Legalizing Marijuana - State and Federal Law

In January an Arizona Democrat lawmaker introduced a new bill to make marijuana legal for recreational use for adults. If the bill submitted December 30 is voted through by legislation, voters in Arizona will be able to vote on the recreational use of marijuana by adults. Arizona is one of twenty-three states that allows the use of medical marijuana. If it is passed we will be one of five states that allows marijuana to be used recreationally (Schwartz 2015). There has been many debates about whether or not Arizona should legalize recreational marijuana. The bigger debate is between federal and state law and who has the power to legalize marijuana. The federal government regulates drugs through the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) (21 U.S.C. § 811), which does not recognize the difference between medical and recreational use of marijuana. These laws are generally applied only against persons who possess, cultivate, or distribute large quantities of marijuana. Under federal law, mar

Significance of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress

To understand the historical significance of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress. It is necessary to examine the role of the Catholic Church in early twentieth-century Ireland (Gerard Brockie and Raymond Walsh 2004 and 2008). Before Ireland was granted independence from Britain in 1922, the Catholic Church had become quite Powerful under British rule. As the power of landlord across Ireland was in decline the local priests became more powerful right across the country. This was a time where only one person in every ten went beyond primary school, people often depended on the priest for advice. Ireland was the exception to most countries in Europe where priests were associated with the rich and the powerful e.g. Italy, in Ireland they were much like the ordinary people. The Catholic Church in Ireland had great control over education, which gave it a powerful influence in turning the minds of future generation in its favour. The Eucharistic Congress took place every 3 years in different count

Short Story - The End of the World

When I opened my eyes, I realized I was the only one left. Everything was blurry; it took my eyes a few seconds to adjust to waking up. My purple duvet cover was burrito wrapped around me but there was only enough material to barely cover the ends of my legs. It was all ashes. Everything around me was ash. My armor that was passed down to me by my great grandma, my entire wardrobe, my special edition books, my fabulous collection of vintage Vogue Magazines, everything was gone. A pile of black ash was all that was left of the room I had grown up in. All I wanted to do was cry but instead made my way very quickly down the hall to my parent's room to see if my mom, dad, and baby sister had woken up yet and discovered the horrible thing that had happened to our house. There they were, three piles of black ashes. Two in my parents' bed and one in what used to be my sisters ballet pink crib. They were gone, all, of them. Letting myself cry and scream for precisely four and half minutes before my flight, fight, and freeze instincts kicked in w

Cognitive Psychology - Processing Information

Cognitive psychology is a relatively new branch of psychology that focuses on mental processes such as the way people learn, perceive, think, and remember. It has a prime focus on how individuals acquire process and retain information. In the year 1967, Ulric Neisser, who was an American psychologist, published his book Cognitive Psychology making him the first person to use the term "cognitive psychology." According to this psychologist, cognition refers to all the processes that transform, reduce, elaborate, store, recover, and use the sensory input (McLeod, 2007). From this definition, it is evident that cognition is involved in every human being's thought and actions. According to Ulric Neisser's book "Cognitive Psychology," the human mind has been viewed as performing its functions similar to computers. This approach was introduced in order to counter the behavioral approach that was not satisfactory. The behavioral approach only focused on the visible behavior and did not unders

Cracks in the Foundation of Ancient Rome

By the reign of Augustus, the city of Rome had changed drastically from what it was just after the conclusion of the Third Punic War. Furthermore, it was drastically different from what it had been at the city's inception. When Augustus took control of the new empire, he needed to reassert to the people that Rome was now what it always had been, with only a few changes. This is where Livy came in with his sweeping history of Rome. It can be easily seen that Livy's history of early Rome was influenced by the last two centuries of the Republic, as similar themes appear in the first three books of Ab Urbe Condita and the writings of historians concerning the late Republic. By comparing certain themes and events in Livy's work and those that occurred in the 1st and 2nd centuries BCE, it becomes clear that Livy is writing a history that is chiefly influenced by two things. First, Livy affirms the legitimacy of Augustus in the present day. He does this by extolling values classically define

Eminem - Cultural Icon and Lyrical Genius

His real name is Marshall Mathers, but you probably know him as Eminem. There is a dispute that Eminem is the last great artist of generation X or the first great artist of the millennial generation, and either assumption would be appropriate. He's 37 now, but his music first hit at a time when the music industry was dominated by the first wave of millennial glitz and glamour: boy bands, meaningless rap lyrics, and bling. He was the counter-culture in the early millennial generation, the answer to Britney Spears, N'sync, and the Backstreet Boys. He might belong to generation X age group if we apply a strict definition of that generation's age range, but his music became powerful at a time when millennials were growing up. In 1999, his first album "The Real Slim Shady" LP grabbed the attention of the music business and millennial generation upon its release. At a time when many rappers were stuck in the negating fashions of cliches like the hood life, Eminem pushed the limits of rap

Overview of Affirmative Action

Affirmative Action was put in place in the 1960's to benefit minority groups regarding factors such as race, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and national origin. Such action programs main intentions are to correct imbalances created by past discrimination, while preventing future discrimination against those groups. It takes into account centuries of past discrimination to said groups and hopes to provide them with opportunities, by giving them preferential treatment. Proponents state that racism and sexism still exist, and affirmative action is integral in to eliminating it. These advocates also say affirmative action promotes diversity in colleges and the workplace and produces good social consequences by leveling the playing field. However, critics of affirmative action often see these policies as ineffective and vastly outdated. Stating that the goals focus on the past, in hopes to change the future, which has largely proven unsuccessful for over fifty years. They

Roman History - Vespasian, Titus and Domitian

Throughout history emperors would die, and their empire would be handed down to the next male adult in his bloodline. This tradition was carried out through most ancient governments, and it was no different than Rome. The emperor Vespasian handed the throne to his step-son Titus who eventually handed it to his younger brother Domitian. Historians have called their reign the "Flavian Dynasty." Its ironic that the Roman Empire was one of the longest lasting empires in history, but with the exception of Suetonius' book Lives of the Caesars, there are not that many accounts of some of the rulers. This is especially true with the Flavian Dynasty. In Suetonius' novel, he uncovers the truth about the character, integrity, and lifestyle of each emperor. He discuses their lives starting with their birth, and ending with their deaths. Although they bear some superficial similarities, the differences between the reign of Vespasian and his sons are clear. Titus Flavius Vespasian, or just kno

Living with a Biblical Worldview

A great question that many Christians have tried to answer now I will take my turn to try and answer this great question. God showed how much he truly loved us as flawed men not only did he give his only son as a sacrifice for our sins he also made us in his likeness, showing that regardless of the things that we did to disobey him he still wanted to be connected to us. "Man was made last was made last of all the creatures: this was both an honor and a favor to him" (Genesis 1:26, NKJV). As the saying goes we often save the best for last and that is what God did when he was making the Earth. The almighty father saved his greatest and most prized creation for very last that shows he took a great deal of care and pride when he made man. God could have chosen to make us in in shape and form he desired he could've made us no better than the animals we walk amongst in the world today but he chose to make us superior

Walt Whitman and the Plight of Humanity

9,943,000: that's the number of deaths resulting from the ten worst natural disasters recorded in earth's history. In other words, nature seems almost unbendable to man. There is a constant debate on whether humans should bend to nature or nature should bend to humans. Unfortunately, the prior is true. Think of nature and the earth like a rubber band, every time we as people push its boundaries, the rubber band stretches, eventually snapping back into place with dire repercussions. Man can make its attempts to control the Earth but will surely never win the battle because of a number of factors. Many poets, often transcendentalists, explore this give and take relationship between man and nature, specifically in sections of Walt Whitman's song of myself. In the first section of Whitman

The Iliad and the Glorification of War

War, as a defined by Merrian-Webster.com, is "a state of usually open and declared armed hostile conflict between states or nations" (War). In Homer's epic, "The Iliad," there is a major conflict between Troy and Greece. Due to this conflict, it seems that Homers intent is to glorify the concept of war and violence as a whole. But in further reading of this epic, even with the central theme dominated by war, it is seen as more of a clash of personal relationships between warriors, more so between two central characters, Achilles and Agamemnon. This relationship between Achilles and Agamemnon starts as a basic grouping that is common in any military unit that is found throughout history, that of leader and subordinate. Agamemnon was the king of Mycenae and the general of all the Greek forces, Achilles was the son of a goddess and the greatest warrior of the Greeks. Agamemnon was an excessively prideful, self-centered, and calculating ruler. As king, by royal birthright, he revels in h

Creating a Powerful Brand

Creating a powerful brand value is essential in business. Exceptional brand value creates a good relationship between the seller and buyer. Customers buy into a company's product based on their perceived value of their money. If a company has a powerful and effective message that creates a democratic relationship with the customer, then the brand is a success. Creating powerful brands comes from strong marketing skills. Companies must have an equal balance of sales, advocacy, and awareness of not only the product that they are selling, but the message of the company itself. If a brand successfully achieves these three aspects, they will begin to build credibility and loyal customers. In addition, each brand must understand who their competitors are, and what makes them a

Blue Wings Dancing - Whitecould, Rodriguez, and Macedo

Thomas Whitecloud, an educated Native American, finds himself distant from his people while he and his people are forced to be "imitation white men" (Whitecloud, 3). However, Whitecloud remarkably draws himself closer to his native people, unlike Rodriguez who in order to be a "scholarship boy" had to isolate himself with his native Hispanic roots. As Whitecloud makes his journey home back from college, he is widely welcomed back by not only his family, but the entire Native American community, "Be happy! You are home now--you are free. You are among friends--we are your friends; we, the trees, and the snow, and the lights" (Whitecloud, 3). However, as Rodriguez returns home from college, the reunion with his family his quite different, with his family not

The Scarlet Letter - Public and Private Atonement

In the novel The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the letter A is given to the characters Hester and Dimmesdale. According to the law of the Puritan society and the strict interpretation of the Bible, adultery is one of the deadliest sins that led to the deadliest punishment - execution or corporal punishment. The letter A came to symbolize different things for each character. For Hester, the Scarlet Letter symbolizes her adultery and for Dimmesdale, it is a reminder of his hidden sin. The characters are given different punishments corresponding to their symbolisms. Hester's punishment is to face the public with her guilt, and Dimmesdale has the punishment of hiding his guilt from the public. Hester became stronger from her punishment, but Dimmesdale becomes destructed from his sin. The Scarlet Letter portrays the idea that guilt is harsher and more destructive than public punishments. Hester is persecuted on the scaffold when she is released from prison due to her adultery. Sh

The Possibilities of Equal Opportunity

The United States of America was built on the idea of equal opportunity for everyone. While the idea is great, the reality of it is fading. Today, opportunity is available for those who can afford it. Economic mobility is an unrealistic dream for an average American because there are too many financial obstacles that bridge the vast gap between the rich and the poor. Income growth used to be fairly achievable through hard work and determination, but this argument does not hold true anymore. Marginal income growth for the wealthy, high college costs, and outsourcing of American jobs are major factors that contribute to the failure of economic equality in our country. Income growth in America is disproportionate; it allows the top 1% to further prosper while the bottom 99% struggles. Average Americans do not have the same opportunities to increase their wealth as much as the upper class does. Especially in the U.S economy, people who have a high net worth can invest big, and win big. On

Women on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy

"Women on the Edge of Time" by Marge Piercy, is a novel that illustrates some problems of today's society and compares them to a possible future time. The other world that is presented in the book is called Mattapoisett. Mattapoisett is described as a utopian science fiction place because is much different from the place that Connie lived. Even though Mattapoisett might be the world that Connie's culture needed it is not a perfect world. Some of the problems that Marge Piercy presents in the book are controversial issues within the feminist circles of the seventies such as women's rights and social status in society, gender-related violence, sexism and patriarchal ideology. Focusing on the protagonist's abilities of time-travel, Piercy presents the reader with two incompatible social structures, depicting the present time as an anti-utopia and the future society as a sexless social environment (Sümbül). However, how is the society different from the two cultures presented in the book

Biblical Basis for Christian Counseling

Theological Perspective Is this a punishment? What wrong did I do? Sounds sad, what else do you think the reason may be other than a punishment for your mistake? Do you think God will punish us for every mistake we do? In the bible God allowed tough situations for good people also, Job was an upright man and he shunned evil (Job: 1:1). But he also lost everything. What do you think about that? After the situation Job was blessed double fold, so do u think God is faithful to do that? Very well then, we cannot find reasons for everything. So it's better to stay in mystery rather find reasons which we cannot find. Is God aware of my situation? Does God have eyes? (an Indian phrase) Why do you think God is not aware of your situation? What else do you think God will be doing than looking at you? Do you think he loves you? Isaiah 49:16 says " I have engraved you on the palm of my hands" what do you think about that? In the bible we see God looked upon the bereaved, what do you th

Politics of the Indian Capitalist Class

The politics of the Indian Capitalist class is one of the aspects of the Indian National Movement that has been put to varied and detailed analysis. The role of the Capitalist class in politics becomes significantly important since or after the First World War and it is this period of roughly 1915-47 which this essay aims to concentrate upon. However, this period is a very dynamic period with a lot of changes and developments. Therefore this essay proposes to view the politics of the Indian Capitalist class in a broad perspective throughout the duration and culmination of the Indian National Movement. The emphasis is on the direction and long term goal of the politics of the Indian capitalists instead of the temporary measures taken to achieve that goal. The Indian Capitalist class developed under the constraints of a structurally colonial economy. Starting as a very weak and almost a junior partner of the British Capitalists, by the beginning of the twentieth century, the Indian capi

Pitch and Rhythm in Wheatbelt and Re-Inventions

The pieces "Wheatbelt" by Iain Grandage, and "Re-Inventions" by Elena Kats-Chernin, both bear strong aspects of pitch and rhythm. "Wheatbelt," written for SSAATBB in 2007, is an a capella vocal setting of Western Australia poet Kevin Gillam's poem of the same title. "Re-Inventions," written for recorder and string quartet in 2004, is based on 'Two-Part Inventions' of J.S. Bach. Both pieces reflect the endless opportunities of music through their simplistic nature and own individual sources of inspiration. Grandage's intentions for his piece "Wheatbelt" is to mimic the sounds of the Australian outback, and convey a sense of euphoria experienced when subject to the expansiveness of such an area. A prominent aspect of this piece is the use of the minor second, in which can be heard in the call of the butcher bird. Grandage employs various modes such as Phrygian, Dorian, and Mixolydian to emphasize the flattened second, as it weaves throughout the

Literacy - Advantages and Disadvantages

Education is what we all strive to get. For some its handed down. While for others it is a struggle to get one. It's often said that with education comes advantages and benefits; it's viewed as a ticket to success. The thing that is overlooked is that sometimes education can have its disadvantages too. Richard Rodriguez, an Indian American writer and Malcolm X, an African American Muslim minister and a human rights activist have been smiled upon because of their interest in books and learning. In his essay "The Achievement of Desire" Rodriguez wrote that, "With every award, each graduation from one level of education to the next, people I'd meet would congratulate me. Their refrain always the same: 'Your parents must be very proud.' Sometimes then they'd ask me how I managed it-- my 'success'" (Rodriguez, pg.597). Basically, Richard Rodriguez is saying that because of his education he was being praised. In his essay "Learning to read," Malcolm X wrote that &q

Working with Hispanic Children and Their Families

Assignment Summarize a research article specific to social work practice with Hispanic children and families. Response This week my research lead me to an article "Closing the Achievement Gap: Focus on Latino Students by American Federation of Teachers," (2004). The article talks about educational outcomes for Hispanics in which some signs of progression has improved not much. The article reports Hispanics have an low academic achievement, and the highest dropout rates of any major ethnic group (U.S. Department of Labor [DOL], 2003). In the article it states that Hispanics face multiple barriers to improving academic achievement. With other barriers such as attending that are high poverty, and low- performing that tend to lack in more resources then other schools (AFT, 2004). The lack of access to fully qualified teachers. The article also speaks about parents with low-household incomes, and low levels of formal education is factor. The article speaks about how teachers who lack pr

Angelina Jolie - A Modern-Day Hero

Abstract This paper will talk about the reason why Angelina Jolie should be considered a hero. It will focus on three major reasons, and will talk about them individually. The introduction talks about heroism and Angelina Jolie in general. The second paragraph focuses on the first reason which is the work she put into helping others. The third paragraph discusses the second reason and sheds light on the efforts she puts into helping others. The fourth paragraph focuses on why she was named the Goodwill Ambassador by the UNHCR "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-. After that it shows the claims of why she shouldn't be considered a hero. The response to those claims and then the conclusion. A Modern-Day Hero In many cultures and countries, the definition of a hero changes. Also, as time goes on so does the meanings of so many things that used to be seen as something small and insignificant before. Those things "whether they are devices or symbols- have dev

Themes of Nature in Poetry

One of the main sources of inspiration for artists is the beauty of nature and its relationship with mankind. The poems "The World is Too Much with Us" by William Wordsworth, "The Widow's Lament in Springtime" by William Carlos Williams, and "A Narrow Fellow in the Grass" by Emily Dickinson, discuss this theme using different types of imagery, metaphors, contrasts and comparisons. First, nature is portrayed in these poems as a living entity. There is a sense of motion through imagery. Dickinson describes how the snake "closes at your feet and opens further on" and "Unbraiding in the sun." This description of the snake untangling itself in the sun gives us the feeling of movement in a warm setting and how the sun contracts with the snake. Wordsworth implies movement by using an auditory imagery of the wind: "The winds that will be howling at all hours", which is also a simile to a howling animal. Williams, on the other hand, uses a kinesthetic imagery describing sorrow as "grass flame

Changing Behaviors - Operant Conditioning

Introduction Checking twitter has become a terrible habit of mine. I am never able to get homework done while using an electronic device with Internet access. I always end up spending hours on twitter instead of doing the homework. The reason I habitually check twitter whenever I use technology is due to a lack of punishment. I do not have a consequence for myself when I do not get work done nor do I have a consequence for getting distracted by twitter. Furthermore, this behavior may also have been continued as a result of the rewards. For example, by checking twitter, I am turning my mind away from the stress of homework and other academics. Checking twitter often is a voluntary behavior that can be adjusted with operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is the process in which a behavior is conditioned due to a following response of a punishment or reinforcement (Kalat, 2014). A punishment is a response that decreases the likelihood of the prior behavior while a reinforcement is a response that inc
