Women, the Bible and The IliadIn the Jewish Bible and The Iliad, women were portrayed as the property of men. Thus, their activities, such as conversing with friends, exercising, praying to gods, nursing and teaching children, and pleasing men, were limited inside the household. Although they were bounded to the household, their beauties, and men's affections to them still made them own the ability to impact men's decisions and public society. This ability is called power. Power is the ability to direct others' actions, influence others' minds, or affect the progress and the result of events such as battles and conflicts. But who granted women power? It is men who granted these women their powers. That is, only the greatest leaders deserved attractive women with outstanding exterior appearance as prizes. Having beautiful women represents honors and even social status for men, so all men surely wanted to pursue this beauty. Therefore, women's beauty became powerful. Men's affection to women was another power grant |

Technology and the Minds of a GenerationDavid Jones, a professor from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, presents his feelings towards his students using technology, "I just gave my class a midterm, and I was really asking obvious questions that, had they been attending carefully in lecture and had they been doing the readings carefully, everyone should have gotten 100 percent on this exam. And the mean score was probably about a 75 percent. It's not that the students are dumb, it's not that they're not trying, I think they're trying in a way that's not as effective as it could be because they're distracted by everything else" (Dretzin). Today people are addicted to technology, and it becomes a necessity in their daily lives. Eliza, a student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tells about her addiction to her BlackBerry, "I have a few friends who, if they hear the word BlackBerry, they think of me. Like, I am never off of it. It is glued to me. When it's more than an arm's-length from me, |

College and a Tight Job MarketThe job market has decreased and many college educated people are struggling to find work, resigning to settling for low-paying jobs. Others find themselves applying for unemployment and school loan deferments. Many people find themselves asking the question: is college worth the high price? Getting a degree may cost 40,000 dollars, and does not guarantee you a job. There are academic programs putting out more students than there are jobs available. College educated people find themselves working for minimum wage with forty thousand dollars of student loan debt. It is getting harder and harder to get a student loan. Several years ago Florida Bright Futures had an ACT requirement of 20. The requirement has been raised to 26. This leaves more of a financial burden on people. Students may find themselves focused on the earning power a degree can offer. Many choose careers that can bring in the most pay instead of choosing a career they dream of doing. The credit hours cost the same to become an engineer or a school teacher. A school teacher will earn around 30,000 and an engineer will earn |

Dress Codes and Expression RestraintsFrom birth, everyone has been force fed the gender norms of America and society. Baby boys are sent home with blue blankets and the girls are sent home with pink ones. As they grow up, everyone buys the boys the trucks and action figures. On the other hand, girls are given dolls and dresses. The children do not get to choose what they want; these norms are then solidified in schooling. Schools teach children to conform to fit into the flow, to not make a ripple in the norms. Schools push the gender norms, mainly with their gendered dress codes that don't allow for children and teens to completely find themselves and express themselves. In other words, school systems are pushing the binary normativity, and the gender-sex agreement of our societies with gendered dress codes. Binary genders is becoming a recurring phrase through society. This phrase stands for the male and female genders; we now are further accepting that there are non-binary genders. These are genders that do not fit the standard outlines. Some non-binary genders are agender, bigender, and transgender. With this said, many |

Belonging in Death of a SalesmanIf we look at New York City, it is a fast paced, very stressful and very socially ranked area. Everyone is trying to reach the top of the "food chain" in a way. Same thing goes with all of the books that we have read so far. All the books we have read so far. New York being the City that it is puts a lot of different stresses on people and pressures to perform. In the Death of a Salesman, Biff views the city on by the physical advantages that it attribute to his success as a whole. The place where Biff succeeded the most was on the football field. Yes, he could have played at a higher level, but by being the quarterback and everything, he felt successful in a way. By Biff being successful, he brings happiness to Willy. There is one point during the book, where Willy is hallucinating that Biff is playing in this huge game and he is telling all his imaginary friends about it. The happiness not only came with the success of Biff, but it came with the ide |

The Extinction of Left-Handed DevianceAlthough our society constantly continues to grow and develop with more tolerance and acceptance, the expectation of conformity is something that is still prominent, and has been throughout history. When someone falls outside of a norm, or does not conform to the rest of society, they are recognized as being different, and even deviant. Unfortunately, the majority of the time, being different is not a good thing. Even worse in past times, being different from the rest of society was something considered so bad and so deviant, it was often punished. If a person fell outside of society's norms, extreme measures would be taken in order to fix whatever it was that made a person different. Even small children were expected to abide by the norms, and forced to if they would not. Even though the expectation of conformity still lingers in todays society, some forms of deviance have grown to be extinct, and society is no longer expected to conform from behaviors that were once considered devian |

History of the Populist MovementDuring the period of the early nineteenth century, farmers lost their economic independence and that became the beginning of the Populist Movement. And then the populist movement politically oriented coalition of agrarian reformers in the Middle West and South that advocated a wide range of economic and political legislation in the late 19th century. In this paper, I will identify the statement of the populist movement base on research of the authors John D. Hicks and Richard Hofstadter. John D. Hicks said that to the upper and middle classes, more had been given than to the lower, to the city dweller far more than to his country kinsman. The farmer had good reason to believe, as he did believe, that he worked longer hours, under more adverse conditions, and with smaller compensation for his labor than any other man on earth (Hicks, 118). In early nineteenth, the farmer worked hard, but got less income. The farmers did not blame the effect of the market on themselves. The country trea |

Groundbreaking Cinema - Citizen Kane"Citizen Kane" is known in history as one of the best films of all time, but what makes a movie "the best movie of all time?" There are actually many different reasons a movie could be considered the best, but few have ever achieved something even close to the genius of Orson Welles that is "Citizen Kane." Orson Welles could easily be considered ahead of his time and that is because no one had ever created a movie that brought such an element of cinematographic storytelling to the screen. Cinematographic storytelling is the idea that simply with a camera and a visual from the movie can evoke a different meaning expanding to plot, character and even much more. Cinematographic storytelling, or visual storytelling, makes it seem as if the pictures on the screen can allude to much more then they actually do. What Orson Welles has done with his masterpiece "Citizen Kane" has created one of the first movies in American history that perfected the idea of visual storytelling. The first |

Youth Gangs and the Edgework TheoryIntroduction The issue of youth gangs has been a major concern in many societies. Youth gangs exist in almost every country. Many studies have been carried out by various academics, government and non-government agencies in trying to resolve the problem. Many traditional researches were conducted in trying to explain the phenomenon suggesting different causes for its existence, which included poverty, poor family background, lack of protection, and bad associations, etc. In the new age of technology advancement, the acquisition of knowledge through different media and the Internet has become much easier and widespread. Young people nowadays should have much better awareness on the risks and fallacies in joining youth gangs, yet the phenomenon continues to happen. Some other intriguing reason must be present in attracting young people to join or stay in gangs. One of which might be the excitement created from voluntary risk taking as suggested in the concept of 'Edgework'. |

Investigating a Crime SceneAt 10 am, on October 3rd 2014, I was called upon to investigate a crime scene of stolen rare coins. As a good investigator would do, I began by studying my surroundings. Upon arrival at the crime scene I found the classroom secured with physical barriers and tape. Unwanted spectators were quickly eliminated from the crime scene. I started to gather evidence and made sure that there was no evidence manipulation of any sort. It is important to keep everything secure since any sort of contamination can lead to evidence dismissal in court. When I first looked around, I saw that the door of the classroom was open as well as the right side of the back window. Right away, I was suspecting a burglary. Whoever entered the classroom had to be in a big rush to leave. A question that came to my mind right away was: "Was the window opened on purpose to mislead the investigators or was the perpetrator caught off guard and left in a hurry?" To answer my questions I needed to gather more clues. Consequently, on the chalkboard I found a hand fingerprint, which I preserved to be sent to the crime lab for analysis. In addition, a footprint was also found in front of the outside windo |

The Concept of Self-CensorshipSelf-censorship is the censoring of one's own work, in order for the public to be unaware of whatever it is that is being censored. A lot of people would say that self-censorship is a terrible idea, because they think that the public should be aware of everything about everything. However they do not understand the deepness behind self-censorship. Self-censorship is used mainly in controversial issues when people are too afraid to report something in fear of the reactions from the public. Self-censorship in the media does not only mean that one single person is not publishing their work. A newspaper, an online newspaper, or a news station can choose what they want to publish, regardless of what the reporters want. If a reporter self-censors their own work from being published, they just won't give it to the news team that they work for. But if they give it to the news team, the news team can choose from there whether or not they wish to publicize it. In times of crisis such as wars, |

Interviewing for My VisaThe day that I got my visa is still fresh in my mind. The buildup to the interview was nothing short of climactic. When I recall those days, I realize that they were one of my most tense periods. But after the interview was over, I realized that there is no substitution for hard work. It was difficult for me to schedule an interview with the embassy. I had to go through some obstacles to fix the interview date. After filling out the interview form, I rushed home to check the next available date. But as soon as I glanced up at the computer screen, I couldn't believe my eyes: the nearest date available was December 23, 2014. I had heard rumors that one is not given a visa after his interview date passes December 15 of that year. I was shocked and thought there must be something wrong with the computer. I decided to go to bed. The next morning, as soon as the cock sounded, I leaped up from my bed and sat in front of my computer. To my relief, the next date wa |

The Problem of Human TraffickingImagine living a normal life one day, being safe and at home with no problems at all and then the next being taken from regular life and sold into sex slavery with no control over anything. This is happening right now, everywhere in the world and most people are clueless about it. The Trafficking Protocol states that human trafficking is defined as "The recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons by the means of the threat or use of coercion of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of giving or receiving payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation" (Yea 2.) Human Trafficking is a huge problem not only in the United States, but internationally too. More people should be informed on how big of a problem human trafficking is, where it is taking place at, and what people can do to eliminate it. Human Trafficking is one of |

The Benefits of Fossil FuelsA million years ago, when dinosaurs were in existence, the earth consisted of diverse tropical trees and swamps. It was an ideal state for the formation of fossil fuels. At the time, dinosaurs died along with various plants and decomposed deep in the Earth's crust layer upon layer. The layers gradually, with time, turned into a black coloured rock-like substance we now know as coal or a thick fluid called oil or natural gas. Fossil fuels are organic carbon compounds that are natural sources of energy. They are found in large amounts several kilometers under the Earth's surface or the ocean floor in most locations around the world. Ever wondered where the electricity we use comes from? Or the petroleum our cars run on? Or what produces the different types of energy we use everyday? Coal, oil and natural gas are the major sources of energy we use everyday. Virtually all the energy produced in the world comes from these sources. For this reason, fossil fuels do not belong only to the past |

Woman and Body ImageIn past centuries, people believed that a woman had to present a perfect physical appearance. The focus was on outward beauty and hygiene. However, things have now changed, and the focus is on inner beauty. The modern society emphasizes on good morals and a pure heart. In addition, the modern woman in the modern American society has many social choices to make and more freedom than before. However, many women feel dissatisfied with their bodies when puberty starts. This dissatisfaction is observed from girls aged thirteen to women in their sixties. There are many transitions that take place when a woman is maturing and once she becomes aware, she starts being cautious about her body. Some of the issues that affect the woman's body and appearance include fashion, breast size, menstruation, body weight, and body complexion. Women develop body projects that help then adopt what they desire in their bodies and lose what they fell is not necessary. I have adopted many beliefs and attitudes |

Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse"In Siddhartha," by Hermann Hesse, Siddhartha searches for the meaning of life and his enlightenment. Siddhartha is a Brahmin born Hindu but does not find what he is looking for as a Hindu priest and follows many different paths during his journey to find what he is seeking in life. He is willing to do almost anything if it means getting closer to understand himself and his enlightenment. Govinda is Siddhartha's childhood friend and loyal follower. He follows Siddhartha in his quest until he meets the Buddha. Govinda believes enlightenment can be taught, unlike Siddhartha who believes you must find it on your own, and follows the Buddha until his death when he reunites with Siddhartha. Ethical Principles and Henrietta LacksHenrietta Lacks was an African American woman who was born in the state of Virginia in 1920. At the age of twenty-one, she and her family moved to the Baltimore, Maryland. This is when Mrs. Lacks life forever changed the world of science and never even knew it. During this time in the United Stated history, scientist were working hard on trying to make human cells grow outside of the body unsuccessfully. This changed on February 1, 1951 when Henrietta went to see a gynecologist about some irregular bleeding. There during the examination Dr. Howard Jones noticed a small lesion that was located on her cervices that was purple and if touched bleed too easily. This lesion did not look like cancer, so he cut off a small tissue sample and sent it to Dr. George Gey, who was working on the cell growth research. It was there that Dr. Gey's assistant would cultivate that tissue sample of Henrietta Lacks, and turn the scientific world upside down. When looking at the case of Henrietta Lacks the |

The Chrysalids by John WyndhamImagine living in a community where you have to hide your identity from everyone because being different can put you in danger, and there is a person who would do anything to purify it's community. In the book "The Chrysalids," by John Wyndham, many characters have to hide their true identity from the community of Waknuk because they are different and many of them try to banish mutants. These mutants are considered to be deviant for the reason of not fitting the description of a human according to biblical concepts. In the Waknuk community, the description of being normal is very important to the people of Waknuk. If one does not fit the description of what is normal, they are faced with danger or send to another community. Prejudice exists in Waknuk as evident through the lives of mutants such as David Strom, Sophie Wender and Joseph Strom, who follows the laws and religious concepts very strictly. David who looks normal just like his family keeps such secret that his life could be |

Eveline by James JoyceSome people walk through life freely and successfully while grasping opportunities. Others of us, like Eveline, trip through hardships and get off-balanced by relationships or tragic events we don't foresee. In his short story "Eveline," James Joyce introduces us to the life of a young woman named Eveline. Given the opportunity to finally start a new life with Frank, the man she likes, from a life of horror, she doesn't seem to stand a chance to leave everything behind. What appears to be an imperceptive decision; Eveline, a young confused woman, seems to not know what she wants from life. In order to understand Eveline's decision in settling back to the life she has always known, we have to analyze some factors that may have prevented her from leaving. The first reason comes from the attachment to her environment. At a glance the idea of attachment does not make sense because Eveline lives with her abusive father who constantly accuses her of stealing and threatens her wi |

Medieval Romance in British LiteratureMedieval romances seem to usually idealize chivalry, the hero and his love. The setting of medieval romance also tends to be imaginary and derives from mystery and suspense. There also is a concealed or disguised identity in many of the tales written of this time period. Whether written in a story form or a poem form, there is still this adventurous fiction and it is generally centered on a quest or a trial. There is also separation and a reunion. What I found interesting is that generally while the male is the protagonist in the tales, the females were seen as an obstacle to overcome. The homo-sociality bonds were extremely important. Fidelity to ones' king and ones' fellow knights came first above all else. This type of thinking led to the rise of patriarchy, literally meaning "the rule of the father"; a male dominated society. It is for this reason that most of the texts that we have already looked at have painted women in a bad light. "Bisclavret," by Marie de France was one such tale. Throughout t |

Popular Culture and the Socialization of Marriage"Marriage across the world is a socially approved sexual and economic union between two or more people that is expected to last for a long time" (McDaniel and Tepperman 2011:96). The process of socialization relating to marriage and other intimate relationships is both complex and arduous as relationships are consistently developing and changing. These relationships differ tremendously depending on culture and beliefs. Canadian marriages have been found to be longer and more stable than marriages in the Unites States (White 1947:646), despite more than 1/3 of Canadian marriages ending in divorce before the 30th wedding anniversary (Clark and Compton 2006:233). The study of popular culture and sociology contributes factors that influence these relationships, aiding in understanding how different relationships are formed and maintained. Some findings that are important to the socialization of marriage include education and work, children, family life-balance, influence from imm |

Medical Overview on Cerebral PalsyCerebral palsy is a condition in which the brain is malformed during fetal development. It affects every aspect of a child's motor skills, speech and brain function. While the fetus is still developing its brain and spinal cord, the cells mutate causing this malfunction in the cerebral cortex. Most cases of cerebral palsy, the child is born with it, but it goes unnoticed until the child has trouble speaking, crawling, or moving by itself. This may take many months for the infant to be diagnosed. What also may happen is that the child can contract a disease in the early stages of their life, such as bacterial meningitis, or blunt force trauma to the brain while the brain is still developing. In the mid 1800's, Dr William John Little began the study of cerebral palsy, inspired by his own childhood disability. The techniques he discovered are still ever present in today's medicine. The first book on cerebral palsy was written by Sir William Osler, as well as Dr. Sigmund Freud, who figure |

Film Summary - The Boondock Saints"The Boondock Saints" has a more complex meaning then most critics give it credit for. Many reviews said that this movie was just a typical "guy movie" with gore, cussing, and violence, but there is much more to it. The idea of taking the law into your own hands, or vigilantism, is a main theme of this movie. Also characterization is related to the theme of the movie. The brothers have a reason for what they're doing, not killing just for fun or revenge. The point in the film when the McManus brothers realized they should take the law into their own hands was in a scene at the police station. They were sleeping there after they finished the questioning about the two men they killed in self-defense. It was clear they were having a dream with the voices in the background and they sprang up from a dream with water dripping on them. The water symbolizes a baptism towards their new mission about to begin. They looked at each other knowing what the other was thinking. They realiz |
