is seen as essential; it's a dream that is still being interpreted. If we know nothing else, we know that education is important because it determines the future one is going to have, and in other to have this future certain obstacles needs to be overcome by minorities student with the help of the government and their institution of choice. Being a minority student myself, I can certainly understand and agree with some of the points listed in this article one which I recently spoke about with a friend. The article mentioned lack of community as one of the factors that influence the retention of minority students in institution and I am very inclined to agree. From personal experiences, I can agree that lack of community influences the academic success of students which in turn affects their retention rate. Throughout my community college days and up until last semester, there were only about one or two people

Human Rights in Brazil

Since March 2011, the Syrian Arab Republic has undergone extreme political turmoil due to the protests that began demanding more human freedom in the country, and later led to the demand for the resignation of the incumbent president, Bashar Al Assad, due to government attacks being set off to protesters. Being a previous victim of an authoritative, tyrannical, and militant government from 1964-1985, the Federative Republic of Brazil has since given it's utmost attention, concern and sympathy towards the situation. Being the seventh largest economy in the world , and the largest and leading country in South America, and a part of different international alliances such as BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, C

Field Branches of Psychology

Within the world of psychology are many different fields. Each field specializes on a particular branch of psychology such as clinical, cognitive, developmental, sports, abnormal, forensic, industrial-organizational, and social psychology just to name a few. After reading up on the very interesting differences between the branches, I found industrial-organizational psychology to be the most intriguing. The main goal in industrial-organizational psychology (or I/O psychology for short) is to maximize performance in the work place. An I-O psychologist evaluates the productivity of a workplace and how the employees' attitudes and behaviors influence the success (or lack of success) in a business. An I-O psychologist does not only focus on how employees affect their workplac

The Dead by James Joyce

In the novel "The Dead," by James Joyce, Gabriel Conroy is Joyce in character form. James Joyce was an outcast to society and in this novel it is understood that he is because of the way Gabriel Conroy acts. Being uncomfortable with society, Joyce made Gabriel have awkward encounters in which he gets angry but he is forced to hold his anger back. Gabriel Conroy holds his anger inside and expresses the outer facade that society expects him to wear. During the early nineteen hundreds, the encounter that Gabriel had with Lily was very inappropriate. Gabriel tried to talk to Lily about marriage and such, which was not appropriate for the occasion or possibly ever. After the conversation, which was brief, Gabriel was angry because of the way she had acted when he tried to cover up his unsuitable actions towards Lily with money. He thought she was unappreciative and he was angry because she had acted bitter toward what he thought was an act of kindness. He did not want others to see he was angry and he tried to get rid of all signs of his anger before he was to meet up with hi
