Privatization of Social Security Adminstration

Privatization of the current Social Security system is currently a hot button topic and will be for years to come. The privatization of social security has been a political platform utilized by many politicians. In fact, former President George W. Bush was utilize the privatization of Social Security as a platform and during his administration 47 percent of Republicans supported some plan to privatize the agency. The privatization of the United States Social Security System will provide the opportunity for each American who pays into the system to have and exercise some control over their earned benefits. The system that we refer to as the Social Security system was once known as the Old Age and Survivors Insurance (OASI). The OASI began in 1935, at this time it only took the contributions of 17 workers to pay one retiree. Studies now indicate by the middle of the 21st century, that ratio will be two to one workers per beneficiary. [SOC15] Currently, the payments received from the Social Security system provides monetary payments to the millions of American, beneficiaries who are either retired, disabled or th

Life of Pi - The Path to Survival

"Survival is a state of mind." After the Tsimtsum sank, Pi was trapped in a lifeboat with a tiger, a hyena, a zebra, and an orangutan. With no sign of any other survivors, lasting the night seemed unlikely. Survival is defined as the state or fact of continuing to live, typically in spite of difficult circumstances. Nothing was more important to Pi than surviving: physically, emotionally, and biologically. "You can get used to anything. Isn't that what all the survivors say?" The main reason Pi was able to survive is because he was able to adapt. He had been a vegetarian his entire life, but he was able to kill and eat living things in order to stay alive himself. Pi used every bit of information and tool that was available to him. He used his knowledge about animals that he gained from living in a zoo to deal with his boatmates and the knowledge he gained from the survival manual to learn how to feed himself with his surroundings. Pi remembered t

Animal Farm - Critical Lens Essay

Yann Martel wrote, "You must take life the way it is and make the best of it" in his book "Life of Pi" in 2001. This statement simply means that when something happens in life, whether it is good or bad, just soak it up and make it work for you. This statement is true. The novel, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell supports this statement. The novel shows how the animals make their life as good as they can even when it gets bad. In Animal Farm, the animals know they are being treated poorly by their owner, Mr. Jones, so they revolt and their lives get worse. They pictured that after they revolted they would have a utopia but instead when Napoleon the pig becomes ruler the animals are treated even worse. Now the animals cannot revolt against Napoleon so they just make the best they can of it. Orwell symbolizes Animal Farm as Russia during and after the Russian Revo

Summary of Renaissance Music

In the Medieval period western music was dictated by the church and was restricted by religious text. In this paper, I will show how composers move away from complicated, biblical numerical symbolism and academic elitism into simplicity and immediacy for the enjoyment of the masses. Through the rebirth of the Classical Greek and Roman ideas, composers find newness and creativity through musical variations within the motet, the cyclic mass, and the chanson. Although it is difficult to clearly define the beginning of the Renaissance, there are particular aspects of this new music that were so monumental that it is impossible to deny the rebirth of music around the 1400s. Guillaume de Machaut's mass, "La Messe de Nostre Dame " (Mass of Our Lady), is a polyphonic mass written in the setting of the ordinary mass. Machaut uses numerical symbols relating to the bible, which could only be understood if one were to study the mass in its entirety. This mass is a classic case of non-immediate M

The Aids Epidemic and Advertising

The AIDS epidemic became well known and renowned in the 1980s when society realized they must find a way to help cure this immense disease that many people were dying from. Following the 1970s and 1970s the age of rock n' roll, sex and drugs, the number became outrageous. However now people are taking big steps in helping find a cure and minimizing the percentage of people dying from this disease. With all the money invested in ad campaigns to advise people what to do and how to do it, the percentage of people dying have vigorously decreased. By displaying a superhero, wonder woman, in an ill state, this advertisement appeals to pathos in persuading the target audience to do something about the disease and help prevent it. The ad targets the general public to promote AIDS awareness. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus is passed from one person to another through blood-to-blood and/or sexual contact. Coming into direct contact with blood, semen or vaginal fluids commonly spre

Needs that I observed from the students ranged drastically from student to student for example some students needed help gathering their ideas, having a quiet work place, being free from distraction, help staying on task and getting motivated to work. With learning the needs of the students I was able to probably adapt my assistance to support these students. For example students that struggled to come up with ideas for a project, instead of just giving them more time to think I would ask them several things what are your hobbies, has there been a sketch you've done that you really liked, do you want it to be abstracted or realistic. With their answer I was better able to adept my assi

Tragedy at the Workplace

A job in the oil and gas industry is accompanied by a myriad of hazards. This is an account of the ways in which a tragedy at work emphasizes the importance of following safety procedure, and the ripple effect it has on employees. When working in the field of construction, safety is frequently the topic of discussion. When I arrive on site every morning, the first thing that must be done is a Job Hazard Analysis. This is absolutely essential due to the fact I work in tandem with excavators, bulldozers, and haul trucks. Unfortunately, few construction sites remain incident free; that was the case on this day. The sun was beginning its descent at approximately 5pm and visibility was limited. My job was spotting for the operator of a bulldozer. Five spotters, myself included, were to help the operators when reversing and notify them of potential obstacles. After spotting fo

World on the Edge - Glaciers and Ice Sheets

Lester Brown, author of World on the Edge and creator of "Plan B"" featured on PBS's series Journey to Planet Earth, details alarming statistics of humans' patterns of destruction, plus his solutions of how to put the brakes on what he fears will be the possible end of civilization. Brown delves into many causes of global warming, and the impacts each are having on the Earth are alarming. Excessive carbon emissions, the melting of glaciers and sea ice, and increasing global temperatures are an intertwining, vicious cycle that needs to come to a screeching halt in order to attempt reverse the impending doom we may face. The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, and natural gas, "is the largest source of emissions of carbon dioxide, which is one of the greenhouse gasses that allows radiative forcing and contributes to global warming, according to Science Daily. (Fossil Fuel) These fuels are the main source of the world's energy. Fossil fuels act as an insulator in the Earth's atmo

Domestic Violence - Breaking the Cycle

No one ever imagines that they would allow themselves to be in a domestic violence relationship; however it's more common than one would think. No one can begin to understand how it happens until it does. I know this because it happened to me. My first love as a teenager was also my worst. I met him when I was fifteen; he was the funny and fun, the cousin of my best friend. As our friendship blossomed we confided all of our teen secrets to each other. We spent hours upon hours on the phone, writing letters, and finding every way possible to see each other and hang out. Being my best friend's cousin made it that much easier, and definitely helped my immediate comfort level and connection with him. I had heard stories of his horrible childhood, thus why he was living with his grandmother. I also knew his mother had been killed when he was six years old as a result of domestic violence. Instead of putting up red flags, this made me feel sympathetic and even more intrigued by him. As our

Social Construction Theories

This paper is a reaction to the assigned readings for the week of September 22 and covers the topic of Social Construction. I have chosen to review the article by Helen Ingram, Anne Schneider and Peter deLeon, Social Construction and Policy Design, and the article by Anne Schneider and Helen Ingram titled Social Construction of Target Populations: Implications for Politics and policy. OVERVIEW The social construction framework attempts to explain Lasswell's infamous question of "Who gets what, when and how? ". In simplified terms, the theory argues that target populations are constructed by policymakers and couched in both negative and positive terms. Policymakers then proceed to allocate benefits and burdens among these target groups in a way that reflects and propagates these social constructions. The social construction theory is important to the field of public policy because it helps to explain why certain groups receive more benefits from government, while other tend to carry a

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell disease is a disorder passed down through families, where it causes red blood cells to become abnormally shaped. Red blood cells are the cells that transports or carries oxygen throughout the human body. Sickle Cell disease affects over 400,000 children and adults per year. This genetic disorder is a very deadly one and causes symptoms that eventually lead to a very serious injury or even death. The disease gets its name from the abnormal shape of the affected red blood cells. The only way you can get sickle cell disorder is if both your parents pass down one defective copy of the disease. The parents can be carriers of the defective sickle cell gene and not have the disease, nor have any symptoms. The only way they would know they were carriers is if they had taken a sickle cell trait blood test. Sickle cell disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern which means two copies of the abnormal gene must be present in order to develop the disorder. People with sickle

Search Engine Ethics

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989, about 20 years after the first connection was established over what is today known as the Internet (WebFoundation.org). Over the years, people around the world have come to find the World Wide Web very useful, making it a widely used resource today, from posting information in the web to accessing and making use of that information. Search engines are a great example. They are software systems designed to search and obtain information from the World Wide Web. The definition of a web search engine made by Halavais (2009, 5–6), is "an information retrieval system that allows for keyword searches of distributed digital text." Without a doubt, there is bias in search engines. Couvering, in her abstract describes this as "bias that invites users to click on links to large websites, commercial websites, websites based in certain countries, and websites written in certain languages." This paper focuses on the eth

Jealousy Themes in Othello

The main character Shakespeare presents in Othello to display the theme of jealousy is Othello himself and the impact jealousy has on him. Throughout Othello the theme of jealousy in the main character is presented as a poison, planted by Iago it spreads from a small idea to the cause of multiple deaths, destroying lives of even more. The first description of the jealousy soon to be planted on Othello is by Iago in Act 1 scene 3. He talks about Othello being "of a free and open nature," implying that this freedom won't last long, and explaining to the audience that he must "bring this monstrous birth to the world's light." The "monstrous birth" we can see is a reference to jealousy, Iago being the devil that gives birth to this one of the seven sins, envy. This monstrous birth is again refer to by Othello at the beginning of act 3 scene 3 as Othello becomes suspicious of Iago's rumors, questioning whether there is "some monster in thy (Iago's) thought too hideous to be shown." We think

Truth in Photography

Susan Sontag wrote: "The camera's rendering of reality must always hide more than it discloses" in her book, On Photography (1979). Analyzing Sontag's quotes is similar to processing film in the dark room; what is expect to have when the shutter button is pressed is rarely exactly the same as the final result. Susan Sontag offered the readers a large field to explore, to investigate and to question. This essay will take an example of Miles Aldridge's work from a series called "Home Chic" (2011) to analyse and uncover a deeper view about the truth in photography with the purpose of arguing if a photographic image could reflect reality, or not. Miles Aldridge, a big name in the fashion industry, is best known for his fascination with Technicolor dream-like worlds featuring glamorous, beautiful women. The editorial 'Home Chic,' which was published in 2011 by Vogue Italia is not an exception. The model, in addition, was Miles Aldridge's little sister, Ruby Aldri

Positive Effects of Video Games

In the late 1990s a furious debate about how video gamers are prone to violence rippled through the news, almost on a daily basis. This debate had been kicked off by several horrific school shootings, the most known was the Columbine High shooting on April 20, 1999. The online article by Nic Fleming "Why video games may be good for you" opens with gruesome details of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary and how it only took authorities a few hours to link the massacre to violent video games. Fleming then explains how the opposite may be the truth, that the effects of action video games may be good for the brain. Fleming has a very firm view on the impact of the games on the brain. His audience is geared towards people who enjoy playing video games and who would like to learn more about how they are good for you. Fleming uses research from neurologists and psychologists to persuade the reader to accept his ideas. By privileging physiological and psychological evidence Fle

Nuclear Power and Renewable Energy

A huge amount of energy is needed to fulfill people's needs. Due to the lack of fossil fuels and its problems with high quantities of CO2 emissions liberated, UK is obligate to find an alternative energy source to replace it for fossil fuels. As can be seen in the news, nuclear power is back on the government's political agenda, because they are planning to build new nuclear stations in spite of the disagreement of numerous people. All nuclear stations except one are shutting down by 2023, so for that reason, if new nuclear stations are not built, UK will lose a 20% of its electricity (BBC, 2009 a.). There is one question numerous scientists are asking and is the following: Is nuclear power the best alternative to replace fossil fuels for the future energy needs of the UK? Before answering this question, we need to know why fossil fuels need to be replaced, what are the greenhouse gases and its consequences, what are the positive and negative aspects of nuclear power, and if there is a

Documented and Undocumented Immigrants

Immigrants make up a very significant portion of the United States population. It has been characterized as steady growth, and seen as dramatic change. Some immigrants entered the U.S. through the legendary, Ellis Island, and also through its counterpart on the west coast, Angel Island where they were documented and taken account of, whereas other immigrants found different methods of entering the country. By the 20th century and still to this day, great differences of opinion can be heard about just how many immigrants we can allow in our country without "negatively" effecting the job market and "negatively" changing the culture of the United States. The biggest problem people have with immigrants, documented and undocumented, is that they're afraid of losing their opportunities. On top of being smug and feeling like they're better than immigrants, some people, ironically, are really intimidated by their outstanding presence. Warren Mass wrote an article titled, T

Brief Overview of World Religions

Religion can be defined as a system of beliefs and worships which includes a code of ethics and a philosophy of life. Well over 90% of the world's population adheres to some form of religion. The problem is that there are so many different religions. What is the right religion? What is true religion? The two most common ingredients in religions are rules and rituals. Some religions are essentially nothing more than a list of rules, dos and don'ts, which a person must observe in order to be considered a faithful adherent of that religion, and thereby, right with the God of that religion. Two examples of rules-based religions are Islam and Judaism. Islam has its five pillars that must be observed. Judaism has hundreds of commands and traditions that are to be observed. Buddhism and Hinduism are also primarily ritual-based religions, but can also to a lesser degree be considered rules-based. I believe that true religion is neither rules-based nor ritual-based, it is more about having a

Drug Use - Where I Am Now

I just bought cocaine yesterday so my friends, Joey Roberts, and Taylor Kring, want to hang out with me because they know I will share some cocaine with them. It is a fall day of the year 2013. I am just waiting to do something in the town of Liverpool, New York. So my friends invited me to go swing around in a car that one of their friends owned. This guy just wanted some cocaine and my friends and I were planning to buy more drugs, though it was actually my friends' idea, and I just wanted to follow along, so I had somebody to be with. They were planning to buy some opiates, but they needed a car to get to the drug the dealer that had some. For this reason, they wanted a driver. My friends came and picked me up, and Kring made sure that I had the cocaine with me by asking if did. Kring wouldn't want to be with me if I didn't. He would only hang out with people that did drugs and that were doing drugs. So while we all were in the car, we decided that we wanted to get a blunt so that

Women in 20th Century Malayalam Film

Women have been objects of display for centuries, but there seems to be a shift of power when it pertains to who makes the decision to use female sexuality as a means to gain monetary wealth. Women were once told how to act and dress as well as not given the same rights as men, issues that are now not a problem, yet to women are still paraded around and used to sell products or ideals. It is now women who show themselves to get places, using their fierce femininity as a means for power over men. The so called "new generation" heroines are ready to do glamour roles, but the attitude of the directors toward film and women characters changed. This sea change can be witnessed in the 21st century Malayalam movies: "5 Sundarikal" (2013) and "Zachariyayude Garbnikal" (2013). "5 Sundarikal" is an anthology of womanhood. This film deals with five different lives of five different women in five different milieus. Each story in this anthology is a hodgepodge of thought provoking emotions for the

Histroy of the Mauryan Dynastry

The Mauryan Empire in ancient India is considered the first empire establishing an extensive unified culture. The duration of the Mauryan dynasty's rule was from approximately 325 B.C.E to 183 B.C.E. Included within the confines of India at that time was much of modern-day Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. This area was larger than any previously controlled within the Indian subcontinent. Through the unification of individual governing entities, the Mauryan Empire marked the first time that all of India had been brought together under one rule. Ancient India, beginning around 600 B.C.E was divided into sixteen individually ruled kingdoms, the most powerful of which being Magadha. Magadha had conquered neighboring kingdoms, extending its control of northern India from the Bay of Bengal in the East to the Indus River valley in the West. The final ruler of the Nanda dynasty that controlled Magadha, Dhana Nanda, was an abrasive force with power derived from the threat of violence by

Parking at Indiana State University

With every new freshman class entering, parking pose a problem on campus. Us students try to make a change, but sometimes we can be looked down upon. It can be because of our age, experience, or they just don't care. There are many problems here on Indiana State University campus that could be resolved and need to be resolved. Some are in the process of being fixed but one major issue at ISU is the parking. I don't even drive, but j by watching and hearing stories from students and from staff, I can see this is a major issue that needs to be resolved soon as possible. There isn't no excuse to not try to fix the parking because there are many solutions for this problem, including making more parking lots, sell as many parking tickets as there are parking spaces, and having designated parking lots each building. The first solution that comes to mind that can help the parking is to make more parking lots. Parking by the dorms is nearly impossible. Students sometimes have to park across streets or somewhere further from their dorm, which causes them to walk far. Visitors are also taking up our

Prostitution Legalization in China

"China's sex industry has proliferated dramatically in the past 25 years. According to conservative estimates, there are six million prostitutes, and a recent study valued its underground sex industry at 30 billion yuan. (Legalise prostitution in China by Edmund Settle, South China Morning Post news; Pg11). Prostitution has grown intensely in China as the policy of repression has grown more than ever. Thus, many people doubt that the present policy is a good way. In Chinese National People's Congress 2012, it was the ninth time the member, Chi Susheng, a lawyer from the northeast China, proposed that prostitution should be legalized. Should we continue the current policy or change another direction to try legalize it? There's no doubt that the purpose behind current law is to decrease prostitution. However, as we all know, where there is a demand, there will be a supply. The existence of prostitution does have its reason and value. The consumers of prostitution are mostly males.

Ronald Reagan - Evangelical Address

The idea of Christianity has always been questioned in both liberal and conservative views of Americans. Christianity in our government is an important issue for which strong conservatives have always fought. Ronald Reagan was a conservative president whose thoughts on Christianity reflected the typical conservative view. In his Address to the National Association of Evangelicals, Reagan expresses his idea that Christianity is still a strong religion, and that the Evangelicals should not be swayed in any decisions straying from a Christian one. Throughout the history of America, Christianity has been the selected religion of most citizens. In recent years however, many people have lost their sight of what was once a mandatory religion. While this is true, the United States still has the highest amount of free Evangelicals than any other country. Reagan said in his address that many Americans "believed the Ten Commandments had real meaning in their lives." With this said, it

Family Business Succession Guide

In any kind of endeavor there is a moment where the control should be passed down to the next generation. It can happen in many ways - as passing the control to an offspring, or to an outside controller, or one can consider selling the business. This paper will provide the process for a successful succession to the business owners. To define the meaning of family business, will be used the following definition: "a family business is a business governed and/or managed with the intention to shape and pursue the vision of the business held by a dominant coalition controlled by members of the same family or a small number of families in a manner that is potentially sustainable across generations of the family or families" (Massis, Chua, and Chrisman). The transition of power from one generation to another is not an easy process. It is a complicated process because family businesses have several other issues that work against the successful continuation of the business. The main issu
