The Eco-Friendly Greenwashing of America

Throughout the years, competition between companies has grown more strategic and intense. As a result of this and customers unease about environmental issues, countless organizations have began devoting themselves to draw in buyers by promoting "green" products and services. These "greenwashing" products, which are classified as eco-friendly and organic are certainly not as healthy as they are made out to be. Numerous companies have exaggerated their environmental claims, making it a hassle for customers to decipher real eco-friendly products from green-washed ones. In the article "Weasel Words: The Art Of Saying Nothing At All",  Lutz explains some of the numerous ways that advertisers use language to imply great things about products and services without actually promising anything at all. With substantial skill, advertisers can produce ads that make us believe a certain product is better than it truly is without directly lying about it. In another arti

Music Therapy - Healing Transformations

Abstract Are the effects of music strong enough to be offered in psychotherapeutic sessions and physical therapeutic sessions? Music therapy should be a routine based therapy that helps in everyday life based on therapeutic treatments involving singing bowls and vibrational therapy. The Mozart effect evaluates whether this type of treatment is operational and helpful. The human body can be controlled by music through heart rate and brainwaves. Studies are not always accurate when reporting the effects of the Mozart effect as well as testimonials claiming that certain sounds are not helpful during a meditative process. Many people dislike music therapy because it is a pseudoscience and these treatments are falsely advertised by Don Campbell's case studies prove to be faulty when redone by other scientists, there is no clear study that proves that music can show a definitive response with music and cognitive learning experiences, and results from many experiments prove that the results f

Fast Food Employees and Minimum Wage

Should fast-food workers be paid a minimum of $15/hr? This a question that has been frequently asked by many across the nation since November of 2012 when Fast Food Forward, an SEIU-funded coalition, organized their first strike. It caused many activist to stage protests and demand for higher pay and the formation of a union throughout 150 cities in America. There are many who support the movement and there are also many who don't. Some believe that changing the minimum wage of fast food workers to $15 will be a positive change, while others believe that the change will have negative consequences. I do not believe that the minimum wage for fast food workers should increase to $15. A $15 hourly pay for fast food workers will come with an increase in prices on food items, many people living in poverty will suffer, teenagers will be less motivated to pursue a successful career, and it will not be fair to those who do intense or skilled labor for the same hourly wage. Paying workers $15 a

Jesus and the Act of Confession

Piety is a virtue that is often misunderstood in the present day. While it can result in a legalistic view of God and His Kingdom, it is an invaluable tool for cultivating faith. Confession in particular plays a significant role in many aspects of the Kingdom of God. In looking at the Jewish historical understanding of confession and Jesus' teachings on the matter, it can be seen that this discipline is emphasized because of its relationship to repentance, its overarching connection to being in fellowship with God, and its ability to foster community in the Kingdom. When studying the discipline of confession, it is significant to also look at the way the Jewish people of Jesus' day understood it. In the Pentateuch, specifically Leviticus, God established the practice of confession. Throughout chapters four and five of Leviticus God commands the people of Israel that if they sin, they are to make their transgressions known and then offer an atoning sacrifice. This pattern can be seen i

Problems in the Teaching Profession

It has been said that teaching as a profession is impossible without passion. With all the challenges teachers face today, I wholeheartedly agree. In the teaching community, there are constant debates on a variety of issues ranging from school safety to what's being served in the lunchroom. As a teacher, I will face parents, principals, and politicians who all seem to think their opinion is the right. That being said, I will not be able to please everyone with the decisions that I make, but ultimately I will have to be wise, ensuring that I give my students the best learning experience. I want to be a teacher who thinks of the student's needs first. I want the policies I support, the curriculum I teach, and the grades that I give to benefit the student. In the vast sea of political agendas that flood our education system, people often forget about the individual student. They focus too heavily on test scores, which aren't always the best indicator of a child's intelligence. That bein

Biology Paper - Coleoptiles

Abstract In this study, I determined the average amount of growth that occurs when coleoptiles are exposed to different amounts and concentrations of IAA. I tested the hypothesis if more auxin is given then the plant will experience a larger growth. The tips of the coleoptiles were cut and then placed in different amounts and concentrations of IAA, ranging from .1ppm to 1000.0 ppm, and set in the dark for one week. They were then pulled out of darkness and the growth of each coleoptile was recorded. Results showed that group four (decapitated coleoptile in 1.0 ppm IAA), had the largest average growth of 11.6mm, while group two (decapitated coleoptile in water), showed no growth. This study is relevant to determine the best levels of IAA for plants to grow. Introduction Hormones are natural chemical messages in the body to trigger a receptor into activating a response (Utrecht, 2010). Just as animals have hormones, so do plants. Plant hormones are chemical signals that may stimulate

Hiroshima and Nagasaki - The Atomic Bomb

On August 6, 1945, the world entered the nuclear age when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. Three days later, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki, and on August 14, the Japanese government agreed to an unconditional surrender that all but ended World War II. These bombings halted the planning of Operations Olympic and Coronet, which entailed the full-scale Allied invasion of Japan, and also showed the true power of the American economy and workforce. In these respects, the United States was justified in using the most powerful weapon of the time to end the greatest conflict in human history. Before the successful testing of the atomic bomb, the United States had an elaborate set of plans for the invasion of Japan that were developed in the spring and summer of 1945. According to Davis in the Invasion Not Found in the History Books, an article found in the Omaha World Herald, Operation Olympic would begin with "X-Day" on November

Fighting Tactics of the Korean War

On June 25, 1950 at 11:00A.M., Kim Il Sung(김일성), the president of North Korea, declared war on the South. Fighting went on for three years until 1953 when an armistice was made, but to be clear, the two countries are still officially at war. This war between the Koreas was a mortifying war that not only permanently split a nation apart but was also responsible for the loss of more than 1,560,000 soldiers and civilians that are missing, captured, wounded or dead. This war used 81.6 million tons of materials, 3.55 million tons of ammunition, and in U.S. dollars alone the war cost 22.5 billion dollars. Despite the allies that aided each respected side, this war was ultimately the North Koreans against the South Koreans. In the beginning, North Korea's biggest military sponsor was the Soviet Union as they equipped North Korea with modernized tanks, trucks, artillery, and small arms. Joseph Stalin was a huge factor in the success of the military in driving the South Korean forces all

Themes of Wisdom in A River Runs Through It

In, "A River Runs Through It," by Norman Maclean, the main character, Norman, begins his journey in life trapped within the cocoon of speculation. Gradually, his life experiences enable him to gain the strength to emerge as a butterfly of grace and beauty. Confined within the margins of speculation, Norman did not begin life as smoothly as his brother; he scrutinized every instance. This is initially exemplified as he recants his father's belief that, "Man by nature was a mess and had fallen from an original state of grace." He elaborates that he, thereafter, "Developed the notion that man had fallen from a tree." A fundamental example of childhood speculations, this notion establishes a succession of further speculations, that would continue until late in his life. In valiant attempts to understand reality, Norman derives not answers but questions, not solutions but further enigmas. Every time a seed of speculation is planted, a flower blossoms which sprays even more seeds of speculat

Use of Tone in Huckleberry Finn

It is the parents' job to raise their child. When the parents are present, they help the child grow. While growing physically, the child also grows more mature and loving towards their parents. However, if a parent leaves the family for any reason, that love and maturity towards the parent may begin to fade. Quickly, the child begins to grow bitter and hateful towards that parent that left them and did not help them as they were growing up. If that parent that once left for years decides to come back, the child's view of their parent is very different before he/she left. Similarly, the novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is like that child in that it was once a loving and sweet, but then turns to bitter satire quickly as Mark Twain does not write his book for many years. This abandoned child represents Huck Finn's growth; he began as youngster with a mind like all others, but his mind and himself both matured and were influenced by the difficult actions he was forced to combat.

My Summers on Prince Edward Island

A cool summer sea breeze with a pungent salty smell brushes past my face as I run bare-footed through the dark red island dirt with an enormous carefree smile on my face. There has never been a time in my life when I feel more content and secure than at my cottage in Souris, Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. Throughout my life, I have lived in seven different houses, from New England to California, and attended three different high schools in three years. But the one home that has remained a part of me for more than fourteen years is the little, single-story grey cottage surrounded by a bright green lawn, pink and purple flowers, and a breathtaking Atlantic Ocean view. In addition to all of its beauty, what makes this place so special to me are the memories which have cemented lifelong friendships and bonded our family together through cherished time together. No matter where my family has lived in my lifetime, the haul to Souris, PEI was always a long one. But that time in the car or on the plane has always been worth the sacrifices for me and my family. As a young boy, I could not wait to get out of the car, dispose of my shoes fo

Character Analysis - Frankenstein and the Creature

In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the main characters are determined to learn as much as they can. Mad scientist, Victor Frankenstein, learns how to create life and creates a creature who later becomes able to speak English and learns he is not accepted by neither his creator nor other people. Throughout the story, the creature tries to fit into the human world. In this gothic tale, Shelley uses the characterizations of the Creature and Victor to express how too much knowledge can have negative consequences. Shelley characterizes the creature as hateful to portray how knowing too much will lead to conflict. For instance, the Creature learns to read and write from the cottagers. He later finds papers in Victor's clothes that explain how he was created. The Creature directly states why he is hateful: "I sickened as I read. 'Hateful day when I received life!' I exclaimed in agony. 'Accursed creator! Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in disgus

Prose's Criticism of To Kill a Mockingbird

Francine Prose's criticism of "To Kill a Mockingbird" is vague and lacks the necessary elements to prove her point. She puts this American literary classic in the category of books she qualifies as "of dubious literary merit," "overwrought," and "depressing," yet she is not able to support the claims she makes with any quotes, facts, or sources to adequately prove her point of why the novel belongs with novels categorized with these awful titles. This makes me question her reliability on the topic. Prose believes that "To Kill a Mockingbird" does not have much to offer in the way of deeper moral understanding of other human beings. "To Kill a Mockingbird" shows the lack of understanding we hold fo

Advertisement - Dr. Cocoa Makes Us Smile

Doesn't it seem like most young children fight you to consume some needed medication, but won't hesitate to consume some sweetened unhealthy product? It seems these days like most young children would rather suffer than listen to their mother's or father's guidance. Every year children get sick and mothers and fathers scramble to comfort their kids and sometimes have to get creative in doing so. This is where Dr. Cocoa for children comes in. This morning, nighttime, or non-drowsy cough and cold medicine promises to make children smile and ready and willing to gulp down their product because of the chocolate taste of the medicine. Dr. Cocoa (established in early 2013) also claims to make the mothers smile because of the relief that their children will get from taking this medicine. There is an owl on the advertisement (FamilyFun Magazine, February 2015, pg.35) that also claims that "They don't call me wise for nothing." This can be a very effective advertising that can be eva

Buddhist Philosophy and the Lotus Flower

Buddhism was founded by Siddhartha Gautama in northern India in the beginning of 535 B.C.E. He was born in a rich family, but at the age of 29 he left his family and everything behind to seek enlightenment. This quest took him a long time to achieve the enlightening. After that time, he acquired the title "Buddha" or the 'Awaken One." Overtime, he began to gather a group of disciples who follow him and they continued to spread his believe even after his death for years. They formed a religious known as Buddhism. In the image of Buddha, the one who left everything included his luxury life behind in order to seek for the enlightenment. They chose the lotus flower to be one of the "Eight Auspicious Symbols" in the religion, and it has become one of the most important image in the faith. One of the most important reason why was the lotus flower was chosen to be the symbol of the religion is because the feature of this flower is the same with the way the Buddha enlighte

The Positive Results of Immigration

It is very hard to your place in life, even at home, is not it? In the past, immigration was virtually impossible due to the strict rules of countries; however, nowadays people can travel or even immigrate to anywhere in the world. People can be provoked to immigrate by a number of reasons such as poverty, political disconnect and war. Migration has become one of the components of globalization. People migrate from all around the world in search of best opportunities and a better life. Undoubtedly, immigrants cause effects and lead changes that influence in the country in which they want to assimilate. To be precise, immigration is beneficial for society, government and economy. Firstly, immigration has a positive impact on society. In the modern world, there are a substantial number of social problems such as discrimination, racism, low fertility that exist in different ethnic societies. Most of these societies are developing countries where governments do not pay attention to immigr

Themes of Tolerance - How to Train Your Dragon

The 2010 DreamWorks animated film, "How to Train Your Dragon," encompasses the heroic tale of an oddball outcast and his unlikely companion, a disabled dragon. Contrary to society's portrayal of those who are considered to be outcasts, this film showcases the irony of the outcast being the only individual who is not ignorantly supporting the narrow-minded ways of his people. Continuing in this unusual perspective, the two main characters, who ultimately save the day, also deal with major disabilities. In a disgruntled culture that often frowns upon anyone or anything out of the norm, this film refreshingly approaches the topic that impairment does not have to be viewed as an obstacle. Within first five minutes of this DreamWorks film, the audience is introduced to a burly, and zealous character with a disability, Gobber the Belch. A massive Viking, with weight to throw around, he fearlessly continues to slay dragons even though dragons are the very cause of his having lost both an

The Making of a Hero

A hero is someone who can transform compassion into heroic action. In doing so, they put their best selves forward, and are able to overcome even the most painstaking tasks. A hero doesn't have to be one person, it can be a network of people all with a common goal in mind. This person or people must have certain qualities that enable them to see the world in a different way. They must be brave and stand up to people no one else will. They have to take charge of what's going on in their communities. A hero is someone who has honor, integrity, is a good friend and a problem solver. They don't have to be rich or famous, they can simply be your Grandpa. A hero is someone who listens and not only hears what you say, but sometimes what you don't say. They are there for you when your world gets knocked out from under you, every time you lose your grip on life. They grab your hand when you reach out for help and they hold on and pull you back into the light. They are brave and fearless and

Summary of Genesis - Chapters 1-11

Within Genesis 1-5, we can see a clear change in humanities roles within the world to a point in which humanity becomes somewhat of a threat to God or the Lord God by becoming half divine in the respect that mankind learns about the concept of good and evil. Then the reader can clearly see a within Genesis 6-9 two separate stories in which all humanity is cleansed instead of one devout follower of God/the Lord God and his family. This has led many scholars to believe that the flood stories of Genesis 6-9 are stories of the un-creation and re-creation of what humanity had become back to what God/the Lord God had wanted humanity to be. Within the Genesis 1-2 we see the creation of words in which humanity is born or created in which God/the Lord God had manufactured them for some means. In Genesis 1 mankind was to simply "fill the earth and subdue it," as said in Genesis 1.28, while in Genesis 2 man was made in order to service the world they had been brought into, which can be infer

Doubt by John Patrick Shanley

"The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind"" (James 1:6). Doubt is something that everyone experiences but it is the way you handle doubt that changes everything. Those that see doubt as an obstacle to overcome are better off than those who see it as a setback. In the play "Doubt"" by John Patrick Shanley, we see a conservative nun, Sister Aloysius, at St. Nicholas' Catholic school who has many doubts about the legitimacy and dignity of a certain priest, Father Flynn. Doubt is a strong theme present throughout the play and the ending reveals the negative effects of doubting without valid reason. Although Sister Aloysius' only has circumstantial evidence about Father Flynn's wrongdoings she has serious doubts from the start of the play aimed toward him. In sister Aloysius' eyes father Flynn is not fit for his duty as priest, she is a very old fashioned, to the book, nun which is almost the opposite of what father Flynn is. This could be one o

Literature and Gender Roles

Throughout history, men and women have been constantly associated with ideas and responsibilities. In "The Wife of Bath's Tale"," Geoffrey Chaucer explores the roles associated with women and their view towards men. Shirley Geok-lin Lim emphasizes the relationship between a father and his daughter in "My Father's Sadness"." Man's standard of living is critiqued by women in Scott Russell Sander's, "The Men We Carry in Our Minds"." Gender biases cause women's individual perception to assume positive or negative feelings towards men. The Wife of Bath explains that, "Long, long ago in King Arthur's day, there was a knight who was a lusty liver" (Chaucer 57-58). The Wife of Bath, as a female, addresses her negative feelings towards this knight who she feels is a "lusty liver"." Women in "The Wife of Bath's Tale"," often highlight that their feelings towards men are negative and show that women, during this period of tim

Eating Dirorder and Body Image

"Looks don't matter; beauty is only skin-deep."" We hear these sayings everyday, and yet we live in a society that seems to contradict this very idea. If looks don't matter, then why does the media use airbrushing to hide any flaws that a person has? If looks don't matter, then why are there so many young women harming themselves because they are unhappy with the way they look? It's because society promotes a certain body image as being beautiful, and it's far cry from a woman's healthy size. The unrealistic standard of beauty that women are bombarded with everyday gives them a goal that is impossible to reach and the effects are devastating. Family, community, and the media play a huge role in creating body images. Sadly, there is a strong connection between body image and eating disorders. However, there are many steps that could be taken to improve one's body image. Some major causes of body images are family, community, and the media. First off, let's start with family. According

The Invention of Writing

Early homo sapiens are believed to have evolved from a species that lived in southern Africa. Through evolution and survival development, the use of our hands went from climbing to avoid predators and collecting food to creating inventions and tools for day to day survival (hunting, fishing, digging for vegetation, etc.) After this development, then came the invention of writing, which first began as a series of images and symbols. The earliest human markings were discovered in Africa; they are thought to be over two hundred thousand years old, i.e: The Paleolithic to Neolithic era. Two very famous locations, the Cave of Lascaux and The Altamira, contain elaborate drawings for miles underground. These drawings, ranging from charcoal-made black to a series of warm tones, depict animals, perhaps for ceremonial or religious reasons. Until recent discoveries, archaeologists believed that Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilization, now it is believed that early peoples in Thailand may hav

Improper Waste Disposal and Community Health Issues

Introduction Since the beginning of time, people have needed to find a way of disposing their waste. Waste is a thing that has no purpose; or is not able to perform with respect to its purpose [EPo06]. But to some aspect, according to this definition waste is in the eye of the beholder, as humans assign Purpose and humans evaluate Performance. However, this description also allows for the possibility of the waste being turned into a non-waste, and emphasizes that being 'waste' is a temporary failing that needs to be remedied. It is argued that this definition describes everything as waste. Humans interact with the environment constantly. These interactions affect quality of life, years of healthy life lived, and health disparities. The WHO (World Health Organization) defined environment, as it relates to health, as "all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and all the related behaviors." Environmental health consists of preventing or cont

Anti-Dühring by Frederick Engels

The concept of capitalism is complex and contradictory when studied using an historical approach. However, in order to completely understand the contemporary social structures, it is important to consider how materialism was historically understood and practiced. The modes of production and exchange define the existing social order. This paper particularly focuses upon the excerpt from Anti-Duhring entitled "Theoretical,"" in which Friedrich Engels discusses the historical materialism and the contradictions in the concept of capitalism. By explaining historical materialism and contradictions in capitalism, this paper will further discuss the conflicts that arise from capitalist mode of production. Furthermore, this paper will provide explanation on Engels' vision of the outcome of the historical development of capitalism. Historically, it was considered that the causes of social and political changes in society were based on changes in the mode of production and exchange. Materialism largely established the foundation of social structure. As Engels argued, the basis of every social order "is determined by what is pro
