The Impact or Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. had a large impact on modern American history. He spoke of non-violent ways to create a society of equality that stirred in many people's hearts. He fought with his words and beliefs, not with violence. He reached many people in his speeches and even got to speak to thousands of people at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., where he spoke these words that changed the way people looked at segregation: "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed." The first four words of this marvelous speech are the most repeated and the most known words in a quote of all time. Whenever someone is asked about Martin Luther King Jr. they would most certainly think of these famous four words. He truly believed that all men are created equal and this was what united people to him, but his life was short-lived. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He only got to preach t

Superman Syndrome (XYY Syndrome)

One boy is born with Superman syndrome, otherwise known as XYY syndrome, almost every day in California. XYY syndrome is a genetic condition where a male homo sapien is born with an extra male (Y) chromosome, giving a total of 47 chromosomes verses the usual 46. The cause is "nondisjunction in the second meiotic division of spermatogenesis" according to Dr. Robert Tissot. If chromosomes fail to separate before turning into gametes, every sperm cell will be afflicted with an extra Y chromosome. Symptoms of XYY syndrome are unusual height, average to low IQ's, and an increase in aggression. XYY syndrome cannot be cured and there are no available treatments, however, symptoms can be reduced if diagnosed early with special therapy such as; speech, physical or occupational, and educational therapy. Studies are in the making with hormone testing and chromosome analysis to determine the medical mystery of why an extra copy of a Y chromosome leads to towering heights, learnin

How to Make a Clay Box

There are so many different ways of making and constructing a project made of clay. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand and remember all the steps needed to preform and build a project. Throughout this step by step guide, I hope you are able to further your knowledge of clay and the amazing things you can accomplish with it. The first step to making your project is to decide exactly what it is that you want to make. For our purpose, let's say your making a clay box. After you have made your choice, then you must then get on the appropriate attire. Appropriate attire would include anything that can get dirty, but nothing that is to lose and could potentially get in your way. The next thing you need to do is to get all the tools you need to complete your project. These tools could include, a needle tool, a felting knife, a ruler, a rolling pin and of course the clay. When choosing your clay, you must be very careful because there are many different stages that the clay can be in

George Balanchine and the Art of Ballet

"The ballet is a purely female thing; it is a woman, a garden of beautiful flowers, and man is the gardener." This quote by George Balanchine exemplified his view on the significant role women played in the art of ballet. Balanchine is regarded as the greatest contemporary choreographer in ballet, as he is known for being the father of American Ballet. Another one of Balanchine's famous quotes, "Ballet is woman" refers to the movements in ballet showing womanhood and ballet helping girls mature into women (3.1.6). Balanchine strengthens the theory of the importance between gender and types of dancing with his view on women and ballet. Ballet Russes (3.1) was one of the singular works we learned about in lesson 3. In the early 1900s, they toured throughout North and South America, and were well known for their ground breaking artistic collaborations. "When the Ballet Russes toured America and the world, they astonished audiences with artistry never before seen"

A Rose for Emily - Uses of Symbolism

"A Rose for Emily," by William Faulkner, tells us a story about Miss Emily Grierson. The story is divided into five sections, and each one has its own topic about events in Emily's life. The first section is about Emily's death and how people in her town attend her funeral. In the second part, the narrator describes a time which is about thirty years earlier when she refuses an inquiry of the town leader. In the next part, the narrator talks about the illness that Emily has suffered for a long time. The fourth section is about the fears of people in town. People are afraid that Emily kills herself with poison. In the last part, the narrator describes what happens after Emily's death. In this story, language plays an important role. It not only makes the story more interesting but also makes readers follow the events more closely and think about those more clearly. Three elements of language I find interesting in this story are symbolism, irony and imagery. The symbolism is

The Mount Pleasant Riots of 1991

In May of 1991, street riots broke out in Mount Pleasant, Washington, D.C. The streets were filled with rocks, bottles, burning buildings and clouds of tear gas as police in riot gear pursued groups of young adults through the predominantly Hispanic areas of Mount Pleasant. The 1991 riots in Mount Pleasant were important because they were a pivotal time in the history of Mount Pleasant and Washington, D.C. The riots began as a disturbance involving Hispanic young adults after an officer shot a Hispanic man. Police said that this man was detained for public drinking. This shooting quickly turned into a rampage of African-American and Hispanic young adults. These riots consisted of dozens of relatively small groups moving throughout one particular area of Washington, D.C. The safeway on Co

Promotion of Twirla - Transdermal Patch

Currently, there are many different types of transdermal patches on the pharmaceutical market. This technology has been used in various ways, from helping people to quit smoking to use as a birth control. The ways these brands have marketed themselves is very important to see how they have done it, what they have done well, and how Agile can do it better. Being a birth control patch, one needs to take into account that the target market is very specifically women, which makes it different from say, a nicotine patch. Keeping this in mind we have analyzed and discussed the marketing efforts of other patches and how they can be applied to Twirla. We mainly used the Internet for our research of different types of patches and their marketing methods. We also did some research in female-targeted magazines, such as Shape, Cosmopolitan, Women's Health, and Self. We googled "Birth control patches" to see what websites and brands were first to appear, we then googled specific transde

History of the Steamboat

During the nineteenth century, steamboats were the best way to transport goods on the Mississippi River. It was the first way of transportation that could be sent upstream. Before the steamboat, goods and information would be sent on flatboats down the Mississippi River to hopefully make it to the correct destination. Steamboats were used often until the railroads came into the picture in the early twentieth century. Americans John Fitch and James Rumsey were the first to make an attempt at building a steamboat in the 1790s. Although the partners had many good designs and ideas, they did not catch on with the public. Oliver Evans followed Fitch and Rumsey by fastening a steam engine on a boat, attaching wheels to the boat, and driving it through Philadelphia. This display proved that steam power had a bright future in the transpo

The Doomed Weimar Republic

The Weimar Republic was a democratic government that came into power after the First World War. It is clear that this democratic government was destined to fail from the onset for several reasons. The Dolchstosselegende, failure to bring about fundamental socio-economic-judicial change, Ebert Groener Pact, right wing violence, the split of the left wing, and Article 48 of the Weimar constitution. All displayed how the Weimar Republics' eventual failure was evident from the beginning. The Dolchstosselegende was a political impact of the Versailles Treaty, was an indication the Weimar Republic was doomed from the start. The Dolchstosselegende or 'stab in the back' legend was a belief that the German army had not been defeated in the field but had been "stabbed in the back" at home by socialists, pacifists, Jews and democratic politicians who became recognised as the November Criminals. This idea provided fertile propaganda for the anti-democratic right wing political pa

Making America a Smoke-Free Zone

According to the American Lung Association (ALA), cigarette smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, 69 of which are known to cause cancer. Cigarettes have taken over so many people's lives and it's even affecting those surrounding them. It's so expensive money wise and health wise, It's a mystery to me that so many people continue doing it. No matter where you go, you'll see it somewhere. Its pretty much impossible for you to get away from it. You'll see it in movies, on commercials, billboards, people around you, everywhere! Smoking is being advertised everywhere, it's even influencing kids as young as twelve (sometimes younger) to start up this bad habit. What people don't understand is that they are doing very dangerous things to their bodies which they could prevent. Lung cancer is becoming more and more popular, and the main cause is smoking. Everybody is aware of how bad tobacco and nicotine is for you, but yet since everybody else is doing it's okay for them to keep smoking. M

Graduation by Maya Angelou

In the year 1940, 75 years after slavery was abolished, African Americans were still experiencing hateful and demoralizing discrimination. In Maya Angelou's "Graduation," she describes her roller coaster of emotions on her 8th grade graduation day. Angelou was an acclaimed poet, author, dancer, actress, playwright, director, and civil rights activist. In 1993, she recited her poem, "On the Pulse of the Morning," at President Clinton's inauguration. However, it was Angelou's legendary writings that set her apart. Her autobiography, I Know Why The Cage Bird Sings, was nominated for numerous awards, and remains an essential book for many. Through a variety of literary techniques, such as metaphor, simile, personification, and imagery, Angelou presents the hardships of being a young black citizen in America during 1940 in "Graduation". Yet, it was the racist speech that Mr. Donleavy gave that led Angelou to a personal realization. As Angelou recounts her gradu

The IMAX Movie Experience

IMAX is a widescreen move theater that creates images ten times larger than the standard size. It is apart of three different industries including photographic equipment, video and picture production and also video distribution. IMAX is in a very competitive and risky environment with rivalries such as Columbia Studios, Pixar, and Netflix. The business within this particular industry is risky since a film production needs a huge investment. Expansion is a big opportunity for IMAX, as it is expanding overseas, opening new theaters in international countries including China, Russia, Brazil and India (Vlessing). I think threats of new entrants are low because barriers are really high since the film industry requires high investment and huge expertise. Some ch

The Influence of To Kill a Mockingbird

When I initially heard that we were going to be reading "To Kill A Mockingbird" in my tenth grade English class, I didn't know what to expect. I had heard that it was a classic and needed to be read by generations to come. When I asked past tenth graders, some of their opinions differed. "Um, it's O.K.," or "It's boring," were some of the responses I gathered. Eventually, after absorbing multiple opinions, I decided to read the book with an open mind. To Kill A Mockingbird has had an influence on me ever since I picked it up. To understand why this book influenced me, one must understand the book and know the underlying theme of "To Kill A Mockingbird." During the Great Depression, Scout and Jem Finch live with their father, Atticus, in a sleepy house in Maycomb, Alabama. Soon, their friend Dill visits and the three are suddenly obsessed with the idea of exploring the unnerving Radley lot

Moral Decay in Oryx And Crake

In "Oryx and Crake," Margaret Atwood depicts the ruins of a dystopian society once ruled by power hungry corporations. Snowman, the main character of the novel and seemingly the only real human alive, is left to survive in the contaminated environment his society has created. Through the main character's recollection of the past Atwood is able to develop the theme that a society no longer governed by morals or ethics can lead to destruction. As the novel begins, the reader is immediately exposed to Snowman's extremely poor living conditions. Snowman is homeless and surviving on the little food and resources he has. From day to day Snowman is constantly faced with his deteriorating mental state. Female voices torment him, whispering in his ear as he struggles to hold onto his sanity. Along with this Snowman is constantly dodging several mysterious crosses of animals like wolvogs, a mix between a wolf and dog or the dangerous pigoons, a mix between a human and pig. Snowman is barely abl

Charlotte Brontë and Feminism in Jane Eyre

When I was deciding what kind of approach I should use for the novel of Charlotte Brontë Jane Eyre, I was reading the author's CV and I was surprised that she published her novel just as some of her other works under the pseudonym Currer Bell. Was it because she wasn't sure of the success which had avoided her till that time, or was it because in her novel Jane Eyre she opened the 13th chamber in question about status of women in society in the beginning of the 19th century? The status of women is society. There were undoubtedly some other writers who dealt with this question, e.g. Jane Austen, but the heroine of Brontë is something different because she has no high social status, she is poor, uninteresting, small and plain and Quaker-like girl. Nevertheless her personality is standing out above the others, because she is not following contemporary convention, but she venerates equality of rights and gender instead of submission. "Women are supposed to be very calm

The Meaning of Happiness

What is happiness? A question that human race has been trying to figure out for centuries. From Plato's "The Allegory of the Cave" to hundreds of recent experiments on human behavior such as "The Marshmallow Test", researchers and philosophers have came up with lots of definition of happiness from different point of views. Everything happens for a reason, and one thing can trigger another thing to create a chain effect, so it is people's decision to make the connection of two specific events, and that's also how happiness forms. Happiness is caused by a series of related events combined. It could be either a side product of a process but it could also be the result of it. The description of happiness varies, but the production of happiness is always depend on a chain effect that happen in people's life on a daily bases. The Way Things Go by Peter Fischli and David Weiss and The Production Line of Happiness by Christopher Williams will be discussed in the following pa

Research Paper - Global Positon Systems

GPS or Global Position System is an electronic system, which is use satellites, to determine the position on the planet of someone or something. The U.S. Army invented and developed the GPS during the Cold War for military use. A few years later, the system became public and accessible to all. Today, GPS is the first location-based system. Gay Marriage - Love and Law

Does the equal protection clause in the fourteenth amendment guarantee same-sex couples the right to marry? If same-sex marriage were to be federally legalized would the sturdy backbone of our culture be broken? Is it not morally wrong to deny the citizens of the United States of America the basic human right to marry? Is it governments place to define marriage and love? The United States of America is desperately striving to answer these intense questions but it seems that everyone has a different opinion on what is moral and what is lawful. Same-sex marriage is currently an extremely hot issue in The U.S. While the majority of younger people accept same-sex marriage and don't understand why so many people oppose it, many people oppose same-sex marriage for various reasons (To have and to hold; Gay marriage). In fact, young Americans (those ages 18-29) are some of the strongest proponents of allowing gay and lesbian couples to engage in marriage. Seventy-two percent of them support it

The Issue of Juvenile Gangs

Gang violence is an issue that grows larger by the day here in America. According to the National Youth Gang Survey, youth gangs are defined as having three or more members generally aged between twelve and twenty four years of age, sharing an identity typically liked to a name or symbol, members view themselves as a gang and are viewed by others as a gang, group has some permanence and organization, and the group is involved in an elevated level of criminal activity (National Institute of Justice). The gang problem in America is one of the largest threats to society. There have always been gangs but today they pose their greatest threat. Gang activity can range from simple graffiti to first degree murder. It seems that the gang related acts of violence reported on the news daily are getting more brutal now than ever. We as a country and as individual communities need to act now and employ anti-gang programs and strategies that will prevent our youth from throwing their lives away like they have been doing so frequently over the past decade. Juveniles across the world join gangs for many different reasons. They join gangs because they feel

The State of Refugees in Australia

Introduction Australia is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention which defines who is a refugee, the rights of the refugees and the responsibilities of the nations which grant asylum. Therefore the Australian government is obliged to protect the refugees that enter their territory, according to the terms of the Refugee Convention. However, there has been an arising problem with how the Australians treat the refugees seeking asylum. Reports indicate that the Australians illegally resettle and detain refugees, including children, in bad living conditions in Papua New Guinea, against their rights defined in the Refugee Convention. Brief History The Australians are convinced that they are "drowning" with refugees, having the amount of asylum seekers amounted to as high as 10 percent of the Australian immigration. The number of refugees entering Australia was at a peak of almost 13,000 back in 2001 and it was still as high as 11,505 asylum seekers in 2013. Therefore they hav

Effects of Overfishing Bluefin Tuna

Conservationists are taking measures across the globe to protect endangered species that have reached dangerously low population levels. The Bluefin tuna is one such species that has gotten to a level of endangerment as a direct result of exploitative fishing practices. The species, which inhabits the southern hemisphere, has been recognized as an endangered species for the past 60 years. Bluefin tuna are being overfished throughout the southern hemisphere for their high commercial value in competitive fish markets. The Bluefin tuna is not the type of tuna that people purchase in canned tuna containers; it is the tuna that one orders at sushi restaurants in the form of sashimi. Demand for this fish's unique flavor has pushed fishermen to overfish it to a point where it is nearly extinct in the wild. Demand for the Bluefin tuna is greatest in Japan; 80% of all captured Bluefin goes into Japanese fish markets where it is bought, sold, and consumed (Bergin, 1996). Marine conservationists

The Five Major World Religions

The earth consists of five major world religions: Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Most people practice their religion as an escape from all of their misfortunes and to find forgiveness for all of their sins. However, many people argue that religion is outdated and only holding us back by dividing the people of the world. What they fail to realize, however, is that religion helps to unite the people around us in more ways than one. Islam and Christianity both evolved from the religion of Judaism so they all have quite similar beliefs. For example, each of these religions has at least one holiday and one holy day. Judaism has Hanukkah, Christianity has Christmas and Easter, and Islam has Eid and Ramadan. The Islamic holy day lies on a Friday at the mosque while the Christians celebrate their religion at church on a Sunday morning. The Hebrew (Judaism) people celebrate their holy day in the middle, on a Saturday, and practice from sundown

Personal Unemployment Interview

How did you become unemployed? I quit my job working as a manager at Togos because my grades suffered in college. Work took up most of my time and I had no time to do my homework or study for exams. I told myself that it was not worth it to make minimum wage and sacrifice my education. Therefore I made the decision to quit my job and focus on my studies. Even after graduating from college, the reason why I am still not working is because I am studying for the MCAT exam. How has unemployment affected your life? Unemployment has made me rely on my family a lot more. I have to depend on them for financial support which has strained my family because my parents are separated. My father lives in England and I live here with my mom. My mom does not have a stable job. There are months when she does not work and we struggle for money. We worry about how we are going to pay for bills such as the mortgage. Without a steady income, life has gotten harder. There are times when I second guess spending and my hand is so much

Concepts of Classroom Management

The courses I have taken at the university of Balamand (UOB) helped me improve a lot of my writing and speaking skills. Critical thinking has also played an essential role in developing the way I teach my students. Resource analysis has added to the way I choose the English books. Recently, Introduction to Educational Management (IEM) has come up with a new intervention within my educational field. I never thought of being a principal, a supervisor, or any kind of leaders before. However, IEM has changed the way I think and work. In IEM, I have to submit a reflective paper about the whole course. This reflection paper requires me to reflect on my present teaching career and my plan to my future educational course. Since, reflection "provides data for self-evaluation and increases learning from experience (Saylor, 1990, p.1)", I believe this paper adds the most important elements to my educational development. Before I started the English Language Teaching (ELT) program at U
