Growth and Productivity - SPAM

The fundamental growth of the United States' material standard of living is the growth of productivity (Field 1). Productivity is defined as a measure of economic efficiency which shows how effectively economic inputs are converted into outputs (U.S. Dept. Labor 2). It is measured by the output per hour of all persons or it is also known as labor productivity (U.S Dept. Labor 2). According to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the "nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased at a 2.3 percent annual rate during the third quarter of 2014 (U.S. Dept. Labor 1). Also, "output increased 4.9 percent and hours worked increased 2.5 percent (U.S Dept. Labor 1). The unit labor costs fell nearly 1.0 percent in the third quarter of 2014, but there was a 1.3 percent increase in hourly compensation (U.S. Dept. Labor 1). All of these numbers indicate the nonfarm business sector was doing well in the third quarter of 2014. The manufacturing sector productivity numbers also in

Finding My Inner Artist

In life you have many opportunities to make a decision. The opportunities that come maybe very large or they may be very small but it's the opportunities that you take advantage of that really Shape who you are. That may be deciding between a job, or which sport to play, which team to play for. Me, my life, I've made very big decisions. I would not be where I am today if it weren't for the decision to switch from being an athlete to an artist. Although it was a tough decision it was one of the best that I could've made. It was freshman year and I had already started my first activity in high school. I was lucky enough to have a part in The Miracle Worker at my high school. I fell in love with the people and to the feeling of being on stage. I was still playing baseball at the time and still planned on being a part of the high school team. At the time I thought I was put on Earth for one reason: to play baseball. When I was playing, I felt I was put at the short end of the stick by the players and was actually being bullied by most of them. My mom and my dad could tell that I wasn't myself when I would come home and go straight to my room and just liste

Guitar Highway Rose by Brigid Lowry

Works of literature that contain textual integrity effectively examine universal themes of the human experience. Throughout fictional works, such as Brigid Lowry's Guitar Highway Rose, real issues are successfully explored. This is achieved through the examination of real issues such as the need to attain a sense of belonging, a longing for freedom and the journey of self-discovery, and the use post-modern language features to create this 'coming of age' novel. The treatment of belonging within works of literature effectively assists the exploration of universal themes of the human experience. The need to attain a sense of belonging is shown distinctly within Lowry's text through capturing relationships – social, familial, interpersonal and personal – which allows the reader to grasp a deeper understanding of the power of both belonging and a lack of belonging. "No one wants to listen to how it really is to be fifteen and surrounded by the word no". This hig

Marijuana Legalization - A Bad Idea

Marijuana certainly is common, though it should not be. While people think it is great smoking, getting high, forgetting their problems, or even doing it just because their friends are, they do not realize the negative effects. Many times people only see the surface of what the drug does to you. They do not see why it is such a big deal. Upon telling people they should not smoke, their response is often, "Why? You can't get addicted."" Addiction is not even the worry. The worry is in how much marijuana use can take away from your ability to think and do. Your chance of success drops, and you may not get nearly where you potentially could have before becoming a user. Debates over this issue have been going on since 1906, getting more serious in the 1920's, and by the 1930's marijuana was regulated in every state. Now, here we are in 2014 legalizing marijuana for medical use in many states, and even legalizing for recreational use in some states. Do we not see the concern? Opponents to

The Ownership of Antarctica

Antarctica is like no other continent on Earth. It is one that many don't know much about but has so much to offer and should never be possessed by a nation. Antarctica should remain a continent un-owned and free for its natural purpose on this planet. It is a unique mass that is vital to our planet due to its natural resources and abundance of open land. From land to see it is home to a large diversity of animals native to this one continent that we have much more to learn about. Having the appearance of a large mass of ice it may shock many that Antarctica is actually considered a desert because it experiences no rainfall. And as it may be home to many species, humans are not on that list. Scientists from several countries have contributed their time and money for research but it is uninhabited. Some may say this leaves the land up for grabs but there is no need for people to migrate there and it is the last known land on earth that is still preserved and should remain that way. (Ant

What Makes Me Who I Am

I believe that who a person becomes is half who they really are and half who their parents are. I am the product of a middle class, hardworking man and woman. My parents are my biggest fans, but also my biggest critics. They push me to be everything I'm capable of being. My parents are the most important people in my life and I hope that when I become a parent, I will be able to do as good a job as they have done. I grew up in such a loving and caring environment. I couldn't imagine where I would be without the love and support they give me every day. I'm the baby of my family. I have two sisters and one brother. My oldest sister graduated from EIU with a Business Degree. She married right out of college and had my first nephew not long after that. Holding my nephew for the first time 6 years ago changed my entire perspective on life. Four years later she had my second nephew and he stole my heart just like his big brother did. My other sister graduated from EIU with an Elementary Educ

Global Workplace Philosophy

"Some immigrants reject the dominant culture in fear they will lose their own culture" (Varner & Beamer, 2011, p.6). I was born in Mexico and lived there a big part of my life, I recently became a US citizen and I am grateful for that, but that does not mean that I will forget my roots and where I come from. I specially notice it because I am from a border town. All my life I've been used to interacting with two different cultures even though we are separated with just a river, the difference is a lot. You can quickly know when someone who lives in the US is from Mexico and not only because they speak a different language but rather because the way they act, or the way they see the world and their mindset in certain things. "When circumstances dictate, they make the transition from one culture to another easily" (Varner & Beamer, 2011, p.11), I had to make transition without leaving who I was as a person, how I was raised, and how I see the world; I adapted. Cause and Effects of Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina was one of the strongest storms to impact the coast of the United States during the last 100 years." ("Hurricane Katrina" from NOAA) Hurricanes all start in tropical waters because they can only start in warm waters. The wind and air conditions must be just right, and once a hurricane is started it can be moved around by powerful winds. They are basically a very deadly cyclone of wind and water. They range from category 1 to category 5, with 5 being the worst. The most deadly hurricane was on September 8th, 1900 in Galveston, Texas. Hurricane Katrina was the worst storm in the past decade to hit the U.S., and caused lots of damage and got the people mad at their government. On August 23rd 2005 the hurricane started off as a tropical depression, but the next day it became a tropical storm. Its wind speed increased from 75 mph, to 80 mph, to 90 mph, to 125 mph in a few days time period. According to an article from NCDC "Katrina reached maximum wind speeds on the morning of Sunday August 28th of over 170 mph" (Hurricane Katrina from NOAA) It was ver

The Feminization of Poverty

Humanity has evolved in a male-centered, patriarchal society. Historically, men were always the main suppliers of food and money. Women were the ones who had a duty to look after the home and raise the children. Women were financially dependent on men and lost their financial support as a consequence of separation, divorce and/or death. Over the last century, Canadian women have increasingly participated in paid employment; however, women continue to struggle for equal opportunities such as job advancement and pay equality. This essay illustrates that women's work is not recognized as equal to men as women are paid less for the same positions. Also they tend to hold the majority of low paid occupations. The discourse within these inequalities will be discussed along with theoretical approaches that can be used to help women overcome this systematic inequality. Statistics on Poverty among Women and Current Obstacles Women Face in Relationship to Employment Currently in Canada, women co

Narrative - Philip Pirrip in Great Expectations

Salutations, my bibliophilic colleagues. My name is Philip Pirrip, oftentimes called Pip. I am a fictional character created by Charles Dickens during the prosaic year of 1861. My childhood was a tarnished reality of orphanism. My parents died when I was 2, and since then, my sister – who is 20 years older than me - Mrs. Joe Gargery and her husband, Joe Gargery have taken care of me. Joe is a blacksmith and my best friend. My childhood was consumed in the marsh area of Kent, twenty miles from the British Channel. Now, I am 35 years old; please allow me the honor of narrating the manuscript of my life. When I was small, I was fragile and never was strong. Although, I seemed to be destined for a career as a blacksmith. However, an unanticipated manacl

Sia and the Elastic Heart Controversy

Social media and other networks in the technological world such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr have a huge impact on what is accepted or denied in society. One example is the famous pop star Sia, known for her number one hit song "Titanium." She recently released a new music video called "Elastic Heart," which features her interpretive dancers, Maddie Ziegler from the well known show "Dance Mom's," and actor Shia LaBeouf known for countless movies such as "Transformers" and the more recent "Fury." This music video has not only sparked interest but also negative comments that mainly include pedophilia, which has spread all over the entertainment news. Sia's "Elastic Heart" video has Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler as interpretive dancers, dancing in nude colored leotards in a zoo like cage. This video has reached ninety-three million views in three weeks according to YouTube. No one really knows what the video is about but according to comments under the YouTube video, it could be

A Study of Christianity, Judaism and Islam

As a man who was born into an atheist family, I've never frequented any place of worship before. The closest I've ever come to any religion was walking past the local Roman Catholic Church on my way home from school (I lived in New York, not South Carolina). The only personal religious experience I've had was going to my best friend's First Communion in this same Roman Catholic Church. At the time, I didn't understand what the true purpose of it was, only that we were going to get to party afterward. Despite having a Church in the middle of town, religion wasn't something the town emphasized. It was commonly thought that religion and prayer should not be included in the schools. Therefore, unless your parents introduced you to religion, it was normal to have atheistic views. That's why it was a major change for me going from a small town in New York to Charleston, South Carolina. After living here three years now, one thing has certainly become apparent: Charleston is a thriving reli

The Need for Language Policy and Planning

Language Policy and Planning go together. Language Policy is the legal and statutory measures aimed at regulating language use, while the Language Planning is language policy's practical implementation or execution that hinges upon goals, strategies and assessment of outcomes. (Rubin 1983) Hence in Language Planning literature both Language Planning and Language Policy and Planning (LPP) are used interchangeably. I am quite enamoured by the slogan placed in the top right of the letter of invite sent by the organizers of the Global Conclave for Konkani Language Planning: "Respecting every variety; Seeking unity in diversity; Promoting a common identity." It is not only illuminating but also envisionary. It envisions political life in ways that will sharpen, deepen and extend the grounds for developing a better understanding about the significance and meaning of language policy and planning informed by geopolitical events and actions at the national and international levels.

Overview of Leadership Development

Followership Before starting this class I just got into followership and it's importance to leading. The idea was foreign to me until I experienced it being an Orientation leader. Being in a group of outstanding leaders means some will have to stop and follow or else it would just be a shouting match of who is the "best leader." When Lieutenant Colonel Decker Hains came to speak to our class I asked him about the difficulties of having such dominant leadership in the ROTC and how it affected them. I remember him bringing up followership and expressing how leadership does not mean the one leading the group, but also the guy in the back or the middle cooperating and leading from their position. Followership in my eyes is the ability to take direction well. Being the flip side of leadership it is not looked upon often, but to have to ability to follow can and will essentially help you grow as a leader. To succeed in a group environment it is important to deliver what is expect

Biography of Geronimo

As a Chiricahua Apache, Geronimo believed that he should stand up for the rights of his people by showing that in anyway and every way he possibly could. Hooray for Geronimo, the American people cheered for the most famous Indian warrior to have ever lived, as he passed by on horseback in the inaugural parade of President Roosevelt. The Americans hold Geronimo's name on a pedestal; however, the Chiricahua Apache Indians do not consider him a hero rather hold him obliged for the suffering and discomfort of their people. Geronimo was born into the Bedonkohe tribe of the Apache Indians in 1829. The Bedonkohe children are taught to hunt with bows and arrows and to run at a very early age, which Geronimo achieved at the age of six. He also helped in the fields with planting and cultivating, as he got older. His mother taught him how to pray and his father told him of the adventures and excitement of the warpath of their people. He was taught that when you have a disagreement with someone,

Personal Experience - Breaking My Nose

The pain was awful, blood everywhere. It was that moment when I realized that my nose is broken. All I can remember was a softball, blood, and me yelling. I've never seen so much blood in my life, all over me, the garage and the towel. I know I may be playing this out like a huge scene, even though it's just a broken bone. But there's a story behind it, one you're going to want to hear. The sounds, sights and feelings while this whole ordeal happened were crazy at the time and I would never want to re-live them. It was a Tuesday night, we just got home from my sisters softball game and we were all still outside chilling because it was a gorgeous night. My sister, my brother and I were all playing softball, and I needed to go inside for a minute. So I went inside and when I came outside, all hell broke loose. I walk into the garage, and the last thing I remember was seeing blood all over the floor. What had happened was my sister went to throw the softball into the garage, so when she

FOREX - The Foreign Exchange Rate

There have been stable foreign exchange markets in one form or another for centuries. Their stability can be linked to the fact that there was no real speculation before WWI. Between the years of 1931 and 1973, the foreign exchange markets went through drastic modifications and by 1973, the creation of the modern foreign exchange market, or FOREX, was set in motion. In 1944, the Bretton Woods Accord was created in order to create a stable international monetary environment, which then made the US dollar become the benchmark currency rather than gold. To its demise, it ultimately achieved its goal and was abandoned by 1971 when the US dollar as no longer able to be converted into gold. This was due to former President Nixon's

Natural Resources in Developing Countries

The "paradox of plenty," also referred to as the "resource curse", is meant to represent the notion that states with an abundance in natural resources, such as crude oil, tend to be accompanied by rising levels of poverty. Countries that are more dependent on natural resource wealth, like Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Saudi Arabia, grow more slowly than those that are resource-poor, like Taiwan and Korea, and are more likely to suffer through unstable leadership and institutions, poor social capital, and an increased likelihood of conflict. This study will focus on the role of institutions and their arrangements in regards to the "paradox of plenty." The "resource curse" vanishes for countries with stable administration and better institutions, like Norway, due to how the resource rents, which is to say the returns from the investment of the extractions are being distributed, while countries rich in resources, like Iran and Saudi Arabia, are still developing a

The Marijuana Debate

A CBS News poll after the November elections found that as many Americans now favor legalizing marijuana as those who favor its prohibition which only a year earlier 51 percent opposed legalization and 40 percent favored it, the other nine percent were undecided. Mostly people under 45 now support legalization, while it remains strongly opposed among those over 65. Colorado and Washington remain the only two states that have legalized marijuana for recreational use. They have both set ordinances and guidelines to regulate the use, amount, and distribution of Marijuana. The Obama administration's views on enforcing federal laws to outweigh the state laws of marijuana use still remains unclear. No federal action to reprimand that state laws have taken place. Whether you agree with the use of marijuana for recreational purposes or not, the use for marijuana for medical reasons stands as an entirely different debate. 83 percent of Americans favor the medical uses of marijuana which has

Conditioning the Mind for Excellence

The ability to learn and retain new things is a gift, the way the human brain works is like nothing else no other known species have brains like humans. Different types of learning can be more or less affective depending upon the subject at hand. We can use different types of conditioning to train our brain or to train others to better ourselves. Learning can be observed not only in school but in all aspects of every day life in the form of conditioning. First discovered by Ivan Pavlov, classical conditioning is the first of the two forms of conditioning. Later discovered by B.F. Skinner, operant conditioning is the second form of conditioning. Although Classical and Operant conditioning share many similarities, their differences can be clearly seen through their applications and affects. Classical Conditioning consists of teaching a subject to respond to a previously neutral object such as a bell that signals the subject that it its time to do a task such as eat. Once the subject

Sociological Imagination and C. Wright Mills

Sociological imagination, a term introduced by sociologist C. Wright Mills in 1959, refers to the ability to recognize that an individual's private troubles are a product of the public issues, and that the individual have not full control of it. It can help to provide a better understanding about the current social problems facing our nation. One of the most frequent social problems is the high rate of unemployment in the United States. Some of them are beyond an individual's control, and they actually are a reflect the social context. Although Social Imagination does not encourage the idea that sometimes people do not have choices, they do have options and responsibilities. It can provide solutions to common problems. Unemployment is due to different social actions, historical and cultural factors that are common across the states. In order to better understand the concept of Sociological Imagination one must understand the meaning of private troubles, and social issues separately an

Personal Statement - How I Ruined My Future

Ever since I was a little kid I have always enjoyed playing baseball. Hi my name is Jim and I am the closing pitcher for my high school baseball team. During my freshman season I realized how much talent I had when I was promoted to play varsity instead of on freshman. Now lets fast forward to my senior year, where I have a lot of the same worries on my mind as every other senior college, girls, and popularity. To start our season, we played the defending state champions at home. During the game I tried to focus my mind on the game, and before I knew it a call was made. The call was for me to warm up, the score was 3-2 in the top of the ninth. I was astonished we were ahead, I was on pure adrenaline and it didn't matter how much I warmed up. My arm was feeling the best it ever has in the past. As I threw the ball around, I saw my dad, who was my biggest fan. I stopped warm ups as dad came up to me and said, "There are three college scouts and a pro scout here to watch you! "I replied,

The Civil Rights Act of 1964

Throughout American history and even to this day, African Americans have always struggled for their rights. Jill Karson, a published author states, "Many consider the civil rights movement to have begun not in the 1950's, but when African Americans were first brought in chains, centuries earlier to American shore" (Karson 11). Kate Masur highlights, that as early as the Reconstruction period, blacks fought against their enslavement and demanded fundamental citizenship rights. This movement eventually laid the foundation for the Civil Rights act of 1964 (Karson 13). The long civil rights movement behind the act really took off after the Second World War and peaked during the late 50's and early 60's. However, what several people in today's society don't realize is that there was more to it than just the desire to end segregation. In a broader perspective, it was also a fight against unfair wages, job opportunities and lack of freedom, in addition to diminishing racism. The de

The Canadian Fur Trade Rivalry - 1790-1821

The increasing commercial activities and call for consumer goods in the late 17th century led to the development of various manufacturing enterprises, including the North American fur trade, which was involved in the acquisition, exchange, and sale of animal furs. The first official fur trade company installed in North America went by the name of the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), and was charted in 1670 by Charles II, thus making the Company "the true and absolute Lordes and Proprietors" of a huge piece of territory in North America described as "all the Landes Countryes and Territoryes upon the Coastes and Confynes of the Seas" of Hudson's Bay and the river system that drained into it. Furthermore, the Charter imposed the Hudson's Bay Company to trade exclusively with Great Britain while failing to give the Company exclusive right to trade in the area given to it, which would later prove to be detrimental to the HBC financial stability. Nevertheless, the Charter wa

Youth and Gang Participation

One of the largest growing epidemics in the world today is the growing popularity of gang activity and violence. A gang is a group or organization of individuals that form together to create an alliance in which to create a "family." The Department of Justice states that there at close to 27,400 gangs with more than 744,000 gang members (Trusty, 2013). This number is reaching new heights with the growth of poverty and the decline of a strong economic structure, which can create an atmosphere where everyone is at risk. This number is reaching new heights with the growth of poverty and the decline of a strong economic structure, which creates an atmosphere in which everyone is at risk. Members usually join gangs in their youth years for various reasons such as wanting a sense of belonging, poverty, protection, perceived respect, peer pressure, and family association which leads to a vast majority of crimes including drug dealings, murders, robberies, and other heinous crimes.
