Gender Roles in Frankenstein

Due to the time period in which a book is written, many misperceptions in the reality of relations between men and women as a utilitarian society arise. Mary Shelley explicitly expresses the unequal, yet made to seem inertial distribution of power and ranking solely into the hands of men in Frankenstein. Frankenstein was published in 1818 and it is my conviction that this fed the bias on the power struggle between the sexes. The power, and lack thereof exemplified between men and women in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein serves as my truth in identifying the trend of women being placed under a stereotypical jurisdiction, which bars all female characters from manifesting proper demonstrations of their inner selves. There have been many scenarios in which the female characters of the novel are viewed in lesser light than men. It is this ill treatment and negligence of a woman's true capabilities and worth that makes Mary Shelley' s Frankenstein a perfect example of female submissiveness in literature. The author characterizes each woman as passive, disposable

Pierre Elliot Trudeau

Pierre Elliot Trudeau was the fifteenth Prime Minister of Canada. During his sixteen years in office, he made a lot of important decisions and contributions for and to Canada. But did the contributions he made for Canada, make us a better nation? This essay will prove that Pierre Elliot Trudeau made Canada a better nation with his contributions, with the examples of the Official Language Act in 1969, the signing of the Constitution Act in 1982 and the Multicultural Act in 1971. In 1969, only a year that Trudeau had entered office, he passed the Official Language Act. This Legislation made French and English the official languages in Canada and all federal offices had to offer service in both languages. The act that had been made in 1969, stated that, "the English and the French languages are the official languages of Canada, for all purposes of the Parliament and Government of Canada and posses and enjoy equality of status and equal rights and privilege

Overview of Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Body dysmorphic disorder, formerly known as dysmorphophobia, is the fixation with an illusory defect in a typical persons appearance. Patients with the disorder are consumed by the thought that something about their body is extremely unattractive. They express excessive apprehension with a non-existent physical defect and become so preoccupied that they act upon many time-consuming rituals of to try and fix the defect and incessantly check their appearances. Facial flaws and abnormalities are the most chief focuses of patients with body dysmorphic disorder, informally known as BDD. Specific flaws include large noses, poor skin, baldness, wrinkles, and anything the patient remarks to be unattractive about themselves. However, while a patients face is commonly the primary concern, any body part can be the main concern. This typically includes deformities of body size or shape, and even disfigurements of sexual body parts (Allen & Hollander, 2000). With these preconceived notions about

Ludwig Van Beethoven

Background Many people may consider Bach and Mozart to be the greatest composers of the classical era, but they forget that there was a time when Beethoven was famous for his work. Beethoven was born in Bonn(today the capital of West Germany), Germany on December 1770; unfortunately no one knows what date. Since Beethoven was baptized on December 17, 1700, many people thought he was born a day before because according to law and custom, the baby is supposed to be baptized within 24 hours after birth. Even the year is sometimes questioned, quite a lot of composers thought that he was born on 1772. Beethoven had two younger brothers who had survived into adulthood. Caspar who was born on 1774 and Johann who was born on 1776. Beethoven's father had began to teach him music with an extraordinary brutality that had affected his life forever. Beethoven's father always wanted to make profit from his son's success. On regular basis, Beethoven was locked in the cellar, spanked, and deprived of

The Writing Brilliance of Edgar Allan Poe

D. H. Lawrence wrote an essay that extensively describes Edgar Allan Poe's writing style. Lawrence looks at Poe's work as a scientific and mechanical way of writing. The tales Poe writes are not really tales at all. The only reason they are even considered as tales is because they are a concatenation of cause and effect. Lawrence saw Edgar's stories as more than just a tales. They are love stories. Poe does not write looking at the human part of someone's life. The characters are looked at as inanimate objects with human qualities, rather than the characters being human with inorganic qualities. Lawrence elaborates on Poe's style by mentioning that he finds it to be mechanical. Poe never sees anything in terms of life. He only views life in terms of matter or force, thus the Lawrence's reference to scientific writing. This facile viewpoint on life brings out his sensitiveness to sounds and effect. Lawrence also believes that Edgar Allen Poe was a very deep man. He wrote with his soul. Poe gives you a look at what is underneath consciousness. His writing is all fair-spok

Intelligence of the Octopus

Octopuses, otherwise known as part of the class, Cephalopods, are highly intelligent creatures of the sea. Some 300 species of which that inhabit water around the world can change various colors and textures and camouflage, squirt out a poisonous substance, and have a force greater than their own total body weight. Their brains are about the same size of their body weight. Different people have different opinions and views on what intelligence is and how someone or something can take in information. One example of how an octopus is smart is that they play around. Like normal intelligent animals would do, they do this also. You can put them in a boring situation with boring items and they would "play" with the objects surrounding them. They gave them and empty tank and a pill bottle and waited to see what the result would be. Th

And the Best Actress Is...

Kurt Vonnegut once said, "Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you'll look back and realize they were the big things". This has been my favorite quote since I was a child, yet I have never realized how it has applied to my life. Not until my name was announced for the best actress academy award, did I finally understand the meaning of this quote. In order to get to the point in life I had gotten to, I had a colossal amount of work. This work started since I was little, but it took me a long time to realize that it had begun. My career has started from three little things I did as a child. It started from getting picked for public speeches at school, little self-written plays for my cousins, and my big role in one drama my church did. My life as an actress had started without me even knowing. To start off, I could lie and say that immediately I was the star of every single production put on at my church, but in all honesty, my career started off more embarrassing th

Common Household Minerals

Minerals We all know that minerals are very important in our everyday lives. They are preset in lots of objects in our houses. But what are they? Minerals are solid substance that is naturally occurring and there are over 4,900 known mineral species, but the ones we all have around the house are mostly industrial minerals. Industrial minerals are sometimes used in their natural states, or they first get beneficiated. The ones that you use everyday in your house are for example limestone; used in sugar, halite; used in table salt and dish soap, sodium carbonate; used in toothpaste and dish soap, calcite, kaolinite, hematite are also some of the minerals that we use every day through cosmetics, etc. Limestone Limestone is a sedimentary rock and it makes 10% of the total volume of all sedimentary rocks. Except for its usage in industry, it is also used in some foods such as flower. Limestone is added to flour to enrich the calcium level

The Destiny of Future Generations

Have you ever thought about how your children's and grandchildren's life will be in the future? Is it peaceful, rightful, healthy, sophisticated, and joyful? In our daily life we do a lot of activities as a part of our living; we work to earn money, go to schools to improve our education, consume natural resources for nutrition, manufacture stuffs from different materials to use, use chemicals to keep things around us clean, and meet new people and debate with them to socialize. We do all of these things for ourselves and to continue living without thinking of the consequences on other's future lives. Since humans have intelligence and influence, the present generation can act wisely to build the better future for their descendants, and to ensure that they will not face serious issues, such as crimes, wars, violence, poverty, drugs abuse, polluted environment, lack of natural resources, new diseases, obesity, job crisis, and education disparity. Humanity can create the best possible w

The Story of Rosie the Riveter

On December 7, 1941, 12 million women were already in the work force, comprising one-fourth of all workers. Most of these women were single, divorced, or widowed and were supporting themselves and their children. It was not yet common for married women to work outside the home (Gluck 22). The greatest effect war has on people involved is change. World War II brought many different thoughts and ideas within the United States alone. One of the most remarkable changes that occurred during wartime was change in identity for women. As far back as history can tell, women have been limited in mobility and set in particular spaces by society. They were always given a certain "role" and were expected to fulfill those expectations. World War II gave women the chance to prove they were just as capable as men. Rosie the Riveter was a propaganda/ publicity campaign created by the U.S. government. This campaign was created because when men left for war, there were many jobs that needed to

Livestock and Environmental Impact

Today it is common to speak of pollution, environmental impact and climate change. Many people, in order to help the environment, recycle try to use organic products, prefer brands that support ecology and even try to consume products that promise to give a percentage of their earnings towards the reforestation of some forest or water treatment. Furthermore, it is known that activities like mining and oil extraction are highly polluting. However, something very few know is that livestock, an activity that is strongly tied to every one's lifestyle and daily consumption, is one of the most polluting activity and has one of the greatest worldwide environmental impact. Meat consumption becomes an activity that threatens the quality of life on the planet and whose reduction is very necessary. Opinions will be presented based on three arguments. Firstly, farming is highly polluting and harmful to the environment. Secondly, livestock is responsible for land degradation, deforestation in vario

Research Paper - Cryptography

INTRODUCTION Computer and network security is a new and fast moving technology and as such, is still being defined. When considering the desired learning outcomes of such a course, one could argue that a network security analyst must be capable of analyzing security from the business perspective in order to adhere to recent security legislation, and from the technical perspective in order to understand and select the most appropriate security solution. Network security [3] originally focused on algorithmic aspects such as encryption and hashing techniques. While these concepts rarely change, these skills alone are insufficient to protect computer networks. As crackers hacked away at networks and systems, courses arose that emphasized the latest attacks. Currently, many educators believe that to train people to secure networks, they must also learn to think like a cracker [1-2]. The following background information in security helps in making correct decisions: Attack Recognition, Encry

Laundry Security – College Survival by Susan Fitzgerald

As many students are aware, Bowling Green State University is not responsible for anyone's lost or stolen items. This includes students' laundry. According to Susan Fitzgerald's' article "Laundry Security – College Survival", "students report theft from college laundry rooms every year." There are numerous cases of reported laundry theft on each and every college campus. Although this crime may not seem as severe as others, according to Ian Sacks, laundry has "the same potential for theft and the same monetary losses as any more coveted item" such as a laptop or other electronic device. I feel that in order to stop laundry theft on college campuses, students should be required to bring a lock to put on in-use washers and dryers. By doing so, students protect themselves from not only laundry theft, but also the stress that comes along with it. In order to make washers and dryers safer for students laundry, each BGSU student should be required to purc

Strategies of the Brazilian Beer Market

Contending forces are of great importance in strategy formulation, as they determine the profitability of the industry. In this case, it is the globalization which took the prominence in shaping the industry. Both Brahma and Antarctica were rivals from hundreds of years, both wanted to become industry leaders in Brazil and wanted to gain competitive advantage over each other. In 1990's after the opening of Brazilian market country went through a process of liberalization, import barriers were lifted, world's largest privatization process started. U.S & European companies have descended upon the country acquiring local companies. Earlier beer companies were focusing on their domestic markets but now they want to expand their international process and become multinational corporations. So this is when Brahma & Antarctica merged together to dwarf off their competitors. It took them around ten months and the whole process was under the scrutiny of CADE (the Brazilian anti-trust authority);

Non-Renewable Nuclear Power

When discussing alternatives for the type of energy we should use, nuclear power is a replacement that is brought up very often. Many Americans have questioned as to whether nuclear energy is safe enough to use as a source of electricity. Nuclear power can be a factor in many social, economic and environmental issues. People who support the usage of nuclear energy would argue that there are minimal consequences for nuclear power. Although that is true for the present, the future consequences that the next generations would have to deal with are great in number. While there are indeed advantages to using nuclear energy, it is clear that the disadvantages are far more serious. Nuclear energy is created when a process called fission takes place. This process begins when an atom is bombarded with a subatomic particle and split in two. When this happens, heat energy is created and the heated tubes are then put into water in order to create steam. The steam is then taken to an electric generator. Uranium is the atom most typically used for this process. Another process used to create nuclear energy is fusion. This occurs when two atoms

Film Analysis - The Matrix

The Matrix is a computer simulated world where humans fight against agents. The world is powered by humans who are used like batteries. The film The Matrix begins showing us the Warner Brothers logo, however the logo is not its usual color but it is a slight green tinge. This could show us that the film is not an ordinary one and will be a bit strange, a bit different. The opening of the Warner Brothers logo at the beginning of the film is also accompanied by music which is also a bit strange and not the usual one. This tells me that the film is going to be a little bit eerie; the music is carried on throughout the film. The way that the creators of the matrix use computers to link the whole film together is continuous throughout the whole film. Computers and phones play an important part in the film, to me the matrix is like a virtual world. A virtual world that relates to us as the internet for us is a virtual world. During the film Tank uses computer programming to upload and down

Count Dracula: A Real Ladies Man

Written and set in the late 19th century, Bram Stoker's epistolary novel, Dracula, is a pivotal book in the horror/gothic literature. There are strong themes of morality and questioning what exactly is good or evil, there are ties to Christian iconography but what I found to be the most important were the strong themes of female sexuality and oppression. Victorian culture basically revolved around suppressing women and this is quite obvious in many scenes parts of the book. In a typical Victorian society, women were unfairly forced into very restrictive gender roles. A woman would either be looked at as pure and innocent, (or a mother/wife) or she could be regarded as a nothing more than a whore (Buckk). There really was no middle ground for women at that time. This view on women is represented through two of Dracula's main characters, Mina and Lucy. These two women are inexplicably feminine and the prime example of how a woman in the Victorian era should be. The threat that Count Drac

The French and Indian War

The French and Indian War took place between 1754 and 1763. Throughout this period of time the American colonists, baptized by fire, emerged with increased confidence in their military strength. They had held their own against the French forces, they had fought bravely beside British regulars, and they had gained priceless military experience, both officers and common folk alike. At the conclusion of the war the colonies had nearly twenty thousand men that had been taught the ways of war. The events that took place during the opening clashes of the French and Indian war were very influential towards the colonists, and laid the foundation for their later rebellion. General Braddock, a sixty year old officer experienced in European warfare, was sent to Virginia with a strong detachment of British regulars. After amassing supplies he set out in 1755 with some two thousand men to capture Fort Duquesne. A consider

Finding Happiness

What does it mean to be happy? It seems that this is another one of those questions that no one knows the answer to, yet I am determined to find it. So what is happiness? What is it that makes us feel that certain feeling that none of us can really put our finger on. Of course there's the simple, boring response that any scientist can tell you. Happiness is an experience that we know happens when there are certain levels of different chemicals in our brains. These chemicals trigger a response somewhere in our nervous system, and we feel what we call "happy." However, that still doesn't answer us. Even if there's no doubt that that's what happens, that still doesn't tell us why those chemicals are released or those signals are sent. There's no cause. That only tells us what happens, but that's still not enough. To find why we are happy and what that really means, we have to take a look at what makes us feel this emotion. To me, it would appear that it could be anything. It could be a certain activity you enjoy, or a memory of some event in your life, or maybe even a

First Impressions

Hi journal! Today I would like to share about a new friend. His name is Ariff. He is from Besut, Kelantan. Ariff is new in town so, he does not know much about Shah Alam. However, that is fine because he has two years from now to explore Shah Alam since he is going to live here. In our class, he is sitting next to Ismail, the class representative for Eden, our amiable friend, Ismail, spends his time to give Ariff a tour in our school compound so that Ariff would be familiar with the school's environment. According to Ismail, Ariff is a very benign guy because Ariff is close to Ismail but for me, he is different . When I first saw him, the first thing I noticed about him was that he has a very big frame. To me he looks like a mafia because usually big guys are mischievous and loves to bully small people like me. This is because when I was young, I always got bulli

Impression Formations

Introduction Students from the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) Programme conducted an investigation focusing on the development of impression formed towards people. An impression is a feeling or thought formed on others. It may be from the influence of characteristics, features or traits of peoples that was triggered from a past. This investigation is performed based on which stimuli, audio or visual, would shape a deeper and more impactful first impression. I hypothesise that visual stimulus might form a stronger first impression compared to audio stimulus. This is due to humans dominant interest towards others appearances, it is the most basic thing we notice before we start a conversation. Their facial expression, body posture, gestures and attire are distinct cues we examine for. As to audio stimuli, it is more dubious thus leaving a weaker impression due to the lack of significance in a person's characteristic. Procedure The investigation was conducted in Taylor's Colle

Measurements of a Small Business

Abstract The major focus of this study was defining small businesses and determining standards that can be used when establishing a small business. The study was designed to ascertain how to find financial resources for a business, ways to continue a successful business, turning a business into a franchise, and looking at ways to keep a business from failing. The resources used were current articles and books that addressed the issues of starting a small business. Tables showing the advantages and disadvantages of starting a small business were analyzed for differences in order to determine the best practice in starting a small business. Introduction Small businesses are generally confidentially owned establishments, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. "Small" in terms of government support and tax plan varies by country and by industry. It ranges from less than 15 workers underneath the Australian Fair Work Act 2009, 50 workers according to definition used by Europ

United States Immigration Policy

Because I agree with immigration policies, I negate the resolution, which states resolved: the United States immigration policy is inconsistent with American ideals. The United States was built on the basis of several ideals: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The sanctity of life is a universal value that is agreed upon by all human beings. The United States government should not provide undocumented immigrants living in the United States a path to citizenship because they essentially crossed the border in an unlawful manner and breaking the law should not be rewarded. The government spends about eighteen billion dollars a year to protect the borders of the nation yet individual still attempt to break the law and succeed. If these immigrants are lawless even before entering a country, what strides must the government take in order to prevent further criminal activity? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a crime is defined as an act or the commission of an act that is forbidden or the omission of a duty that is commanded by a public law and that makes the

Fahrenheit 451 - Book and Film

"There must be something in books, something we can't imagine, to make a woman stay in a burning house; there must be something there. You don't stay for nothing." Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury, is a well-known science fiction novel that successfully influences readers; make us to rethink about the importance of books and how grateful we have the freedom to read nowadays. The book includes lots of details and description about the story; Francois Truffaut's film in 1966 is a more visual way to look at this story. The film expresses the themes well, shows the ideas of negative dystopian society and censorship. However, the film is a quintessence version of the book, therefore there is many differences between them. There are three major differences, the characters, the setting, and the plot. First of all, the character is the key that expresses the ideas of both the movie and the book. When I was reading the book, the protagonist Montag appears to be a gentle, attractive

Autobiography - A Narrow Course

"... He left no children. All that remains are four useless girls and a disabled with half a foot into his grave..." Even at the tender age of eight, these words pierced my heart; especially because they were from my deceased father's brother, a man I loved and considered to be a second father all my life. When my father died, the painful reality of his absence did not immediately hit me because I was still too young to understand the complexities of death. However, at that point in time, those callous words, uttered shamelessly before my father was even buried, elicited a fountain of tear. Looking back, I realized that it was in that moment that I decided to prove him and the rest of the world wrong. Those words were deeply engraved in my heart and implanted a cold-steeled determination in my inner core. My sisters and I were transferred to a cheaper school and had to walk six miles to school every day. None of us complained and we managed to endure the physic
