The Epic of Beowulf and Sir GawainBeowulf, an epic written between the 8th and 11th century was first told in Anglo-Saxton England. This epic follows a young, brave, and powerful warrior who risks his life to save and protect others. He battles monsters above, and below land, and he slays dragons. He is the strongest of all men, and never backs down from a challenge. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a romantic poem that takes place in the Arthurian period. This poem introduces King Arthur's nephew, Sir Gawain. A mighty warrior he is, Sir Gawain is challenged with an ultimate test of his faith and loyalty to the covenant. Beowulf and Sir Gawain are epic heroes, not because they fought many battles, but because they both upheld a moral and ethical integrity that has yet to be seen in their peers. Throughout the entire epic, it is evident that Beowulf lives by a heroic code of strength, courage, and honor. Along with strength and honor, this heroic code included characteristics such as loyalty and generosity, which ar |

One Day in the Life of Ivan DenisovichDuring the mid 20th century, Stalin tyrannically ruled over the Soviet Union. He committed many atrocities including mass genocide of the Ukrainian people, killing over 6 million. He also established a system of political censorship to preserve the nature of the communistic ideas in Soviet society. Gulag system was a series of prison camps for people that have allegedly committed political crimes or demonstrated signs of unacceptable views. These political prisoners were called "enemies of the people." Alexandr Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist, historian, former prisoner of the Gulag and critic of Soviet totalitarianism. He helped to raise awareness of the Gulag and the Soviet Union's forced labor camps system. Author of "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich," Solzhenitsyn uses the text to describe the work camps as a microcosm of the society of the USSR during the mid 20th century. Soviet society during that time lacked elementary human rights, including free |

Concepts of God in Life of PiMost people have a form of religion or "god" which they chose to follow. Religion is very important to people because it gives them a reason to continue on in life, or to strive to be the best person they can be. In the novel, "Life of Pi," author Yann Martel writes about Pi Patel, and his journey to Canada with his family when he was young. Pi Patel lived in Pondicherry, India, until his family sold the zoo and moved to Canada for a chance at better life. While at sea, the boat his family is on sinks, but Pi manages to board onto a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. He learns through his mishaps and struggles on the lifeboat to coexist with the tiger for the next 227 days. Martel's use of religion throughout the book has been clearly demonstrated through Pi's childhood, his experience on the lifeboat, and after he had been saved. Religion has always been a major part of Pi's childhood with Hindu being his first religion as he was born into it. "The |

The Date Rape CrisisDate rape is one of the most brutal mentally and physically damaging experiences for a person to endure. In the typical example of date rape, a woman is the victim, with little to no interest in sex with her date, and an aggressive male is the perpetrator, who either force themselves on the female, or use other means, such as drugs or alcohol, to subdue the woman and get what they want, without the woman's permission. However, there have been studies and ongoing debates that have created a large grey area in between a first date that leads to casual sex, and full-blown forced intercourse without mutual consent. The miscommunication hypothesis argues that many incidences of coercive sex are brought about by simple "miscommunications" regarding the sexual wants and desires of the victim and the perpetrator. I will discuss how theories like this take blame away from the perpetrator, why certain rape victims are looked upon with more empathy than others, and the consequences o |

Power Tumbling and the Olympic GamesThe Olympic Games are a gathering of countries around the world in order to compete and celebrate the greatest athletes. This celebration includes artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, but not power tumbling. Although, Power tumbling is a form of gymnastics, it is different from artistic and rhythmic gymnastics. In power tumbling individuals perform tumbling skills on a long floor. Power tumbling requires just as much dedication, athleticism, talent, and skill as any other sport in the Olympics. Many people believe that power tumbling is too much like artistic gymnastics to be an Olympic sport on its own. Power tumbling is essentially tumbling, which is a major component of the floor exercise in artistic gymnastics. Adding another activity to the gymnastics portfolio could potentially confuse the TV audience. Power tumbling is not as popular as artistic gymnastics, but has been growing a much larger fan base over the years. Since profit margins determine which sports gain or lose their O |

Germany, Greece and Existing DebtThere are a few reasons that I came up with on why the German government continues to loan Greece money. It seems to me that a major part of their continued financial support is due to the fact that they have a lot at risk if the Greek economic situation deteriorates further. It's no secret that the Greeks have had trouble repaying their debts but I think Germany realizes it is in their best interest to continue to loan to them. Germany and other Northern European economies are somewhat stuck in a tricky situation here. They have been providing loans to the Greek government and its difficult to just stop. They have incentive to keep loaning to them due to the fact that they started loaning to them and it becomes a pretty vicious cycle. The Germans continue to loan to the Greeks because they share a currency and they are a monetary union. Since they are members of the Eurozone, Greece can't just print money to spend like the United States is able to do. Due to the shared Euro, a further Greek deterioration could affect the German banks and cause their currency value to drop. This |

Adopting Customized Dining OptionsOn February 6, 2014, it was requested to add a customized dining plan option in place of the current dining plan option, which has a fixed number of meals and dining dollars that must be used by the end of the semester. Students that have bought the dining plans are dissatisfied for many reasons. First, freshmen and sophomores living on campus are required to buy an expensive meal plan that is over $1200 and are restricted to the times and places where they are allowed to eat. In addition, this particular meal plan comes with a limited amount of dining dollars and students are unable to buy snacks or drinks for an entire semester. Lastly, students living off campus are restricted to buying dining dollars at a cost of $600, $800, and $1000, which are transferred to the student account for meal and snack purchases. In both instances, whether a student lives on campus or off campus, meals or dining dollars cannot be transferred onto the next semester. For this reason, many students find |

The Decameron by Giovanni BoccaccioThe story 'Ser Cepperello' was taken from the first tale of 'The Decameron.' Ser Cepparello is also known as Ciapelletto who was a wicked man. Musciatto Franzesi has hired him to handle his business management which had spread far in many regions. He was staying at the house of two Florentine brothers. He became ill there. The brothers became fearful of the impact that if he would die at their home without the last rites, it would be like a sin so they decided to go in search for a friar. The brothers called a friar from the convent near the house in order to hear the wicked man's confession and to grant him his last rites. Ciappelletto started telling his lies related to his life. His lies made him a pious person, but he was pretending to cringe over his sins. The friar believed him and preached a sermon on his afterlife. The people of the town who heard about the sermon believed that he was a pious man and revered Ciapelletto as a saint after his death. This story was a myst |

Cry the Beloved Country by Alan PatonWithin the chaos and quarrelsome enclosed in society, individuals often lose sight of aspirations. They then become lost with that absence of hope; they become consumed by anarchy and misfortune. In the 1940th century, historical fiction novel, Cry, The Beloved Country, Alan Paton uses asyndeton to create an overwhelming presence in Johannesburg's environment, modifying human morality and ambition. Paton describes Johannesburg as a place of "great high buildings" and a place of chaos when he says, "It is too much to understand" (45). Its overcrowded streets and complicated architecture emphasize the difference between it and Ndotsheni. Paton develops bewilderment by comparing the two very different settings. Johannesburg contains too many difference presences. Paton emphasizes these through Kumalo's perspective, illustrating it to the readers because he also sees it for the very first time. However, as time goes on even familiar sights and sounds appear to be corrupted. These foreign surroundings allow him to see a loss of tribal values. More and more individuals within Johannesburg lose their morals and changes occur |

Media's Impact on Body Image"To all girls who think you're ugly because you're not a size zero, you're the beautiful one. It's society who's ugly." - Marilyn Monroe There are some people who believe that the fashion industry has no correlation with the way women perceive them selves (Hooke). However, the modeling industry, media, and society influences young women to think that the way the media perceives women is the way they should look. This can easily lead to low self-esteem, anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, obesity, and major anxiety and depression disorders. The modeling industry and the media should be held accountable for the recent increase in negative body image because they promote immodest and expensive wardrobe, broadcast unrealistic body ideals, and glamorize eating disorders. Many influential celebrities dress in extremely provocative and immodest ways and women thus feel pressured to dress similar to them (Khidekel). Country Risk and Strategic PlanningAs we plan our FDI in the boot company in Canada, there are many areas we must consider to in fact produce and distribute the product despite risks and barriers we may run into. In this paper, we will analyze the risks and plan we have to drive our products to the market while staying on top the factors that come with an FDI in Canada. Political, Legal, and Regulatory Risks The most obvious risk that we must be aware of when investing in a Canadian boot manufacturer is not conforming with laws that govern foreign direct investments and how they will apply to us. There will not be much political risk associated with our venture since the US and Canada have a great political relationship, so the trade and tariff agreements in place should be stable. Exchange and Repatriation of Funds Risks Anytime there is a transfer of funds from our country to a foreign country for investment, and a transfer of funds in the case of the return on investment, there is a risk of loss associated with flu |

William Wilson by Edgar Allan PoeAll authors use literary features to develop atmosphere in their stories, and "William Wilson" is no exception. The short story "William Wilson" employs the internal conflict of the narrator with an imaginary doppelganger to illustrate the conflicts between a man and his conscience. The gothic mood of the story which follows a dark and mysterious form, intensifies the atmosphere of Poe's psychological conflict, and drives the story like a mystery way to its conclusion. Moreover, the writing style of story is very calm and common even with the conflict that amplifying the story's mysterious mood. Because the story contains an unreliable narrator, we cannot trust that we are seeing the real picture or truth of the story. Disease Report - Van der Woude SyndromeThe human body is an incredibly complex organism that is susceptible to many different disease. Some of these diseases only effect 1 in 100,000 or 200,000 people and becomes incredibly difficult to either treat or cure. Some of these diseases have not been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry because there is very little financial incentive in order to cure these diseases, these diseases are called orphan diseases. An orphan disease could be a rare disease that effects fewer than 200,000 people. Other orphan diseases are common diseases that have been ignored in developed countries because modern medicine has effectively eradicated the disease. New rare diseases are discovered every year due to variations or defects in genes. Other orphan diseases can come from environmental or toxic conditions. The process for diagnosing orphan diseases are still poor. Patients who have a rare disease will often see a physician about 7 times before even receiving a diagnosis. Van der Woude syndrome is an orphan disease that affects the development of the human face. Often people who are born with this syndrome often suffer from a cleft lip, a cleft palate or either. Business Strategy - Wendy'sExecutive Summary Wendy's historically has fared very well within the fast-food industry; they have led or been the front runners in a number of key areas that are of extreme importance to customers. However, while Wendy's has excelled since inception and been a key member in the big four of the fast-food industry inclusive of Wendy's, McDonalds, Burger King, and YUM Brands, there are a number of area's that Wendy's could improved upon and areas of focus the company should examine more deeply in order to create stronger barriers of entry, to gain more market share, and to ensure that they can continue to grow, expand, and remain relevant even during economic hard times as the world and particularly their industry becomes more globalized. Wendy's at this time however is in the process of refocusing on its core business function which is providing quality hamburgers and meals. Wendy's currently has merged with Arby's and recently spun off their interest in Tim Horton's and sold their int |

Oriental Perspectives on Environmental EthicsAccording to a German philosopher, Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), philosophy is vis-a-vis to the Western orientation. Perhaps, others are right in saying, it is redundant to say Western philosophy. In fact, when one speaks of philosophy there is no need to distinguish it as Eastern or Western for automatically it is already Western in orientation for it originates there. One of these is Thales of Miletus (624-585 BC) who believed that water is the basic element of the world. When the word 'philosophy' is said, it is tantamount that it is a Western thinking. However, it creates a variation when one talks about the philosophy in the East. There were also philosophies that emerged in the Asian countries. One of the existing philosophies is the Chinese philosophy that has been shaping the Chinese civilization. Indian philosophy is worth noting that "believes in some form or other in the law of karma and, its corollary, rebirth" (Moorty 14). No traces will be found that a Chi |

Neurodevelopment and Neurocognitive DisordersADHD, Autism, developmental delays and learning disabilities are just a few disorders that fall into the category of neurodevelopmental disorders. A Neurodevelopmental disorder is an onset of the brain dysfunctions, however depending on the cause; onset can be slow or gradual with deteriorating causes. The few complications that caused by this disorder are seizures, behavioral problem, motor dysfunction and cognitive dysfunctions. While there are varieties of explanations cause of these disorders from genetics to environmental factors, the cause is still unknown. Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the disorders that covered under neurodevelopmental disorder. According to the definition, in DSM 5, ADHD is often referred to as hyperactivity and categorized by inability or difficulty to maintain task-oriented behavior. Children express impulsivity, excessive or exaggerated motor activity, such as haphazard running or fidgeting ( Nigget al., 2005).One of the examples of A |

Rules and Philosphies of Sustainable ArchitectureTo most people, sustainable architecture is a relatively new idea in the world. A way to design that has come about to try to be environmentally aware and lessen our green footprint on the environment. However this green building design is something that has been around since before the late 18th century. It was a design fad that was taken over by the industrial revolution as more and more new technological advances were being designed and put into the fabric of buildings. These included mechanical systems of heating, ventilation, and artificial lighting, which were adopted as quickly as possible into homes to try to stay on the cutting edge of this new trend. This substantial increase in mechanical systems being implemented directly correlates to the historical increase in global fossil fuel consumption. From the boom of the Industrial Revolution to the release of the report "Our Common Future" in 1987 new advances in mechanical systems paired with new engineering practices |

Early Changes in English GovernmentIn 17th century England, major events took place that changed the structure of English government. These changes influenced the relationship between the English people and their government. By the end of the 17th century, England had created a form of government known as a Limited Monarchy. They did not create this government easily; it took many changes in power to reach an ideal government which still exists today. The Stewart Dynasty started in 1603. Many of its rulers claimed a "divine right of kings." This was the belief that God gave the king the right to rule. James I announced to Parliament in his speech in 1610 that his rule was a divine right monarchy and that this "state of monarchy is the supremest thing on earth." James I followed pro-Catholic foreign policy with Spain and discriminated against conservative Protestants known as Puritans. This made many of the Protestants angry with him. The Magna Carta, which was created in 1215, stated that only the Grand |

Failures of the American Education SystemThe educational system in America is unstructured. Failing grades and drop-out factories are bi-products of some American schools. A person could speculate that the amount of money and policies thrown toward public schools should have promoted positive change. It is not dubious to ponder whether the effort extended toward education has been in vain or not. However, the main effort perceived by the American public has been broken promises made by politicians. Despite the policies attempting to improve education, the quality of education in America is still very poor; moreover, the economy of America will suffer exponentially if action is not taken. The quality of education in America is largely based on a person's financial status. The thought of a country having a price tag on quality education is unfair, however, very true pertaining to education in the United States. Minorities and people in poverty are educated unequally. "Only one-third of American students achieve proficienc |

The Benefits of Organic FoodsDo you know the main reason for having heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and being obese? Well, if we would have wanted to keep ongoing on naming diseases it can take an entire day to name all the diseases that impact our society. Unfortunately, the primary cause of each of those illnesses will always relate to our food industry; a broken food industry, that currently leads us to a dead-end. The food industry has become a big monopoly, such as big companies like Friendly's, which has significantly monopolized the ice cream and frozen food industry. Thanks to Friendly's empowerment, other companies like Magnum Ice cream, who are fighting against diabetes by using materials to make a 100% organic diabetic friendly ice cream cannot accomplish their goal when going up against giants like Friendly's. Because in term of cost Friendly's has all the companies and the machinery to produce the ice cream while Magnum has to pay farmers in order to produce the food naturally, and lots o |

Seasonal Symbolism in The Bluest EyeIn "The Bluest Eye," by Toni Morrison, the reader is led to question if society actually does try to predict events by seasons. Through placing different events in different seasons, especially summer, Morrison leads you to expect the unexpected, and teaches you to read without letting your beliefs take charge. In the book, autumn is interpreted to represent the end of childhood. Many people confuse the ending of childhood and the beginning of adulthood. In reality, the two are very different. The end of childhood is when a child starts to undergo physical changes; however, it is only when their mentality starts to change, when they lose that magic of childhood, that they enter adulthood. When a young character named Pecola starts to menstruate, one of her friends, Claudia, says, "Lying to next to a real person who was ministratin' was somehow sacred. She was different from us now- grown-up-like" (32). This quote shows society's point of view, but by placing this in the chapter of aut |

Short Story - The HuntressIt has been days since I have seen my village. I can still hear the screams and cries of the villagers as men invaded. I heard my parents crying out, "Aria, Aiden!" trying to find me and my brother. We were in the local market trying to trade some of the things I had shot for clothes. New clothes, old clothes, anything to keep us warm during the long winters. We were trading for a beautiful dress with the last of our goods when I smelled smoke. At first, I didn't think about it because there was a fire pit right next to us. I was also too busy admiring the dress I bought for the prince's ball. Every time one of the royals sons turns 18, they set up a huge ball for all the 18 year old girls to go to. It's the only time the markets are allowed to sell decent clothing. The ball is hosted at the palace, where the prince dances with all of the girls, chats with them, and the next day, he chooses his queen. As soon as the future queen is chosen, the rest of the girls are returned |

Oscilloscope - Measuring Period and FrequencyThe oscilloscope is one of the most important and ubiquitous measuring instrument used in the science industry today. With its wide application range it is a useful tool in medicine, engineering, telecommunications and other sciences. Before the digital revolution, the oscilloscope was composed of a cathode ray tube, amplifiers, time controllers and other electronics that measured voltages and showed them on a screen. Oscilloscopes are used to detect the change of an electrical signal over time and display as continuous graph showing amplitude, frequency, rise time, time interval and others in a repeated pattern continuous shape on the screen. This measuring instrument displays an electric signal measured in a circuit or any other physical quantities (sound for example) that have been converted to an electrical signal. The more recent and modern oscilloscope is entirely digital and is using a combination of a voltage measuring hardware, analog-to-digital converter and software to displ |

Working Conditions in the Clothing IndustryThe $450 billion global fashion industry is one of the most important economies in the world. It produces clothes for people all over the world and employs over 25 million workers in more than 100 countries. Top three of the most successful fashion brands in 2013 were: Zara, Nike and H&M. But they do not only share popularity, also the 'Made in' label. China, Bangladesh, Indonesia etc. are the norm. Most of the clothes are produced in developing countries, but mainly delivered and sold in industrial countries. To stay competitive and being able to provide low prices, companies not only decrease production salaries, but also working conditions. Furthermore it will be discussed who is responsible for these issues and what can be done about it? The employees of the fashion industry are working for, far less than a minimum wage or living wage.
