The Scarlet Letter - Historical Accuracy

In 1666, there was a puritan colony in Massachusetts where The Scarlet Letter took place; this was a time of new English settlement. The story line for the movie does portray history accurately in the way the puritans are portrayed by religion, witchcraft, indentured servants and punishment. However, it does not accurately portray the names of the historical people that were involved or that Hester Prynne was not hung also when the Native Americans take her husband captive. The Scarlet Letter portrays the religious aspect of a woman who was caught being unfaithful to her supposedly dead husband and committing adultery. The loyalty of Hester to the father of her bastard child causes her to be chastised from the puritan community. Native Americans in this film are portrayed accurately in the beginning when the movie shows Metacom, the leader of the tribe, at his father's funeral. Davidson J. et al., (2010) stated "Masasoit died and was succeeded by his son Metacom" (p. 94). Wh

Temperance Movement - T.S. Arthur and Edgar Allen Poe

During the mid nineteenth century, it was less common than it is today to jail a man for abusing his wife and children. But during this time, reformers feared that domestic violence from drunkenness was becoming a threat to the prosperity of the country. Therefore, the Temperance Movement was founded to press the cause of the cultural trends favoring habitual drinking. Then came the Washingtonians, they shifted drinking away from society by taking a pledge of total abstinence from alcohol to become "sober, industrious men, with their families again around them, and again happy " (Arthur 42). Authors T.S. Arthur and Edgar Allen Poe help shift drinking away from society by writing narratives uncovering the violent character of an alcoholic. Indeed, by linking Poe to Arthur, we can begin to reread Poe as someone responding to Arthur and the Temperance Movement. Arthur's narratives about inebriation reformation are stories he listened too first hand during Washingtonian confession meeti

The Lotus Eaters - Addicted to Exposure

History is full of war. People battle against one another for a number of reasons. Lives of many soldiers are taken. They risk their own lives knowing that they may not live to see another day. There are a list of causes to war, such as competing for resources, poverty, wealth, territory, assassination, religion, political beliefs, opposing interests and many more. Why do people attend war? Soldiers sometimes are obligated to go days without food and shelter and witness many deaths. Imagine them losing a buddy right in front of their eyes. Their body shaking, heart pounding and covered in sweat. Not only are they depressed that one of their mates was killed, but there is a sense of relief because it could have been them. Although it is not a pleasant experience, people join the war to protect innocent lives, and to become a hero. Some think of it as a job; they think of it as a way to solve disputes between nations. The prolonged and costly armed conflict that began in 1959 is known a

Illegal Immigration - Not Black and White

Thousands of immigrants cross the border into America illegally every year. These immigrants are our neighbors, they use our public services and work at our businesses, so they should be deported to their country of origin, right? Many Americans believe this to be the best solution, however, after examining this issue closely, it's obvious that illegal immigrants should be granted amnesty, meaning they are given citizenship. This topic has been debated for decades, if not centuries. Rarely is it a question of what to do about people coming into the country, most agree the U.S. should have tighter borders, but a question of what to do with the people that are already in America. The reason this is an issue is because illegal immigrants are seen as a burden on the American economy, they don't pay taxes, they take our jobs, they use our public services, and they consume our goods. The popular answer to this problem is to deport illegal immigrants to their country of origin, if they want to come back,

The Story of an Hour - Heart Symbols

In Kate Chopin's short story, "The Story of an Hour," a young woman named Louise Mallard is in the last hour of her life. She suffers from a condition of her heart when she learns of her husband's death. "Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with a heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband's death"" (532). Louis has been trapped in a stifling, loveless marriage in which her husband has controlled her for years. The author uses symbols in her story to help the reader understand what Mrs. Mallard was going through in the last hour of her life. Louise's heart is used a symbol to let us see the irony in the story. The condition of her heart was not a physical issue but an emotional one. Mrs. Mallard's heart is in despair due to her sadness of a husband who doesn't love her. "She knew that she would weep again when she saw the kind, tender hands folde

The Kitchen - Where Life Happens

While food is necessary for survival, it cannot merely represent this small aspect of life. Food is a vehicle through which society can learn more about the world. The act of eating does not require a certain language, age, or time zone. It is an all-compassing cultural experience. It represents tradition, family, love, and war. Eating is necessary, and because of this, the act of eating forces society to be present, and therefore, to recognize the life placed in front of them. In Joy Harjo's, "Perhaps the World Ends Here,"" the kitchen table, as a representation of acknowledging the present moment, proves that the act of eating changes meaning according to circumstance. The kitchen table constantly takes on different roles. As Harjo states elegantly, "the world begins at the kitchen table, " in other words, humans, whether they like it or not, must eat in order to survive. However, the act of eating reaches far beyond the boundaries of a necessity for survival. The kitchen table is a place where one is able to appreciate the "gifts o

Future Relations of World Super Powers

The purpose of this research paper is to analyze the situation between the United States of America and the Peoples Republic of China and if they are in the midst of a conflict due to the growing role of China in the international realm. This paper will begin with a brief history of the past decade, presenting how these two powerful nations arrived at this issue. Further, I will introduce the major theoretical approaches in international relations to examine the affairs between the two countries, which include, liberalism, social constructivism, and realism, all of which provide contrasting and somewhat overlapping views; as a result of, the different aspects of detail each theory focuses on. However, due to the complexity of each theory encompassing different internal points of views and debates within each other, I will provide a broad introduction of each theory based on the standard beliefs and assumptions and work from there. Liberalism and social constructivism will be establishe

Genetically Modified Foods - Leading the Way

Food is one of the most fundamental aspects of life - you cannot live without it. Some are fighting everyday to feed themselves or a family one decent meal a day, when others are granted the opportunity to eat whatever and whenever they desire. Many 3rd world countries are fighting to keep food production from diminishing, and many are hoping to find a solution to achieving food security. Genetically modified foods may be the solution to solving worldwide food scarcity that hinders all over the world. Genetically modified foods are foods composed of organisms in which the genetic material has a modified DNA to achieve a desired trait. To enhance a desired trait in an organism genetic engineering is a set of technologies used to alter the genetic makeup of cells, using the transferring of genes. Genetic engineering can be used to produce traits that can enhance the nutritional value of plant crops. We no longer have to rely on agriculture for survival and the production of most foods, w

Absolutism - Three Views of Truth

Some people in the world see truth as black and white, no in-between, while others walk in the gray areas of partial truths or what they consider to be true for themselves. This leads to the different views of truth; we have divided them off into three groups, Absolutism, Societal relativism, and Individual relativism. The differences between the three conflicting views of truth will be explained and backed. Although there are different opinions on how truth is relayed, the truth is the same for every person; Absolutism is what we should live by, if the truth is not absolute how can you be absolutely sure, evidence will be presented for the differences between, Absolutism, Societal relativism, and Individual relativism. Absolutism: "any theory holding that values, principles, etc., are absolute and not relative, dependent, or changeable" (Dictionary.com). Absolutism is compared to relativism, one being absolute and completely true and the other being true depending on the pe

The Text Message Relationship

Within the last decade, our generation has become very dependent on the form of communication known as text messaging. Text messaging, or texting, is a quick and easy way to send and receive information via cellular devices. With a few swipes and taps on the touch screen of a mobile device, one can easily send a message to someone across the room or across the world. According to the results of a nationally representative sample reported in Pew Internet (2011), approximately 83% of American adults own cell phones and three-quarters of them (73%) send and receive text messages (qtd. ln Lou). Young adults are by far the most avid texters, sending an average of 109.5 messages on a normal day (qtd. In Luo). Texting has become integrated into many aspects of young adults' lives, especially impacting their romantic relationships. Young couples should embrace texting as a daily part of their lives because it improves relationship satisfaction by amplifying intimacy through increased availabil

Poetry Analysis - The Cadaver by Alice Jones

Considering the poem "The Cadaver,"" readers gain a perspective and lens into a medical professional's life as literary techniques enhance the audience's perception of the distressing events they are exposed to every day. Utilizing methods of imagery and metaphor, the physical words come to life, draw comparisons and elicit a response from the reader, ultimately establishing Alice Jones's poem as a strong work of literature. The imagery implemented throughout this work is overwhelming as descriptions come to being, allowing the reader to visualize the events occurring before their eyes. The body is depicted as cool, rubbery, and detached from humanity. Throughout the poem, readers take on the perspective of a medical student as "things with weight and texture could be felt by your palpating fingers, their details encompassed by the eye"" (76) and can comprehend this sense of touch themselves. Ironically, the body is depicted as lifeless yet diseases are personified: "cancer ate it"" (7

Smoking Cessation and Operant Conditioning

Ever since I started to smoke when I was a high school senior, I have been longing to quit. The reason for this cannot be simpler: "Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable disease and death worldwide and smoking-related diseases claim over 393,000 American lives each year." For the past year, several attempts to quit smoking all failed. This time, I tried to alter my behavior by applying operant conditioning, which is easy for executing and appropriate for changing behavior in a short period of time. In contrast to classical conditioning which focuses on involuntary, automatic behaviors, operant conditioning focuses more on strengthening or weakening voluntary behaviors like smoking. During this nine-day trail through operant conditioning, my goal was to abandon smoking, something that was and would always be harming my health. I divided the nine days

Glory and Django Unchained

Within the films Glory and Django Unchained, there are several depictions of how whites viewed blacks during the time of the Civil War. Throughout the first half of the film Glory, there is a significant amount of racial resentment geared towards the black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts regiment. Despite the fact that these black soldiers were fighting for the same cause as white soldiers within the Union Army, white soldiers viewed these black soldiers as inferior individuals who lacked the capability of performing basic military duties. In Django Unchained, Django's intellectual capacity is consistently questioned throughout the film's entirety. Despite the fact that Django speaks and reads well, white people within the film label Django as an ignorant slave who is unable to develop intellectual thoughts when speaking to southern whites. It is evident in both films that whites were reluctant to give blacks an opportunity to show that they were just as capable as whites with rega

The Amistad Captives

During the 1820s and 1830s, individuals and groups came forward with the revolutionary idea of equality for black men and women. This created a divide in the nation. In 1829, David Walker gave his opinion about slavery. He proposed a rebellion for the South and stated that God was in favor of the slave's rebellion. Walker advocated violent action, the rebellion of slaves, and the killing of masters (MHL Walker p. 232). At the beginning of the 1830s newspapers such as The Liberator and societies like the American Anti-Slavery emerged, all with the purpose of immediate emancipation of all slaves (Jones et al. Ch. 12, p. 301). Many abolitionist activities started to occur and this worried the southern slave owners and anti-abolitionists. In Washington D.C, the House of Representatives imposed a gag rule on antislavery petitions, forbidding them to be read aloud or entered in public record (Jones et al. Ch. 12, p. 302). Many anti-abolitionists spoke out about slavery. One of these people w

Life and Contributions of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, as founding president of the Republic of Kenya is arguably one of Kenya's greatest and most beloved leaders. Even though his physical presence is long gone, his vision for a unified and free Kenyan lives on, and remains a major source of inspiration not only to Kenyans, but for all people of African descent. The name Kenyatta stems from the Swahili phrase taa ya Kenya, which stands for the "light of Kenya", truly befitting of his stature. Just as light shines in the dark, Kenyatta's vision shone so bright that it awakened Kenyans to the injustices of the British colonial government and prompted them to fight for their rights. It was Kenyatta who powerfully reminded Kenyans that they didn't have to be colonial subjects and that they could determine their own destiny. Kenyatta was clearly a man of many talents. Not only was he a very charming individual, but was very articulate too. This fact made him a formidable politician, because he a

Imperialism and the Manifest Destiny

During the 19th century starting from the year 1840, a new concept was brought amongst the American people known as the Manifest Destiny, which was the belief that American settlers were destined to expand throughout the continent. Although many Americans believe that the Manifest Destiny was an aggressive imperialism and harmful to many people, however this movement should be viewed more as a progressive movement for the nation. The Manifest Destiny bettered the nation by first expanding its territory further to create a stronger nation. Secondly, this movement helped create/shape the American identity. Lastly, this movement helped cultivate the nationalism and beliefs of society to others bringing popularity and power to the United States. The Manifest Destiny could be viewed in various perspectives such as one of a progressive movement. According to Congress resolution to annex Texas in 1845 (Document C) it states "may be erected into a new state, to be called the State of

The Death Penalty and Legal Rights

The first established death penalty laws date back as far the Eighteenth Century B.C. under the reign of King Hammurabi of Babylon (DPIC). The United States has been using this form of punishment for centuries. For as long as it has been around, the death penalty has been opposed by many groups. Execution as punishment constantly brings into question whether or not this form of reprimand violates an individual's human rights. The death penalty is not an effective form of punishment, and its use comes with numerous negative effects. The entire purpose of the death penalty is to deter future crimes of similar nature from occurring. Studies have shown that capital punishment has no effect on the deterrence of future crimes and is no more effective than life imprisonment in discouraging vicious crimes. In addition, it has been estimated by several different state governments that a single death penalty case, from the point of arrest to execution, ranges from $1 million to $3 million, and

A Drug Called Tradition by Sherman Alexie

As the title of Alexie's tale indicates this story is primarily about a Native tradition, in this case a Spokane tradition involving ritual drug use. While the story with its reference to "Washington Water Power" indicates that the Spokane tribe is located in the Northwestern United States, the traditional use of natural hallucinogenic plants for Native rituals extends far beyond a single tribe or region and includes more than one variety of plant. Weston La Barre, a James B. Duke Professor of Anthropology Emeritus in Duke University who researched peyote usage by Native Americans from the 1930's through the 1980's, covers the use of the peyote cactus for religious purposes across much of the United States Southwest and further south into Mexico in his book entitled The Peyote Cult. The exact drug used in Alexie's story is not labeled but is probably from a similar substance. La Barre lists the symptoms of peyote intoxication as follows: First a sense of exhilaration often expressed b

French Revolution and the Napoleonic Era

The French Revolution lasted ten years starting in 1789 and ending in the year 1799. The French revolution was a period of very radical social and political change in French and European history. France was ruled by an absolute monarchy for centuries which ended up collapsing within three years. The older traditional ideas about hierarchy eventually gave in to the new principles of citizenship and rights. According to the text, the first stage of the French Revolution was based totally on the liberty to succeed, own, and compete. Next, the second stage of the revolution took on equality to rally their troops, which was also the revolution of the working people in the French cities. In fact the French adopted a national motto for brotherhood which was Liberte', egalite, fraternite which is French for Liberty, equality, and fraternity. The debates on the compatibility of the three terms as well

Glengarry Glen Ross - Interaction in the Office

Glengarry Glen Ross is a film about a dysfunctional office space and how the communication issues within an office can ultimately lead to severe measures such as crime. However, the three class concepts that I found most prominent in the film was communication as practice, the group dynamics inside and outside of the office (professional versus civic), and communication as techne. How the different characters communicate, verbally in particular, is very interesting and shows the true dynamic of the workspace. The characters all have very different backgrounds and it all surfaces when you look at how they interact with one another. For example, when Shelley is arguing with Williamson about the new leads at the start of the movie, he goes through a few different communicative practices to try to get his way. For example when Shelley begins to try and reason with Williamson he plays the "friend" card. He invites Williamson out to eat and just talk as friends, not co-workers, however he quickly changes his tone.

Reflections on 1984 by George Orwell

1984 Reflection 3: Pages 200-298 In 1984, Orwell begins with three paradoxes: war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength. Throughout the novel, he clarifies and alters the meanings of these paradoxes as the plot advances. While these paradoxes are used to introduce the concept of doublethink in the beginning, they finish with many meanings which make sense in context to the dystopian society of 1984. Orwell uses the slogan "war is peace" to convey the terrible exploitation of people in his society. As Winton watches the telescreen, it broadcasts a story of a victory in India, after which it stated that "the chocolate ration would be reduced from thirty grams to twenty" (28). Whenever news of victory appear, Winston learns to expect a reduction of some ration. The war is used as a buffer against any unhappiness which could result from the decreased chocolate ration. In this way, the Party prevents any rebellious tendencies from appearing. As Winsto

Critique of Modernism and Capitalism

When we think about capitalism we usually are either for or against it. You believe in it or you do not. However, we seldom think about how capitalism has changed the entire world. It has caused dramatic changes in traditions, cultures, and much more. These changes is something that has been referred to as modernity. The purpose of this critique is to provide an unbiased opinion of capitalism and modernity as two of the most influential phenomena in the last couple of centuries. In order to understand these phenomena one must first look into the origins of capitalism. The origins of capitalism and modernity begin between 16th and 17th century. During this period of time man had created many advances in naval technology and the quest for new routes and resources began. The boats of the time had gotten better and were able to survive brutal weather. In addition there was better methods for navigation. This open the playing field for people like Christopher Columbus who wanted to find ne

My Obstacle - Dyslexia

Walking onto the stage with the lights dim and music ready to start, I feel the energy of the crowd as I begin to dance my heart out. Dancing has been part of my life since I started taking classes at the age of four. I had no idea how important dance would be to my life. When I was a little girl, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, which causes children to have trouble with word recognition, decoding and spelling. Unfortunately, my disability was severe enough that my parents made the decision to have me repeat first grade. This challenge made me feel different than the other students in my class, but it also allowed me to have the courage to work hard and put my whole heart in everything I do, and everything that I have accomplished. Dance gave

The Burden of Illegal Immigrants in America

Illegal Immigration affects all Americans, even if they do not know it. An illegal immigrant is defined as, a foreigner that migrates to a country for a permanent residence, without authorization from the government and no form of identification. Currently, illegal immigrants make up about 4% of the United States' population. There are almost 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. Out of the 12 million illegal aliens, 59% of them are from mexico, 15% from Central and South America, and 10% are from Asia. Illegal immigrants mostly live in southern states such as California, Arizona, and Texas. Illegal immigrants have and will keep coming to the United States. The United States has to do prevent illegal immigrants from staying. Immigrants have been coming to the United States ever since it was founded. Illegal immigration did not exist till 1875, which is when the first restriction on immigration was created. The law was not very restrictive; it only banned convict

China and the One Child Policy

China, the largest country in the world, is in the ongoing process of rapid economical development. With a large population, China has a strong potential to affect many different countries. However, large population can be a disadvantage to Chinese government. With an uncontrollable population, Chinese government introduced the One Child Policy in 1979, which limits couples' childbearing by heavy fine and punishment to reduce birth rates, to control the large population. This policy superficially solved problems such as stabilizing food, and water supplies by improving individual prosperity. However, the policy also brought unforeseen social, political, and economical impacts. The One Child Policy was beneficial to the government. The One Child Policy could decrease the increase of population, which could provide better lives for citizens. With the continuous increase of population, Chinese in poor areas suffered from poverty and unstable water and food supplies. With the policy, Chine
